Can Portland’s Food Carts Survive the City’s Development Boom? | Eater

"A family-operated cart whose staff and student relatives expressed relief when a city agency offered a safe place to store their cart; the family's reliance on cart income for supporting school and household expenses highlighted how critical such small businesses are to immigrant families' livelihoods." - Brendan Seibel

Hands down the best food my husband and I had in Portland and the price was really affordable! We waited around 20 minutes to get our food and when we got it, it was piping hot, exactly how we like it! If we’re ever back in Portland, we’ll definitely eat here again 🫶🏻

Google
Such an amazing food cart. I got crab ragoons, they were delicious and had ample filling. Sesame beef was plentiful and flavorful. Do yourself a favor and pay extra for fried rice. The cook is amazing, nice gentlemen who is a one man show. Be patient, it’s worth the wait. All made fresh to order.

Got the beef and broccoli with fried rice and it was very good and very affordable! Big portion for $15! Definitely will be back!

Garlic Chicken Stir Fry (sub fried rice instead of noodles). Huge and I mean HUGE portions for 12 bucks or so. Absolutely 2+ meals and it’s made to order (not microwaved like that cart at midtown beer garden). Authentic deliciousness on a cold rainy Portland day. I shall return :)

Google
My FAVORITE chinese/cantonese food cart in the whole city. They even have some non-chinese items too. Everything I’ve ordered here has surpassed my expectations and the people who run this cart are always pleasant to interact with. PLEASE if you go here try their almond cookies, I promise you will be hooked on them.

Google
I normally don’t write reviews, however the food here was a 10/10 highly recommend! For the price of either 12.50 or 13.50 I cannot remember but the place had amazing portioning! You have to check it out, and the service was great very friendly!

Google
Such a great place. The amount of food for the price is amazing. It’s like 2 meals worth of food in one container. The flavor and quality are excellent and some of the best I’ve ever had and the owners are so nice and treat everyone so good. Amazing find for me and you have to try this place when in Portland. The best!!!!!

Google
This is a walk-up dinner or lunch place. No seating unless you sit on the curb. But the food is amazing and made fresh. It took a few minutes to get it. But it's definitely well worth it. Not in the best of neighborhood but aside from that. You'll enjoy the food. And if you live here. You already know how good the food is. Try the BBQ Pork Lo Mein or the Beijing Chicken. Plus, the fried wonton is dynamite.

Yelp
I love this place. It's a great go-to Chinese place, always gonna be a good idea. It's always great, hot, made to order food. Everything fried is still crispy and delicious even after we drive it back to eat at home. It's not a popular food cart pod so there's not many people crowding, and we sit in the car while we wait for the food, they can call you when it's ready. It'll take exactly however long they tell you, when I ordered 4 dishes and 2 appetizers while there was a short line it took 20 minutes. Worth the wait. The food is packed full and every dish is great, it's just about personal preference on which is best but I love their pepper salted shrimp. I got it picked up on my birthday & the container couldn't close it was so stacked w/ large fried shrimp. The food is amazing and it's supporting an old couple, go as often as you can for great Chinese takeout.

Yelp
The food was absolutely unreal. The food is cooked fresh and made to order so if there is a little line it may take awhile.

Yelp
1000% worth it. Ordered the chicken fried rice - absolutely delicious and could feed at least 3 people. It's important for me to support local - the owners are kind, competitively priced and quality exceeds competitors.

Yelp
EXCELLENT! Who knew? Looking for really good Chinese food in Portland? Look no farther. I've been searching for a long time for a great Chinese restaurant in the Northwest district. Alas, most have been just okay. Granted, having lived in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, I'm really picky about authentic Chinese, so I was both surprised and amazed when someone recommended this little food cart. Don't be fooled! The place is small (to go only), but the portions are large and the food is awesome. One little sweet old man was the only one taking my order and making all the food, but he is not only kind and appreciative, he's a really good authentic Chinese cook. I ordered four items, beef with broccoli, Kung Pao, chicken, General Tso's chicken, and the Yang Zhou fried rice. Or, numbers #29, #26, #18, & #31. No clue on earth why he also sells french fries. Go figure. But, even with that little peculiarity, everything else is fantastic. I even met someone who orders his wonton noodle soup every week and loves it! It was in a surprising little area with other food carts, but look for the little green to house. You won't go wrong.

Yelp
A hidden gem tucked away downtown. Very friendly staff with great food. Chinese food with great knife work an seasoning. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My dish was a disappointing pad kee mao. The sauce did not seem authentic, more like some tamarind was squirted on top of just ok quality ingredients.

Yelp
My favorite kung pao chicken meal in all of Portland. Egg Flour soup is also delicious! You get a TON of food too! Enough for multiple meals. The couple who works this food truck are really nice and kind. Very hard working too! Sometimes it takes awhile but it's all fresh to order. They also have lunch specials that are a fantastic option for lunchtime! I've been a few times and taken friends here when in town.

Yelp
I found out about this place through the Kuto app. It looks like a nice family business. I sort of chuckled when I saw this food cart with the sign above: the word Huali means exquisite, magnificent, or elegant -- a bit out of place at a rather unexpected place (it is a bit of shady part of downtown, though, but it's near the US Bancorp Tower, the Transit Mall, and the Powell's City of Books, convenient for office workers and tourists alike). Everything is made to order so expect to wait up to 10 minutes especially if there are other customers. It comes in a big container!

Yelp
Cute little stand. The women who runs it so sweet and kind. I've only tried this dish so I cannot say much about the rest but they give HUGE portions.

Yelp
Favorite place to pick up takeout. The owners are super nice and actually make quality food with exceptional portions. I feel full every-time I get food here.

Yelp
Massive portions. Food is very good. They don't cook the battered sesame chicken like everyone is use to. Sesame chicken is not battered, but still good and feels a lot healthier. Overall very good and massive portions. They gave me way more sesame chicken than rice. Plus they are super nice and friendly.

Yelp
This tiny little food truck is home to a chef that serves up delicious food! It's so small that it's a little easy to miss, but once you know it, it'll be hard to forget. Today, we walked up to order and our food was done in less than 20 minutes! It was hot and fresh. Everything was really great and the portions were huge too. Fast and timely service as well. 10/10 recommend if you're looking for a quick bite to eat.

Yelp
I was truly excite to try this place. I took photos to share and promote them. Sadly I barely ate my food. The Yakisoba noodles had an odd off putting taste very little seasoning. I was hoping for flavorful sauced carmalized noodles and it was closer to just out of the package and warmed up. I also got pot stickers pretty sure I ordered spring rolls but... Well I can tell they were housemade tough dough hard to bite through exterior with meh inside. Honestly I don't know how you can screw up Yakisoba noodles but they've found a way.having to throw food away and still hungry two stars is a bit too generous.

Yelp
I stumbled on it, but knew I was at the right place when I saw the line waiting to order from a food truck! I was very surprised at how good the food was; bring a friend because it's a ton of food!

Yelp
I ordered from Hua Li through Grubhub. It was a horrible experience, part of the fault lying with each party. I placed an order for Mongolian Beef with white rice and egg rolls. It was scheduled to take 1 hour, which was a little long, but I've been on the search for a decent Chinese place in Portland and haven't found the one yet. It arrived half an hour late, which means I was delivered cold, greasy food. I opened it up only to realize I'd been served chicken instead of beef. I contacted customer service and was unable to get a refund because I had apparently placed the order for chicken. I checked my order, and it still said Mongolian Beef, just as I had thought. However, if you go back into the interface to order, there is the option to pick a meat, which for reasons unbeknownst to me, defaults to chicken. For Mongolian BEEF. Overall a very disappointing experience for what seemed a promising contender for my go-to Chinese restaurant. I think the food would have been quite good if it were delivered hot and had the rest of the experience not been so tainted already. It was also quite a small portion for $10.25, since it was about half chicken/ veggie mix over half glass noodles. Ordering food by delivery is meant to be a real treat since the costs add up, so that adds to the disappointment.

Yelp
Great friendly service. The food was a great big portion and it was super delicious. Beats any fast food for sure.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the Garlic Stir Fry! Delicious every time. Yellow Curry also great. Fresh ingredients. Friendly staff.

Yelp
The portions and the food are always great here! I love their house special fried rice or their sesame chicken.

Yelp
Very kind wife and husband duo working here. My partner got the bbq pork with rice and broccoli on side. Food came out hot within 7-8 minutes and it was delicious! The husband greeted us and asked how we liked it and later on directed me to the nearest garbage bin with a cheerful smile. All in all, great food from great people. Please show them some love :)

Yelp
This place surprised me. I'm Chinese and have had authentic Chinese food (including travel) and I LOVED the fried rice. The owner was very friendly and I can't wait to go back. It's tucked away in a street and I'm not sure if they get a lot of business but they sure deserve it. Please support! Definitely a hidden gem. 10/10 authentic chinese comfort food.

Yelp
This food truck is ligitamitly great. I'm kind of picky when it comes to Chinese food. If your in pdx this a must stop and eat.

Yelp
Based on the egg rolls (golden rolls) alone and the sweet stand owner alone, this food cart earns 5 stars. The egg rolls were hot and freshly made. On a cold December day they just hit the spot. And you can't beat the price four pieces for $4 bucks!! Definitely coming back to try more of this yummy Thai food!

Yelp
Yummy great Chinese food love this place for good food. I got the salt and pepper shrimp which is my favorite thing to get. This places version of the dish is very good.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service! The food is fresh, packaging great but there is a wait. It is well worth the wait. One down fall is bad flimsy plasticware. Definitely try the place out!

Yelp
I eat at this food truck about twice a month. The food is very fresh and the cook/owner is fantastic. His granddaughter (?) is frequently there to help take orders so he can cook. The service is quick (ten minutes) even with a line of customers. I usually get the Mongolian Beef or Tom Yum soup. The flavors are rich and full of umami. This is one of my two favorite food trucks in PDX.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious! The guy working was very kind and the food was very flavorful. Good portion sizes and very decently priced.

Andrew Y.

Yelp
Maybe it depends on whose cooking but ordered the pad kee mao once and didn't taste right. Seems like it was missing some ingredients in traditional pad kee mao. Also no spice in it. The guy that was manning the food stand was nice though.

Holly L.

Yelp
Food is made fresh upon ordering, service is great. Good food too. It did take a little long to get my order but it was because it was made after I ordered it. I got the spring rolls which were pretty good!!

Adrien M.

Yelp
I love this place, great Thai food! I wish it was in my town, I would always be there. I make a side trip there anytime I'm near Portland! Been a loyal customer for 3 years now. Staff very friendly. You've got to try it!
