Housing Works Thrift Shops - West Village

Okay, spot. I've purchased things from their before, but it feels they prefer white shoppers. I was questioned on where I got an item that was on the $10 earring rack right on the registers counter and then told it was accidentally there and actually $18. I will not be returning. Too many thrifts in NYC to worry about this one

Me and my fiancé visited today and saw a typewriter for only $50! As a writer my eyes lit up once I saw it! The employees were so sweet and even tested it for us! We are 20 year olds from a very sad part of queens so we only came to window shop but no one judged or followed us! I’m so happy with my visit :)!

I bought a Ringly smart ring here for $24. I took it home and found out it no longer has an app in the app store. I brought it back the next day and asked for an exchange for half the asking price and was told there are no refunds are exchanges. I returned the ring to them and told them i had no use for it. It’s pretty suspect behavior; parading around as a charity while simultaneously stiffing their customers for electronics that don’t work. I know that Housing Works is a charity combating Aids and homelessness, but that doesn’t give them the right to rip people off. Just saying…

A delight to pop in and check out the second hand goods every once in a while! I visited another store location in the city, and between the two, this one has more diverse offering of clothes, furniture, and kitchenware. The space is also larger and has a more welcoming feel.

I really like this place but since when thrift shops have become so expensive???, I used to come here often and prices were not cheap but they had good quality items so I would splurge . Lately this place has become a luxury thrift shop where prices are insane. Yes, they do have quality items the prices are ridiculous. Very disappointed considering this place used to be a place to get things that you would normally cannot afford.

Very much worth a consistent, weekly visit. I always find GREAT deals.

I’ve been donating stuff to Housing works for years. Over the years I’ve bought some amazing dresses. I love the vibe of this housing works. It’s very cozy and calm. The staff are all lovely. I love the wide range of things that are sold — from clothing to kitchen ware. It’s really fun to pop in and walk around when I’m in the area. Who knows what you will find next!

I had an item that I needed to return and eventhough their sales are final the manager in the store let me exchange and I ended up spending more bc I loved her massive safety pin earrings. I will be back bc this really stylish man convinced my girlfriend to buy some heels

Higher end items- more of a thrift boutique. Good quality sunglasses, shoes, and cute accessories that I'm still wearing!

Housing Works' mission is to end homelessness and AIDS through advocacy, providing comprehensive services, and running entrepreneurial businesses (such as the thrift shop and the bookstore) to sustain all these efforts. We stopped by the thrift shop to have a look around as we were in the area - they had a nice collection of modern, vintage, and boho wear, from clothing to accessories - they also had shoes, home decor, and books. I couldn't believe that they had boxes of new slides for only $10 or so, but, unfortunately, they didn't have them in my size. Staff here are super friendly and welcoming, and there seemed to be a constant rotation of selections to peruse through. You can help support this organization through donations and volunteerism! it's been still worst services here. they sold things not worth it. They don't accept my complaint at all. 1st of all, their Attitude is Worse. Look at the picture from last time, according to them, they put Wrong price. So they changed the price when I was at the cashier. Not only this, when I took it home, inside the height wasn't Even. I complained to them, they told me they gave me a Discount it's A LIE! How could it Final sell such item? I just found out, one shoe is missing inside. Then they told me "so why Did you but it from us? " do you want to buy it here? Everyone?

The prices for everything have become absurd. Like close to retail and sometimes even beyond. It's like they are using the fantasy asking prices people are asking on ebay for things as some guide to put absolute prices on things... Take "thrift store" out of your name... Also, they skim everything even remotely desirable anymore, even cookware and throw it on their live auctions so you lose the incentive to go there because you know you are never ever going to encounter something exciting on a shelf anymore that you can walk out with.

Housing Works: The org does good things for people in our community. That said, it has become rediculous in many ways. Especially the 74th and Columbus store. Too hot in there; reduce the lighting and it will be cooler. The staff could be much more helpful and more friendly. And the prices have become insane. And don't even get me started on the pick up method. It is a royal pain to arrange, and then they charge you a lot to collect and sell your stuff. Oh, how I wish we had Out of the closet in NYC....they know how to treat people well. Get back to the original ideals and to the customer service standards of years back.

Went in here to look around and saw so many attractive things, ended up buying a really awesome decoration piece! Not only was it clean and full of good vibes, but the staff was very professional and accommodating. Will definitely come back here if I'm in the neighborhood again, thanks guys :)

The merch for sale is good, but sometimes is missing key parts which the boxes don't say, etc. and then of course no returns. I've had pretty good luck here but better luck at some other locations. Most of the people who work at the W.V. location are helpful. However, the newly hired tall transgender identified male needs to relax with the talking about customers negatively directly in front of them and laughing in their face like Eartha Kitt on multiple occasions. You are, in fact, not Eartha Kitt.

This place has gone sooooooo downhill. Used to find interesting things every week, now the same stock sits theres for weeks and weeks at a time. A total let down.

Some of my observations that are location-specific: WEST VILLAGE (245 W 10th St) -has a musky old bookstore smell -jeans. lots and lots of jeans. -styles of clothes lean toward cool vintage college kid and middle-age professor stereotypes -gradautes might want to check out some entry level business casual clothes --- Chelsea (143 W 17th St) -tennis and squash rackets seem to find their way here -armoires, fancy dining tables/chair sets, and armchairs -very organized (clothes on the left, furniture in the center and back) -decent selection of books and framed art (in the back) Gramercy (157 E 23rd St) -this lighting here is dark -different types of furniture and clothes scattered throughout store -many people loiter here -I enjoyed this location the least -- it feels stressful Hell's Kitchen (730 9th Ave) * haven't visited yet * Lennox Hill (1222 2nd Ave) -curated, very organized selection of clothes -housewares look like they came from older folks -great shoe selection that tends toward the unworn side Park Slope (266 5th Ave) -this location has a nicer selection of furniture -clothing stock is... what people would wear when they no longer give a **** -great selection of newish books -lots of people seem to enjoy browsing their huge collection of records Soho (130 Crosby St) -location is more focused on clothes -furniture is sparse and tends to look very worn -lots of hats -quite a fair amount of new clothes from stores that no longer exist (similar in style to marine layer) -next door to the housing works bookstore and cafe! Tribeca (119 Chambers St) * haven't visited yet * Upper East Side 1 (202 E 77th St) -this location has a lot of dining chairs -other furniture reminds me of basements in middle america -mish mash of clothes for the working professional who doesn't care too much about brands -many people loiter here Upper East Side 2 (1200 Lexington Ave) -newest location! -visually, it looks like the smallest one, maybe even smaller than the one on E 90th & 2nd Ave -well curated just like the Lennox Hill store (E 64th & 2nd Ave.), but seems to have quite a few formal gowns and nice shoes Upper West Side 1 (306 Columbus Ave) -more extensive selection of furniture and housewares -clothing sections seemed more curated than other stories Upper West Side 2 (2569 Broadway) * haven't visited yet * Yorkville (1730 2nd Ave) * haven't visited yet *

Best home for unused stuff. Been making monthly treks as I clear out years of accumulation! Support this organization!

Love a thrift shop curated by gay men! Seriously, NYC at its best. The music is fun, the staff are kind and there aree some fabulous finds..

Check back into Housing Works often for storewide sales. When I went, it was 10% off your entire purchase, 25% off shoes. Not bad. I've seen days (not at this one specifically since I've only been here twice) where it's like 75% off all clothing or whatever. Then it's a total bonanza. This store is kind of tiny and can get crowded when it's busy, but there's potentially a lot of good stuff to be found. Decent selection of men's and women's clothing and shoes, although I can only speak for the women's perspective. Lots of women's jeans here, packed to the brim - some designer labels here, like 7FAM for around $30 or so. I do remember seeing a few Hudson jeans in this one and in other Housing Works. I recall spotting a really gorgeous navy Nanette Lepore blazer here, but it was still going for $75 - yes, it's cheap compared to the retail price of like $300 or so, but it's not that cheap for a thrift store you know? (that's why I wait for those sales, muahaha). I have picked up a striped American Apparel cardigan for $4 here. I almost picked up a LaRok purple silky top for $15 but it was too low cut for me to wear on a day-to-day basis... which was too bad since it was really a nice top. I did pick up Stuart Weitzman black pumps for $22 and Alice + Olivia capris for $7. There is a small book section in the back -- It's fun to browse through every now and then. There are two fitting rooms, but beware that they are curtains, and some obnoxious customer could very well barge in on you while you're half naked if you're not careful. The housewares seems to be a big hit with the women here - lots of funky pieces to finish your kitchen collection. I saw this one lady just carry off this entire plate set with her friend (to the register, I mean - not like steal). I'm not really into kitchenwares but if you are, come check this section out. When I went to the checkout line, the cashier seemed to have difficulty ringing up everyone's purchase with the discount, which kind of bothered me since I ended up waiting like 15-20 minutes in line, 5 minutes a person!? But I think that was the exception not the norm here (maybe he was new). With all thrift stores, this one is no exception: you need to check back frequently to see what gems you can dig up.

The perfect vintage desk, Taken out drawer by drawer Carried around the corner By a friendly stranger in the store Prada loafers marked $65 Acknowledged they were there for weeks So I paid only $25 Nestled among the blouses- Puppies and conversation Always a friendly face I walk in with giddy anticipation. Yay, that was fun! But really this location has a great neighborhood feel, I used to live around the corner. Customers who live in the neighborhood will bring in their pets and walk around so you get to see cute pups while you shop. Almost all of my furniture in my first apartment was purchased here! The staff are friendly and will chat you up. The selection at this HW skews higher end than most I would say. I've found Louboutins multiple times not in the auction case. When I went in yesterday to pick up some Prada loafers I saw the week before. They were marked $65 but I saw them at $40 the week before and they gave me the original price + discount for $25 and then an extra student discount on top of that at $20. I love you H-Dub.

I am not rating them as a store but as a charity. Writing as a person who wanted to make a furniture donation of a $500+ table that seats 4-6-8: They were not interested. Too little furniture to expend labor on. I get that. But their operations manager does not (appear to) understand the idea of "bundling" donations so that pick-ups could be efficient and not money-losing. I live in a wealthy area. Our donation bins in the basement are packed all the time! One of the founders, now deceased, was a friend. We are sorry to see this level of "corporatized" pick-up emerge.

GAH! I can't believe I haven't written a review of this place yet! I live right down the street and I'm on a first name basis with everyone in here. My dog pulls every time we are even remotely nearby because he wants to go in and say hi to everyone and receive his daily treat (they keep doggie treats stocked at the register!) I'll admit right up front that I am being stingy with the fifth star; partly because I don't want people to start crowdin' my local spot on the block. But also because the prices have gone up- it used to be 20-25 bucks for a vintage handbag and now it's 50! Literally the prices doubled within the last three months. And you can find Forever 21 stuff there that is priced as if you were buying in F21. But, in the end you really can't complain when you know your money is going to a GREAT cause, benefiting so many in our community affected by HIV. They also offer different types of memberships (I'm an advocate!), where you receive varying benefits, and I'm certain it's tax deductible. This WV spot is charming, warm and tidy.

Its a cute cool little place the employees are very nice and caring they have a lot of nice vintage stuff how ever something are a little bit to pricey for example i found a pair of men roshes blue and black they seem ok 7/10. Still can be wore a few more times i ask for the price here im thinking tbey were 15-25 bucks no they were 50$ the whole point to go to a thrifty shop is to save money and find cool things with 50 buck im sure i can find a new pair of shoes another weird thing was the fitting room is the curting was way to small people could definitely see you change other then that it was all awesome and great might come back

I live about a block away from the 10th Street location. You can often find great stuff..I've frequented the store often for many years, but their 'volunteers' have ZERO SENSE of manners nor decorum. They may be all 'politically correct' with their pronouns, but if you're a woman over 40, and you want to be completely devastated by an "Oh, you're here for the 'Senior Citizen Discount today?' type remarks from the staff while shopping, go on in! First time someone asked me, I was 47 (Aren't Senior Citizens 65 and older?) HINT: Age-ism is a form of discrimination and a form of HATE. My husband never gets asked if he's a senior, and he's my age, with much more gray. It's an anti-woman slur. Maybe the employees should just learn to keep their mouths shut? Isn't the first rule of manners/politeness is NEVER ASK A WOMAN'S AGE (nor assume a woman's age)? Maybe I look like crap because I've done some 'hard-living' lately- i.e. my mom just died. The female 'volunteer' then tried to rectify her comment TWICE by saying "Oh, but in L.A., you get a Senior Citizen Discount at 55!" (She said this twice, even after I stated to her "I am not yet 55"). Well, we're not in L.A., and I'm not a senior citizen, nor even 55! Wanna leave in tears? Go ahead and shop there! RUDE, CLUELESS, RUDE.

I've been to a few thrift shops and this one is by far the most organized and the most modern. I liked the many choices they had and it wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I made my second thrift store purchase of the day here, it was a great, fashionable jacket like sweater, I love it!

Small but well organized, this is one of the more diminutive of the Housing Works thrift shops, but being its smack dab in one of the trendiest, most fashionable nabes in all of NYC, the merch is pretty good. Housewares here are excellent. There were some nice wooden chests that were very reasonably priced. There was a funky red velvet couch for about $200 that would be perfect in somebody's apartment! I bought a silk tank from an Italian designer for $15. There were good shoes, purses, and jewelry, dresses, tops, etc. Some of the "gently used" clothing was a little overpriced imo, but you can find some good things at excellent prices, including high-end labels. I saw Nanette Lapore, Vera Wang, Betsey Johnson, Chloe, and McQueen on a recent trip there. Books, music, and bric-a-brac rounded out the selections. I think new merch is put out every Saturday. Totally worth a look around.

On a recent weekend outing, I decided to teach the hubby the definition of "vintage/thrift" shopping. The idea of his clothes being previously worn was not a thought he was excited about entertaining- I was a bit taken aback by what a snob he was coming off as. Luckily, the hubby trusts me and went along with my plan for the day. One of our stops was the west village housing works thrift shop where we were pleasantly surprised with our findings... - One hermes scarf - had to purchase online for this one (it was less than retail...they're all collectors items and as such are an investment!) - One ladies houndstooth custom cashmere winter coat ($45- petite size 2!!!!) - One paul smith cord blazer (in the hubby's size - $10) - One disgusting old photo that will look great over our bed ($3) Verdict? Hubby likes.

A real petite but a pretty Thrift shop in West. I would not come to this area just to visit this place but it's worth a visit when you are around. This is one of those "potful of free condom" place too. lol Guess how many I grabbed?

Oh hale no! Yes, they may carry a lot of high end brands and otherwise nice stuff, but they are charging accordingly. The last time I visited, they wanted nearly $50 for an 80s Jones of New York winter coat. So not worth it!!! There's better deals among the furniture IMO. I love the work this organization does but let's be honest. No deals here.

My wallet has recently been warning me against massive purchases, so thrift/consignment stores have become a my destination of choice. I checked out Housing Works this afternoon with a friend after seeing some promising reviews on Yelp and while I left without any purchases, this place holds promise for future visits. Big bonus: Its clean. And organized. Since its fairly small, I could actually discern where certain items were immediately; men's and women's are separate, clothes are arranged on the racks according to type (jeans vs. shirts vs. dresses) and accessories are mostly grouped together, although they are also somewhat spread out throughout the store as part of the 'decoration.' They also have some home furnishings, although I mostly overlooked them as part of the store. Because of its location, it seems to have more luxe items (I was amused by the amount of fur they had - my friend walked away with a pair of hilariously awesome fur earmuffs) and the price is pretty darn reasonable. Nothing looked very used at all, and items were mostly priced between $20-40. Unfortunately for me items that caught my eye were not my size, but maybe I'll have better luck next time.

all i'm going to say is that i got a pair of black fendi pants for $30 here. while they might be missing a button in the back, they fit perfectly and have become the pants of the moment. they also sell insanely cheap books and dvds. this store (and their other branches- specifically the one on montague in bk heights) kicks serious a** and all profits go towards a great cause. you should shop here if you don't already.

I love the housing works shops! If you take your time your nearly sure to dig up a good find! Don't forget to check out their website too for their auctions!

I've visited numerous Housing Works locations and I can safely say that the West Village location is my favorite. The West Village location has a wide selection of sizes, diverse selection of brands (including J.Crew, which, as some of you might know, is one of my favorites), and if you hit it on the right day, you can score some fantastic home goods. The shop is quaint, the staff is always pleasant and more than any other Housing Works or thrift shop in general in NYC, I always seem to score more treasures here than anywhere else (including a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans and a gorgeous pink tweed Hilfiger fall jacket). This is one of those places I always make it a point to stop in when I'm in the neighborhood.

Limited selection, very much hit or miss. Most of the merchandise is tacky and uninspiring, kitschy. There are books, but the selection is lousyyyyy. Lots of used clothing. And this is where they really shine. A drab cotton sweater - a previously worn sweater!!!! - is $75. I thought there was a misprint on the price tag. Nope.

Love this place! There are always classy and reasonably priced gems to be found. And you can't beat the fact that it's all for a great cause. Be on the lookout for random sales on occasion, too.

I schedule a pick-up. Give you the data but essentially no time window. Got two fellows who were rude and uncooperative. They made unreasonable assessment and refuse to remove a sofa. When I discussed the issue they left, did not take anything and got even more rude, essentially insulting. Not a charity and not worth the effort

The staffs are definitely friendlier than the one on 17th st. Found a Kate Spade Gwinette Lane Pitcher and Platter for $12 and $10 on a recent trip there. Saw some really beautiful Wedgwood place settings for $10, didn't get them just because i have way too many place settings laying around. The clothing option is great, but like all Housing Works, the pricing is too precious for thrift stores.

Hit or miss in terms of selection, but some nice finds. However, the manager needs to reconsider who he hires, as a few recent workers there are seriously lacking in customer service skills. In particular I am referring to Leshera who is extremely rude. I have never experienced this with previous staff. She should not be working in a position with the public as she clearly lacks the ability to interact appropriately with customers.

Return frequently, oh ye faithful, and you shall be rewarded. With things like Costume National shoes for $20, Diane von Furstenburg tops for $18, and a pair of long leather vintage gloves for $23. The only downside is that this place is so heavily trafficked that items disappear quickly. I've looked at items, turned around while contemplating them, and turned back to find that they've already been snatched up. Oh, and it is a little pricey for a thrift shop, but that's Manhattan for you.

If it didn't saying "housing works thrift shop", I'm not sure I ever would have know just by walking in. The store was very clean and well-lit, with everything seemingly well organized. I looked through the clothes but didn't see anything worth while. They had some accessories, nice shoes, books, some housewares. However, I did end up buying a very cheap scarf and bag. And everything goes to charity which is awesome. There are a bunch of locations that I have yet to check out although hopefully I will get around to doing so. Prices were not bad at all--true thrift shopping! It is worth checking out to see if you find that one "something." When I was there they had bags and bags of stuff they were going through--good sign for shoppers!

This is the coziest Housing Works I have found! It's small but everything is here. Some instruments, furniture, small but choice clothing and shoe section, a bookcase with books, records, and cds, and handbags everywhere! They have a downstairs too but I don't know what its for. Come during off-peak hours. Nestled in a quiet street lined with trees and sub-boutiques, what a perfect escape from the hot sun or the rain!

My main source of clothing since Canal Jean Co. closed. Some of my scores over the years include: A helmut Lang sweater for $30, a Helmut Lang suit for $100, and a perfect brand new looking Hugo Boss suit for $150. Sure they can be a bit on the expensive side (i.e. don't go there expecting to find a rare collectible for pennies, they def google before pricing anything that looks nice) but it is pretty selectively curated and 90 percent of the gear you will get there will be in perfect shape. Plus everything goes to charity so you can't really complain all that much about the prices. You may never get an amazing once in a lifetime deal there, but you will almost always get a GOOD deal. Of course the 23rd street location is much bigger and generally has the same quality stuff, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the SVA kids pick that place clean of the best stuff before you can even get your ass on the subway. The book selection is also pretty good. Lots of art books, and some newish, i.e. six month old fiction. Much cheaper than the sidewalk vendors too. Tchocke/household gear selection is mediocre, but they will occasionally have some nice stuff there as well. Like all housingworks they get great furniture, lots of mid century modern stuff, but I am way too much of a cheapskate to pay "full" prices for vintage furniture. Crowding can be an issue as the place is about the size of a large apartment and it can get packed on weekends, leading to 20 minute waits for a dressing room, so Shop early and shop fierce!

As with any thrift shop, you takes yer chances here. You are not always going to find something you want but this place can bear pretty decent fruit. It's not the biggest of the bunch but I think that works to the shoppers advantage. Too much crap is too much crap and this place does a good job of weeding out junk. It's usually less crowded than the other HWTS outposts as well. Clothing and furnishings tend to be rather high end for what I'm used to finding in thrift shops and the pricing reflects this but you can still find some outrageous deals on almost-new items.

This is probably my favorite of all of the Housing Works thrift shops. It's very well organized and the staff is sweet and helpful. It also seems to me that the prices are a bit more moderate than a lot of other thrift shops, even others operated by Housing Works. The stock is constantly changing and it's all for a very tood cause - providing housing and services for people living with AIDS and HIV. Housing Works, as an organization, has been in the forefront since HIV was identified.

Fanciest little thrift store I have ever been too. Merch is high quality so you won't feel too bad about the slightly steep prices. THINK of the rent they are paying in this location. Loved the vibe of the store, great music and staff. You'd think it was vintage if it didn't say thrift on the sign. Price: Med-high Value: Med- high Fun: Way super high Overall: 7/10

My favorite Housing Works! I almost always find something great here and the prices are moderate but still really good. This particular location is very boutique-like and in my opinion usually has better stuff than the others!

Okay so I don't know about the $1 items people keep talking about (*imaginery methinks*) but I just went today and scored the most beautifullllllllllllllllllllllllll shiny, army-ish green, shimmery, satin-y cocktail coat, a divinely sexy one sleeve flouncy fitted top and the cutest long hip-length cardigan today. The prices seem to go from $10 and up, and with a good spattering of items being above $30. However, there are still plenty of items for $10. Don't be dismayed. Def not the cheapest but I'm definitely going to be going back!

FINALLY, a vintage/thrift store with good stuff - meaning contemporary designers for SUPER cheap. Small selection, but most of the clothes are clean and in like new condition. I think I lucked out today - found several great pieces in my size (0, XS). I walked away with a Theory brown satin shirt, Shoshanna red flower sundress, and a black satin cocktail dress. All for $60!!!! If you go on Thursdays or Fridays, it's an additional 25% off. I'll be making weekly stops to check for new inventory. :)

This place is awesome; I'm a purposeful shopper. I've been to a few thrift stores but as soon as I walked into this one, it was a different feeling. This place is more like a boutique; it doesn't have that musky-moldy smell of a run-down thrift store. Within 20 minutes I found what I was looking for - two different types of bookcases and medium-sized mirror. I was so happy because I paid numerous visits to other thrift stores looking for furniture for my living room to replace my ikea ones and I was running sad because I couldn't find any worthwhile pieces to take along with me. And the prices are a small fraction of what I would've paid on ebay! From now on, no more ikea, overstock or anyother place without checking on this thrift store for quality furniture at unbeatable prices.

This is this one of the best thrift stores in New York, and probably the best Housing Works. I've been to all of the ones in Manhattan, and the one in West Village carries the nicest clothes (not just price/brand wise, but in terms of good taste, fabric and design). Makes me feel good about shopping.

One of my absolute favorite places to shop in the city. I always find myself at this little gem flipping through the racks in search of designer treasures. Picked up a fantastic Burberry polo for a fraction of the retail price, and have always found something great every time I come by. The staff is wonderful and friendly, especially when it comes to trying on things in the auction cases (where the really good stuff is). Such a great place to shop for real New Yorkers who know where to find a good bargain, and for a great cause too!

I love this place, plus it's for a good cause! They have some great vintage clothes that you can make look great if you style it the right way! Same with the furniture!

My wife and I browse and buy here on a regular basis although we are not with a helluva lot of money. Much of the attraction to this store is its personnel who are extremely sweet (diabetics beware!) and helpful, try to remember your name and your buying tastes. We've been going there semi-regularly for the past five years, and truly think of the salespeople there as an extended family, e.g., Kim, Lauren, Nelson, Miranda, Quinones, Linda and other salespeople who have relocated and/or moved to other assignments. Prices have gone up double-fold within the past two years, but we still manage to find the occasional bargain item which we needed or want. Lovely ambience that extends to many of the regular customers who stop and shop there.
