A short drive west of downtown, this family‑owned fixture anchors Grand Ledge’s dining scene with a wide, well‑priced Chinese menu. Recognized in City Pulse’s Top of the Town lists, it’s worth the detour for pepper steak, dumplings, and hot tea.

This is our go-to restaurant. The food and service are excellent. The menue is huge and the prices are very good. We love the egg drop soup, sizzling rice soup, and egg rolls. Favorite dish is the sweet and sour chicken as they add pineapple and green peppers. Also, the birds nest (vegetables), beef and broccoli, ginger chicken, and general hso dishes. Some of the dishes are marked hot, but I have not had a spicy dish. If you want something real spicy, I would ask for more seasoning. The restaurant is dark and relaxing.

Google
I ordered the orange steak strip. There was no meat in the heavy breaded dumplings or whatever they call it. I asked to send it back, and she refused to take it back. She made me pay $19 For that slop, I asked her to show me the steak in my in that dish. her understanding of English Suddenly, it became very poor, stay away from this place. No meat, just dough see pic.

Google
Take out was easy and efficient. Staff very kind and helpful. The food was delicious! Hot. Huge portions. Exactly what I wanted. Veggies very fresh and cooked perfectly. Sauce is good and not too much. Definitely will return.

Google
The food and service were both amazing. I wish they were playing a little music in the background or even had a TV because it felt like I had to whisper. But I will absolutely go here again. Great for takeout too!

Google
Atmosphere felt okay, smelled like an old house. Service was great. Order of pan-fried noodles tasted like they strained noodles and threw them back in a hot pot.. burned on the bottom, soggy on the top. The veggies tasted/looked like they were from a variety bag of Great Value frozen vegetables. Most of all, it was heavily salted, high in sodium even for Eastern food. I was sweating after eating my dish because of how much salt was in it. Girlfriend ordered Lo mein noodles - seemed more like they threw soy sauce in a pot of $0.99 Ramen. Go to the place down the road. I spent $70 at this place and got nothing but a stomachache and the salt sweats.

Google
If I could give this place a zero I would. Severely lacking customer service. Food came drenched with grease like it came out of a deep fryer and never drained off. Save your money cause that's 20$ wasted. Can't even eat that garbage. Way better option for a cheaper price.

Google
This is honestly one of the best I’ve had. Real pieces of good white meat chicken. In a light batter. Everything was very good spring rolls are perfect. And crab raggons and very good

Google
The food was fantastic. The hot sour soup was exactly what I was hoping for after 17 years away from Grand Ledge. The pot stickers were not over cooked, the egg roll was filled fully, and the spring rolls were proper ones. The flavours of sweet, sour, spicy, tangy, heat & savoury, fulfilled everything I wanted in a Chinese restroom. The place exceeded my expectations.

Yelp
We called in an order for pickup. They new who I was from previous business. We jumped in the car for a 12 minute drive and our order was packaged and waiting at checkout. We ordered sweet and sour shrimp and chicken, with egg roll, fried rice and soup. The best Chinese food ever! Delicious. Plenty of food and reasonably priced. It's been a while since we ate there and will not hesitate to order future Chinese from House of Hsu.

Yelp
I've been going to House of Hsu for well over two decades. The only thing I can complain about is the ambience. It smells a bit...they probably have the same exact flooring/carpet from the first time I stepped foot in that restaurant. Other than that, the food is great and the staff are very attentive. Today, we ordered Hong Kong Steak and Szechuan Shrimp. Both were very good.

MaryAnn M.

Yelp
Got the fried rice. Upcharge of $1.95. It tasted old and was warm. I dont recommend that at all. Seems like they are going downhill....fast. To bad, it was my favorite Need to find a good one.

Yelp
A Grand Ledge Michigan staple. Lots of family memories made here. Food is consistently delicious and generous portions are served. Our family loves this place.

J S.

Yelp
Best Chineese food I've had in the area. A little pricey but quality is great. Check them out.

Jenna L.

Yelp
Food was great and the lunch portion was huge. Reasonably priced and the service was prompt too!

Yelp
Decent American Chinese. They use spaghetti unfortunately for their lo mejn, and it's overcooked always. The spaghetti always to soft

Yelp
Very good service and environment dining in. We enjoyed soup and some entrees that all came out in a timely manner.

Yelp
I love this place! It's been my family's go-to Chinese restaurant for over twenty years! The lunch specials, take out selections, and cocktails shouldn't be missed. The egg rolls are excellent! The washrooms are simple and clean, and the staff are always friendly and attentive. This place gets slammed around the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve, so plan early to avoid disappointment.
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
I like the ambiance in the dining room. Pretty decent American/Chinese food. Fast food.
google avatar

Sandy S.

Yelp
We got takeout over a holiday and ended up waiting 2 hours for our meal. The meal was decent! We thought the sauces were thin but that's not a dealbreaker for me. The pork and broccoli was just OK. I liked the egg drop soup! I'm a veggies fan. I also liked the shrimp and snow peas. The steamed tofu and veggies came out sour - I'm not sure how that happens! Overall I'd go back, but it was just ok overall. I'd like to try more regional cuisine that they offer.
google avatar

Alyce M.

Yelp
They have been around forever, and have the nicest staff and most delicious sizzling rice soup.

Yelp
Not impressed with the 10 people crammed in the tiny waiting area for pickup. Seemed like a perfect place to pick up the coronavirus. Price-wise: $40 got an order of beef with broccoli, pepper steak, fried rice, 2 egg rolls, and egg drop soup. No "dinner" option, so the rice and egg rolls had to be bought separately rather than a combo. Taste-wise: bland. The egg drop soup tasted weakly of... cabbage? Also, it looked disgusting. I almost didn't even eat it because it looked so unappetizing. The fried rice was bland, we added soy sauce just to have some flavor. The beef in both our dishes was good, but nothing to write home about. The egg rolls however were phenomenal. Too bad the rest of the food wasn't like them! I would only go back here if my #1 Chinese spot is closed.

Diana E.

Yelp
The food was excellent! Really could not have been any better! I had sesame chicken with lo mein. The tempura was perfect and the flavor of the noodles had just a little black pepper that was so perfect with the teriyaki sauce. My friend loved tgeirs as well. Service was great and we enjoyed alcoholic beverages too...beverage mix questionable so simple drinks best. So impressed...

Yelp
After proposing to my girlfriend of 4 years where did we go to celebrate? A fancy steakhouse? Big boy? Hell no, it had to be house of Hsu! We were treated to the finest meal we had on this trip. And my soon-to-be-wife spent the last of our money on the little knick-knacks in the front. It was so good in fact, it saved our eventual marriage.

Zandra T.

Yelp
My 1 star is being very generous. The service was horrible and it is one and done for me. I will never go back there and definitely will not refer any one I know to that place. My food was cold and the host was rude.

Bob S.

Yelp
The service was good, the food not so much. 2 of us got steak dishes & meat was too tough to eat. Moo Goo Gai Pan, a chicken dish with the same sauce as the beef, was unremarkable, also uneaten. The fried rice was decent & we shared. No doggie bags required. Our usual Chinese Restaurant in Lansing was closed for vacation & we are making Chow Mein for lunch at home tomorrow. We won't be back.

Amy P.

Yelp
I'm giving this review three stars, the service is great, however the last time we went there ( this is my second time ever to set foot in this restaurant... our take home food had black hair in it. Gross. I could not eat it, which is sad because you are paying good money to enjoy a supposedly delicious meal. Will I go back? Not sure. The soup rocks but if the cooks aren't wearing hair nets probably not! Disappointed
google avatar

Steven J.

Yelp
Someone needs to update to $, esp for lunch. Nice lighting. Warm. Nice furniture. No buffet which is nice for a change. Mee fun was dark not white like I like, hence only 4 stars.
google avatar

Dayanara R.

Yelp
Potsticker shells were oddly thick today. I'd mark off a half star, but being Christmas Eve (and knowing that is their busiest night of the year), it's not worth it. Meanwhile, I had beef lo mein (with princess sauce--the best way!) for the first time in a long time, and the beef was more tender than it's ever been. I don't know what they're doing differently, but they should keep doing it!

Joseph M.

Yelp
Do NOT waste your time on this place. The woman behind the counter was the RUDEST person i have ever seen in my life. She was rude to me and to the customer ahead of me. When i told her she didn't need to rude her response was " i am not rude, just take your food and leave". I personally have never experience such horrible customer service. NEVER going back
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Pretty good spot! I went in on a night where we were the only folks in there. Service was good but some of the food was not as flavorful. Will be back to try them again.
google avatar

Kyle T.

Yelp
I'm hoping it was just a bad day for this restaurant, but stopped today and the sweet and sour sauce had a terrible taste, almost chemical like. Still not sure if it was something that maybe went rancid or something else.
google avatar

Sarahi C.

Yelp
Love this place!!! I have been coming here for over 20 years!! My favorite is their princess shrimp plate. Their egg rolls are good!
google avatar

Joshua N.

Yelp
Only did take out because that's where the state is right now. But I really enjoyed the food was tasty lot more flavor than typical Chinese around here. Also the menu had so many options which is fantastic. A little bit overwhelming but who doesn't like choices. I had the hot and sour soup very different than the typical but good delicious. Everything as well spiced portions are fair and the staff was friendly. In terms of Chinese in the greater Lansing area this was very good and different but good different
google avatar

Yelp
Totally earns 5 stars. The staff is great. The food is excellent. And the little old lady makes the best Mai Tais in the state of Michigan.
google avatar

Brandy R.

Yelp
Every time I have come here, the food has been hot, delicious, and of better quality than most Asian restaurants. I've had the orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and most recently chicken with broccoli. All amazing! My favorite item is the coconut cream cheese filled ragoons. Amazing!!
google avatar

Yelp
If you want the best Chinese food in the area, look no further than House of Hsu. Seriously, this place serves up the best dishes, regardless of what you choose - chicken, beef, shrimp, etc. Our family absolutely enjoys their creations. Dine in or Take Out, they serve it up hot, fresh, and with a smile.

E. C.

Yelp
This place is filthy, so dark because they're probably hiding something. The cashier was rude. She wanted me to cancel my original take out order from my credit card and start over because she forgot to add 50 cents to cover the new added Covid price. WHAT A DUMP.
google avatar

Bryan A.

Yelp
Everything including pot stickers way over battered and fried. Super sweet people and service but food is mediocre u less you like their batter. $3.75 for something that is mostly all batter and cheap beef makes sense. Cheap prices now makes sense.
google avatar

Harold F.

Yelp
Usually this place is on top of things but today 4/21/20 I ordered for takeout and the lady told me half an hour. I get there 30 minutes later and waited 10-15 minutes! Furthermore they forgot my rice that was supposed to come with the beef and broccoli. I understand that there's a pandemic but if you wanna continued support of your local business get more organized!

Amber S.

Yelp
We ordered a few different menu items. While we didn't mind the food, it seemed flavorless. I was there several years ago and felt the same way. I won't be returning.

Jaye B.

Yelp
I've eaten this food for 30+ years and it has gone seriously downhill. Tonight we ordered 2 old favorites for take-out...Mongolian beef and moo shu pork. Well, that's what we ordered, it's not what we got. Mongolian beef is a simple dish....thinly sliced velveted beef with spring onions in a spicy, slightly sweet sauce over crispy noodles. What we got was some beef with sliced white onions and those nasty little corn abortions in a bland and greasy brown....gravy of some sort. No sweet. No heat. No flavor. Yuck. The moo shu was better, but moo shu pork needs Chinese pancakes. Very thin, tender sesame oil flavored pancakes with plum sauce or, in a pinch, hoisin sauce. I ordered extra pancakes. I got doughy bland chewy grocery store flour burrito-sized Mexican tortillas. Cold, as in uncooked. Really? REALLY? Makes me think that the Mongolian beef came out of a can labeled La Choy. We also ordered steamed dumplings, which I'm sure were not house made, but frozen. And egg rolls, which were left out of the order. Sigh. When a (formerly) good Chinese restaurant cuts corners by using Mexican tortillas instead of fresh paper-thin pancakes....well, it's just disappointing. I'm getting tired of my own cooking but I'm going to make some proper Chinese pancakes tomorrow to eat the rest of my not-too-bad moo shu. We threw out the Mongolian beef.

Yelp
Staff is pretty friendly, but not trained in customer service. I had trouble reading the menu because it is so dark AND because the colors they use in the menu (especially the pages towards the back) do not have enough contrast with the background colors. Hard to read. I mentioned to the staff that it was too dark to read the menu. They smiled and told me that's the way it was. I asked if something could be done to make it better in the future. They laughed and said their was nothing they could do. I mentioned it later to the manager and she laughed as well and blew me off. Eventually said she would talk to her boss. I doubt anything will be done. I asked if we could have some spoons at our table. Staff sad you already have one spoon. I said I would like more (so everyone could have one at our table). She asked how many. I guess they don't know how to count. Waitress passed extremely hot food right in front of us reaching in front of people faces, and obviously hasn't been trained to walk around the table instead of putting your arm/arm pit in front of customers face. Also, booths are very old and constructed in a way that it is difficult for people (especially the elderly) to get in and out of. No kids menu. $70+ for Sunday afternoon meal for party of 3 adults and 2 kids. Food was ok, but none of the meals come with soup. There wasn't even Wanton soup on the menu. After delivering our food to the table the waitress didn't even ask if there was anything else we needed. She just walked away. Disappointed.

Yelp
Thought I'd try an old favorite while in Grand Ledge today. Haven't been to House of Hsu (formerly Charlie Wong's) for many years. The quiet was a little weird, I remember last time there was Chinese music in the background. The lighting is still a little dim but better than it was. The service was faster than I remember, and my favorite dish, Mongolian Beef, was just as good as it always has been. Love the fried wontons that come with the combo, if you choose, instead of the typical eggroll. My entire lunch, which filled me to the gills, was only $7.53 with a beverage and free refill. The service was quick and pleasant. I will certainly return again and again!
google avatar

Yelp
Also known as the LOCATION by dan-ity kel. This secret spot offers comfy booths, friendly staff, killer drink speshes, and amazing food. It won't break the bank either Just don't tell the "undesirables" about it.

Yelp
Overall, we liked this place. It was busy for a Sunday night, so they placed us in the back room. Which we ended up having all to ourselves, which is probably a good thing because we're pretty loud. Our server was an older lady who had some spunk. Our family of five started out with the Family of Four appetizer for $20. It was so much food, we didn't even need to order dinner, but of course we did anyway. We all shared the usual "We are Americans so we must order the General Gso's chicken" platter and the Orange chicken. They looked exactly the same except one platter had one slice of orange on it to differentiate between the two dishes. I thought the General Tso's Chicken could use a little extra kick, but since I have a picky 10 year old, it was just fine. This meal is what you would expect from any typical Chinese restaurant. It has the typical gaudy decor, dark lighting, old chairs and a bar that looked like a bar you would see in the background of an episode of Dallas or Falcon Crest from the early 80s. It was just perfect.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Was finally able to make it out and do a carry out order due to the pandemic. I went to pay with a $50 gift card that I received from a family member. Unfortunately, they would not take the gift card due to it being expired only two days ago....2 DAYS...in the midst of a pandemic. I asked if they could work with me and they said no...rules are rules. Like, are you serious? You are a small restaurant, we are trying to give you our business by staying local...you can't currently dine in and nobody was there. She not only grabbed the food and gift card, but she ran to the back and never came back out. WTH? We have always supported House of Hsu...always. This was so disappointing that we are never going back again. We encourage you to do the same...I'm not sure if it was just this particular girl today or just their customer service, but beyond disappointed.

Sue B.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the food. Have not been there since the lockdown but they left portions of our dinner out. We got no Rice or egg roll they were supposed to come with the meal. Got it earlier in the day and took it home to put it in the fridge for supper. Realized part of dinner was missing and called the restaurant. She said they come with the dinner ( which we knew) but took several moments to convince her . She then said next time maybe she would give us more. Don't know how because she never bothered to take my name. I think this was our last visit to this establishment. The food we did get was mediocre at best . .Not to mention the increase in prices . All I can say was disappointing.
google avatar

Brooke C.

Yelp
This place has never disappointed me! They do a lot of take out business and it's ready & piping hot in 10 minutes! They have lots of vegetarian choices. The vegetable egg foo yong is my new fave, but the vegetable bean curd is tops too. The hot & sour soup can be made without the meat and the egg drop soup is the best I've had at any Chinese restaurant. Get this: it includes vegetables and is not just some hot gelatinous-like mass mixed with eggs in a bowl.
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
I've been eating at House of Hsu for as long as I can remember and 85% of the time the food has been consistently on point. Occasionally our take out orders get messed up or I find the sweet and sour shrimp is totally lacking veggies. The service, however, is always consistently bad and unfriendly. I've also experienced unnecessarily long waits for food after ordering. The atmosphere is straight out if the 70s which in a way is totally endearing. They still have Christmas light up in July. Overall, it's a good choice for Asian food on the west side of Lansing, as long as you hit them on a good night.
google avatar

Lakin S.

Yelp
Easily the best Chinese restaurant in the area. I've been coming to this restaurant for so long that the waitresses know and talk to my kids every time we come in- which I love! I've never had a bad meal here. The sweet and sour chicken, egg drop soup, and egg rolls are so good!
google avatar

Gavin B.

Yelp
Dropped in for lunch on Sunday with the family. A nice restaurant that looks better inside than out. Had the Sizzling Rice soup which was okay, although the broth was a little bland. The Curry Chicken, however, was very nice indeed and the portion was generous. One complaint, and it's one that I have for several Chinese restaurants, is that there's no kids menu and no desire to offer smaller portions, which leaves us with the rather bizarre scene of a 5 year old being overwhelmed by an adult plate of chicken lo mein. That said, she ate half of it. Overall, decent quality, belly filling portions at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
I ordered the General Tso chicken, Chicken Lo-Mein, and 2 egg rolls. The chicken Lo-Mein was so plain and un-seasoned. It had NO sauce, NO seasoning, NO flavor Just noodles, chicken and vegetables. The General Tso Chicken came cold and un-sauced. They gave me a side of Sauce to put on the chicken. The Sauce didn't taste like General Tso sauce which I've had at 100's of other high quality American Chinese restaurants. It tastes like a store bought jar of Mu-Shu sauce and had WAY TOO MUCH GINGER. The Sauce was so overpowering with ginger I could barely taste the chicken. The egg rolls were both very greasy and very soggy. The food in general was horrible and to top it all Off the prices are insane! All that crap costs me about $25 for the smallest sizes for each order. When I asked for a refund, they told Me and my husband never to come back here again. It was pretty upsetting. I've been to tons of American Chinese restaurants, and I've seen this type of food made and served many different ways, but this was just ridiculous. No flavor, I had to sauce the chicken myself, and the egg rolls soggy. And then the insanely high prices for that junk.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I've been going here on and off since high school. The food is consistently good and the staff, especially those working the front desks for pick up orders, are consistently unfriendly.
google avatar

Ann H.

Yelp
House of Hsu's sizzling rice soup is the best thing I've ever had in my mouth. I wanted to put my face in the bowl and absorb every molecule of this delicious experience. The broccoli chicken was very good, the service was very good (our server offered to fill my diet soft drink). Definitely earned a permanent spot on my go-to list!
google avatar

Bruce E.

Yelp
Let me prerequisite this review by saying it has been extremely difficult to find food beyond a simple burger in this town. So when I was told that HSU was a very enjoyable atmosphere and experience I hop to it. Unfortunately I am sitting here feeling lied to. The server and the hostess both had horrible attitudes. The good as far as we can tell isn't amazing. In fact I'd say Fortune House is a much better restaurant than this. Just a table over a customer muttered to their group this place used to be better. I don't think I will return at this point and I won't recommend this place to anyone else.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
NOT good. The only thing that was semi-decent were the egg rolls and they were mediocre at best.
