Wowzers! Finding a new business in Seattle that hasn't been reviewed is like coming across gold. I read in the Seattle Met Magazine that Charles Smith had opened up a winery and tasting room in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood. Well, it's not just any winery, but the largest urban on the West Coast! It's location is perfect being right across from Boeing Field on S. Albro Place allowing you to watch planes take off and land. It was even better this weekend given that it was SeaFair with planes and military men galore. From the outside, the massive structure made of blackened metal and concrete has an very modern, pretentious look...yet step past the towering 21-foot tall door and you'll be quickly greeted by a friendly, outgoing feel radiated by the staff. Even the wine maker himself was making rounds.
The space is HUGE and spacious for large groups. It features a sky-lit foyer, second story tasting room (at the moment still not open), downstairs tasting room, and a peek into the LED-lit wine making factory. Bet you wouldn't know this was previously the bottling warehouse for Dr. Pepper?!!
Take a moment to decide which tasting you prefer:
-$10 for 8 Charles Smith [younger vines] wines
or
-$20 for 12 [older vine] wines including the 4 novel Sixto Chardonnays and 8 KVintners wines.
Note: If you buy two bottles during either tasting, your tasting fee is waived.
Bottles are very reasonably priced for stellar wines ranging from $12 up to $160 a bottle.
I was very impressed with the flavors behind each pour. My partner and I went with the second tasting. We are not normally fans of Chardonnays and often find ourselves skipping them. Since it was a hot summer day, we decided to give all four Sixto Chardonnays a try (plus they were included). I can say there has since been a change of heart. I now strongly recommend the 2012 Frenchman Hills, yet 2012 Uncovered is another great, more affordable option. We purchased a bottle for a BBQ at a friends house, and it was a hit!
Many of the younger Charles Smith wines you may recognize by their hand drawn bottle designs, particularly the 2014 King Fu Girl Riesling, 2013 Boom Boom Syrah, and 2013 Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon (my personal favorite affordable choice at $20 a pop). From the more expensive, older vine wine tasting, we thoroughly enjoyed the 2012 Northridge Merlot, 2012 Rock Garden Syrah and the big boy 2012 Creator Cab Sauv/Syrah blend ($55 for the Wine Advocate 95 pointer).
OK enough of my opinion, go check it out yourself. I imagine (and hope) that the winery will be participating in the Seattle Urban Wineries 2nd Saturday tasting day. Truly some of the best Washington award-winning wines are made and sold right here in Seattle. We now welcome Charles Smith's Jet City winery.
