I’ve had mixed experiences at House of Dear. In the past, I’ve had highlights with Ashley and a cut by Teddy - both were great.
However, during a recent color consult with another stylist, the owner, Holly, offered to do a cut and style. She noticed a slight wave in my predominantly straight, fine hair and suggested a curly cut and style to enhance it. I agreed, trusting her expertise and curious to see if it would bring out more texture.
While the haircut was fine, the styling was not suited to my hair type at all. My hair was heavily saturated with curl products, then scrunched and diffused, leaving it limp, wet-looking, and greasy. Almost no curl or wave developed, and the result was a style I would never feel comfortable leaving the house in - let alone paying over $200 for.
I wasn’t upset about the style not working out because I did agree to try it. But, I was deeply uncomfortable with how I was treated after. I told Holly the style didn’t work for my hair and that I’d prefer to blow dry in the future. Another stylist even agreed. Holly dismissed my concerns, claiming my hair was damaged from straightening and that’s why the texture didn’t form. This just isn’t true - I never straighten my hair and rarely even blow dry it. It just dries very straight. I feel like the natural texture of my hair was made clear, as I had came in with it air dried. I explained this, and still I felt ignored and invalidated. I honestly felt like I was being gaslit rather than just admitting to making a mistake with the styling reccomendation for my hair. Holly later went on to say not to “bullshit her” which was extremely unprofessional, uncomfortable and again just made me feel like I was not being heard at all.
I left the salon with hair that looked greasy and wet - nothing like what I expected - and felt humiliated, frustrated and on the verge of tears. I also went home to find out the cut was uneven and choppy with different lengths on each side.
Based on this experience, I would strongly caution anyone considering booking at this salon. I have never written a negative review in my life but I truly had such an upsetting, frustrating experience and I wouldn’t want anyone else to pay the amount of money I did to then feel as horrible as I felt.
EDIT*** As mentioned above, I almost never blow dry and never straighten or use heat on my hair….. It is air dried in its natural state every day
