On the Grid : House of Meatballs

"Did someone say meatballs? This cute and modern establishment is a fresh take on traditional Italian eatery. The menu offers choosing your own "balls" which means the type of meatball, sauce, and pasta that you'd like your custom Italian meal to be. They also serve sliders, salads, wings, and more - so needless to say, you've got options. It is family owned, so you do feel the history, friendly service, and that the owners truly love what they do." - Grace Duong

The main photo on google makes it look like it’s a club but this is a super delightful little pasta place. They have vegetarian eggplant balls that are SO delicious. The staff was nice and friendly. I really enjoyed my time. Hopefully my photo will get bumped to the top so people can see how charming this place is!!

Google
a cute location in Westwood! i got the spaghetti with tofu meatballs and arabiatta; the sauce tasted more like jarred marinara which was slightly disappointing, but the pasta was perfect. the tofu meatball was AMAZING! it was crispy and filled w tofu spinach and almonds. the pasta portion was generous and filling, but also expected for 24 dollars. the garlic and cheese bread was the lowest point of the meal, it seemed like it was microwave instead of baked since the cheese wasn’t properly melted/broiled and the bread wasn’t crispy. the sauce it came with was delicious, a much better tomato sauce then the pasta. the highlight of the meal was truly the rosemary focaccia: deliciously flavored and perfectly soft and crispy. the first plate was complimentary, and it was exceptionally good that i had to pay for another plate! the service was also super nice! the three star review implies that i won’t be returning, but the review is only due to the parts of the meal that were honestly disappointing. however, i definitely do want to return for more of the tofu meatballs and focaccia; perhaps next time a sandwich or a different sauce. they clearly know how to cook well, but some of the dishes need more work.

Food was so good! I got the tomato arugula salad with buratta on the side - was feeling a little carsick so didn't end up getting the meatballs unfortunately but I wish I had because all of my friend's foods looked so good. The bread and apps (we got brussels and a couple other things) were really good too! Had a mix up where my vegan friend was accidentally served a meatball but when we notified our server they got it corrected and brought out a whole new dish right away

Such a cute place in Westwood. I also love their eggplant meatballs, even though I never go for a vegan option because I need my protein.

Google
A hidden jam of Westwood Village. Meatball pasta selection is super comforting. You get to select the type of meatball, pasta, sauce and extra topping. Spaghetti is my favorite, and arrabbiata sauce is pleasantly spicy. The staffs are super friendly, especially to kids. They do have kids menu as well. Highly recommend the place.

The place was cozy, clean and well-kept. The customer service was outstanging. As first-time customers, we were thoughtfully guided to ensure we experienced their specialties to the fullest. As a result, the amount of food that we ordered was just perfect for us and we enjoyed the ideal combination of sauces and pastas they offer. Everything was very good.

Google
For the price and quality combined, this is probably the best restaurant in Westwood village for a casual dining experience. All the food is fresh and well prepared and the service is friendly and professional. I would never compare this place to a high-end Italian restaurant, but it's a great value and the food is quite tasty. I'm not a vegetarian, but really enjoyed the eggplant meatballs. The menu is varied enough to allow for lots of choices, but limited enough so they can focus on making what they do best. We came here for a pre-theater meal, + fit the bill perfectly. Not a destination dining experience, but an excellent spot for a relaxing homemade style meal.

The House of Meatballs is a long-standing Italian restaurant nestled in Westwood. Right next to UCLA, it's a destination and stop for college students and those who work in the medical field that are employed close by. The area is intimate. Not too large. The right size for a nice get-together or cozy date. Even a business meeting if you si desire. The pastas run a specific style. Choose your meatball, your sauce, and the style of noodles. It's as simple as that. The eggplant meatball is really delicious, too. The location sits right next to the whole foods market, so it's not too hard to miss. Great for lunches or to eat when you have to go to the doctor and you have to stay for a while.

Yelp
Wow. I say again, Wow! If you are a lover of Italian food of the pasta and meatball realm, here is the answer to your hankerings! Reasonably priced, perfectly cooked, seasoned, and portioned food, in a warm and friendly environment. Staff are courteous, helpful, and encouraging with what fare might be a savory experience for you. Arrive just a touch early to tap into their happy hour offerings. You won't be disappointed visiting this Italian gem just off the UCLA campus. We couldn't resist declaring "I love meatballs," buying their branded shirts as souvenirs to recall our lovely meal. Check out this establishment! You'll be glad you did!!!

Yelp
I love the build-your-own pasta, as well as the pork, beef, and eggplant meatballs! The restaurant itself is very cozy, the staff is friendly, and all of the dishes I've tried have been delicious. This is hands down the best Italian spot in Westwood.

Yelp
The food was good, shoutout to Jeanet our server. The ambiance was amazing being they dimmed the lights. It's a vibe.

Yelp
We came because of the outdoor patio with Monty (Darah's dog). Great choice - the atmosphere is really nice outside. We had the Caesar salad, Brussels sprouts and garlic bread for starters and all really good. We all had different dishes, chicken picada, meatballs, shrimp Alfredo and everything good. The pastas so delicious. Also nice service.

Yelp
A cute place to take a dinner date if you're in college. A decent place for lunch if you're older than college age. Its hard to describe, but there's a sense of like a chipotle-esque menu vibe that makes it seem more casual and quick, thus the prior reccomendation. The service was wonderful, the food was just so so. Really cute spot and I like it for its simplicity. Just know, you're getting just that when you go- simplicity.

Yelp
I recently organized a group work lunch here, and everything was going great until one of my colleagues found a metal shard in his meatball. Sadly, I won't return because of this and won't recommend this restaurant because of this. The vibes are great here and the food was decent otherwise. Servers were also good. One of the nicer places to eat in Westwood that isn't a fast casual place.

Yelp
Great selection of meatballs: Pork Beef Chicken Surprise - eggplant I enjoyed the beef and pork with spicy red sauce over pasta All three flavors of pasta, sauce and meatballs were in harmony Friendly professional service Small but Nice selection of beer and wine (glass & bottles) Overall a nice local restaurant for Westwood Village It is Westwood so parking is a chore

Yelp
Great choice for hearty, not heavy food in a relaxed and even romantic room. Feels like you could come here with family, friends, associates, or a date. We tried an app and a couple pastas and felt well taken care of and satisfied. The Fritto Misto or Calamari is a classic, of course. Happily it's prepared to order and delicious. 'Lightly battered and served with marinara' is accurate - and we really enjoyed the marinara, too. It's a good portion, perfect to share. I was very interested in trying their namesake, the Meatballs. Tried the three different meatballs: The beef, the pork, and the eggplant. The eggplant was enjoyable, akin to a falafel in texture. Moist in the middle. The pork was also good, not overpowering by any means. The beef, to me, lacked flavor. I think a combo of the beef and pork would be great. Or, if the beef simply had more seasoning, it would be a winner, too. The texture was good, just moist enough. Just not enough of a flavor. I doubled-down with my flavor exploration as the sauce I chose happened to be the Arrabiata. My companion ordered the chicken Alfredo, and loved it. I tasted it, too, and liked it. Super creamy, of course. The chicken was tender, the tagliatelle perfectly cooked. Loved our server. She was helpful and we appreciated her initiative and followthrough. Looking forward to a return visit to try some other things --- maybe Happy Hour, maybe Dessert.

Yelp
To be honest, I've always thought the name was a bit silly and didn't think there would be much there for me to eat a pescatarian, but I'm glad I gave it a try. They were super welcoming and seated us right away on a Saturday night around 7pm (though it got busier later on!). I thought the ambiance was cute and casual, though I could also see this place being more of a "romantic date night" spot for students too. Food-wise, I got the eggplant pappardelle creamy tomato (#3 on the favorite meatball and pasta combos) and really enjoyed it. It was indeed quite creamy and the eggplant "meatballs" were quite tasty. My boyfriend got the meatball sub and enjoyed his as well. Don't sleep on this place if you're nearby, even if you are a pescatarian/vegetarian!

Yelp
Really enjoyed my dinner here. Friendly and attentive service and the food was phenomenal, also loved the decor. I ordered the combo #3 (papparadelle w/ creamy tomato and burrata) and we got a caprese and truffle fries. Everything was delicious and I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
House of Meatballs is one of my absolute favorite places to grab fresh pasta in West LA! Their pasta and meatballs are so delicious. I love the option to pick out the type of pasta, meatball, and sauce for my meal. I am obsessed with their eggplant meatballs-- you can't get this anywhere else! Really cute, intimate location with great service. This is my go-to place to grab a delicious bite and catch up with friends!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Westwood Village. The service was amazing. I think her name was Jeanette (I'm sorry if I got it wrong) was so lovely and her service was top notch! We had been there before and it was just as memorable the second time. The meatball sub came with a Caesar salad both were great! The spaghetti and meatballs also very good. I'm def going to try and go more often. The prices are very fair.

Yelp
Came for a quick lunch and wasn't disappointed. Service was great, we sat outside and the service never faltered. Got the chicken parm sandwich it was so delicious. Will absolutely recommend.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about Lexi!!! She makes this place the best! My group (3 of us) showed up without a reservation on a UCLA home Basketball night. She and her team made us feel right at home, even with a full house!!! Food was excellent, service was even better! Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
This place was fantastic! Went with a group of 10 and everyone loved their food. Ambience was really nice as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Really liked the atmosphere and service. It's a cute dainty little place with a lot of character! It felt really homey which is definitely appreciated. The hostess and waiter was very attentive to our table - always refilling water and asking if we needed anything else. Now for the FOOD. Man, the cheesy garlic bread was great but honestly the pasta was average...the sauce was alright, the meatballs were great - big fan. But the pasta was so meh....it wasn't really cooked all the way through so it was a little uncomfortable to chew through. Definitely not al Dente. Would I come back? Prob not.

Yelp
It feels like eating at my aunt's house--or maybe someone's place in Italy. I honestly love how cozy and amazing this meatball spot smells. I've been here a few times, and it never disappoints. Bonus points: they have gluten-free options for health extremists like myself.

Yelp
This 4 star review is solely based on the Butternut Ravioli w/ white sauce and amaretto crumble. It was a super simple dish but HOLY COW this was SO incredibly good. The cream sauce was rich and was just enough, I love that they didn't drown the raviolis. It was a perfect portion. The magic was in the amaretto crumble. It heightened the dish to perfection. Other items that are worth mentioning: A trio meatball appetizer. You get three approximately 2.5" diameter sized morsels that you can choose a mix and match combination of beef, pork or chicken. We also ordered a whole appetizer of the eggplant meatballs. These were an amazing surprise of flavor and eggplant-y texture. In particular for me, I was thoroughly enamored with the crispy toastiness of the breadcrumb and caramelization of the eggplant. Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo made with paradise and a TON of mushrooms. Everyone enjoyed it but me. And only because I am so NOT a mushroom fan and boy, there were a slew of them. Chicken Parmesan on a bed of spaghetti. Standard breaded chicken with mozz a d red sauce. For dessert we ended with tiramisu and cannolis to share. Nothing spectacular nor bad to write about them. It was good, decent dessert. Parking in Westwood can be bad and good. Weekends seem easier than weekdays as we all found metered street parking within a few walking minutes.

Yelp
Cheesy Garlic Flatbread is a must! Great ambience, reminds me of a restaurant in little Italy. Our servers were very attentive as well. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
House of Meatballs is a gem! The prices are very reasonable, and while parking is along the street, we didn't have any issues finding a spot at night. I believe it's free parking after 8pm on weekends as well. It's a small restaurant, so we called ahead to make a reservation for our larger party, but for smaller groups, there's a bartop that's perfect if you don't mind cozying up. They also have outdoor seating, though no one was out there during our visit, most likely due to how cold it was. Our waitress was fantastic--super attentive, making sure our waters were always filled and checking in with us regularly without being overbearing. You're probably asking though, what about the meatballs?! Absolutely delicious! I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying their meatball sub. If you're in the area, this spot is a must-visit!

Yelp
Absolutely nothing to write home about. High priced, and not so tasty ariaba sauce with chicken meatball which was recommended by server. Which I would have tried a different one. Or that they had an option for one of each (smaller). And I support businesses utilizing food delivery services, but there was a driver waiting talking on speaker phone ever so loud. It was clearly disruptive, but it was the environment we had to eat in. Service time is slow. Recommend? At your own risk. Very neutral. But try something other than chicken. Return? Unlikely with so many other choices around.

Yelp
The server was very sweet the interior is decorated nicely. It looks good for parties and birthdays if someone were to rent out the whole place. The drinks were delicious and the food came out quickly. It is a small restaurant so for my friends birthday we did a reservation. The menu is a bit misleading I ordered the sliders but thought all of the ingredients were on all of them not different meats in each. Other than that I would come again especially knowing a new restaurant in Westwood.

Yelp
Pros & Cons Pros: Good atmosphere, a warm and attractive space. The food was very good, and not just the usual. The wine on tap was actually very satisfying, with a generous pour. Cons: Service, although personable, left something to be desired. I asked for some parmesan. It was delivered to me in a miniscule dish, not enough. Then I discovered there was no spoon on the table, so I had to ask for that. Then I discovered there was no pepper, so I asked for that. I hate to be made to feel like a pain, but I think all of these items should have at least been offered. -- It's also overpriced. Three meatballs was actually filling enough, but the ala carte policy, no sides, put it beyond the reasonable. -- Despite spending more time on the cons here, the pros outweighed them.

Yelp
I came here for an end-of-the-year celebration with my cohort and we had a fixed menu. For appetizers, I tried the arugula and tomato salad which was a light refreshing start to a heavy meal. The lemon parsley dressing added a great citrusy-flavor and the tomato provided a burst of flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of fried appetizers so I skipped the truffle fries and calamari to go for a slice of mushroom and truffle oil flatbread. Every slice had a handful of spinach with some mushroom scattered on but what I loved most was the cheese to bread ratio. They didn't skimp out on the cheese and the bread was so fluffy. I was sad about the entrees because the restaurant is called House of Meatballs and they didn't even serve meatballs and pasta despite it being one of the main courses! I left feeling empty because I didn't get to try their infamous item. That said, their pan roasted salmon was delicious. The outside was crispy and the inside was flaky and tender. The lemon was also a nice touch along with the broccolini. My newfound love for cheese makes this a biased opinion but the eggplant parmesan was good because of the hefty amount of cheese. It had layers of eggplant which I personally think would've been improved with some meat but I understand that it's a vegetarian dish. The one entree I found to be just alright was the cauliflower bolognese because it was so salty to the point that it made me start craving rice or bread to mellow out the flavor. Regardless, the service was amazing. Our waitress was so kind and attentive and the food was served family-style with plenty to go around for everyone. It came out in nicely timed increments so that we could enjoy every round including some cannolis to finish off the night. We sat outside in a beautiful patio area in the alley that was decorated to look like a picnic area.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for her birthday lunch. I forgot to ask her name, but the waitress was really sweet. We were in a bit of a rush so we ordered our tiramisu right after our entree came, and she accommodated us quickly. We asked her to wait 5ish minutes, and she then proceeded to bring it out at the perfect time!! Love the food, service, and how the little restaurant looks. It was so cute inside as well!

Yelp
Out to lunch with the gals and they suggested House of Meatballs. I was very pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is great for lunch and I can see going for a casual dinner and drinks too. It's nice that you can customize your meatballs and put them in a sandwich, get them ala carte, with pasta, and your choice of sauce. Marinara, meat sauce, white sauce. We had truffle fries - really good. Definitely had the truffle flavor. Fries are crispy outside, tender inside. Not over cooked and burnt. Nice amount of shaved parmesan. I had the eggplant meatballs with mushroom sauce and pappardelle pasta. The meatballs were okay. You can see the eggplant and this would be ideal if you are vegetarian but next time I will just get a meat version. The eggplant meatball was lack luster in flavor. The pappardelle and mushroom sauce though was really good. This also came with foccacia bread that was moist, warm, and very fresh. I recommend a visit here.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so good. I always go for the build your own! Both the meatballs and pasta are typically delicious. My only qualm is that they only give you half of the burrata that you have to pay extra for, but I love this place and would definitely still go back! The staff are also very sweet and it's a great place to go with friends or a more casual date :)
google avatar

Yelp
Restaurant: There are two seating areas. The front of the shop with indoor and outdoor dining and an outdoor patio in the backlot. Offering classic Italian dishes in the heart of Westwood. Food: Had ordered the chicken parm. Pasta is average, giving Olive Garden vibes (although I prefer Olive Garden). Standard pasta, would not recommend as there are better restaurants around in the area.

Len A.

Yelp
Sat at the counter, waiter came over immediately and asked what I wanted to drink. As I don't drink alcohol, I asked for hot tea. He told me what he had and gave me choice, but said it'll take a minute or two to heat up the water. I ordered chicken Alfredo and not only was it very good, but a huge portion, could not eat all of it. The waiter was extremely attentive, polite and cheerful...excellent service. The only downside was a table of 6 or so UCLA students, although having fun, we're very loud. Glad when they left. 100% recommend this restaurant!!

Yelp
Use to absolutely love this place pre-2021. You can see my previous 5 star review. Unfortunately I moved a bit away and instead of being able to go once every other week I've only been able to go maybe 3 times a year. That said at some point after 2021 they decided to completely rebrand and renovate the space and to me its not been a positive change. They went from a welcoming family restaurant to now more of a fancy wine bar. Also in that whole change they reduced the menu a bit and went from custom sliders and such to a bit of a limited pasta only menu and they increased the prices. Regarding the prices now if I were to get a ragitoni with meatballs and meat sauce it costs me nearly $30! For one dish. I recently spent $90 for two people with no drinks and take away. To add insult to injury out of the past 4 times I've gone (once take away and 3 times to go) only one time was good and the rest the was extremely over cooked and mushy and the meatballs were dry and not moist. The most recent failure I investigated a bit and found they opened a bit more fancy place up north and I believe in that 2nd location took all the owners/good cooks with them so now the Westwood location is a bit of an after thought. All of that said I can no longer recommend this place as 5 stars. It's now a 3 Star place at best and borderline 2 star.

Abdullah H.

Yelp
What a shame! I placed an Uber Eats order from this restaurant and canceled it within one second to change the delivery address. Instead of refunding me, they kept my money and charged me for two orders--one I actually received and one that was canceled immediately. This is outright theft. Terrible management, zero customer service, and no integrity. Avoid this place unless you want to risk getting scammed!

Tony G.

Yelp
The restaurant is small but very beautifully decorated. Truffle Fries Are Amazingly Delicious! Wine Wednesday 50% off Bottle of wine. The meatballs are NOT round. They are round on top and flat at the bottom so you get less meat. Meatballs were soft and delicious BUT If your gonna call yourself House of Meatballs please give us the whole meatball. I dont care if u charge me more. Pasta was a little tough probably needed to be cooked longer. The marinara sauce was delicious. Im torn and not sure if I will return.

Yelp
The service here is absolutely amazing. I was meeting a few people here I had never met before and the waitress was so sweet. She told me if I looked uncomfortable she'd come to my rescue. She was so sweet. The overall atmosphere was so cute. They have an intimate little seating area and a wall of wine. The food itself was good. I loved the fresh pasta I got. I loved how they had tofu and eggplant meatballs. As a vegetarian it was nice to be able to order what everyone else is having. I love how you customize your pasta to your liking as well. Definitely would go back

Yelp
Lexi is a fabulous server - she made our experience soooo wonderful. Coming in clutch with the recommendations. This place is by far my favorite Italian place as a vegetarian PLUS the service is great. Both times I've been here, my boyfriend and I have sat indoors and there's super cute decor. Great servers like Lexi, yummy eggplant meatballs, butternut squash ravioli, and an adorable atmosphere... what more could a gal ask for? Thanks for the great memories HOM.

Yelp
I come here for the meatballs, they're never dry. I used to not like meatballs but this place is the exception for me. Staff here are always friendly and helpful. Ambiance is lively and fun. Parking is a bit difficult since it's so close to UCLA.

Yelp
This is my first Yelp review, but I felt compelled to write one because of how good my experience here was. My server was super sweet. The food was amazing. I liked how the pasta and meatballs were build your own with a lot of different options. The beef meatballs were tender and well seasoned. The marinara sauce was a little sour for my taste, but the dish still hit the spot. The server also had a treasure chest for kids to pick toys from! Overall, a very nice and chill experience. Would love to come again!

Yelp
the inside is super super cute! we went for my roommates 21st bday and the vibes were on par! - calamari was delicious, not must get but suggested - truffle fries were okay, not much of a truffle flavor, not must get or suggested - butternut ravioli was super surprising and unexpected because of its sweetness,, would recc and order again - the meatballs in the other pastas were really good!! i genuinely forgot what a good meatball had tasted like until i ate these! pork & beef r both good options - creamy tomato & pesto were okay but not as good as the ravioli ! - we also ordered a glass of wine (i don't rmbr the name, but it had hints of lychee in the description) SUUUPER GOOD!! doesn't taste like alc at all!! so sweet and yums!

Yelp
Just ate at House of Meatballs for the first time. We were promptly greeted with genuine smiles , by Jeanette and a gentleman. They quickly cleared a table for us. Tables are not too close together, even though it is a small restaurant. The ambiance is cozy, yet still has a cool vibe. I communicated it was our first visit and Jeanette enthusiastically told us about the menu. I ordered the salmon and my Husband had spaghetti and meatballs. We started with two Caesar salads, The food was served at a reasonable speed and delicious. Two people came by at the right times, to ask how everything was. Water was plentiful too. This was a great experience. Great value and delicious food with excellent service!

Yelp
This is a smallish, upscale eatery in the Westwood area. Clean, bright, airy with lots of beautiful wood, lots of bottles of wine, and lots of meatballs. Service is great. Nicely decorated. We had the slider trio and subbed a chicken meatball for one of the others. Great sliders. The buns are fresh, and have a great texture. Focaccia bread is brought to the table, and it has great texture, aroma, and taste. I had the chicken meatballs with cheesy white sauce on gnocchi. Wonderful. My wife had the chicken marsala with sauteed spinach and well-roasted potatoes. Excellent. We parked on the street, but you can also park in the Broxton parking lot and walk about 5 minutes. Restrooms have been renovated.

Yelp
Decent Italian food in Westwood. Gf and I ordered takeout and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Get the... you heard it here first... MEATBALLS!!!!!!! Especially the eggplant meatballs if you are veggie friendlyyyyy

Yelp
Great concept and GREAT SAUCE!!!!! The staff is fun and inviting. The outdoor patio is casual and classy. Love this place and loved the eggplant parm!!!

Yelp
As a long-time meatball enthusiast, I can confirm the delight that is House of Meatballs. The calamari, Cesar salad, and bread were well executed appetizers. We were absolutely delighted at the ravioli and eggplant meatballs, which had a surprising crisp exterior. I devoured the spaghetti bolognese with Turkey and pork meatballs. The meatballs are perfectly succulent and well balanced with herbs/garlic. My only regret was not ordering something to take home.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Five stars! This will now and forever be the place I dine before attending the theater at Yhe Geffen Playhouse nearby. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled that they had two options for me of meatballs- both delicious- eggplant and tofu balls! I had it both options over a gnocchi arribiatta with spinach and mushrooms. So good! And all of the servers were helpful and friendly, and the ambiance was fun and welcoming.

Yelp
My wife, son and I had dinner here Sunday night after moving our kid into the dorms. We were looking for a place nicer than the falafel or sandwich places that now dominate Westwood, but also didn't want a place that was pretentious. It's a smallish place with about twenty close-set but nicely finished wooden tables and a bar. We sat next to a delightful pair of ladies who were coming from the Geffen, and we were able to engage in a very pleasant conversation. Being that it's more on the formal side, I don't expect you'll run into anyone annoying! They have salads, pasta, ravioli, salmon and some absolutely divine eggplant "meatballs". .. and of course, beef or pork meatballs with your choice of pasta. I had the #1 spaghetti and meatball dish, with angel hair pasta, as did my kid. They were pretty good and more filling than you would think. That, and a salad chased down by a couple of beers made for a very pleasant night and a made the final night with our new bruin a lot easier for us. My wife's eggplant meatballs were a creative little surprise, kind of like eggplant Parmesan without all the cheese. We're gonna make this place our go-to dinner place when visiting our kid, and as a result of our chat with our neighbors, are planning to start going to the Geffen followed by dinner here... the bittersweet life of an empty nester.

Yelp
Went with my family and would definitely get again. Not vegetarian but I loved the eggplant "meat"balls! Pasta was cooked perfectly and not mushy
