Surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet.
House of Wong opened 4 years before I was born, and it's always been a fixture in my family. An American-Chinese restaurant, but one of the higher quality ones in the metro. I recently started a new contract, and there are a few chinese restaurants nearby that I've tried, none of which can hold a candle to House of Wong.
So many good things on the menu, but I'll admit my favorites are the bog-standard chicken chow mein and the House Fried Rice.
So many places serve a version of chicken chow mein, but it's often just a soupy mess. HoW gives you nice big chunks of celery and chicken. I'm pretty sure there's MSG involved, but I'm not one who thinks MSG is bad for you. It makes things taste good. And HoW has accomplished something many restaurants strive for: their food tastes the same as it did 50 years ago. This is a GOOD thing. I never have to worry if they've changed up their recipes or removed anything from the menu. What they do works, and no sense in fixing something that's not broken!
The House Rice is, like the chow mein, not a fantastic taste revolution. It's not fancy. It's very tender fried rice with chicken, pork, mini-shrimps, egg, onions and peas. It's really comfort food, and if you get an order to go, you can have 3 or 4 good lunches out of it.
Possibly due to the era that it appeared in, House of Wong has an American fare section of their menu. Yes, mashed potatoes in an Asian restaurant.
One ding for me is their egg rolls - I prefer the more tightly-wrapped Thai-style egg rolls, but theirs are big, honking rolls. They taste fine, but you could almost make a meal out of one of them.
Other notables are their fried chicken wings, and fried, breaded shrimp. They prepare the latter in a way I haven't seen elsewhere - it seems like they butterfly jumbo shrimp and then smash them flat before breading and frying them. The end result is a sort of shrimp schnitzel, and surprisingly good.
Also, too, they have a very respectable hot mustard. Not that wimpy stuff that comes in packets, but serious heat. As in, if you come in with a cold, after you have some of that your sinuses will be clean as a whistle.
I usually get take-out, but their eat-in service is wonderful. Very experienced and gracious servers.
Love House of Wong. Close to my house, triggers childhood memories, makes solid comfort food.
