The 38 Best Restaurants in Osaka, Japan | Eater

"In keeping with Osaka’s punk rock attitude, okonomiyaki translates to “whatever you’d like, grilled.” The savory pancake is built from a batter of cabbage, flour, and egg, a deceptively simple balance that Houzenji Sanpei nails. Tucked in a Dotonbori alley, the little restaurant delivers big flavor with combos like beef tendon, konjac, and green onion; or shimeji mushrooms, scallops, and cheese. The chefs layer the ingredients on an iron griddle until the okonomiyaki is airy and balanced, before topping it with sauces and an egg — that is, if you’d like. Know before you go: Make an online reservation, as the restaurant only has a handful of seats with built-in flat griddles. If you don’t have a booking, try to arrive before 5 p.m. on a weekday to get in quickly." - La Carmina

Like many sit down places in Japan, there was a line here for lunch too. But less so compared to another spot we had initially wanted to eat at. We ordered the beef konjac jelly okonomiyaki (added scallops and shimeji mushroom) as well as potato cheese and bacon okonomiyaki. The place was small and ventilation wasn't the greatest so it was quite smoky. Just fyi, you will smell like oil! It's more hands off here, the staff cook the okonomiyaki for you and then all you do is take it off the griddle. Honestly didn't feel like the additions added too much to the flavor of the dish so better just get the basic ones. A solid spot to get freshly made okonomiyaki.

Decent. I think we were lucky that the wait wasn't too long. We had a seat of two and the food was brought over cooked (instead of having a cooking service) Overall good. Okonomiyaki goes well with beer. Yakisoba was also decent. Stir-fry noodles.

It was a quite a long wait but once you're inside you can see why. They make the food in front of you and is made to order. Best okonomiyaki we've had. Highly recommend this hidden gem.

Definitely worth the wait in line! Obviously it’s an okonomiyaki spot—and honestly, you can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu. We also tried the noodles, which were solid, but the real surprise? The tofu. It was unbelievably rich and tender—totally the highlight. And yes, while we were waiting, we ended up ordering edamame… three times. 🫛 🫛 🫛

The first time we came to this well known place for Okonomiyaki (they have other items on their menu) was two years ago and had to wait about 30 minutes in line to get in. After we had our dinner it was obvious why everyone is so willing to stand in the line no mater how long it is. The food here is delicious! So, we came back, stayed in line 40 minutes this time but it was really worth it! We highly recommend Houzenji San-Pei. Gochisōsamadeshita ❤️

A fantastic hidden gem tucked away on one of the backstreets of Dotonburi. Fantastic food, and a great place to get away from the crowds.

Google
Nice place with delicious okonomiyaki! Reasonably priced with many options. Keep in mind that you would probably wait in line for a while. We waited 30min. Then another 20min doe them to make the okonomiyaki. Overall good experience

Yelp
Such yummy okonomiyaki. You can customize it and build it to your own preference. It is so much food, I couldn't finish mine because the portion was so large. A must eat in Osaka. The queue was almost 1 hour of waiting though, don't know how worth it it was for 1 hour wait.

Yelp
When in Osaka, you gotta have okonomiyaki, right? We decided on Houzenji Sampei after researching a few okonomiyaki shops. Of course, you can always get some as street food in Kuromon Market but you can't beat the places that specialize in it. Like Houzenji Sampei. With different combinations (or a design-your-own option), you can try many different flavours and tastes. The best part though is that they make the pancake for you and bring it to your tabletop grill to season and dress, unlike other places that give you the premade batter to cook yourself. For a newbie at flipping pancakes, this was godsend. We ordered 3 different pancakes and a yaki-soba for 4 people, which left us all bursting at the seams. The yakisoba was bland (perhaps, because they don't specialize in it...) but all 3 of the okonomiyaki(s) were amazing, with crisp edges and tender insides. My favourite was the Shimei mushroom + scallop + cheese option. If you're ever in Osaka, I implore you to try a specialized okonomiyaki restaraunt. I highly recommend Houzenji Sampei be that restaurant!

Yelp
Came here for the Okonomiyaki and was not disappointed! If you are looking for a relaxed spot to avoid the droves of tourists on the main drags, this is the spot for you. I almost feel bad writing this review since we had such great time. The service was great, per usual in Japan. Greeted at the door and showed to our table. The menus have English or at least they provided ones to us that did. You can pick from a number of traditional combos or build your own. We grabbed the kimchi one and opted out of the noodles as we wanted to save space for other spots in Dotonburi. One thing that prevented me from giving 5 stars is that a decent amount of dust had collected on the exhaust fans. This is nothing new to establishments which have said set up (I worked fast food so I know how much of a hassle grease can be) but still not necessary, can be easily wiped down each night .

Yelp
We checked out Hozenji Sanpei because it's supposed to be less tourisy and more popular with the locals. It is located right in Dotonburi but hidden in a small alley way. You definitely have to know what you're looking for in order to find this place. Be aware that they really don't speak very much English but they do have an English menu for you if you ask. We ordered their yakisoba and their okonomiyaki and I have to say that I'm disappointed. I've had better yakisoba and okonomiyaki even in the states. In fact, I make okonomiyaki at home and it's better than the one I've had here. You can get the okonomiyaki with any toppings you want. There are a big list of suggested toppings. We had ours with mentaiko, bacon, and squid. Let's just say that this combo was a big fail. The mentaiko did not go well in the okonomiyaki at all. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here when there are so many other okonomiyaki places around. I didn't have a chance to try other places but I wouldn't come back to Hozenji Sanpei again.

Yelp
The previous review is not very accurate. They were very nice and cordial. The menu was pretty good and we had excellent service. Lots of locals waiting in a line. We got seated and served very quickly. We got 3 dishes and all were super yummy. :) I feel like the previous person was just making a bad review to make a bad review. Go here, you won't be disappointed.
