The Best Takeout in SF | Eater SF

"This almost-60-year-old Geary Boulevard institution is unabashedly unhip: kitschy bagel mural and all, but on a recent morning a baker’s dozen with scallion cream cheese and whitefish salad felt perfectly nostalgic—the slogan 'The original and still the best' felt apt for that day even if standards evolve." - Eater Staff

Google
Love having this place near my neighborhood. The food is consistently good, fresh and tasty, and my experience with the customer service has been positive as well, with both high efficiency to complete my order quickly and warm professional interaction. I'm writing this review at night thinking about which bagel sandwich I will go grab tomorrow!

Jeff M.

Google
I’ve been here several times and like their bagels and bagel breakfast sandwiches. The bacon egg on toasted bagel is always a favorite.

Kira L.

Google
Good bagels, I got a breakfast sandwich and there was a lot of pepper on the egg, but not nearly enough salt. This is obviously my preference. Also got a chocolate chip muffin that was NOT good, all carbs are usually worth it in my opinion but it was dry and not many chips and almost tasted stale

Raja R.

Google
Nice bagel shop in Sunnyvale Looks family owned and has a good selection of bagels and cream cheese options Fresh orange juice is also good

Koen T.

Google
Very poor customer service. They take your order as if they’re doing you a favor. Customers have plenty of options when it comes to ordering food, and unfortunately, they just lost one

Paddy I.

Google
Bagels are good but the snarky staff is the worst. I am still amused on how they are running the business with lousy behavior

Google
Love this place! Awesome customer service and greatly fresh bagels. Highly recommend

Delicious and so kind! Can’t wait to go back and try more yumminess!!

Yelp
Everytime I walk in, the employees greet me with a smile and are very welcoming. I don't know why but I believe this is the best house of bagels in the area. I come here at least once a week because of how good it is!

Yelp
First off the portion is super small for the price we are paying. I ordered the lox bagel which is supposed to come with red onion, cream cheese, lox and sprouts. I customize and pay additional money to have lox cream cheese instead of regular. When I get my bagel, it's small. There's no sprouts, and it's plain cream cheese. This is an extra bummer cause it's my birthday and this is how it's starting off Not coming here to get scammed anymore. You're better off going to Safeway to get all the things you want.

Yelp
To the employee who will drive this business to the GROUND & the OWNERS WHO ARE AWARE OF SAID EMPLOYEE .... Iv lived in Cupertino for 6 years, the bagel quality is consistent not great but consistent... that's why I enjoy going but I think they have severely over priced bagels. Not only that there is one particular woman who ALWAYS GETS our order wrong!!!! Iv honestly had it, why would I take business to a place that so expensive & the entire order is wrong!!! Some specialty bagels cost more than the "regular" ones & apparently she knows how to charge but not how to select the correct bagels!!! The last 4 visits have been horrible. 1st visit she dropped my bagel on the floor because I had to correct her 2 times what bagel I wanted , 2nd visit she did not put the extra charge cream cheese on a cinnamon sugar bagel & worst of all she didn't even cut them in half something they always do!!! (yea it was a disaster trying to eat it!!!) 3rd visit she gave my husband my bagel w his egg and I had his bagel w mine!! Today's visit I kept it simple I requested 4 bagels one of them the jalapeño..& when I got home she literally gave me whatever she wanted & no JALAPEÑO BAGEL!!!!!... I asked for a Cinnamon and Sugar bagel & she charged us for it but gave us a cinnamon apple bagel!!! I tried to call the place 3 times to keep IT off yelp but they didn't even pick up my call....so I guess it needs to be PUBLIC ..... Get it together if you are going to be charging that much at minimum give the CLIENT WHAT THEY ORDERED!!!!! I really feel scammed & can only imagine how many people have the same experience... I want to believe it's a genuine mistake but House of bagels count your days... this is UNACCEPTABLE... in 2026 I will be look for a NEW BAGEL place.... Bc NO I DONT WANT TO PAY $20 for a BAGEL THAT IS NOT MADE CORRECTLY & you have done NOTHING TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING ISSUE...... if you want a "surprise" bagel order for $20 this is your place & im just being honest... customer service has declined & I don't think it will survive this level of inflation.... Save your peace of mind (above all!!!!!) your money and just go some where else my honest opinion & I my self will not be going back unfortunately after 6 years of loyalty ...... its not worth what I'm paying for!!!!!!!!

Yelp
My wife and I found this place looking for some breakfast while my son warmed up for a soccer match at nearby Pioneer HS. We were so glad we did, because the place definitely knows bagels! I had a sausage omelette on jalapeño bagel sandwich and my wife the bacon omelette on onion bagel sandwich - these were phenomenal sandwiches. From the fluffy egg, to the ample cheese, and perfectly crisped bagels, I wish I lived closer to this place; I'd eat there at least once a week. We ate in the small dining room which was nothing special; it's a bagel shop. But sitting there I could see that it is a neighborhood favorite. They have smears to go and people were coming in non stop and ordering not only from the menu, but custom made orders too. They seem to have a following. If in the area, this is probably the only bagel shop to visit. Delicious food, cool people, and I can't get over this breakfast sandwich!!!

Yelp
Good bagels and good bagel sandwiches. No complaints. But online menu did not list all the bagels. I have to come to the store to get my pumpernickel.

Yelp
Came back from NYC craving a bagel... Three stars if I'm comparing this to a NY bagel. Four stars if I'm comparing it to other NorCal bagel places. They correctly boil the dough in water and then bake them on stone. I couldn't find a list of available bagel flavors online. They had Egg, Whole Wheat, Sesame, Poppy, Salt, Onion, Rye, Pumpernickel, Jalapeño, Rye, Raisin Cinnamon, Blueberry, and Everything (which they confusingly call All-in-One). There may be a few more exotic ones but I'm old school on flavors. The pumpernickel has great texture and the wheat is surprisingly tasty. I wish the everything bagel had more of... well, everything -- esp a pinch of garlic. The cream cheese schmears were fine but the lox was quite good. This is the place to go if you want a bagel. You could easily make the argument it's the best bagel in the Bay Area.

Yelp
Fast friendly service!! Small location hoping they expand. Food was delish!! Parking is limited but street parking is available.

Yelp
Came here for a large group order of bagels for my twins birthday party and this place fit the bill! They have plenty of a variety of bagels - from plain, whole wheat, Asiago, sesame (my favorite!), and plenty of big tubs of cream cheese and fresh smoked salmon. They also have cut up fruit in packages too which I really appreciated - saved me the trip to the grocery store!! They have a good selection of bakery items too - I tried the bagel wrapped hot dog and it was tasty! I'd definitely recommend coming here if you are looking for finger food for a party or if you want to grab some bagels for breakfast for the week. Location is great as there is plenty of parking! Service was okay, friendly enough as they were welcoming. Overall 4.5/5 stars

Yelp
Holy crap the person taking my order was rude! Just really short answers and almost annoyed with me. First time here so was asking things like, "Can I get it sliced?" or " Can it be toasted?". A simple "I'm sorry! Unfortunately we don't" would've sufficed. I also asked about the cream cheese and what sizes they come in and she responded "Go take a look". Geeez, grumpy much? Anyway, after purchasing everything I went to go grab my cream cheese and was looking at the other flavors out of curiosity. I then hear back from the counter, "Hey! I charged you for a plain." Like really? You thought I was going to take something else like it was some grand scheme of mine that I had been planning my my basement for the last few months? Give me a break. Don't act like some esteemed bagel shop out of NYC. At the end of the day this is par for the course for a bagel shop in the burbs.

Yelp
Originally from Montreal, no bagels except Montreal-style bagels excite me; because they're just a bunch of doughs in the shapes of a donut. The House of Bagels just have a FULL house of bagels in the shapes of donuts, and not much else. It's not their fault, it's just that they're not up in the style of Montreal-style Fairmount Bagels which has been in business for 100-+ years, same recipes, same locations ,and same YUMMY taste. It's gotta be wood-burning stove, regular oven just don't cut it, it is what it is!

Paddy I.

Yelp
Very rude customer service -- run by unscrupulous and blatantly racist people. I watched the guy in front of me get noticeably better treatment simply because he was from another country. One woman in particular was extremely rude, completely indifferent to customers waiting, and made it clear she didn't care. The bagels might be good, but the attitude here is rotten. And it's not just me -- other reviews confirm the same rude treatment.

Yelp
I got lox bagel, ham and egg bagel and combo bagel Was nice not bad. Very nice service Menu is rich Location is not bad

Yelp
This place is a solid 4+ and an enjoyable place to stop in the morning when I crave my whole wheat cinnamon raisin beagles. This time was a nice treat as they had fresh squeezed OJ The staff is very friendly and they do a good job to move people in line as it can get busy. Has a few interior tables and beyond bagels how good selection of muffins and fresh made bagel sandwiches. In a mini mall setting so plenty of parking

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE. I always go here before I go to work. They work pretty fast so if you see a line in there, you don't have to worry too much bc they work QUICK! I usually get their chicken salad, tuna salad, or the western bagel. Personally, my all time favorite is the tuna salad. They also serve some sweet treats like brownies, cookies, smoothies, so if you feel like you need something sweet with your food, I def recommend looking at their bakery items! It's your typical bagel shop, the ambiance looks and feel homey and not a lot of decor in the place. Will always come back here whenever I crave a bagel before I go to work!

Yelp
I usually buy the Viet coffee with a BLT bagel and its so good. The customer service is so nice and they are always so well mannered and always in a good mood. Though the food is expensive since I usually end up spending a lil over 20 bucks here for the two items, I think its worth it. I will definitely visit as often as my wallet allows me lol 10/10

Yelp
Overall, I greatly enjoyed my experience eating at this bagel shop. The food was freshly made and mouth watering to eat, along with the staff being polite and giving my family and I free water cups to go along with our food. The quaint and quiet vibe of this cafe was also appreciated to be surrounded in (: I would highly recommend checking out this bagel shop if you get the chance!

Yelp
I came in for a breakfast sandwich. I arrived and there was no customers and parking right in front. I checked out the menu and it was limited in options. Popular choices were no where to be seen. I ended up trying an egg with mushroom and other things on a croissant (I ordered 2 of these sandwiches). I asked the lady if there was a way to leave out the green onions as she put it together but she said no. As I saw her put the order together I saw it going into the microwave. I also wanted to grab some bagels but the lady was too busy with my order and by the time she asked I had forgotten I wanted to try them. While I waited I saw the owners of to the side just staring at me. The lady finished with my order I paid and left. The sandwich was very bland. The egg had no seasoning and tasted like the food you eat at the hospital. The egg being microwaved compromised the usual taste of it. Even with all the additions it lacked any flavor. I had a difficult time finishing. It wouldn't of mattered if this was on a bagel it still would of been flavorless. It was not a flavor profile I enjoyed so I will not be back.

C D.

Yelp
Don't ask for a all meat breakfast sandwich $20 is very unreasonable. I got the sandwich and 2 pastries and it was $26 and some change...

Kate M.

Yelp
Excellent bagels, we were visiting from the east coast and know good bagels. Great options for breakfast bagels sandwiches and good choices for bagel flavors. 10/10 would visit again!!!

Vani R.

Yelp
The bagels were great! What made them not so great was the rush to order. Very casual restaurant.

Yelp
My teenagers, husband, and I really love eating here and getting the bagel sandwiches to go. They're always delicious, fresh, and the service is always friendly!

Yelp
AVOID THIS BAGEL PLACE UNLESS YOU LOVE RUDE AND POOR SERVICE. First time coming here and it'll 100% be my last. I'd rather wipe whatever is hanging on my buttocks to use as cream cheese than come here. Here's why: This morning at 7:50AM, I purchased 6 bagels with cream cheese, which is approximately $24. These bagels would be for 6 different people but the lady who rang me up gave me 2 knives. I simply asked for 4 more knives. "FOUR MORE KNIVES?!!" The lady exclaimed in disbelief. "Yes....please?" I was caught off guard. "FOUR MORE KNIVES, HUH?" She smirked and reluctantly put 4 more knives into the bag of 6 bagels and 2 knives. I'm still not sure why she had such a hard time providing me with the 4 knives to go along with the bagels. Perhaps those 4 knives were made of gold? Perhaps those 4 knives were passed down from 10 different generations? Perhaps those 4 knives smelled like the stuff she wiped off her buttocks? Whatever the case, the lady at 7:50AM lost it when I asked for 4 knives. Please avoid this House of Bagels at all costs. Unless you like buttocks cream cheese ;)

Yelp
Delicious Bagels ! I recommend all the bagels with cream cheese or with egg and favorite meat.

Yelp
A solid bagel experience if that's what you are looking for . They have been around for awhile and quality has stayed consistent . Always love visiting this spot and grabbing a toasted bagel with cream cheese whenever I visit my childhood roots in Sunnyvale :) staff was very friendly and store was clean . Also love that they offer PEERLESS coffee , yum . The parking is easy as it is in a shopping center .

Yelp
Terrible, used to be the best bagels, but they have resorted to some quicker methods for making these bagels, they are bready and not chewy like they are supposed to be!! A darn shame!! I went here for years and years and now I will not be returning, I wonder when they decided to stop making their bagel in the traditional boiled then baked method??? Does anyone know?
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
I grew up on East Coast bagels but I have to admit that after 10 years of trying bagel shops in the Bay Area, HOB is really the best. While they are loftier than a traditional NY water bagel, they have a similar taste and chew, and they are pretty tasty. I mostly get them without fixings, preferring to do it myself at home, but the breakfast sandwiches and lox bagel sandwiches are good. I would drive out of my get these.
google avatar

Yelp
Great mom and pop shop but I still think it's a little pricey, but we are in Silicon Valley so can't really compare
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty average bagel shop. Decent choices on menu and well stocked. Prices pretty average too. Got an egg and sausage garlic bagel and it tasted good. Convenient place.

Yelp
I've never really liked bagels. I've always thought they were so dry and doughy. That is until I tried the bagels at House of Bagels. I'm not sure what I was eating before but House of Bagels really opened my eyes on what real bagels are supposed to be like. My father in law picked up a whole bunch of bagels for breakfast and I was hesitant to try because of my past experience, but I tried one. It was very good. It wasn't doughy or dry at all. House of Bagels have so many varieties. I think I had the Apple Cinnamon one that day. I just topped it with some of their specialty cream cheese and it was delicious. They sell a variety of cream cheese too. We got the strawberry one and regular cream cheese. We liked it so much that we got some for the morning before we flew back home. What a treat. Now that we're home, we've been looking for a bagel place. We found a place, but it's just not the same. Hoping to come back to House of Bagels on our next visit.

Ramzi J.

Yelp
Ive been coming here for years and have held off making a review until now, but frankly, this place has never improved their service or prices across the 10 years ive been coming. They charge way too much for plain bagels, have constantly priced my purchases wrong, and close at random times when they are seemingly not busy. The bagels are fine, but not amazing. They will charge anywhere between $5 to $7 for a plain bagel w cream cheese depending on the flavor, and usually take about 30 seconds to make it. Im just pretty tired of the only bagel place in my area having slowly worse service and prices over years and years. Please pay attention to the reviews guys.

Jack J.

Yelp
I have been coming to "Ho-bags" frequently since I I started high school in 2012. When I stared to work at a pizzeria in 2016 I realized I could save time by placing an order over the phone. Today when I called I asked to place and order over the phone and was met told "We can't take orders over the phone, we are to busy. The line is long, come inside and order" The entire reason I called was so I didn't have to wait inside the tiny waiting area regardless of how busy they were. To turn a single order away because "it's to busy" is pathetic. And no I did not go inside and wait.
google avatar

Coral T.

Yelp
So good, so hot, and so quick! It's a great bite to eat before a hike or as a brunch item. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Leyina C.

Yelp
This place has been my go to spot for fast breakfast for many years. ! I usually order the western omelet on a croissant but today I was inspired to try something new and made a special ordered for my bagel, which is not on the menu. It was delicious. Cheddar Cheese Jalapeno Bagel with egg, cheese, sausage, avocado, jalapeno smear Their food quality is 5 out of 5 and service is fast and friendly. I just wish they had chorizo sausage patty and pepper jack cheese, or offer something different once in a while.

Kim L.

Yelp
Service is terrible. The people behind the counter are rude and so rushed. They don't look at you when they speak, which makes it very hard to understand.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
A sunnyvale staple bagel shop! If you are in the area and you're looking for a delicious bagel sandwich, this is the spot. their breakfast sandwiches are super good. You can not go wrong with a bacon egg and cheese on a jalapeno bagel. The bagel and cream cheese is also a classic. Blueberry bagel with strawberry cheese cream... don't sleep on it. Overall: Highly recommend for all your bagel needs.
google avatar

Beth K.

Yelp
What does a night shift nurse crave after a long 13-hour shift at the hospital? A hearty bagel and egg sandwich served piping hot with prompt and friendly service. The bagel was warm, freshly toasted, and wonderfully chewy. It was cut in half cleanly and well-wrapped in paper for effortless devouring while driving. Plenty of napkins were included in my bag without me having to prompt them. I arrived shortly after the shop opened, and they were well-stocked with a large variety of bagels, cream cheese schmears of assorted flavors, bottled beverages, and other non-bagel pastries. Also grabbed a chocolate chip cookie (huge), a butter croissant (fresh, soft, airy, and buttery), and a couple of bagel dogs for the family to enjoy--everything was very much enjoyed. The two ladies working at the counter were lovely, helpful, friendly, and efficient. COVID-pandemic friendly: Everyone was masked and hand sanitizer for customers was provided. They accept and prefer touch-less payment methods (i.e. Apple Pay, etc.) House of Bagels @ Hollenbeck Ave.--you make it easy to love you guys!

Yelp
We've been settling for Safeway bagels for quite some time, primarily because it's convenient to pick up a cheap dozen when we're doing our regular grocery shopping. After suffering through mediocrity for so long, we decided to make a trip to House of Bagels to see if we could find a more satisfying bake. It was rather busy on the morning we went, and the staff behind the counter seemed a little harried. We decided to go with the baker's dozen, choosing a selection of their non-"premium" (i.e. not cheese-based) bagels. My favorite was the onion, which had a coating of crispy but not burned sweet onions. Other favorites were the egg and rye. As a whole, the bagels had the right texture and moisture that is expected from a proper bagel. We also picked up a tub of their garden vegetable cream cheese, which was a little disappointing because we felt that it was lacking a bit in flavor and texture from the vegetables. Service was okay. I guess when it's as busy as it was when we were there it's hard to keep a smile on, and they were just a little terse with their answers and impatient as we made our bagel selections.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
Bagels were to fat and not wide enough. Taste was good but the plain bagels were hard the next day. Overall we prefer Bagel Street Cafe.
google avatar

Kathy T.

Yelp
I love the bagels at this location of House of Bagels. The staff is quick, and I am amazed at how many orders they can complete in a short period of time. The lines can be long at certain times of the day and they often have uber eats/door dash type orders as well. There is not a lot of seating, but perhaps it's not necessary in a bagel place. I usually eat outside or at home. Prices have increased significantly in the past couple of years, but this is true of most places that I frequent.
google avatar

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Solid bagel place for Cupertino. House of Bagels gets busy at lunch on weekdays because it's near the highschool but it moves pretty quickly in the morning.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
For me, I feel like I rotate through my bread/carb phases...Sometimes I am craving buttered sourdough toast, sometimes all I want is a croissant, but this week all I've been thinking about is having a toasted bagel. I heard good things about House of Bagels and gave it a try! I got an "all-in-one"/everything bagel with garlic & herb cream cheese. I went in the middle of the day and the bagel still tasted fresh and yummy. It had a good chew to it and didn't feel like I'm just eating plain dough. The garlic cream cheese to bagel ratio was also perfect. It's a great snack or breakfast.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Great start to my Tuesday morning. Came here NEEDING a lox bagel. Saw a small line and thought I'd have to wait, but NO! Their speedy service and efficient checkout made my bagel experience great. The lox bagel itself was fresh and delicious. Just the right amount of cream cheese and salmon for me!
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
So tasty! Their bagels are always fresh and hot! My favorite is their "all-in-one" (everything) but their baked goods are amazing as well. The place is small and can get busy, just go early!

Francisco C.

Yelp
Nothing special here. Bagels sub par. My bagel sandwich consisting of bagel, egg, cheddar cheese, bacon. All 4 ingredients were sub par. Will not be returning.

Hawa T.

Yelp
Food is good. We've tried bagels and pizza. There's a line but it goes fast. It's quickly becoming a staple. Not much ambiance to comment on. The one we go to doesn't really have indoor seating

Craig R.

Yelp
Awesome bagels Good scones too. But gotta be there early for those. Ohh. And the bagel dogs. Mmm mmm.
google avatar

Michaela D.

Yelp
I tried coming in here before a while ago and no staff was around. I stood there some time before just heading someplace else. Recently I got the chance to actually try it and it wasn't really worth the wait. I love to try different kinds of bagels, but also have some classic favorites I go to at any store. I was pleased when I noticed they had flavored mini bagels! Awesome, I could get a bagel dog I know I love and try a mini bagel with it. Out of every mini bagel except plain. Okay... that puts a damper on things, but I understand. I order an full-size Asiago bagel instead. I can save the other half for later, right? For some reason she gives me two bagels though? I understand mishearing... I did have to repeat myself more than usual already, but I went from wanting one mini bagel and they somehow thought I decided to upgrade to two full-sized bagels? I didn't notice until I left the store and I simply wasn't going back. It's a good thing they make good bagels.

Matt J.

Yelp
First off I will say that House of Bagels makes the best bagels in my area. I have gone there for years and love their bagels...however... First thing I have noticed is that the prices there have just about doubled in the past few years. I bought two bagel dogs, a dozen sesame bagels and some cream cheese and it came to $44! This has slowed down my bagel buying, but some days you NEED a bagel ya know? What really pissed me off this visit was what while they have jacked the pricing way up, someone also decided to save $0.09 per bag and bought the flimsiest paper bags imaginable. Two step out the door and the bottom fell out of the bag and 7 of my bakers dozen were rolling away from me on the ground all over the parking lot. WTF House of Bagels! Whoever buys your bags needs to know that whatever you saved on bag costs is costing you your reputation with one loyal customer! I doubt you are going to lower your prices...can you at least use bags that get the product back to my house. It's a drag to throw some VERY expensive bagels in the garbage because your bags failed! grrrr
