12 Places to Find Flavor-Packed African Cuisines in Los Angeles

"It’s rare to find Egyptian street snacks in Los Angeles, and rarer still to find the food hiding inside a San Fernando Valley garage. But that’s exactly where the Original Hawowshi shines, selling underground griddled bread and other delights by direct message or at pop-ups all over the city. For a unique taste of Cairo culture, there’s nothing like these layered, hand-tossed snacks." - Fiona Chandra, Eater Staff

Isfahani Biryani and Daisy were amazing! Memorable place. Friendly, attentive, and professional throughout. Excellent service that made our dining experience even better!

Deez Weez

Google
Best Kabob in town! Wow. I live 40 minutes away but so worth the drive. I recommend!

Amin D

Google
Very low quality food. Very expensive! Owner was extremely rude. No service at all! Beryan wasn't cooked and didn't serve as it should. It was like a kotlet in an oily bread! Shameful!

Ben Kaviani

Google
Looks good, Taste not at all. Authentic environment but definitely there better Persian restaurants out there, I was very hungry so didn't check the reviews.

D Dlan

Google
This is absolutely one of the must-sees of Los Angeles. It's like a time travel to mid-century Iran. With all the original ornaments and decorations, it looks like a museum. They have a large variety of persian cuisine. Food quality is high. Though sometimes surprisingly overpriced. Cons: The owner likes to share and advocate her political views to customers, which is not the best choice for a food service business.

Ali M

Google
Very friendly owner! We went there for Persian New Year to say Happy New Year. He brought us special tea with rock candy as EIDI. That was a memorable moment for us. I definitely recommend their Beryani!

Google
I have been eating here for 25 years. Great food. Great guy. Cool ambiance. Always hot and Fresh off the grill with a Smile Thank You for being here.

Richmond Paul Ruiz

Google
I orderer their Soltani beef it was delicious. It'll take some time (10-15 minutes) to get your order since it will be cooked/ grilled after you order which is nice since it'll be freshly cooked hot when served. They dont serve fountain soda, all are canned (Coca Cola products) at $2 each tax inclusive. The owner is a one-man team. He's cook, server and cashier. So I'm not sure if curb-side pickup will be on-time. Authentic Persian items embellishes the whole restaurant which gives it the unique ambiance while eating. A lot of photos of owner with some prominent people (speculating) adorns the tables and picture frames around the place. Parking is shared with other businesses in the establishment, it may be hard to find a parking spot. Must try: beef and chicken kubideh

Yelp
very good biryani and its worth it i dont know why u people hate this kabob place if u dont like this place order from somewhere else that they dont even wash their hands and his a nice guy stop being a hater

Yelp
This place is very authentic when it comes to the food and setting inside. Lots of traditional decorations. The service was not really there, and the prices for all the meals were pretty pricey. It looked like a mom and pop shop, so I gave it a try to support small businesses. The food itself smelled amazing! After a couple of bites in, it kind of lost its taste and was a little dry. The meal can serve two people, but there would not be much meat for two people.

Yelp
I went here about 10 years ago and the dish was poor and expensive that time. The owner guy is pretty rude. Do not waste your money on this place. It is not a restaurant and it looks like a storage of old stuff! My friend is from Isfahan and one time he was there and he said to owner that he knows beryani and want to open a beryani and this guy told him that he registered beryani in US for himself It should not be false because his communication with his customers is pretty poor so it is normal for this type of character to lie like drinking water

Yelp
The best Persian restaurant in the neighborhood. Always fresh and tasty, the chicken is so juicy, even the next day you eat it's still tender. No long wait for the order, pretty quick and great service. I love the decor and design of the store.

Azad K.

Yelp
Stay away from this spot. Ordered chicken breast and ground beef kabobs plate. Asked for a small side of hummus. The chicken was under cooked. The beef had a horrible flavor and the rice tasted bad too. Instead of a small side of hummus I got a whole serving which he charged me $8 for. I ended up not even eating my food because it was so disgusting. My total bill was $38. What a rip off. I told the owner about the quality of the food and he told me then why did you come eat here. He was very rude and didn't even offer to give me a discount for food I didn't even eat

Bita G.

Yelp
Food is always great , beautiful decorations If you are looking for authentic Persian food this is the place to go
google avatar

Goril M.

Yelp
Top Persian kebab in town :} It's the best environment to have lunch in Valley area

Cyrus F.

Yelp
Rude owner. Cheats in your bill. Average food. Insults you for entering his restaurant

Ramtin S.

Yelp
The decor evokes memories of old Iran, adorned with pictures of famous Persian celebrities. However, my experience with their signature dish, "Beryoon," left much to be desired. Originating from Isfahan and traditionally made with lamb meat, the version served here was disappointingly dry, possibly due to the incorporation of stale breadcrumbs instead of quality meat. Additionally, the owner's attitude lacked the expected hospitality. My recommendation: Save your money and explore other dining options.
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
The worse place in the valley, I tried to go in and get an order of rice and while I was looking at a full pot of rice I was told no more rice orders. Would love to come back since it's so close to my house but I'll pass. Seek other locations because you may not be able to order here
google avatar

Wayne G.

Yelp
went in to sit down and deciding on what to eat. when the cook was very pushy and rushing us to order. it wasn't busy at all so we ended up walking out. very Rude

Amir D.

Yelp
The food was amazing!! Highly recommend ! We got a mixture of each type of kabob and it did not disappoint! Cannot wait to go back to LA even just for this.
google avatar

Patty G.

Yelp
I really loved the food here! Made fresh to order and everything tasted so fresh and delicious. The owner is a very sweet guy and he's very helpful if you can't make up your mind what to eat. Inside it's so beautiful there are many collected decorations from Iran it looks so mesmerizing all of the different lanterns and cool bowls that have been collected over the years. The food is fantastic and I have been here many times. Absolutely love this restaurant
google avatar

Anoush K.

Yelp
This is a small restaurant kind of a hole in the wall place. Most of the time, the owner was busy talking on the phone to somebody from his home country, Iran. He did take a minute to take my order. The place is full of knicknacks and decorative items all over the walls. There's so many decorative items on the walls that overkill does not begin to cover it.It is hard to say where one thing starts and another thing ends. I ordered the Sultani, and although the food was OK, it was way overpriced. One Sultani and one small bottle of Coke cost $40 dollars. This is one place I'm not going back to. It's just not worth it.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
Guy is a con man.pay attention how to sign your receipts.I didnt pay attention he put for himself 50$tip. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN U sign receipt.I thought I was only one went through revies waw this guy is a con.man I NOTICED SO MANY 1 STARS BUT has 3.5 star overall.guy is also very arrogant and very pompous and angry.I WOULD STAY AWAY.food was average for sure.
google avatar

Soraya B.

Yelp
Authentic Persian cuisine. Great service and delicious food. Looks like a museum with all the amazing pieces of history and art from Iran. Which I had taken a picture of what we ordered, but we were all so excited and attached the food. Abghoosht and Kaleh Pacheh with yogurt mint drink
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Great vibe nice place clean restroom a must see and eat in , very nice staff and food

Mahdi T.

Yelp
You have to order onion for kabab and pay for it separately.! But keep your eyes open to make sure that you eat kabab, because it doesn't taste or smell it.! I wish I had taken sumac with me because it didn't taste sumac either.! The price seemed to be Raffi, but they serve a very low quality stuff instead. His agitated rude behavior doesn't need to be reminded; so it was the first and last time ever.
google avatar

Delbar K.

Yelp
I can't wait to go back to this place. very good place with a wonderful owner. We will see you soon Agha Mehdi!

Elmira B.

Yelp
Beautifully designed restaurant with Persian arts. Great food and nice vibe. The service was fast and friendly. We would come to this place again for sure! Try Briani and Dizzi, if you are into trying new cuisine, even though they are a bit pricy, particularly Dizzi. Also order a glass of tea with sugar cane to complete a nice meal.

Mahdi Z.

Yelp
Very poor customer service; the owner acts as if he owns Facebook. The moment I walked in, he started giving me attitude and was on the phone the entire time while taking my order.

Hadi D.

Yelp
Isfahan-Nesfe-Jahan means that half of the world's wonders can be found in Isfahan. I love Isfahan and miss the food and sensory stimulation of that ancient city. How can this small restaurant evoke so many lovely memories in the delicious and authentic meals they serve and the eclectic ambience? This has been my most rewarding experience of eating authentic Persian cuisine in the half century since enjoying Isfahan's wonders firsthand. Highly recommended for the true connoisseur of authentic international cuisine.

Marco M.

Yelp
This place is amazing. It's almost as if you have to be accepted by this man to enjoy a piece from his menu haha. He always looks pissed off, but I think that's just his daily face. The decoration inside is fun to look at and has photos of him and his friends under the glass above the table. The chicken is juicy, the koobideh is very flavorful. Make sure you get a side of the humus.

Rosana K.

Yelp
servuce was terrible, didn't get asked anything didn't get help with anything. prices were high for the crappy food, and worse service. We asked why the price was so high and he screamed at us telling us to go across the street and eat something else. the guy didn't even greet us he asked us what we want and that was it. i went to the front and asked for straws and when he came to give it to me he threw them at me, made eye contact and walked away. dont come here unless u want crappy everything.

Rico M.

Yelp
I don't understand why there are comments about the owner being rude, the owner is a very nice guy and the food is amazing 10/10 kabobs. I will be sure to come back Great restaurant design
google avatar

Alexander E.

Yelp
The food is good in my opinion, but the owner is an Asshole! Sorry, I meant to say the Asshole of all Assholes. He really makes you feel unwelcomed and appears annoyed when you enter his restaurant. My friend and I were eating here and the owner was talking shit about us to a person who appeared to be a regular or his friend. Luckily my friend looks Hispanic but she's really Persian. The owner was saying not so nice things about us in Farsi.

Omar M.

Yelp
Worst restaurant ever! Walked in and felt very uncomfortable. These guys are very racist and homophobic. As I walked in, they were very rude and did not even try to take my order and 20m later they finally decided to show up and asked me what I want instead of apologizing for the poor service they offer. After taking my order down, they took another hour to make it and I thought it was fresh but I was wrong, they just warm the food up and serve it to you. I do not recommend and plz don't waste your money and time here!
google avatar

Arsalan T.

Yelp
This place is amazing more like museum a lot of history is in this place all single wall it was pretty amazing also owner is funny guy I like him food was ok not like wow but was ok you know but you should check this out place especially persian people.

Gevork V.

Yelp
Don't even think about trying it! This guy have forgot how he was when he used to be an Iranian!!!! Iranians are nice and welcoming. This guy is getting angry when customer enters. I can't understand if he can't bear people why dd he opened this place??? Maybe he had a good attitude but surely it was long ago... Anyway the food is not that much excellent to worth bad attitude you will took while staying there...

sina s.

Yelp
This is one of the best Persian restaurants in town. Everything on the menu is delicious and Mr. Mehdi provides the utmost customer service. I'm not sure why people have rated the customer service so low. I've had nothing but positive experiences here. This is the only place in the USA that offers a traditional Persian dish from the city of Isfahan called "Beryoon". It is served perfectly here with fresh herbs on the side. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a delicious dining experience.
google avatar

Sonia Alisa J.

Yelp
I love this place, I got the authentic ab goosht it's a stew soup that is to die for. They separate the liquid from the meat and potatoes. You add bread to the liquid and let it soak then devour! You then smash the meat, potatoes and pea and eat with bread. I come here often and it never disappoints ! They should e fresh kabab which they make right in front of you. The decor is so awesome makes you feel like you're back in Iran!!! Try this place and let me know how to like it.
google avatar

Big D.

Yelp
Business owner was very rude and walked away from me while I'm trying to order something. Definitely do not come to this business I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemies, I also heard that they have cockroaches in the kitchen. Please go somewhere else this is a waste of your time and money.
google avatar

Azar A.

Yelp
today i went there after years and asked for Abghoost he charged me $37 dollars and of course i paid tax as well but that price for that much foor was just outrageous and i don't think i will go there again !!!!!!!

Sam D.

Yelp
The owner is terrible. I walked into the restaurant and the owner kicked me out and said he didn't want to serve me. Another time, I walked in and he had people in the store but he still told me he had no food. Very rude, bad attitude and not a good businessman.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall in an nondescript still mall. The inside transports you to a homelike atmosphere with amazing Persian cuisine. We took the beef soltani and the chicken with bone plate. I was so delighted to see they have sangak my absolute favorite bread. I will be back to try the briyani.

Sophia P.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE FOOD AND SERVICE. I got the ground chicken plate, and it was completely inedible. The owner was extremely rude and I got a bad vibe immediately walking in. Waste of time and money. Don't come here..

Ola L.

Yelp
I should have looked at the reviews first before heading to this establishment. Went there and the guy running the place ignored us. He knew we were there but ignored us. Didn't say a thing. We were standing in front of him!!!! We left because he would not serve us and we waited for at least 10 minutes. The place was not busy. One guy was seated and eating his meal in the corner. A couple was sitting at another table and they were just probably waiting for their order. So there was no line for the order. We all left and I made a big comment saying why is he ignoring us? Went home and read the reviews and realized we were not the kind of people he likes to serve. Our skin color is different. I wish there is a rating of no stars.

Anonymous R.

Yelp
Rude staff dismissed me as soon as I entered the restaurant. Told me I need to pay $10 for coke & wouldn't even speak to my face. Said cash only when the card reader was right on the table... read the other reviews & avoid this place at all costs.
google avatar

Richie S.

Yelp
I just tried ordering and I informed the person it's my first time ordering here. He was rude and said you can't order on the phone and hang up. I am trying to social distance and order remotely and get an understanding of what they are selling. Go somewhere else if you don't want rude service. Also, on their website, the Sultani Kabab Halal gives you a choice of 3 Kabab's. Screen shot attached. On the phone, he said only 2 and it's a fixed kabab. And even that, I said okay and I was going to order another one and that's when he hang up the phone.
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
Came in for a number #11 boneless chicken kabob $14.62 so I asked for one extra boneless kabob not the full order just the chicken so the lady charge me another order #11 the total came out to be 29$ this is insane first and last time I come to this place . Almost 15$ for a extra kabob other places charge 7$ or 8$ max .
google avatar

Ara G.

Yelp
The owner is unfriendly and rude. The food is just okay. Parking is usually a problem. Not a place I would like to return to.

setareh p.

Yelp
The food is authentic and good. People seem so needy these days. This is a small restaurant with the owner running everything. You can't expect to get the type of service that you may get from big chain restaurants even though you don't even get that these days from those places. If you want good food, then this is the place. If you want something fancy and tasteless, then try other places.
google avatar

Allen E.

Yelp
This restaurant shouldn't even exist. Beside their horrific customer service and disgusting food, the food taste horrible and is beyond disgusting. The owner has such a bad attitude and the worst customer service ever. The restaurant itself is not clean and has very poor condition and I highly recommend to stay away from this place.
google avatar

ShakaZulu S.

Yelp
The Kabob version of the soup nazi. Endearing charm in the decor, food quality not great, I suspect microwaving going on and also very expensive. Charged $20 for simple kabob lunch no clear prices anywhere. Took forever, didn't even offer water. Dear yelp, Iranian people are known for their hospitality, this guy doesn't rep all of us. Truly good persian food can only be found in someone's home.

Brad R.

Yelp
Have been ordering here for years , the owner takes pride in the quality of his food and sources high quality meats and ingredients. I am glad the owner is there still running the place, many restaurants go downhill when an owner lets someone else fill in for them. Not this place, he is there making sure your meal comes out perfect every time. They have the best kebabs , now go there and try it.

Bebe M.

Yelp
Make sure to check you account they charge more then they say. I got a receipt for a $23 purchase and my account was charged $28 and owner claims it's the banks fault plus's their beef kabob has gone to shit!!
google avatar

MIke J.

Yelp
I had the chicken kabob plate for lunch. It was delicious and the portions were very large.

Kash A.

Yelp
Is the worst bad taste Biryani I!!!! and foods with a very low class personality and stupid owner, charged our group double.
google avatar

Mahshid N.

Yelp
Thank you so much for a great service and excellent foodall the Persian decorations back us to all good memory from Iranhighly recommend
