Howley’s Review - West Palm Beach - Miami - The Infatuation

"Howley’s is a diner that proves something as simple as homemade apple sauce served alongside ASMR-crunchy fried chicken can bring a tear to your eye. The principle foundation of a diner is that it’s reliable, simple, and dishes come with your choice of wheat or white toast—and Howley’s ticks all those boxes. It’s been around since the ’50s but luckily the interior has been given an update since the days when you used to be able to smoke and eat eggs at the same time. Howley’s is open until 2am, so this is the perfect place to grab a slice of cake after a long night out and pretend you’re in an Edward Hopper painting, or that you’re a detective whose blood is made of coffee, doughnuts, and vendetta." - Katie Walsh

I ordered a shrimp-salad sandwich. It hit the table quickly—and that, sadly, was the high point of the meal. The sandwich reminded me of my ex-wife: cold, uninspiring, and utterly devoid of character. Let’s start with the fries. They were stale and cold. Come on—French fries? If you can’t nail those, you won’t redeem yourself with ... a seriously banal shrimp-salad sandwich. Said sandwich featured a few overcooked shrimp (seasoned with, apparently, nothing) and vaguely wilted lettuce, all stuffed onto a lifeless croissant. For those keeping score at home, I paid full freight for this disappointment. I’ve been coming here for years, but unless an “Under New Management” sign appears soon, I’m out. Avoid. Run away. Hell, if you’ve got a bum ankle, hobble off as fast as you can.

Fantastic!! Biscuits and gravy might be some of the best sausage gravy I’ve had. Really good. Grits were really good… could have been warmer. Coffee was delicious. Atmosphere awesome, staff was fantastic. Price was spot on!

The portions were surprisingly large and the quality of food was top knock. The veggie lasagna was worth a trip to Florida. Seating was comfortable and the staff was kind and welcoming. THE ONION RINGS ARE HOMEMADE AND HUGE!

Google
Blackened chicken sandwich for $16 with tax. Words cannot express the delectable nature of this fine sandwich. Never before have i had a sandwich so unbelievably life altering. Rich juicy flavors in each bite. A testament to everything good and just in this world. A perfect end to a wonderful school year.

We sat outside on the patio due to bringing our small dog today. Service and food was amazing! We would definitely be back the next time we are in town. Just posting my food since everyone else was halfway done already. For anyone that loves the sauteed spinach or a good mac and cheese these both past the test 100%. I didn't get a picture of the fried mozzarella. You get five squares and homemade sauce for $12. My only complained is that I think 12 is a little expensive for five squares and it should be at least 6, but these are amazing and definitely a must try appetizer.

Had an amazing meal at Howley’s! The food was absolutely delicious — we had the hot cakes, blackened chicken sandwich, and egg sandwich, and everything hit the spot. Big shoutout to Jenna for the great service — she was warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. Can’t wait to come back!

Maybe I’m biased because I love Subculture spots but I really like Howley's. It delivers a classic diner experience with a welcoming, retro vibe that's been a local favorite since the 1950s. It honors the classics on their menu but also has a lot of unique specials and plenty of healthy options which I appreciate; I’ve been here for breakfast (didn’t take pictures) and for dinner. For breakfast we each got eggs Benedict, I had the crab one (10/10) and it was worth the crab upgrade for sure! Im writing this review after dinner and I had the chicken soup (5 stars) to start. My waiter Jake, who was really friendly and helpful, told me about the TV Dinner special, which changes nightly. This particular night it came with chicken piccata, peas, creamy mashed potatoes, and a brownie and served in a fun tv dinneresque plate. It was a nostalgic yet elevated take on the classic TV dinner, with every element cooked fresh. Whether you're craving breakfast, lunch, or a late-night bite, Howley's is a must-stop for anyone looking for delicious, real food in a fun, old-school setting. I will certainly be back!

This Diner has been around forever and has some good bones. Inside has been updated and expanded with nice decor and artwork. This place has lots of character and charm. All day breakfast! I came for lunch with coworkers. Everyone enjoyed their meal and service. The TV Dinner was a hit. It does vary day by day with no substitutions. Plenty of parking in the back. Come for lunch, come on the weekend and have a late breakfast. Definitely a place you will come back to for multiple occasions!

Yelp
Food is great here. Was recently ordering on Uber eats and got the order wrong , Taylor who works there called me and told me I ordered it wrong and she would correct it on her end instead of making and sending an order that didn't make any sense . Great customer service and a great employee.

Yelp
Been there since the 50s diner fare, big good sandwiches the Chili got too have. Specialty are Real Southern Fried Chicken, I have never ordered Meatloaf in a restaurant Undoubtedly. The best you ever had Homemade Mashed Potatoes greens. Wow the Fried Chicken is a generous serving with honey and your choice of vegetables. Milkshake is really good cakes are all homemade and again win. Whenever I go East I often eat at Howley's. Very beatnik clean and an icon. If you haven't tried it please do. Great food

Yelp
I loved the 50's diner vibe. Our server was excellent. She was so pleasant and on top of drink refills. It did take awhile for the food to come out but not sure if that's the norm. We weren't in a rush. I ordered the patty melt medium with sweet potato fries. I completely forgot to take a picture. The beef patty was thick but definitely more on the well done side. The bread was thicker so the bread/meat ratio was perfect. The onions were tasty. I would have preferred more sauce since the patty was so thick. The fries were good but not very hot. I'm so glad I tried it. Will be back!!!

Yelp
Love the vibe - old time diner with murals and vibrant paintings. Very clean too. The servers seemed to work as a team and kept our teas filled upon request. The crabcakes, rueben, and fries were all big hits. The sides, spinach and mac & cheese were large portions. The spinach was excellent. I had the TV dinner. It was a fun idea. I loved the little brownie. The protein was a chicken cutlet with BBQ sauce. I liked the sauce, but the chicken was chewy. Note: this place is just 10 minutes from PBI.

Yelp
Howley's is a cool place to grab good food in a casual diner atmosphere. The service has been excellent every time I've gone. This visit I ordered a hamburger with onion rings. Both were cooked perfectly and I made an absolute pig of myself leaving a clean plate. My friend had a patty melt with onion rings. She didn't make a pig of herself but said it was really good. Howley's is open pretty late so it's a good spot for a meal before a part night or after if you're not out all night. They're also across the street from the new skate park so some of the younger crowd goes there too. They also have amazing desserts if you just have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
This restaurant came highly recommended by a relative who resides in the area. Judging by how busy and crowded it was, you'd think there's a jackpot on a plate. However, it was just okay, nothing spectacular. The menu reflects typical breakfast/diner style options. I kept it simple and tried the pancakes. The flavor was mediocre. Perhaps, I'd try something else if I happen to go again. But I'm not in a hurry!

Yelp
Found Andrew to be very curt and unfriendly. The ambiance was cute and unique, but I wish we got a different server. It was not busy when we went, but perhaps he was having a bad day. Would not care to have him as our server again.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place, classic American food. Very no frills homemade taste and feel to the restaurant. It's in a small cozy location and staff are friendly as are the patrons. The food was okay and the cocktails also were pretty simple but good. I'd go back. There is a decent kids menu too and my toddler was able to have the grilled cheese without an issue in that the bread was nice and soft and cheese was perfect. The Frankenstein decor for Halloween was successful at freaking my kid out too. Funny not funny lol. Go try them. Live and love.

Yelp
Went to breakfast with a friend and had a wonderful meal! Eggs Benedict Florentine - cooked perfectly and with plenty of spinach; fried potatoes had just the right amount of flavor and crispness without being dry. Friend ordered her usual - goat cheese omelet with fried potatoes. Looked delicious! Had a great time; server was attentive; restroom was clean; artwork is intriguing!

Yelp
I have been here for the second time and the food was perfect. I know Sunday it could be busy, especially during mother's day. But it was worth the wait! I will go back in a heartbeat!! The service was amazing. Our server was excellent and the best part was that she was quoting the Grinch. The service is reliable, kind, and patient. The atmosphere is different from any other dinner I have been to. They have a big connect four game outside and a small mini golfing area. Inside is loud and busy. Reminds me of home and the art work is amazing. This place will give you the best experience!

Ben C.

Yelp
Poor service and the food was not good! How can you mess up pancakes but they did! Nice place that's all the good I can say.

Yelp
We went here for dinner our first night staying in West Palm and liked it so much we went back for brunch the next day. Our flight arrived late. We decided to find a good finer since they are usually fast. A friend recommended Howley's. We saw the Yelp reviews. Together, these said we should go - so we did. We ate outside for dinner. It was cool but comfortable. The service was surprisingly good since we were the only people on their patio. Their menu was good, but limited if you can't have gluten or milk products. They don't offer gluten-free bread. They do offer a chopped steak, so I decided on that. Others in my party had their brisket special and a Nathan's Hot Dog. I was the only big eater at the table. I finished my steak, then polished off what was left of the hot dog (sans bun) and the brisket. Everything was really good. {grin} The breakfast was equally good, but no picture that time. Howley's seems to be a consistently good place. Their prices are reasonable for the quality of food they serve. And the service is great. It We are planning another trip to the area next winter. Howley's will be on our dinner list!

Yelp
My cousin flew into W Palm from NJ early morning and we usually find a breakfast stop on our way back to my place. New Jersey has a diner on every corner and I had read reviews about Howleys and made the suggestion. Our first impression of the interior was definitely an old diner with memorabilia of days gone by. We were seated immediately and the server delivered coffee in wonderful large cups. We ordered an unusual dish on the menu, a southern style Benedict. of cornbread topped with pulled pork, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce with a side of fruit. We both agreed it was a good idea to share this huge portion. It tasted better than it looked. The hollandaise sauce had a mustard base and was perfect as a dressing on the meal. The fruit cup was fresh and had a good fruit combo. Prices were fair and parking was easy around back. We had plenty of coffee and left satisfied. It was a good choice.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great experience. Enjoyed the coffee from subculture and the food was very good. It's busy for a reason.
google avatar

Suzanne K.

Yelp
The crab cake was fantastic! I had to order it because it was voted "best in county" and noted to be a specialty on the menu! It was delicious! We also had the deviled eggs and the Patty melt- both also amazing! The only thing is the service was slow, but so worth the wait for the food!!
google avatar

Laurie G.

Yelp
I will start by saying if the only thing you get is the cocoanut cake then your trip was worth it! If you're full, take a piece to go because you will not be disappointed! The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was good and reminiscent of diner food but will a more home cooked feel. The building doesn't look like much inside or out, but the food and the service make up for it. If you're in the area this is a great low key place to try.

Yelp
Ugh... I really hate to not love this place. It has such great potential, but fell flat. The host was amazing & the bright spot in the visit. Our waitress seemed put out to wait on us. She took our order & then we never saw her again until she brought the check. We needed stuff in between, but we had to ask the host for help. We got 2 breakfast orders, 1 burger, & 1 sandwich. Simple stuff that took a long time to come. The food was okay. The breakfast orders were fine, but the others were just bad. The sandwich was said to have no flavor. Then the burger was said to be bad & upset the person's stomach. Just wanted to live the vibe & it wasn't it. The place needs work. It looks old & dirty. The bathrooms are terrifying.

Yelp
A standard that never disappoints from the drinks to the coconut cake, breakfasts, steak and eggs and burgers too. Still, I miss the loaded potato skins they used to have under their snackaroos. Super fun vibe with great service and a great meal every time.
google avatar

Leqi H.

Yelp
You know you're at a great spot when they're super busy! It was definitely worth the wait! There's an outdoor mini golf area and connect four to pass the time. The interior is filled with memorabilia and cool artwork which fit the diner vibes. The waitress was super friendly and made the whole dining experience wonderful. I got the country fried steak and boy were the portions amazing! Will definitely stop back again!

Yelp
Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy! Karen and I took the last space in a very crowded and tight parking lot. After a short wait for a table. Our waitress greeted us and continued the awesome service continued through out our meal. Then menu was filled with yummy comfort food. My Mac and cheese was amazing. You have to try this gem
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
Just before Jack cut down the beanstalk, Max and I climbed our way to the top to see what the fuss was about. This place is massive on all levels. The to go tin pans will seal the deal if you had any doubts. Looking for unique restaurants? This is the place. Jessica was our server and her personality was beyond gigantic. Sit on the bar stools to get an education on how to cook. They were a well oiled machine with some calling out for help and the entire team went into recovery mode. The food packs a flavorful punch. Max and I left like stuffed kings and queens.

Yelp
Wow, I have gone by Howley's for over 30 years, but stopped by today with a friend for a late lunch. It was so worth the stop, the food and service was outstanding. I had an IPA from Stuart which was wonderful and seriously the best crab cake around, my friend had the thanksgiving dinner which looked amazing and she said it was delicious. They also have a pet friendly patio, which I think is enclosed, so I will be back with my buddy
google avatar

Gina R.

Yelp
The food was good. We ordered iced coffees, a club sandwich, fried chicken, a hummus plate and a caprese salad. The service was decent.
google avatar

Terry P.

Yelp
Food was fantastic!!!! We had gone here pre-pandemic. Nothing has changed. Just as good. Server (,Jake) was great. He greeted us as well as the hostess. It was a wonderful pleasure having him as a waiter. The ambiance of the restaurant is a 50's diner. With a surfer vibe. Great place --- check it out
google avatar

Verbil K.

Yelp
This place is everything you want in a breakfast spot. It has a great laid back vibe and interesting decor. As they say the food is prepared out in front you and yes it's executed perfectly. Service is attentive and fast as well. 4.5

Yelp
Amazing!! The vibes at Howley's are always good, very retro and kind of funky. Servers have always been welcoming and willing to help with any questions. We have been there twice and i definitely prefer their breakfast options over lunch. Both times food has been delicious and tasted homemade. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned, however the creole sauce in the shrimp and grits was overpowering the whole dish. My partner loved the burrito and sweet potato fries. Breakfast was amazing! The Eggs Howley's were very tasty, i would recommend getting this more as a brunch meal since it can be kind of heavy for breakfast. The grits were creamy and cheesy, and the corn muffin was pretty sweet but well balanced if you add butter. Coffee was great, and we had a great server who made jokes and was hilarious. Will definitely be back (before 1pm) to try more of the breakfast items.
google avatar

Yelp
Our waitress was amazing. Great service, great atmosphere. My brother got the crab hash which was yummy. Great coffee too!!

Yelp
Great spot to stop by and grab some breakfast. Friendly staff and delicious food! If you're in the area, definitely stop by
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Howley's is a unique spot to say the least. The long grill right when you walk in takes you back to the diners of yesterday and breakfast served all day brings that comforting nostalgia. The breakfast is really good, but my favorite thing is actually their Caesar Salad. The dressing is homemade and you can definitely taste the difference. The staff is friendly, but not over the top.
google avatar

Gabrielle B.

Yelp
Brought my BF here for Sunday breakfast. I got the crab cake eggs benny and the hollandaise sauce was so good. It is pretty rich so I did not finish the whole dish. Definitely recommend it! Very chill vibe and old school diner feels. They normally have a wait but it's worth it. Check it out if you're visiting or looking for a good breakfast diner.
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
I loved the service, our waiter had a great sense of humor and provide excellent service. Started off with a fantastic Bloody Mary and got the pulled pork Benedict. The cornbread was soft and sweet and the pork was melting apart. Cool old school diner tucked away from it all.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a local, treasure. My guess is Howley's is a landmark set in the art district of WPB. It's a 50's style diner that has flare, ambiance, and style. This is a classic american greasy spoon which means the food is awesome. You can have breakfast/brunch/lunch. I went all out with an American breakfast and added some biscuits and gravy. Food is well priced and portions are appropriate. They also have the added benefit of a nice selection of liquors for drinks such as bloody Mary's, and others. They also offer different microbrews. Alcohol prices were higher than expected in my opinion. I don't think our server liked us too much after I asked if there was any drink specials. Oh well, overall....Howleys is a piece of history that I'm glad has found it's way through the decades. A great dining experience and interesting art to look at and converse over or buy if you are inclined. Definitely would like return for the comfort food!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for brunch and crab cakes Benedict it was fantastic! We went back for dinner and I had the crab cakes again ...they were delicious! Tyler our server was charming and attentive. Love the ambiance it's a ten .
google avatar

Yelp
We loved loved the ambiance decor and enthusiastic waitress. The reviews were all SO good that we rushed over with excitement. Our picks were the turkey pot pie and open faced meatloaf with requested beef gravy. The pot pie came out huge! A gorgeous vision of a large rectangular giant puff pastry pipping hot. Unfortunately it was mostly a cream based filling with some seasoning and very little turkey... mostly puff pastry sadly. The meat loaf was beautiful, a nice generous portion on a large thick slice of hard Texas Toast. I think mashed potatoes would be more perfect with this dish and my requested portion of beef gravy should be added to this dish. Seasoning was good, not wonderful, dish could have been hotter. I love to cook and use many different spices. Both these dishes had identical seasoning. I ordered a blueberry muffin to go. No butter in it. We will come back one more time - - come to Bascomb Palmer Eye Clinic from Sarasota. The chef salad looked gorgeous next to us! Hamburgers have rave reviews and breakfast. The restaurant business today is murder for owners, hard to find/keep good chefs, staff, so$$$$. Howley's is almost there, just more attention to flavor, seasoning.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
This is always a good choice. The variety of dishes is impressive and everything has been good for years. The staff is always helpful and friendly and lost have been there for years. The art on the walls is mostly for sale if you like something. Because of this it rotates out regularly which adds to the ambiance.
google avatar

Chelsea M.

Yelp
This is prolly one my favorite places at this point this year, old diner feel and fun comfort foods. I will definitely stop by anytime I'm in town. This is not a fancy place it is a more come as you are type of place. The service was good waiter checked on me a few times.
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
Fun great food ambiance of a super fun diner but w great food AND drinks They have bands at night, but I have yet to see them. Sounds like even better than they probably might have us on Sundays. There's lines and you have to stand in the sun.

Yelp
4th of July deliciousness was the fare at Howley's last evening. I had the Brisket Burrito, and it was amazing. A multitude of astounding flavors were had with every bite. One of the best meals I've eaten in a while. Nice to not have to prepare anything in the kitchen today. If you're looking for amazing and delicious cuisine, this is your place!
google avatar

sandy k.

Yelp
Once again, the Howley's kitchen out-did itself by preparing another awesome late night meal! It was so good that one of our friends ordered the exact same meal for takeout to allow their partner to enjoy as well! The takeout was a warm roasted Turkey off the bone sandwich.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Looks like a diner, which is fine by me. Nice terrazzo floors, don't see that much. Excellent half sour garnish pickle. Blackened chicken sandwich tasty. Big onion rings. It was a pleasure watching server Brittany work in a short staffed environment.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Howley's has become a go-to for us when traveling back from central Florida back to Fort Lauderdale, when we're wanting to hit somewhere out of town for a change. The ambience and servers all give off more alternative vibes (and thus way more comfortable) than what I usually experience in the area, and cheap PBRs are always welcome. Dogs are welcome outside, which is always a relief as we are often traveling with our pup. The artichoke dip has become a must, we were recommended it on our first visit and it gets ordered every time now. It's definitely filling, even when splitting between the two of us, which means a good chunk of my entree usually comes home with me.
google avatar

Louis M.

Yelp
Lovely original diner with a distinctive vibe. Many tasty diner style options with lots of comfort food choices. Truly beautiful retro decor. Around a fun place to visit.
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
The service was amazing! Our waitress came around a bunch and was VERY nice. The food was not great. My husband had the country fried steak with tots and I had the kids burger- neither were amazing. We both got chicken noodle soup and that was delicious!
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Super busy, but what do expect for Sunday @ 11:00 am. Sat at the counter. Staff super personable, talked to the cook and she suggested some dishes for us. Followed her recommendation of the Howley eggs, which was 2 crab cakes done eggs Benedict style. Food was very tasty. Had a cocktail, which was good. Would return if I was in the area again. Oh, forgot to mention open since 1950!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. Long time customer. Good vibes. Good food. Not overpriced. I love the deviled eggs with bacon and capers! Never had a bad experience in the countless times I have been there.

Eileen S.

Yelp
Service - a milllion I've been in fine dining establishments that couldn't hold a candle to this place. Ambiance - reminded me of the traditional diner of the 70s. Tables weren't crowded together. Very homey and comfortable. Food - I got the tomato bisque. The bowl was so large I couldn't finish it. But the BEST part of my experience was the coconut cake. Without a doubt, the best on the planet!!!!! I WILL be back!!!!
google avatar

Steph W.

Yelp
Ambiance (5/5): This is your classic diner atmosphere but with an open kitchen, outdoor dining, and also decorated with retro themes like Simpsons, Mario, Spy v Spy etc. In the front, there's mini golf courses to keep you entertained while you wait. The space is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded and the noise levels were appropriate. Family-friendly. Service (4/5): Our large party of 6 arrived around 10:30AM and we were seated immediately! We were served fairly quickly. Food: Crab Hash (3/5): I wanted something different and the hash came with several bite size pieces of crab. The platter comes with potatoes, peppers, slices of bacon, and toast. The serving size was great but the taste was just meh.

Yelp
this place had some pretty cool decor straight throwback to the 90s was so fun to see a lot of the cartoon characters I grew up with. They had a wide variety of fresh made American flower food. They were shortstaffed the day I was in there but the two ladies did the best they could to keep our drink cups full.
