9 Cool Shops in London

"Along an otherwise normal London street is an innocuous storefront for Hoxton Street Monster Supplies, one of the world’s only shops for suppling monsters, bogey men, and creatures of the night with their everyday essentials, however this bizarre store is only a front for a sneaky community writing program.   Inside the shop the shelves are filled with neatly stacked bottles, tins, and boxes of such esoteric ingredients as “Thickest Human Snot,” “A Vague Sense of Unease,” and “Fang Floss.” Warnings on the windows caution such whimsical (or terrifying) rules as only one giant at a time and a kind request that patrons refrain from devouring the employees. However beneath all of this mundane, day-to-day monster shopping, the store actually hides a much more positive purpose as a youth writing and literacy center. Modeled after the various, fantastical theme shops operated by David Eggers’ 826 Valencia, the monster shop is the work of author Nick Hornby’s similar youth writing initiative, the Ministry of Stories. The Ministry is devoted to encouraging creative writing skills in both children and adults providing classes and workshops through outlets such as the Hoxton Monster shop. Luring children into a stop-and-shop for walking nightmares may not seem like the safest option to increase interest in the art of writing, but then again many public schools can be much more frightening." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

An unusual store in London. I love quirky and spooky places like this one. This store is perfect to buy a unique gift for someone else or ourselves. The store is very small but it’s so nice inside. They play vintage music and you can find so many details. It’s a fun experience!

Tiny store Feely well stocked although they didn't have the skull teaspoons even though the inventory said 3. Staff were extremely helpful and happy to chat.

We've visited Hoxton Street Monster Supplies on Feb 15 this year since our daughter has watched the clip several times already within "Die Maus" app on her iPad. The staff in the shop was very polite and we had a nice chit-chat with them about monsters, the ingredients of the goods they sell and so on. From a tourist perspective this was a great thing to do but I doubt that you often visit that store as a local since the stock didn't change that much from the one from the opening. But it's definitely worth a visit and the invisible cat was something really scary.

Cute shop, ideal for Harry Potter fans and Halloween goers. Got some souvenirs and a birthday present! Casually, behind the fire extinguisher, a broomstick 🧹... the shopkeeper was very help- and cheerful 😀

Really nice place with very friendly and funny assistance explaining all the goods they sell. We have seen no monster inside but we met the invisible cat. Of course we did not come around buying some ear wax for our monsters at home.

It's a great charity shop with a "theme"! The theme is that it's a shop for monsters which recently opened doors to humans. But the proceeds of the shop goes to Ministry of Stories~ who help young children with their creative writing. There are other similar themed charity shops in the world as well. Also I am volunteering there as a monster shop keeper so I can tell you it's a fun place and we do some roleplay as monsters with our customers 👹

Yelp
Love this fun store! The staff was so friendly and in character and all of the things to buy were useful yet quirky. I bought some salt from tears of joy for my friends and some pixie dust for myself. Make sure to check the opening hours as it was closed on our last day in London and we missed out on buying some last things :(.

Yelp
'Let's check out Hoxton Street Monster Supplies'... 'What? What are we going to get there?' 'Oh you know, Impacted Ear Wax, a can of Mortal Terror'. So we bopped along to HXMS and it is certainly an experience. The latest in London's curiosity shops. Shelves full of bottles, jars and tubs with serious black and white labels. A shop assistant kindly asks if she can help you, 'are you looking to buy for a monster in particular?'. You could give them a can of fear, 'take two servings of the Collywobbles and call me in the morning'. Maybe you want to step it up to Mortal Dread. Or maybe it's a jar of Banshee Balls* you were looking for? We grabbed some Impacted Earwax, a Bloodsucking lolly and headed on our way. This is a fun place to take kids or to shop for those unusual Christmas presents that are bound to get a laugh when they are unwrapped. It's not too cheap, to get some Salt Made From Tears could set you back 7 pounds. * I'll let you in on a little secret, it's mostly a sweet shop FULL OF TERROR. Beware.
