House of Agnes | Best places to stay in Canterbury

"History seeps out of the walls at the House of Agnes, which dates back to the 15th century, and is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield.   The restored main house has eight elegant bedrooms, with eight more in the equally-old stables. On warm days the beautiful walled garden – the largest in the city – is a complete joy; the honesty bar in the small lounge offers locally-produced beers, along with soft drinks and wine.  The cherry on the cake is Agnes’ location, just 200m from Canterbury West station, making it perfect for a car-free weekend.  " - Annabelle Thorpe

Our stay at House of Agnes couldn’t have been better. The Marrakesh Suite we stayed in was a cosy two rooms and had two bathrooms. The location was perfect, only two minutes from Canterbury West station, and a minute from Westgate, so ideal for bars, restaurants and the cathedral. It had a well-stocked and priced honesty bar. The service was great, all the staff friendly and helpful. Recommended.

My daughter and I shared a twin room while checking out Canterbury as a potential university choice and Christmas shopping. The room was spotless, very comfortable and the heating and underfloor heating in the bathroom was appreciated in the cold snap that weekend! Breakfast is ordered the night before and the service was great, very well organised and efficient. The honesty bar is a great idea and well stocked. The location is great, nice and quiet but a two minute walk into town. Great to have central parking too although the entrance is not for the faint hearted! We loved the history of the place and weren't disturbed by any Roman ghosts, in fact slept like the dead, the beds were so comfortable and room so cosy! Really glad we have found a good base in Canterbury and will definitely stay again 😊

What a gem. The hotel is situated within walking distance of the city walls. We stayed in one of the stable rooms. Immaculately clean. With a lovely bathroom with a heated floor. An umbrella incase it was raining when we went across to breakfast. A dvd player in the room with a library of films available to borrow. The main hotel was quaint and our welcome was very friendly. There's an honesty bar where people can help themselves to alcohol, soft drinks or hot drinks and the cost is added to the bill. A lovely seating area to enjoy your drink or take it back to your room. Breakfast was amazing, continental or full English or both. The waitresses were lovely. We will definitely be returning. |As a foot note, the parking area is behind the hotel, access to which is through an archway between buildings. My Nissan Qashqai was a tight fit but anything bigger might struggle or not fit. My friend who recommended this hotel drives a huge car she used a local car park without any issues.

Stayed here New Years Eve with my husband and friends. Was totally amazed with everything about the hotel. Wonderful host, very friendly and helpful. Rooms were spotless, extremely comfortable beds, great shower. We stayed in the Mumbai Room and our friends stayed in the Shanghai Room. Breakfast was absolutely delicious, from full English to continental, all freshly prepared and the honesty bar was fantastic. The entrance to the car park is quite narrow but you are pre-warned about this when booking and with a follow up email before your arrival. Will definitely come again and will let friends know about this lovely place. Jackie and Clive Vick

Steeped in history, beautifully decorated with themed city rooms. Several cozy guest areas thoughtfully arranged with a fully equipped honesty bar, books, DVDs, comfortable seating etc. Very comfortable bedding and everywhere squeaky clean. Preorder breakfast was great and had daily specials. My cheese and chive omelette was awesome.|The location is perfect, about an eight minute walk to the cathedral through cobbled, pedestrianised streets with lots of quirky shops and eating places en route. |What an interesting city. Plenty to see.|Safe car parking on site too.|All the staff were delightful, friendly, efficient and welcoming.

We stayed here for two nights in stable 7 and we really enjoyed it. The room was a decent size and had a good sized wardrobe, drawers and dressing table on which was a well stocked tea tray. The bathroom had a large shower and some toiletries were provided. Everything was very clean and shiny throughout the room.|What I found made this room stand out from other hotel rooms we’ve stayed at in Canterbury was the little quirky touches such as an umbrella to keep you dry when walking from the stable room to the main hotel building. The tray to put your dirty shoes in at the door and the DVD player with a good selection of films to watch. A fan to keep you cool in warmer weather, all provided in the room for your convenience and comfort. Outside the room was a lovely patio area with chairs and a table surrounded by plants. |We didn’t hear any noise from outside and you can hardly hear the trains, they certainly didn’t keep us awake.|The main building of the hotel is very nice and spotless throughout especially the toilets. The garden area outside is beautifully maintained too.|Personally I found the bed to be a bit on the firm side but my husband said it was fine for him. It was a large bed and the bedding was good quality and brilliantly white.|My only negative is the shower head would need replacing as it wasn’t very nice, but I know how bad the water is in Kent.|The breakfast is a pre order system which wasn’t a problem and it was absolutely delicious. Freshly cooked, hot and good quality ingredients. Plenty of choice so no one will go hungry.|Last but certainly not least are the staff at The House of Agnes. Everyone we met throughout our stay made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived until the time we left. Nothing was too much trouble especially at breakfast time. The staff were welcoming and happy in their work and everything ran like clockwork, they make a good team.|We would love to return again and would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone we know. Thank you for a lovely stay.

A wonderful place to stay, our stable room was really comfortable, all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast both days was delicious and cooked to order. There is a huge selection of places to have an evening meal near by or you can bring in a takeaway and the hosts very kindly provide cutlery and plates. The honesty bar is a great idea and has a good selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Be aware you need nerves of steel to get your car through the entrance, luckily my partner drove us in & out. Overall we can't recommend this place enough.

Well located near the West Gate, 5 minutes walk from Canterbury West train station. Lovely characterful old building with a gorgeous garden - a little oasis in the City Centre. We stayed in the old stables. Beautiful room with a very comfortable bed and quality linen. Delicious breakfast with the option of a 'special' every day. They don't do evening meals, but there are plenty of take aways and restaurants within easy walking distance and you are able to bring a take away back and eat in the lounge/bar area where there is an 'honesty bar', though Sainsburys is opposite should you prefer to avail yourself of their beverages. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We wouldn't stay anywhere else when visiting Canterbury.

Yelp
A lovely, traditional B&B with all it's charm and character left in place! This B&B is sweet, cosy, warm and goes the extra mile by providing all the essentials for free such as tea, shampoo and conditioner, soap, biscuits and also an umbrella, which came in very useful when it rained on our trip! Breakfast here is a great as there are a few options to what you can have. The rates for this B&B were great considering Canterbury is so popular! It was a really nice play to stay and I would recommend it to anyone!
