House of Agnes | Best places to stay in Canterbury

"History seeps out of the walls at the House of Agnes, which dates back to the 15th century, and is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield.   The restored main house has eight elegant bedrooms, with eight more in the equally-old stables. On warm days the beautiful walled garden – the largest in the city – is a complete joy; the honesty bar in the small lounge offers locally-produced beers, along with soft drinks and wine.  The cherry on the cake is Agnes’ location, just 200m from Canterbury West station, making it perfect for a car-free weekend.  " - Annabelle Thorpe

We stayed here for two nights in stable 7 and we really enjoyed it. The room was a decent size and had a good sized wardrobe, drawers and dressing table on which was a well stocked tea tray. The bathroom had a large shower and some toiletries were provided. Everything was very clean and shiny throughout the room.|What I found made this room stand out from other hotel rooms we’ve stayed at in Canterbury was the little quirky touches such as an umbrella to keep you dry when walking from the stable room to the main hotel building. The tray to put your dirty shoes in at the door and the DVD player with a good selection of films to watch. A fan to keep you cool in warmer weather, all provided in the room for your convenience and comfort. Outside the room was a lovely patio area with chairs and a table surrounded by plants. |We didn’t hear any noise from outside and you can hardly hear the trains, they certainly didn’t keep us awake.|The main building of the hotel is very nice and spotless throughout especially the toilets. The garden area outside is beautifully maintained too.|Personally I found the bed to be a bit on the firm side but my husband said it was fine for him. It was a large bed and the bedding was good quality and brilliantly white.|My only negative is the shower head would need replacing as it wasn’t very nice, but I know how bad the water is in Kent.|The breakfast is a pre order system which wasn’t a problem and it was absolutely delicious. Freshly cooked, hot and good quality ingredients. Plenty of choice so no one will go hungry.|Last but certainly not least are the staff at The House of Agnes. Everyone we met throughout our stay made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived until the time we left. Nothing was too much trouble especially at breakfast time. The staff were welcoming and happy in their work and everything ran like clockwork, they make a good team.|We would love to return again and would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone we know. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights in stable room 7. As remarked previously, there is no air conditioning and therefore we opened the windows as it was warm weather. Unfortunately this meant that we heard the first train at 5.30AM as the line was directly behind the stable block. The following night we closed the windows and door and this was a little better. We liked the location of this hotel being near the cathedral and the abbey as well as the many lovely buildings, shops and river. The staff were friendly, in particular Emma who welcomed us. The honesty bar was a bonus and good value. The gardens were lovely to sit in with a refreshing drink after a day of sightseeing. The breakfasts were excellent. In addition to the usual fare, you were offered a "special" each day, all of which were pre-ordered the day before. Be aware of the narrow entrance but this is pointed out on their website!

What a find right in the middle of Canterbury. A quirky old coach house, well looked after with friendly and accommodating staff. We had one of the Stable rooms in the beautiful grounds which was clean and well equipped. The gardens are well maintained and provide outside seating on nice days. There is a live railway line behind the Stable rooms, however this did not spoil our stay. Breakfast options were good with Continental and English choices and a dish of the day. Finally a very useful 'Honesty Bar' providing drinks and snacks. A most enjoyable stay.

We stayed in the Paris Room over the bank holiday weekend. It was so lovely, we absolutely adored our stay. We have stayed before in the Marrakesh room before and equally loved that. But the Paris Room is really special, with its oak beams and wonderful bath. The staff are amazingly helpful, the location is great and the atmosphere is perfect. We will be coming back again.

We love this place and have stayed many times, the themed rooms are well equipped and comfortable, the staff are lovely as is the breakfast, there is also parking on site, which is a huge bonus in Canterbury. (The honesty bar is very well stocked). Highly recommended.

Lovely, lovely hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was wonderful, lots of original features and beautifully furnished. The bed was very comfortable. Rooms are all individually themed and the whole hotel has a unique, original and quirky feel to it. They have a very well stocked 'honesty bar' with a comfotable lounge area. Breakfast was delicious, we has a cooked breakfast, there was also a great selection of cereal, yoghurts, and fruit provided for self service. I highly recommend the House of Agnes and I look forward to our next visit.

We enjoyed our four night stay here in many ways. The location was ideal being within close walking distance of the Cathedral and other tourist attractions and all the cafes and shops surrounding that area. The staff were cheerful and helpful. For a small fee they took our substantial quantities of washing off our hands returning it clean and fresh within 24 hours! The breakfasts were excellent. Several times in the evening we bought some drinks from the honesty bar and took them outside to the peaceful lawns and gardens and lazed away in the outdoor chairs under the trees.||I would have rated the hotel 5 stars but for the lack of air conditioning. We struck a heatwave while we were there, even though it was early summer. The ceiling fan in our room provided some relief but the nights were uncomfortably hot and unfortunately not conducive to a good night's sleep.

A lovely, traditional B&B with all it's charm and character left in place! This B&B is sweet, cosy, warm and goes the extra mile by providing all the essentials for free such as tea, shampoo and conditioner, soap, biscuits and also an umbrella, which came in very useful when it rained on our trip! Breakfast here is a great as there are a few options to what you can have. The rates for this B&B were great considering Canterbury is so popular! It was a really nice play to stay and I would recommend it to anyone!
