The Last Remaining Howard Johnson’s Restaurant in America Reportedly Shutters in Lake George, New York | Eater NY

"Once considered America’s largest restaurant chain, Howard Johnson’s — the last remaining location, a 70-year-old restaurant in Lake George, New York — appears to have finally gone extinct: it did not open for business over the Memorial Day weekend, its lease is listed for sale online, and the restaurant appears to have last opened its doors in March. The chain was an ice cream-fueled New England stalwart that reportedly hit its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, then shrank as fast-food chains like McDonald’s expanded; the last New England location closed in 2016." - Erika Adams

I stayed here for two nights in early October. The room is very small for two people - maybe it would have been comfortable for one person. Forgive the unconventional measurements, but it's width is that of three small chairs + a queen bed width, and the length is about a queen bed length + one chair. There's not enough space for two people to pass each other. The room is definitely old but everything worked. Similarly, it had a comfortable bed. There is no breakfast served. I'm not sure if I would stay here again. It was fine for me but my partner thought it was too spartan. I think it would be reasonable to think of this as one step above tent camping.

My family and I had the pleasure of staying at this lovely hotel, and I couldn’t be more pleased with my experience. It’s in a great location, just a short walking distance from the lake. The family who runs the hotel is absolutely wonderful. They were so welcoming and genuinely kind, which made our stay feel warm and personal. The room was spotless and well-maintained everything we needed was there, and they do room service everyday. If I’m ever back in the area, I’ll definitely be staying here again.

The room was cozy but perfect for our needs. The staff was delightful. The location to most everything was within walking distance. The price was very competitive. Their breakfast item was coffee and granola bars.

This room is way over priced for what you get (Way over priced this is a $65.00 to $70.00 room). Night clerk was rude. The morning clerk was nice. The room was very basic, no frills. No coffee maker in the room. Small room but clean. Their breakfast is horrible (a granola bar). For $90.00 plus dollars a night we thought there should be more of a selection.

Positive: The location is awesome. We parked our car then walked to everything we needed. Parking is a problem in Lake George so this was an incredible option and saved a lot of hassle. The pool was very warm. Staff was very accommodating and made up the room. Negative: The room was nothing special, small but clean. We didnt go to Lake George to hang out in the hotel room so it was fine for a couple nights sleep and off we go.

We went up for the weekend and had a total of 6 rooms. The staff worked hard to get us rooms together. When we got to the rooms we were pleasantly surprised how new and fresh the rooms were. We later found out that it was recently renovated. The beds were super comfortable and the cleaning staff was there each morning to make sure our floors stayed clean and our beds were made. They had fresh coffee in the nothing. I would definitely recommend this place! It was really in the perfect spot, the perfect price and a perfect stay.

Google
Great value for the location and price. They seemed to have recently renovated or made modern additions to the rooms, it had all the basics. TV worked well, but only the most basic channel, there was Wifi but it didn't work on the TV for some reason. The AC in one room was really loud making it a bit difficult to sleep, but the bed was comfy. Front desk attendant was pleasant and helpful. It's a good place for a short stay or something more budget friendly.

Google
Perfect location and rooms are clean and updated. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Pool is a little dated still BUT clean and plenty of seating. Don’t think there is a better option at this price. Could not find a negative to be honest.

Yelp
The staff is nice the room was clean, it's small though. May be the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Outside of that it was solid and we got a good nights sleep which is the purpose.

Yelp
This Howard Johnsons offers basic accommodation. All I want in basic accommodation is "comfortable and clean"-- and this location has all the basic amenities. Set back a bit from Main Street, our room was quiet all night. Would stay here again!

Yelp
This was a fine establishment in the best possible location for us on our little one. It was to the right of the gaslight bar and restaurant which was phenomenal and fairly priced. And across from kitty rides and an indoor arcade. And of course to the left of the parking lot is Canada Street which is where everything is we were able to walk to get a boat able to walk to the shops etc. Great price great Location can't beat it.

Yelp
Room decor is ugly, bed was HARD, I could hear the people upstairs walking around, the bathroom has someone else's hair on the shower curtain, there is no duvet- just two flat sheets sandwiching a tissue thin "blanket", and when I turned the heat on to warm the room it smelled like something was on fire. It set off the smoke detector in the room.
