The Houston Museum of Natural Science is always a fantastic experience! We've visited many times and are never disappointed. there's always something new to explore and enjoy. The museum is full of fascinating exhibits that appeal to all ages, making it a great destination for families, couples, or anyone with a curiosity for science and nature. General admission gives you access to the permanent exhibits, which are incredibly well done and cover everything from paleontology and space to ancient civilizations and gemstones. For just an extra $10, you can also explore one of the rotating special exhibits we recently saw the “Extreme Live Animals” exhibit, and it was such a fun and memorable experience. The live animals were adorable, and we even got to touch stingrays and starfish, which was a huge hit! Another must-see is the butterfly exhibit. Walking through a lush, tropical environment surrounded by beautiful butterflies is truly magical and peaceful. It’s an immersive experience that adds a unique and relaxing touch to your visit. Overall, the Houston Museum of Natural Science never fails to impress. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, there’s always something new to learn and enjoy.

Now I’ve been to a number of museums when I travel and the Houston Museum of Natural Science really stands out. I ended up paying to see the Death by Natural Causes exhibit and it was an astounding. It has been a while where I have been entertained by a museum exhibit enough to read every plaque but this exhibit captivated me. It was wonderfully set up and the actual content was interesting and unique. As for the rest of the museum it was fun for the whole family. I loved the way the fossils were placed and the gem and mineral collection was plentiful. I had a great time and would definitely visit again.

HMNS has so much to offers families. The permanent Ancient Egypt exhibit is all encompassing. As an educator, we did a week of study and projects with Ancient Egypt. I highly recommend building background knowledge and experiences before visiting so you get the most out of your experience. The dinosaur exhibit could be enjoyed and appreciated with less background knowledge or direct teaching. My rating reflects my experience as a field trip coordinator with 50 kids. since our district booked all schools using one PO and check, our kids had to wait nearly an hour to get all the tickets. I would recommend booking each school with a different PO so kids don't have to wait.

We had a wonderful time at the Houston Museum of Natural Science! The exhibits were incredibly well laid out, making it easy to navigate and enjoy everything at our own pace. There was so much to see — from ancient fossils and dazzling gems to interactive science displays and life-sized dinosaur skeletons. What really stood out was how engaging it was for both kids and adults. Our children were fascinated from start to finish, and as adults, we found ourselves just as entertained and impressed. It struck the perfect balance between fun and educational. Overall, it was a memorable experience, and we’re already looking forward to going back. Highly recommend for families or anyone curious about the wonders of science and nature!

I loved this museum! It's absolutely gorgeous, not to mention so much fun to explore! There are so many cool exhibits! We did the planetarium karaoke and the only bad part was that the DJ let people sing who had already sung recently but it was otherwise really fun.

As for comparing Natural Science museums… there are many better.. the oil money helps here with the exhibits…did not get to see more than dinosaurs… too many lines and too crowded So more crowded than I’d like and I have visited Denver and London and several others. Crowded beyond being safe or comfortable All in all far too expensive for what was offered. Each separate exhibit was a new cost and parking fees were just very expensive almost excessive. We paid $30.00…. (Members pay $70.00 a year for $10.00 parking Exhibits were haphazard and confusing with very little educational value. The cafe is dreadful, awful selection of food and drinks and not clean… All considered this has to be one of the filthiest dirtiest museum I've ever been to. Exhibit fronts dirty and smudged, carpet unclean, tables dirty and toilets a joke… Just the worst. Certain this place was the cafe that made us both sick. My take-away is needs new management and attention to basics… cheaper prices for parking and more spent on cleaning and comfort / safety for guests …. Also some global warming education and terra forming?

I absolutely loved it! I toom my 3 little brothers, and they had a blast. I really recommend for younger children a d even adults. There were many selections to view with the display rooms to the observatory and Butterly garden. The store also had crystals and some artifacts for sale. I was quite amazed!

Absolutely love the museum of Natural Science First of all when you park in the parking garage, it is connected to the museum...no need to go outside, which is great for bad weather days...take your ticket with you because you pay for parking inside museum All of the extra exhibits are an extra charge, worth it, but just beware Butterfly exhibit is just the best. Walking through a jungle like 3 story with butterflies everywhere is just lovely I recommend seeing at least one movie, space through the sea, whatever interests you, I guarantee you will learn something new The museum is clean and well kept We went on a rainy day, perfect!!

I'm not a huge fan of Natural Science museums, but my kids always love checking these out. On our recent visit to Texas, we purchased the Houston City Pass, and this place was one of the options to choose. The museum is beautiful and there are several floors of exhibits to explore, including Dinosaurs and Egyptian history as part of their permanent exhibit. They also had a huge collection of animal taxidermy that were cool to look at. There are several exhibits that required an extra charge. This always disappoints me. I just paid my admission to the museum....why don't you include everything? If you want to see the Planetarium, the Butterflies or King Tut, you will need to pay an additional cost for each one. We did none of them.

Beautiful Modern Museum with lots of exhibits and interactive activities for adults and kids n They have a second of Egypt, Space, Dinosaurs, indigenous tribes, Energy, Sea Animals. They also have a butterfly exhibit which was close today but that was okay there's plenty to do. Took us around 2 hoursish to finish the entire thing! Highly recommend to anyone to visit ^.^

My kids love coming here. There are four floors of different exhibits. The dinosaurs are the favorite follow by the science. They have a lot of interactive things for the kids to do. There are benches throughout the museum for you to sit when the kids just don't want to leave.

We love coming to the HMNS! It's a great place to visit especially during the hot summer days! My only negative is that I wish there were more interactive opportunities for toddlers.

James Hood immersive exhibit "Beautifica 360" was cool... but, too, similar to his Mesmerica in 2022. if you've never been to a James Hood graphics show... then go. Yes, you need to experience it once...otherwise, skip this one

At the Houston Museum of Natural Science, my niece, nephew and cousin had an awesome day that was totally worth the $35 and the whole four hours we spent there. This place is seriously cool! First up, the shark exhibit. It was like jumping into a Shark Week episode. There were these huge shark models and all these facts about them that I never knew. It felt like we were under the sea, minus getting wet. And we got to pet stingrays housed in a pool. So AWESOME! Then, the King Tut exhibit - talk about a time travel trip! It was like walking into ancient Egypt. There were all these cool Egyptian things, like golden masks and mummies. It's one thing to read about King Tut, but seeing all his stuff up close? Exciting and surreal all at the same time. The "Shells of the World" section was like a beach holiday without leaving the museum. There were fancy and unique shells of every shape and size from all over the world. Some were tiny and bedazzled, and others were big and shiny. It's crazy how many different kinds of shells there are! And the gift store at the end? It's not just your regular shop. They've got all sorts of neat stuff, from books to toys that make you feel like a scientist yourself. If I have a bigger budget I could have spent hours just in the store! We stayed right up until they closed. Seriously, if you're in Houston and have a few hours to spare, this museum is the place to go. It's not just looking at old stuff; it's like going on a mini adventure around the world and back in time. Best day out in ages!

Our whole family visited with an out-of-town visitor, and we all totally enjoyed both the inside exhibits and the biosphere with over 35 varieties of butterflies. Keep an eye out for the tortoise and parrot. Total time there was about 90 minutes, mostly spent admiring all the butterflies. Upon exiting, there is a spiral park right across the street.

Houston is known for their amazing museums, and this one does not disappoint. Escape into your youth as you explore areas filled with Dinosaur replicas and 5 Dinosaurs that are made of actual skeletons from archeological digs. Wander into the gemstone area for beautiful and quite magnificent stones and jewels made of diamonds. The museum can get quite busy during the weekend but they offer parking in garage adjacent to museum for $30 and $10 for members . Recommend going during the week for more time to explore without the serious weekend crowds.

This was a great museum. We were looking for something to do today while in town, and the forecast was showing rain for most of the day. My fiance lived in Houston for a few years and recommended this museum, and I found it on Groupon: $39.99 for two people (normally $50). That being said: I had a little bit of sticker shock when we pulled up to the museum garage and it was $30 to park. It's less for members but $30 is almost as much as the cost of the tickets. The museum itself had a lot of things to view. We started off in the gemstone area and I love gemstones so that was pretty cool. We looked at the dinosaur area, a few wildlife areas, a few shell areas, and a Native American exhibit and the Egyptian exhibit, to finish the day. I think we arrived around 12:00 or 1:00 p.m. and we stayed until 5:00 p.m. until it closed. There are a few special exhibits you can choose to do as well, such as the King Tut exhibit right now and the butterfly house, but those unfortunately are an additional fee as well. I'm not a big museum person but I would return here because there was a lot we didn't get to see. Don't forget to check out the gift shop either, they had a lot of fun stuff and you actually enter and exit through there as well, if you're coming from the garage. Groupon has deals for parties of two, four, or six right now, unfortunately nothing for odd numbers of people, and you can save about $10 per ticket.

My family of 4 enjoyed our visit at the Houston museum of natural science. Parking was not easy to find, given that it was a holiday week. Once inside, we went to the counter to have out Citypass tickets scanned. The lady at the service desk was super helpful in Audi g me to find my "lost in cyber space-email" passes. This past weekend, we explored lots of exhibits. There were a few exhibits that were not on display. It was great seeing how excited my kids were about seeing dinosaurs bones, elephant, lions, and etc. Precious stones exhibitions are gorgeous. I wish I had more time to dive in more. So much to see and do. It was worth my time and money.

Great museum for all ages. There are 5 floors to explore with the lowest level dedicated to their current featured display, which is an additional cost. At the time, they were having something with sharks as well as king tuts tomb. Although we really wanted to see king tuts tomb, it was an additional $27 on top of the entry fee that we just didn't want to pay. There are an Egyptian area with mummies that are included with the regular entry fee though. The dinosaur area was my favorite with full skeletal rebuilds for you to see. If you do go, I would recommend starting from the 4th Floor as it closes at 3pm. We didn't know this and arrived at the floor at 2:57 and were advised this. So I would recommend starting on the 4th Floor and working your way down.

I have loved this museum for years! I am such a nature and science nerd, and this museum makes me so happy. I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of two temporary exhibits last weekend. King Tut was amazing. It wasn't packed, so I was able to read EVERYTHING. There were lots of reproductions of the items found in Tut's tomb and they were arranged as they were the day the tomb was opened. On to the Meg exhibit. I love sharks. There, i said it. They are interesting creatures and the exhibit was such a learning experience. Now this one was crowded. Even with appointment times, there were lots of people in the space. It didn't bother me at all. I loved watching the wide eyed kiddos and once again, I read everything. There were so many interactive stations. A huge video game, a life sized megaladon replica, a shark and stingray touch pool, a virtual aquarium, and so many other great things! After I had seen both temporary exhibits, I moved onto the rest of the museum. Y'all - MUMMIES!! They have real mummies - faces exposed. It's amazing. There is a cabinet of curiosities area where you can open these drawers and peer in at such cool things - shells - from the teeny tiniest to some pretty large ones, feathers from so many different birds - just all sorts of cool stuff. I'm rambling. Just check it out if you're in Houston.

My family really did love the museum. The dinosaurs was the best part. All around a very educational place to take the family. All the things to see will not let you down. The biggest let down was how crazy expensive it was. You have to pay for everything you want to see just the museum was $100 which isn't bad for all you see. But when it comes to $30 a person for the sharks and everything else is where it's not the best. And $30 for non members to park! There is a lot to see but be ready to spend some money! But for my six year old kids they absolutely loved it and want to go back.

Really enjoyed the museum exhibits, which were made even more spectacular by the knowledgeable and friendly volunteers! One of the volunteers even shared some materials from her personal collection - I loved seeing the passion and excitement they bring to the museum. The temporary King Tutankhamun exhibit is really interesting, and worth a special trip if you're in the area. My favorite part was the walk through that showed what the tomb looked like.

I have gone for both halloween and new years and it's such a fun way to spend the holidays. For events you can get a drink or a snack and you can also walk through all the exhibits. I am a member, so I look forward to visiting the museum often. This place is definitely worth checking out if in the area. I grew up near the Smithsonians in DC and I can say this place does not dissapoint

Had an amazing morning visiting the Houston Museum of Natural History. Get there early as parking is at a premium and lots of traffic. Once I found parking in the parking garage next door I started my tour. The people who work there are most helpful. Loved the dinosaur exhibition and the different rocks that were found around the world. The museum is clean and would recommend for families.

This was my kids favorite museum while in Houston. It's cool and huge! We went on a free Thursday night. The bright side was we saved money, the downside was that the place was PACKED! Also, parking is crazy on Thursday nights and ends up being expensive when you have to use their $30 garage! There's definitely a lot to see with the standard ticket. If we had bought special tickets, we wouldn't have enough time to see everything. It's cool that they have special exhibits though for regulars or people interested in specific things.

Musuem of Natural Science is a wonder! This musuem is huge and houses all the wonderful things found on Earth. There is so much to see, allow a half a day to a full day to really take it all in. During the visit we saw the King Tut exhibit, something I've always wanted to see but beware strollers are not allowed. The exhibit is setup like we're walking into the tomb itself, textured walls, dark, narrow corridors, once inside we see all of his belongings, the sarcophagus. The exhibit is really cool and informational.

Only the Butterfly Exhibit and the Dining Options are deserving of 5 Stars for the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The rest of the exhibits were underwhelming. My impression was colored by the on-site ticket agent who led me to believe that purchasing tickets for 2 for $54.00 to the King Tut's Tomb Discovery Experience (totally disappointing) would allow entry to all other exhibits which is not the case. We returned to stand in line again at the ticket window to purchase the Butterfly Exhibit tickets in the amount of $16.00. Only the personnel in the Dining Options were helpful and customer oriented. Otherwise, personnel were rude and in the case of the ticket agent, also, dishonest.

This is a great museum! We came here for the Ramses exhibit in May 2022 while in town for a wedding and we loved our time at the museum. The exhibit was very well done and it was a joy to view these artifacts from thousands of years ago. We also had some time to view the dinosaur gallery and it was one of the best we've seen; they had so many complete skeletons and they were posed in a quite dramatic fashion, which was great. We didn't get to tour any of the remaining permanent collection as we had a flight to catch, but it was a blast coming here and we would definitely return the next time we're in Houston!

I've included a prior review for this must see museum. Free Museum Day is Thursday from 2 pm--5 pm. There is a designated Free Tickets sign posted in front of the museum for guests to wait in line for the security staff to hand out tickets beginning at 2 pm. Lines grew long very quickly with museum guests of all ages. "Special exhibits admission costs" still apply. Tickets are available to purchase, when applicable, so visit website or Museum Info Desk for further details. All exhibits include detailed plaques to fill in all the missing gaps, professional lighting, and "no touching" signs are posted throughout. Restrooms, elevators, kiosks are readily available and an attached paid parking garage. Learning is intrinsically a valuable tool to our growth and development. There is an enormous amount of history enveloping every square foot of the museum. The creativity and juxtaposition of these exhibits will leave you entranced!

Wow. I left this place speechless. There is so much to do that I almost recommend visiting this museum over the period of 2 maybe 3 days. One day here is not enough if you want to see everything. I was able to visit an exhibit reviewing the human body and all of its wonders. I still talk about it to this day. I was also able to visit the butterfly exhibit. Highly disappointed in people and their inability to follow directions. You are NOT supposed to reach out and grab/capture/touch the butterflies but everyone does it. It was almost impossible to enjoy it as everyone around me infuriated me. Highly recommend this museum and all that it has to offer. There is something for everyone here.

Spend days here at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. We did ,2 days, and still did not see everything. Well curated exhibits from Texas History to minerals to the Dinosaur Hall are all fascinating. This place is a magical slot which will captivate and motivate learning. The only ding the museum gets is the temporary Shark exhibit. It was overhyped and not the best shark display in town. For that, go to the downtown aquarium and ride the train. However bad the museum's shark show is is how GREAT the rest of the building's displays are.

Absolutely incredible museum. Dinosaur exhibits rival and possibly best the Smithsonian in DC. Great place to spend an afternoon.

I love this museum! There is ample parking in the 2 parking garages for a reasonable fee. The exhibits are interesting! You will want to come back multiple times!

If you like museums and happen to be in houston, this is the place for you to visit! There are many historical as well as nature based exhibitions! Also, if you like dinosaurs then this is gonna be a fascinating place for you. I like visiting when I have a time and Thursday evening is free entrance so take advantage of good opportunities like that! Come visit and enjoy the arts Cheers

We always enjoy our adventures here. We came specifically for the new shark exhibit which was pretty interesting. It housed several interactive experiences for children.

I've always loved museums... especially living in NYC there are soo many museums that are accessible on any given day of the week. I have never been to a museum in Houston and neither has my dad (even though he lives in Houston) so I jumped at the chance to take him and my siblings to visit. My siblings and I were in Houston for the week to hang out with my dad so we took advantage of Free Thursdays (Tickets are first-come, first-serve) and we got there about 45 mins early (we were in the first 100 or so in line). I love dinosaurs, so I made a beeline for that exhibit. My favorite is the triceratops. It was also dope to see the environmental exhibits that show different types of geographical lands and the animals that are native to the areas. We walked sooo much. I don't think that we got to see the whole place, but I would definitely be down to go back and visit again. 10/10 would come back here again. I love wandering museums!

Went to the Houston Museum of Natural Science to pass some time before we could check in to our Airbnb. The museum itself costs $25 to get in and then they have a lot of add ons, such as special exhibits, the planetarium, and a butterfly exhibit that you have to pay extra for. The museum area itself is a pretty mixed bag in my opinion - the gem area and the fossil area were interesting but the other areas were a little underwhelming. A lot of the exhibits are geared towards kids, so if you have kids this would be a great and educational trip for a family!

The chemistry area is new. The kids spent a lot of time finding the animals in the exhibits, especially the Texas exhibit.

There is nothing quite like visiting the Cockrell Butterfky Center. It's a little oasis at HMNS and totally worth the money. I recommend bringing yourself on a weekday if possible to avoid the huge weekend crowd. This place is too knotch and just so cool, especially if you have littles. My 4 year old couldn't get enough.

Great museum with lots of areas to explore. I took a picture of the mummy section . I'd definitely go back and it was kid friendly.

This museum is a must visit!! There's so much to do here, and it is fun for all ages. If you're in the military, be sure to ask for the discount because it will save you a ton. The parking is pretty pricey, so be prepared. Other than that, you will have a great time.

I would rate this place a 4. We did the general admission plus the sharks. That was $35 per adult. For a big city, the admission is correct. Yes, special exhibits cost extra like $10 more, not $30 like someone said. Not sure where they got that from. You do not pay $60 total per adult, that's just dumb. Museums in Chicago charge extra for special exhibits, no biggie. For just the general admission, you do have a few floors to explore. Elevators were working for those that need it. The shark exhibit was pretty small, I was hoping for something a bit bigger. However, you can touch stingrays before exiting to the gift shop. Rest of the museum was educational and there are cool things to look at. You can plan to spend a few hours or more there if you look at everything. Every Thursday, there is free admission from 2-5 pm - first come first serve. Parking is $30 for non members. Pretty high if you're just visiting.

Came here to see the discovery exhibit of King Tut and got lucky that the solar eclipse was the same day. I've always appreciated the different exhibits the museum offers and how easy it is to get in and out. Parking nearby if you're lucky to find street parking is great. They do have a parking garage but it's quite pricey. There are more wonderful sights nearby to see so really you can make it a full day of a great outing!

The Houston Museum of Natural Science provided an enriching experience for our family. Though parking was a bit of a hassle, once inside, the helpful staff made our visit smooth. The Citypass tickets were easily scanned, and we were able to explore a variety of exhibits. My kids were particularly excited about the dinosaur bones, elephant, lions, and more. The precious stones exhibits were a visual feast. Though some exhibits were closed, we enjoyed the ones that were open and learned a lot. The museum was a great investment of our time and money.

I visit every time I go to see family in Houston. It always has something new, the special exhibits are fun and the museum store is extraordinary! Like legit the best museum store I've ever been to. And I'm a museum junkie. I didn't most of my time in the shells and gemstones this time. Did not disappoint! Unfortunately the butterfly area was closed, and will reopen in 2023. It was amazing before so can't wait to see the new version!

Cool place to learn about new things, and see new stuff. I particularly enjoyed the dinosaur, and Faberge exhibit.

Went to the museum this past weekend with family from out of town. The kids and adults all loved it. The richness of display from the dinosaurs, Texas wildlife, minerals and Ancient Egypt was something to see. Our tour was quick just because we had a lot of little ones who became eager to leave to go eat. I highly recommend this as MUST see for anyone visiting the Houston area. Even better it's minutes away from Herman park and the Houston Zoo.

My daughter and I love museums so on the day of our arrival to Houston, my brother treated us to a trip here. The Houston Museum is ginormous! So many exhibitions to see and not enough time. Our first stop was King Tut's tomb. So much history in that one exhibition, you definitely don't want to miss that one. We spent quite some time there reading and taking in everything there was to see. We had just enough time to walk through the Americas, Paleontology Hall and Faberge exhibit before closing. Again, this place is so ginormous. Plan for a full day if you decide to visit. For sure gonna be on my list our next trip to Houston.

Great museum to learn about history and science! The butterfly exhibit was also pretty fun and definitely a must do when visiting the museum !

First time coming here with my family. This place is massive and you can literally be here all day if you stopped and read everything. They have 4 floors of exhibits not to include the extra exhibits that have such as the Human Bodyworks and some kind of gem stone carved into animal exhibit. I did everything except for the animal gem stone thing. We were pressing for time so we kind of flew through everything and we enjoyed it! Highly recommend to experience once especially with your kids. Each floor has a bunch of displays of stuff such as dinosaurs, energy and science stuff, etc. There are signs everywhere to conveniently navigate throughout the building. All the staff are friendly and informational. They have a paid parking structure or you can park on along the street. You also pay for street parking, but it's free on Sundays. They have an area where you eat and/or buy food. Small amounts of outside food and water are allowed.

My friend and I wanted to check out the King Tut exhibit so we stopped by the museum on a Tuesday afternoon. We found street parking around the corner and walked over. It was packed but the line moved quick. We used our student IDs to get a discounted ticket (bring yours). We got a chance to see the three levels and really explored the Tut exhibit. It was really informative and time well spent.

All I'm going to say is I spent 1hr in the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Well worth it! Took the trolly around the park.

We ended up here on a kids museum day which was not my favorite, but I love that they open kids up to learning! The staff we spoke to were a little cold besides a gentleman in the gem and mineral hall. As an avid crystal collector I was blown away by some of the minerals they had displayed and the employee could tell I was gushing and came over and talked about some specific pieces. Beautiful pieces of rhodochrosite, amazonite, aquamarine and the largest pieces of rams horn selenite and Pyromorphite I've ever seen. Absolutely stunning! I feel like the curiosities section is a little gross, no plaques or educational information, just pieces shown for shock value like the elephant foot table. A lot of things in drawers were not pinned appropriately or labeled and it was just a bit of a mess. I would hope anyone showing oddities and curiosities would share some of the stories behind them and use the pieces as a place to educate others about conservation etc. The Egypt display was pretty rad! And they have great dinosaur and fossil displays.

What an amazing museum!!! The Egyptian exhibit is fascinating like you are visiting Egypt. They have gigantic dinosaurs and they had an amazing gen and stone exhibit that was just beautiful! I wish I had time to go into the space/planetarium exhibit. I would love to go back - this and the MFAH have been my favorite museums so far in the museum district. It definitely tops the children's museum... I think the food court was surely lacking but it's in walking distance of food... I found a taco place and they had plenty of nearby parking in garages on a Saturday afternoon. The cabinet of oddities was very textile and allowed you to touch stuff and play... I highly recommend! Not boring... it's easy to find boring natural history museums, this is not one of them.

There are times, when the benefit of living in a major metropolitan area is uniquely helpful. Such as the case, when I attended the Houston Museum of natural science - with multiple floors that document the evolution of mankind and their habits around the world.
