Astral Tequila Cocktails in Sacramento | Eater

"Whether you’re here for a casual lunch or a dinner date, classic comfort food is the central theme of the menu at House Kitchen. Don’t miss the braised beef short ribs or prime rib French dip sandwich for a taste of nostalgia. The massive patio space is ideal for enjoying an Astral Blanco margarita with lime, cucumber, and jalapeño for a little heat." - Bernadette Machard de Gramont

This cafe is a perfect spot for a relaxing meal. The interior is cozy with warm lighting and comfortable seating. The menu offers a variety of tasty options, including fresh salads, sandwiches, and homemade desserts. I tried their grilled chicken sandwich, which was juicy and flavorful, and a refreshing lemonade. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure I had everything I needed. The place was clean and well-maintained. Prices were reasonable for the quality of food and service. It’s an ideal place for a casual lunch or coffee break. I’ll definitely return to explore more of their menu. Highly recommended!

Basker Hobbins from the Hopscotch Ranch and I were in Sactown with a couple of relief pitchers properly equipped with a full sack of freshly set cow pies..still wet in the center and easy to throw, and about a half sack of dirt clods all from his ranch, with a single mission...make the day miserable for a few politicians! The House Kitchen & Bar was perfectly situated, not only would we enjoy some amazing food, but we'd be able to prioritize our targets with our bull pin, and watch the fun in real time. Man-O-Man...The House Kitchen was a great decision, the food was spectacular as was the service! 5 ☆☆☆☆☆ ! But...that sidewalk! Be careful where you step.

What a wonderful place! The decor is modern and stylish, creating a chic yet cozy vibe. The menu is extensive, offering everything from breakfast favorites to hearty dinners. I enjoyed their avocado toast and a fresh juice, both of which were delicious and made with fresh ingredients. The staff was courteous and attentive, ensuring a pleasant experience. The ambiance was lively but not noisy, making it perfect for both casual meetups and business meetings. Prices are fair considering the quality. The overall experience was excellent, and I’ll definitely be coming back to explore more of their menu. A perfect spot for food lovers!

House Kitchen & Bar is casual and lively with a wide variety of dishes. The burgers and flatbreads were tasty, and the drinks were affordable. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was upbeat. Great for groups or casual nights out.

I didn't know this place existed until I was looking for a different spot to take my friend to. Parking was convenient as it was in a garage. They validate an hour. With regards to food, the salmon, spicy shrimp pasta and braised short ribs were all delicious 😋😋😋!!! The guy who served us our food was very friendly and attentive. I didn't get his name. Great atmosphere as well. Will try outdoors when it gets much cooler.

Had teservation. Was seated outside and was very hot. No umbrellas up. Waited over 30 minutes for check. Salad had way too much dressing so was soggy. Apps were good. Drinks were good.

Our server was wonderful during our lunch visit. The owner stopped by & is very nice & personable. The chicken lettuce wraps were a fav at our table as an appetizer that the three of us shared prior to ordering lunch. It's a generous portion. The grilled chicken sandwich & the chuck burger we're tasty. The fries & sweet potato fries were perfect. The honey glazed salmon was delicious & paired well with seasonal veggies & mashed potatoes. We're coming back for happy hour since it runs from 4-8pm with a pretty tasty menu selection. Not pictured is the blackberry margarita. It was refreshing & mixed just right. Cheers to starting off Monday right!

Yelp
We love visiting House when we are downtown. The Prime French Dip is the best in town for sure, but I've been counting my calories lately so yesterday I tried the Blackened Salmon salad. It was so good, perfectly dressed and I ate every bit. It was pretty full at lunch so definitely recommend a reservation. We got a nice spot outside under the trees. Service is always great and Chef Chris is the best!

Yelp
Top notch eats near the Capitol. My favorite here is the tamale corn cakes appetizer. It's a unique dish that encapsulates the local Mexican culture. The cheese pull is beautiful, the soft inside texture of the corn cake with the outside being crisp and topped with mild chile verde salsa and sour cream. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Enjoyed the shrimp po boy, lots of crunchy shrimp piled on soft bread. French fries were delicious as well. Service here is great. Restaurant is clean and caters to high end customers and even the most casual diners. We ordered the cream churro's with ice cream. It was a lot but we finished it all :-D House Kitchen is not to be overlooked. With plenty of downtown options this place should be checked off your list sooner than later.

Yelp
Came for dinner on a weekday and the food is just ok. I got the braised rib and it wasn't the best The happy hour pork sliders though were really good. Service was quick and friendly but don't think I will be back.

Yelp
The sticky fries & French dip! Oh my!! We made sure to get the fresh horseradish and also the cream horseradish, so yummy!! I'll definitely come back!! Love this place!!

Yelp
A group dinner while on a Collette tour was enjoyed by 43 travelers at House Kitchen & Bar. We had a special group dinner menu with different starters, entrees and desserts. Such an amazing delicious dinner was enjoyed by all! Great customer service by the restaurant!!

Yelp
Been coming here for years, way before covid. I noticed a few things that are no longer on their menu, but food and service is still great. For items that were on the menu but are no longer on the menu, such as the Salmon Poke bowl, ask your server, they may still have it.

Yelp
Looking for a good spot in Downtown Sacramento? House Kitchen & Bar is a solid choice. Their menu has a great selection of classic comfort food with a contemporary twist. I personally loved the Braised Short Rib. It's tender, savory, and so filling. If you're just looking for something quick and to share, the Sticky Fries are a great option! They're perfectly crispy and have a unique flavor. The large portion size is also a plus with it. Food here comes out quickly and the service is attentive and prompt. Definitely a must try restaurant.

Yelp
It was a bit noisy here so that was a draw back but aside from that a very pleasant experience. Some friends and I started with some appetizers and the steak fries were SO GOOD. definitely the table favorite. In addition to that I ordered the prime rib French dip which was also really really good. Now they claim it's the best French dip in Sacramento. I don't know if I can agree with THAT, but it IS a winner and you won't be disappointed! Our server was a lovely young lady who let us kind of order at our leisure with no pressure and we appreciated that. 9/10 would return

Yelp
The food was good, but I don't know if it was five stars but the waitress was absolutely five stars. She was running around like crazy and she had a great personality and was very fun. It really made the experience at this restaurant worthy upcoming back multiple times. Thank you Kyliee

Yelp
Came here for dinner. The food was good. I really liked the corn cakes. 4/5 for taste of food, but all of the dishes were outrageously priced. $21 for the Santa Fe salad that was 90% lettuce, $14 or so for the corn cakes and wares. 2/5 for cost. We also got a purple reign and a double bubble. The drinks were terrible and I think it's mostly because they use low end alcohol like casamigos for the purple reign. The double bubble was supposed to be vodka, apple cider, and champagne and it had barely any flavor. 0/5 for drinks. The restaurant itself is nice with comfortable booths and the server was super nice. Unfortunately with the good food and service this did not outweigh the cost of everything. I don't think we would come back, especially because we like to enjoy good cocktails with dinner and I wasn't impressed with their options and the ones we got were not very good.

Yelp
Was attending music festival and tried out a trick called PFD. They said they are owned by house kitchen and bar. "Best French dip in sac". It was pretty darn good. Soft bread. Thin sliced meat. Flavorful au jus. I like it cause it's light and not overloaded with salt or other seasoning. Just a good light sandwich. Definitely gotta try the restaurant soon

Yelp
Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Sacramento this lunch spot is always on the must try list. The service is always awesome and speedy because they understand people usually have to get back to work. The food is perfect! Feels like home cooking with quality ingredients. Everything and I do mean everything is delicious. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
A great amount of seating with booths, the bar, and an outside patio. You can park in the 555 garage around the corner and get your parking validated. Food was pretty good..! - Short rib sticky fries : fries were nice and crispy with a delicious glaze but there barely was any short ribs on it. The meat that was on it was small scraps / crumbles and sparse. - Sweet corn tamale cakes : didn't really have any flavor and was TOO sweet for me. Wouldn't order again but my friend liked them - Salmon BLT was pretty tasty but the piece of salmon was too small for the bun. The fries it comes with are very flavorful but can start tasting a lil too salty eventually. - I don't remember the name of the drink of got, but it was a house drink with Bourbon. Pretty much like an Old Fashioned. It was STRONG, like straight bourbon lol. But I enjoyed it. - Service by Rachel B was OUTSTANDING! She was so friendly and attentive without smothering us. Great smile and really made us feel comfortable and welcomed.

Yelp
We had a gift card to this place and went before a kings game. We had no idea what to expect but it exceeded our expectations! The sticky fries are soooo good and the cocktails were delicious and strong. Highly recommend if you need a quick bite in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a modern nice setting in the 555 Capitol Mall building. The menu has a good variety of simple foods. I had the salmon BLT and it was very good - I chose the side salad with champagne dressing - the salad was disappointing. The salad seemed as though the spring mix was wet when the dressing was added so the flavor of the dressing was diluted. The wine selection was unusual for me but the "Dau?" Chardonnay was just fine. Service was great but on a Wednesday non-game night the restaurant was nearly empty. I'd like to return to try some of the other menu items. Parking is not the easiest - it's best to wear your walking shoes and park in a nearby garage.

Yelp
It was my first time here since I last came before Covid. I tried the French Dip with mayo instead of horseradish and both the sandwich and fries were so delicious. The au just was phenomenal. It was an amazing lunch.

Yelp
Our tour of the State Capitol ended with lunch at House Kitchen and bar. We tried the 2 appetizers- deviled Eggs and Rib Fries. For entree, we ordered the salmon salad, chicken sandwiches. I say all the dishes were ok, nothing really stood out as good. On the other hand, the service is good. I can tell with the short staff, the servers do the best they can. On the menu, the prime rib sandwich is supposed to be the best in Sacramento. Maybe next time we visit, this will be what I order.

Yelp
I had great expectations for this spot as they are known for their prime ribs on Mondays. We made reservations here intentionally on Monday and came in for this. First, the hostess made zero eye contacts with the line that was waiting to be seated. She was seating everyone who walked in on first come first serve basis, there was only 1 line and no other methods for helping folks that had reservations. 5 parties ahead of us all had no reservations and were seated immediately. By the time it got to us we had reservations but were left to seat at the last available tiny table at the corner. This was not a good Segway to our experience here. Then we were greeted by our waiter who said let's get your drinks ordered and I will come back with some water for you guys. The drinks took a long time and the water never came. When she returned to take our orders for dinner she let us know that they have no prime ribs today and were Un empathetic about it too. We ended up ordering the Filet and Braised short ribs, deviled eggs for App. Along with two drinks. The food was mediocre as it lack seasoning, and the deviled eggs were over powered by mustard and salt. Drinks were ok. Also the limited parking, with one parking lot that had no elevators make it hard to want to return. They are directly behind the G1 Center so imagine the availability for parking when there is an Event here, which happens all the times.

Yelp
I made a reservation for my husband, my niece and me for dinner and indicated that my niece is in a wheelchair. When we got there, the only option was a booth which we couldn't use. The hostess continued seating guest after guest that came in and we never did get to eat. luckily Il Fornaio had an opening and we were able to get seated right away. We were headed to a concert after dinner and didn't have much time. I had heard great things about this restaurant but this experience changed my mind.

Yelp
Happy hour was good! The pork tacos on the happy hour need to change the recipe a little bit and they will be amazing, they just were a little sweet and could use a bit of a reduction. Bartender was very attentive and we barely waited for anything to come out. Service was great! No complaints about that at all. Overall a good spot to stop after work.

Yelp
My husband and I went for lunch here . The service was impeccable . The food was amazing . We started with the crispy chicken appetizer which was so tasty . The drunken chicken salad was light and delicious . My husband had the prime rib French dip . He thought it was amazing .

Yelp
I'd like to give a higher review because House is in a great location, right by the DOCO. I have some comments though, bad news first. The French dip is their specialty but it was incrediby salty and so was the au jus. The beef was shaved nice and thin though. The Thai salad would have been perfect but the chicken was dry and there were a lot of chili flakes that were not in the description. I don't love spicy food and I hate it when a menu is not clear about ingredients. The good news is that the service was great! The elote dip is worth it, definitely go for that. The espresso martini was elite, and they didn't hold back on the alcohol. It would be a nice place for a date or dinner out with a partner.
google avatar

Yelp
Made reservations as we were going to a concert and figured it would be busy. It was packed. There were three of us in our party. We were greeted and given some menus. We ordered our drinks (although one was not available as one of their ingredients wasn't available). We started with Deviled eggs. Our food took a little longer but figured it would because of the crowd there. The food was good but I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy which could have used a little more sauce but shrimp were cooked perfectly. Staff are friendly even when busy and the owner is always checking with the customers.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food choices here. Started eating here a decade ago when they hosted Last Tuesdays, pairing food with wine, beer or other booze! It was great and I hope it comes back. I got the drunken chicken salad, The cornbread croutons had a wierd taste but other than that it very yummy. There are a few new extra fees/taxes added; one for the kitchen staff and one for alcohol?? There is plenty of seating and a full service bar. You could fill up on a few things off the happy hour menu as well.

Yelp
House Kitchen & Bar in downtown Sacramento made for a great lunch spot. I had the French Dip sandwich--hearty, flavorful, and packed with tender meat and a rich au jus. The ambience was stylish yet relaxed, perfect for a midday break. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better.

Yelp
Spending a day taking in the highlights of Sacramento can work up a visitor's appetite. Especially if that visitor was me who was not looking forward to a two-hour drive back home. I was parked near the Capitol Mall, so this looked as good an option as any in the area. In truth, I was looking for more of a family-run place with homestyle food from their native country. This wouldn't be it. Far from it actually. This struck me as a suit-friendly, happy hour-focused restaurant where people meet to more likely broker deals than break bread. I was here before 5PM, so they weren't particularly focused on service as they were preparing for the dinner rush. I had to wave my arm to get some attention, so I knew they weren't breaking any land speed records. I tried two items on their by-the-numbers menu, the first being the $9 Deviled Eggs. They're a personal weakness for me as I can wolf them with abandon. Six halves were the right quantity, but they sadly had a refrigerated flavor (photo: https://bit.ly/3IM25N6). Better was the $18.50 Thai Chicken Salad, a virtual mountain of chicken, Napa cabbage, shredded carrot, edamame, red pepper, scallions, peanuts, and wonton crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3XrBNDQ). A generous portion indeed though not the most creative execution. Oh well. FOOD - 3 stars...really suit-targeted bar bites AMBIANCE - 3 stars...spacious modern space but somewhat inhospitable SERVICE - 2.5 stars...not quite attentive to solo diners before happy hour TOTAL - 3 stars...yeah, not really my House RELATED - Exploring Sacramento? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/3UetBpa

Yelp
Food was delicious! I would definitely be back. The only thing is my drink smelled like bleach lol. I sent it back multiple times.

Yelp
super yummy food & a great dinner spot near the golden one center! we ate here before a concert and it was absolutely perfect. the staff was efficient, food came out quick & all the meals were delicious! would happily come here again :)

Yelp
Was able to stop in before the Kings game and we got the last two seats at the bar around 540, so get there before 515! Very clean atmosphere and many entrances into the restaurant. Everyone was super nice and the Bartenders Lisa and Greg were super friendly and accommodating to everyone's needs! We had French Dip and Wings, both were excellent fillers before the game. Definitely going back based off service alone. Great job staff.
google avatar

Dre S.

Yelp
The wings were awesome and lots of specialty drinks. Sat at the bar and the bartender was great. Lots of natural lighting inside. Definitely would go back to try more of the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
We were invited to have dinner Friday night at the great restaurant. Close to our hotel and venue for the night. Family type of greeting from the owner Chris! Drinks were wonderful and food was delicious. I forgot to take photos but everything was photo worthy. Great design and super clean! Would definitely go back again.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
Stopped in before the Kings game. Sat at the bar and ordered a drink the purple reign and shared the French dip. The service was good and the ambiance as well. I really liked the Brussel sprouts. I would come back.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
"Best prime rib sandwich", may substitute fries that accompany the sandwich with salad. Yay. 5 local beers on draft and full bar. Yay. Really great and quick service, yay. Will I come back again, yay! Thinly shaved prime rib, minimal fat, crispy slivered fried onions in a crispy-soft yellow bun. There is au-jus dip with it. Their special horseradish sauce is not hot/stinging at all.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
If you are near Downtown Sacramento this restaurant is a great choice! They are within walking distance to the Golden 1 Center and DOCO, very nice ambiance. Great spot for date night! We had the Shrimp Po' Boy Sandwich that was loaded with Shrimp. We also had the Carolina Style pulled Pork Sandwich. For an appetizer we ordered the Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes oh my goodness those were delicious! The staff was friendly and throughout our meal offered more French fries, which by the way the French fries are delicious! We were too full for more though. Everything we had was great!
google avatar

Ethan D.

Yelp
Good meal. Wish the Filet was a bit larger but that's my only "complaint". It was a nice date night with my wife before watching TSO.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfect spot for work lunch with your associates when working in office. Nice vibe, very clean, tasty food. Have choices for both meat lovers and vegetarians. Not expensive compare to others in the similar locations.
google avatar

Lisette M.

Yelp
Love the drunken chicken salad! It's always perfect. I always go during the work hour lunch rush and I'm in and out in less than an hour with the perfect meal. The service is great always too.

Yelp
"The best french dip in Sacramento - period" Quite a bold statement on the menu for the Prime-rib french dip and I was intrigued. Admittedly I don't have any real experience with french dip, so I honestly wouldn't know any better, but when we asked our server what she recommended and the French dip was her response. There was no other choice. My two compatriots and I embarked on the challenge of the best French Dip in Sacramento. All levity aside, this sandwich was great. While I don't have a basis for comparison, I really enjoyed the cuts of prime rib and the crunch onion rings sandwiched between two pieces of sourdough. The mayo and Swiss cheese really tie it all together and it joined the clean plate club for me I can't comment on if it is truly the best, but being my first it wins by default! The fries were also really good quality but the sandwich was the star of the show. It was a pretty busy day but service was relatively quick and our server was really attentive. We were seated right next to the window and despite being really busy, it was too loud. Located within the Bank of America building the attached bathroom was clean and their is an Old Soul Cafe right across the building. Will definitely visit again for drinks and an early dinner!

Yelp
Stopped here because the adjacent restaurant was closed. This was absolutely a pleasant surprise! Great menu, food and service. Highly recommend the elote dip, sweeet corn cakes and braised short rib. 10/10.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the recommended "best prime rib sandwich in Sac". It didn't disappoint. Amazing grilled bun with a good horseradish mayo. Juicy, tender shredded prime rib topped with cheese and crispy onion straws. Cutest little French fries were awesome. Would definitely recommend. Great service. Chef came out to make sure everything was good.

Yelp
just grabbed lunch here yesterday and as soon as we walked in at least three people said hi and welcome. what a great start! immediately after ordering food, the waitress came back with french fries!!!i thought maybe because my young boys were asking about fries so it came out before my hubby chicken sandwich--- NOPE, they were complimentary! awesome at how kid friendly this place was!!!

Yelp
Easily made me a vegan meal that changed what was on the menu. Very nice people - good for groups. They will split checks if asked when seated.

Yelp
I've had positive experiences here in the past usually picked this location over foundation and decided to come here last night at approximately 5:30 for dinner and happy hour with a group of friends to have our server be Ashley K. 3 of my friends ordered beers and didn't receive them for about 25 minutes. We then ordered food at about 5:40 and did not receive it until about 6:35 all in the meantime Ashley was very rude and did not cater to us at all. Had to ask the hostess for water for our table and extra silverware. On top of getting our food super late the order was wrong and she became very hostile. She did not put the 20% gratuity tip on the bill and proceeded to rip the receipt out of my friends hand to try to put it on. I will be now going to foundation as I have yet to have a problem there with the food or the customer service. I understand if you've had a bad day just express it, don't be silent and rude to patrons. It doesn't make any sense to us....

Yelp
My friend and I chose House Kitchen & Bar because they had a nice happy hour menu, but when I called I was told they no longer have happy hour due to COVID. My friend and I decided to still give them a try anyway. We sat at the bar and the bartender/waiter was friendly and efficient. We both had a blackberry margarita, which was tasty and pretty strong! I ordered the French dip because the menu claims it is "the best French dip in Sacramento - period!" While the portion of meat was generous, it was on the salty side and somewhat bland. There are fried onions on it but I didn't taste them. The fries had a unique seasoning on them (similar to bbq chips), which was tasty. The menu did not state their burgers/sandwiches come with fries, so we had to ask the bartender. My friend had the burger and she enjoyed it. Overall, decent American food. I probably wouldn't return any time soon, but it's not a bad option if you're in the area. Hopefully they bring back their happy hour menu! Note: they validate parking in the garage for one hour only. I ended up paying $6 for parking - my friend was able to find street parking for free.

Yelp
Food is very good. Me, my husband & 5 other people had reservations before an event at the arena. We had cocktails & everyone loved their food. Good place to meet up before a Kings game, concert etc. the service was good, food was good, cocktails were good. Bathroom is out the door & across the lobby & is very clean.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Just don't ask for extra mushroom sauce for the Chicken Marsala.

Shelley P.

Yelp
Yum!!! I had gumbo, my mom had "Drunken Chicken Salad" my dad and husband had french dips. All delicious with great service!

Yelp
One of my favorite to go to is their sandwiches. Any of their orders with sandwiches come with endless order of fries. . Fries are endless and yes so good when your on a fries mode. The fries are crispy and skinny fries one. . I like coming here during lunch time to get some sandwiches. Their sandwiches are good and savory. I like the prime rib sandwich one too. . Last sandwich I had was the salmon blt. The salmon blt was fresh and perfect for lunch. . The service here is great. The servers are on top of it. They refill the nice ice cold drinks even water. The food comes out on time when we have limited time . . Overall my experiences here is great. I have not come here for happy hour but will try some day. Thanks for reading and have a yelptastic day!

Yelp
I had a meeting across the street and had skipped lunch so was on the lookout for a quick to go meal. It was 3:30 on a Thursday and the restaurant only had a few customers. I ordered at the bar and about 5 minutes later, my food was packed and ready to go. I ordered the shrimp po boy and salad and everything was delicious. They did not skimp out on the number of shrimp. They also put the Asian salad dressing on the side. The sandwich was large and filling and full of flavor. It wasn't NOLA good but I was very satisfied and full.
