I have been coming here since I was a kid and the food has had its ups and downs over the decades but I got delivery tonight and whoever cooked it must have come back from the 90’s/early 2000’s. It was exactly as good as it used to be.

Michael M.

Google
Had the family dinner for 3 meal. Came with 2 wonton and a egg rolls per person. Got the mandarin meal, which came with 3 courses and rice. As well as egg drop soup. Got a side order of hot and sour soup. Both were phenomenal!!!! Are waitress was friendly and attentive. Overall experience for price and food made this a 10/10!

Lillian A.

Google
The best Chinese restaurant I have ever been too. I live in Alabama and every time I come to Iowa it’s a must eat. I drive 15 hours just for those crab rangoons!!

B G

Google
Family has been coming here for a very long time. Like a different time/place......from the parking lot to the inside decor, it's like a time capsule from the 1980s. Ordered takeaway this last time for five people, and it was the first time being back in several years, but the service was great, and the food was awesome......still my favorite egg rolls from a Chinese restaurant....only critique is that the crab rangoons could have had more cream cheese :)

Courtney F.

Google
I ordered Crab Rangoon’s, Peppered beef, And chicken chow mein! The crab Rangoon were greasy and I’m pretty sure they put party dip sour cream in them instead of actual raccoon ingredients. They were Way too overpowering! The chow mein was literally Ramen noodles, and it was like soup and bland no flavor. The pepper beef was literally a soup fajita. Will not be back!

Silas P.

Google
Tastes like old oil. Brought us out cold crab Rangoon 2 minutes after we ordered, clearly just sitting around. Got orange chicken thinking they couldn't screw that up. Ingendients couldn't have been cheaper or lower quality if they tried. Chicken was shaved and fried. Overall, going to go get ice cream to get the taste of old oil out I'd my mouth

Lori H.

Google
Great food. I feel the egg rolls have improved 😋

Google
I try to like this place, but something just seems off. The drinks are good, the staff is wonderful and friendly. But the food is just "eh." It's an Iowa version of Chinese. Other guests during my visit seemed to enjoy what they ordered. If you're looking for bland and "just ok" Chinese food, House Of China is your place..

Yelp
House of China is a great place to enjoy Americanized style Chinese cuisine & my favorite Chinese restaurant in Dubuque! I am honestly surprised by some negative reviews because I have never had any bad food or negative experiences here ever! House of China for me represents comforting nostalgia! I grew up in Dubuque during the 90s, moved away, & recently came back to try House of China happy it is still around. The beautiful exquisite Chinese art decor, low light ambiance, & their food is exactly like it was back in the day which I love! I try crab rangoons appetizers from many different Chinese restaurants & House of China has some of the best hot freshly fried crab rangoons I have ever had as well as some amazing eggrolls!!!! I love that they serve traditional complimentary hot tea in beautiful tea cups with dinner! My husband absolutely loves their combination fried rice with beef, chicken, & shrimp. They put alot of delicious fried eggs in their fried rice but my husband and I think it makes it taste really delicious but if you are not big on eggs you may have to request less eggs. Definitely try their beef and broccoli with rice which is really great classic menu item that I often get. House of China has decent prices with lots of amazing different diverse menu options such as the egg drop soup, hot sizzling chicken, egg fou young, fried rice, etc. We have also had really great service and our waiter was really on top of making sure our water glasses were full even before it got all the way empty lol! Overall, House of China is a wonderful classic Chinese staple cuisine in Dubuque, IA!

Karen A.

Yelp
What happened to house of china?? Sizzling rice soup had no sizzle because it was lukewarm and the shaker lid when the salt was added. Barely edible. Crab Rangoon might have been okay if not cold. Kung Bao Beef was eh. All sauces taste pretty much the same. Used to love it years ago, something went wrong. Server did a good job.

Yelp
Disappointing food. Being gluten free in Dubuque there are not many options. This lunch went sideway. Bad tasting shrimp, chicken and meat. Sauce was watery. Service was fine. Restaurant is very clean. I will not return. Narrowing my options.
google avatar

Yelp
I sat down at 6:45pm got my food very fast. With in 5 minutes the waitress handed me my check. By 7:05 pm I had decided this food was absolutely tasteless the vegetables were too hard to eat and I had, had enough. After complaining to the girl at the register all got was well that will be $21.50. Wow 31 country that was the worst Chinese ever. Paul

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Fast and friendly service and delicious food. If you don't get the shrimp toast you're doing it wrong!

Laurie

Yelp
I ordered fried rice and didn't get it. The garlic chicken was runny. The crab rangoon and egg rolls were fabulous. Very kind person on the phone and delivery.
google avatar

Yelp
This centrally-located Dubuque restaurant is a safe, solid food experience. There is plenty of parking, as they are in a strip mall. They nailed the entry, as it's a good look inside that begins with a superb visual of Chinese-themed artwork and objects. Was there to catch up with a good friend, and it was a nice setting. Our server was kind and didn't rush us, and I appreciated that. The restrooms were clean. I liked my chicken and vegetable selection, as it was a good-sized portion, and was a good all-around dish, served quickly and at the right temperature. There's nothing wrong with an average food experience, and that's what I enjoyed. I will return!

Yelp
This was for a delivery order. The food was inedible and prices were not same as on website. Each item was $2 more than listed. Had two orders of cold, greasy crab meat rangoons, OILY (how is that even possible) Garlic Chicken and while i ordered a full order of Mongolian Chicken the container was only half full and very watery. Would never recommend this restaurant if this is what you get.

Christy G.

Yelp
This restaurant was a staple in Dubuque for many years. Ever since the original owners sold the restaurant it has never been the same. The food is terrible now. Such a shame. I miss the former owners and recipes so much.
google avatar

Debi B.

Yelp
Extremely bland food. This did not taste like any Chinese food I've ever had anywhere else.
google avatar

Brady L.

Yelp
Garbage....if owner Johnny spent less time at the casino and more on food it would be better... Food absolutely was terrible...I aspect more!

Dawn T.

Yelp
The egg drop soup was the best I ever had. The hot & sour was on the spicy side but delicious. The house special fried rice was friendly to my mother's reduced sodium diet and it was delicious. The other dish we ordered was chicken with Chinese vegetables. It was lightly sauced with non salty but flavorful sauce. The decorations were outstanding. My father and I took pictures of the lapidary artwork and traditional watercolor paintings. Complimentary oolong tea is served in a pot on the table. The bathrooms are very clean smelling like bleach. Which is the only smell I want in a bathroom. Staff was friendly and attentive without hovering. My family enjoyed our first visit and look forward the next.

Christine R.

Yelp
We ordered sesame chicken for delivery. It arrived and the chicken was missing the sesame seeds and tasted sweet, more like orange chicken. I called to let them know. A nice girl put "her manager" on. He was very rude. He said the sesames melt. What?? I told him seeds do not melt. Then he said that usually when there is a mistake he gets two calls and they call "right away!" I called as soon as it arrived.... Ridiculous service. We won't order there again.
google avatar

Hanna S.

Yelp
Service was great, food was not. Worst Chinese food I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Sesame chicken was soggy, covered in a bland beef like gravy and the vegetables were RAW. Sweet and sour chicken had lumpy sauce and was very bland. Potstickers must have come from the frozen section at the Walmart, they sucked. Definitely won't be back, ever.

Laura G.

Yelp
ordered food to be delivered and they did not give me the right order-called back and the woman who answered the phone argued with me about order. They gave me the wrong thing and wouldn't do anything about it! Terrible customer service
google avatar

JJ L.

Yelp
Do not recommend I got Mongolian beef. It was watery It was not good and my stomach hurts after eating it. But the service was ok our waiter was really

Mary B.

Yelp
One of the worst experiences I have ever had. I ordered the shrimp fried rice and got food poisoning from it. The worst part of it all is that the food was not even good. Very below average Chinese food even for Iowa
google avatar

Izaah K.

Yelp
It's ok. We come here every time we are in Dubuque. Good thing is that it is the same every time - food, decor, service, etc... Service isn't the best or the worst. Lunch is inexpensive.

Lydia R.

Yelp
eating there since i was a kid. they give amazing service! the food is great! get three delight spicy no carrot add broccoli!!
google avatar

Beck Green J.

Yelp
Thus used to be a family favorite. Stopped in last night. I ordered the seafood hot plate, shrimp, scallops and imitation crab. The quantity was OK but that's the best I can say about it. The scallops must have been sliced horizontally to make it look like you had more than one or two. They were tough and tasted more like chicken than scallops. But they were real because the pushed for was not removed, making them tough and chewy. I gave them a 2 because my husband enjoyed his Mongolian Bed. We hadn't been there for awhile. They no longer give you soup and wontons with your dinner. Super disappointed. Entrees are around $13
google avatar

Naoko M.

Yelp
This place reminds me of Chinese places I used to go in Japan and here in the states--- so that's like in 90s! Hard for me to explain but their food is a bit different than many of Chinese places (buffet or a little shop to serve lots of to go). Food is tasty. Not overly sweet, salty, spicy.. Tasty. Their egg rolls and soup are really good. If you are around on Sunday lunch time, try their lunch buffet (under $9 I think).

Maggie O.

Yelp
We've been long time customers but food isn't as good as in the past. Our past two dine-in meals were not the same-- very disappointing. And we waited far too long for our food (at 5 pm on a weeknight) as takeout orders seemed to have priority. Very few tables were dining in. I usually order the hot plate sizzling chicken. They no longer pour it on a hot plate and it did not contain any of the whole chili peppers. But It was far too spicy--and the sauce didn't taste the same. It looked like the chicken was swimming in tomato soup since there was so much red spice in the sauce. Way too much sauce, much less chicken. My husband thought his chicken had been cooked several days before as it tasted "off". . Prices have increased due to Covid . We were appalled to see/hear the owner (Kevin) yelling profanities at his wait staff in front of customers. And then he went on a tirade in the kitchen. We almost walked out We won't return.

Annyise J.

Yelp
Terrible. Ordered a house fried rice. There were more eggs than anything. The rice was still white. I had 2 shrimps and chicken was white I'm talking white like the rice. The beef texture was terrible. The crab Rangoon straight trash didn't even taste like it should have. Didn't even try my beef and broccoli seeing how everything else was terrible. Wasted $32 DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. RUUUUUUUUUUUUUN far away

Yelp
The food is shameful. I ordered pork egg foo yung and my wife ordered cashew chicken - nothing exotic - which came with fried rice, egg drop soup and fried wontons. The egg drop soup was full of raw onions, was gelatinous, grey and overly salted. I couldn't find the eggs. When our entrees arrived, I was surprised to see that they looked identical - some kind of gray meat with vegetables in a greasy brown sauce. I thought there'd been a mistake, but underneath my pile of stuff was one egg foo yung omelette about 4 inches in diameter and obviously pre-made. My wife's dish had 6 cashews placed on top of the meat/veggie combo, so I guess that constituted "cashew chicken". Both dishes tasted like pure salt - nothing more. There was absolutely no flavor. The "fried rice" consisted of white rice (appeared to be instant) with a few peas mixed in and again, a ton of salt. The fried wonton contained no meat (probably fortunate) and tasted like old vegetable oil. The omelette had no meat or veggies - just eggs and just as flavorless, except for lots of salt. Finally, the server came to the table a few minutes after bringing our food and told us that she was leaving - that if we needed anything, we could go "up front" and talk with the hostess. After I complained, the hostess took 10% off our bill. I wouldn't eat here again even if they gave the food away for free.

Yelp
We have never tried House of China and wanted to see if it really was the best. I've only been craving Chinese food for 2 whole weeks. I ordered Generals chicken, 2 orders of egg rolls and crabmeat Rangoon's. Hubby ordered a combination fried rice with added curry. Mine dish was very tasty and I loved the rangoons so much but unfortunately the egg rolls smelled like grease and tasted like grease; too greasy too eat. His combo fried rice lacked the curry he asked for and had a whole 2 shrimp but otherwise yummy in flavor. Would go again but best in Dubuque? Idk gonna have to try a few other spots and see...

Yelp
HoC has been a staple throughout growing up in Dubuque. After living in other large cities in the last 8 years, it holds up as the best Chinese restaurant in the tri-state area. The bf and I get take out probably once a month and it is a perfect date night in, with little clean up! The sesame beef is amazing, snow white chicken (with some added heat) is low carb and very tasty. Don't forget the chicken fried rice - we have seriously tried to recreate this at home and cannot... It is so good. The crab rangoons & egg rolls are also so worth it, make it a feast!

Izzy H.

Yelp
I've called in orders multiple times and they have always been ready within 10-15 minutes like they say. Great portions for price and good tasting food. I enjoy a good Chinese restaurant so I'm glad House of China is so close to me. Chicken with Chinese vegetables is my favorite. The egg drop soup is great but the first egg drop soup I've had with vegetables in it. Couldn't give 5 stars because I've never dined in so I can't speak for that area.
google avatar

Garrett B.

Yelp
Terrible. With all the Corvid19 stuff going around and Asian businesses being affected I thought I'd order some Chinese food and support the restaurant. First time eating here and I ordered Sesame Chicken, my favorite, for delivery. Got here fast but it was nothing more than a watery mess and was 75% veggies. The menu says "lightly breaded to a crispness. Nope, chicken was limp soggy, tiny pieces of nothing. Tasted like hot sugar water. My fiancé liked her food tho. I called to see if I could get a refund on just MY food and told them my concerns. The manager sounded like one of those people you see on those restaurant rescue shows. Talked down to me, crapped on every other restaurant in town, but insisted he had the best food in town. Do not eat here.
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
The food was really good. The wife is picky but even she enjoyed it. They bring out black chai that is tasty. The restaurant is of course themed as one might think. The only 2 things that I noticed for any downside is the bathrooms should be tightened up a little and they don't bring you a fortune cookie. Lol. Not a deal breaker. Very reasonably priced also. We'll be back again.

Sid P.

Yelp
Food was over salted, egg drop soup awful. Both of our dishes was the worst Chinese food we have had!

Jeff D.

Yelp
Eaten here since the 1980s . Menu has never changed to my knowledge. I order delivery 2 times a month these days. Always the same ,as I want it to be. Always good. No complaints

Yelp
I will NEVER again patronize the House of China in Dubuque, Iowa. This evening's experience: Entree, Soup, Egg Rolls, etc. A $35 bill for both of us and we picked it up to take home, approximately 20 minutes away. When we unpacked it, there was no rice - NONE. When I called House of China, I was transferred to a man who was abrupt and curt with me: "What do you want me to do?," he kept asking. Finally, he said, "I will pay for your [entree]." I said that was not acceptable. I said that was like ordering a hamburger and not getting a bun. "What do you want me to do!" he exclaimed. So, I gave him two options: (1) Deliver rice to Zwingle; or (2) Comp our meal. He refused to do either. I then indicated a third option: We will stop being customers. He said that was fine and hung up on me. I have been a customer since that restaurant was in Asbury Square... They don't care. If they don't have customer focus... What else? As an aside, they always win "Best Chinese Restaurant" in the Hospice of Dubuque Best Fest, but they will never come give free samples away like other winners do: Mario's; Las Aztecas; Catfish Charlie's; Happy Joe's and the like. We have other Chinese options.

Yelp
Hands down the best Americanized Chinese food in Dubuque. I am talking total Dubuque style. They serve sweet n sour in ketchup bottles... Bonus: it's so tasty I want to drink it out of the bottle! Don't know if it's made in house but I love that it's cold! At dinner you always get free tea. The servers are pretty awesome for mostly high school or college aged kids. Their lunch specials are out of this world good deals! Their delivery is always worth the wait but never takes more than an hour (I lived down town and I think that's why it took that long because once I moved up near the mall I always got my food within 40 minutes) and has never been spilled or wrong for me. (I lived in Dubuque for three years and ate their lunch delivery religiously 4-5 times a month) Egg rolls and crab Rangoons are the best you can get in a 70 mile radius. The entree I always get isn't even listed as a house special but it really should be. Their Mongolian beef always ha fresh tasting onions and never a stale rice stick. And the beef tastes like beef not some odd gelatin based meat product you would get at some buffets. Also the sauce isn't blobby and has lots of flavor especially if you as them to make it spicy! Bottom line come here it's by far the best Chinese around town. If you really want a buffet wait for Sunday and enjoy all you can eat favorites from their menu on the buffet!
google avatar

Victor L.

Yelp
I read about this being the best place for Chinese food. Came here for dinner, it's a buffet style restaurant. It was pretty much an "all you can eat" experience. The service was super great, the busboys were very attentive and fast to replenish your fountain drink. Nonetheless, the place was also well kept. As far as the food options, they offer traditional food; soups, rice, chicken, beefs, pork, shrimp, vegetarian, fruit. If you're in town it's worth the try.

Michelle B.

Yelp
Food was extremely salty - egg drop soup and almond chicken that we ordered for delivery. Mongolian chicken was mostly onion
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
My daughter had the beef Lo Mein and it was very bland. I had the beef with vegetables and had a little more flavor but not much. Brought home lots of leftovers in hopes to doctor it up. Egg drop soup was very good as well as the win tins, a little to rich for me, but my daughter enjoyed them.
google avatar

Anne B.

Yelp
Their Mandarin Chicken rocks. This place is good, traditional Chinese food. Lots of options, pretty Americanized, but it reminds me of The Golden Wall (an old Sioux Falls, SD great Chinese spot). Recommend any time beyond Sunday brunch; their buffet on Sundays from 11-2 was ok. (not a lot of selection) and they don't do order from the menu at that time.... Get the mandarin chicken.;.) yummo.

Ed S.

Yelp
Restaurant was clean and pleasant. Servers were very friendly and made me feel welcome. Menu offered the typical Chinese American offerings. Servings were generous. I had the Chicken Broccoli. It was OK. It wasn't bad but wasn't mind blowing either. Would have liked to see either some traditional dishes or something new.

Sara H.

Yelp
Hearing all the rant and rave about House of China in Dubuque, Iowa, I thought I would give it a try. I ordered Mongolian Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Crab Rangoon. The Crab Rangoon was absolutely delicious, however the Mongolian Beef tasted like the cardboard that it was delivered in. The container was only half full and there was more onions than beef. The Chicken was over done, dry and tasted like garlic. For the price, I would have expected better tasting food and portions. I will not eat at House of China in the future.

Rev. Maxine M.

Yelp
Went here on my birthday the service was ok-ish the food was mediocre at best not ever again and the place was cold
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Wish I could give 0 stars to this place. Delivery took forever to get cold food and the food having leaked out of the container into the bottom of the bag. Called and even sent pictures to the owner cell phone to get no satisfaction. Last time, never again. Order at your own risk here folks.
google avatar

Jon N.

Yelp
It was the only decent looking restaurant that wasn't a fast food chain in town. I had diarreah for 2 days after eating here.
google avatar

Candace N.

Yelp
Never eat at this establishment! Our food was disgusting to say the least and cold. I have never wrote a review about a restaurant until today. We called to complain and the manager continued to argue on the phone with my husband and then me. He said "the customer is never right." I am appalled by the customer service, the manager, and the food. Will be telling friends, family, and all review sites how awful the experience was. Wish I looked at the hundreds of other bad reviews about this place before thinking of ordering here!
google avatar

Dianne F.

Yelp
Went there for their Sunday lunch buffet, no buffet at all, they give you a plate and they serve it up and not much of choice of food. 4 items on a buffet and it was awful. never going their again.
google avatar

Joe F.

Yelp
After having moved out of town to the East Coast, I haven't been to House of China in at least 4 months. Everyone told me that the food that was once good is now terrible. They were were right. My chicken fried rice was the most disgusting dish I have ever been served at this place. It used to be great, but now it's nothing but grease. After the waitress brought out my food, I refused it and asked if they had changed their recipe. She said no and I asked why there were no veggies in it. She took it back and brought out a new plate and said that she had mixed up a carry out order and mine. She put the plate in front of me and I literally found 2 peas and 1 carrot. I didn't feel like arguing so I tried to eat it and after two bites I stopped. There was entirely too much EGG and GREASE and it made me sick to my stomach. I have a feeling they just tossed a few pieces of vegetables on it and served it to me. I feel so disgusted about this experience that I WON'T return. I hear the owner is quite a tyrant and is extremely difficult to work for, so I guess they keep going through new chefs. They just lost one of their most loyal customers. What a tragedy. If I could give 0 stars I most certainly would.
google avatar

Jade O.

Yelp
House of China is subpar to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. It's nice that they deliver, but the food isn't amazing. There are better choices in Dubuque.
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
A few years ago when I moved to the area, the food was excellent. For the past year or so though, the quality has dropped considerably. The appetizers were obviously premade and just kept warm, the quality of the dishes have dropped, and the sauces are watered down. A lot of the food is just more tasteless and greasy. The staff is friendly, but it just doesn't make-up for the loss in quality.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Skip it. Even in Dubuque there is much better. Ordered extra spicy and NO heat. Soup had no flavor whatsoever. Fried wonton was good. In general, the sauces on all three dishes ordered where bland. Service was slow and spotty.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Dubuque. Twice cooked pork and mandarin chicken are my favorites. Best egg rolls ever!
