"Huaraches Mexican Restaurant opened is third location in early May, according to the Hyde Park Herald. It replaces Southside Ken Chinese Cuisine, which closed suddenly in February after more than two years in business. Huaraches owner Andres Rangel also owns restaurants in Brighton Park and Dunning, where he features the business’s namesake dish. Visiting Chicago with a group of 14 of us stop at this place. We did a great choice, my soup and fresh homemade tortillas i was like WOW and my pineapple drink were delicious! 😋 😋 The service from the waitresses Vicky & Nataly was fantastic. Yes, highly recommend this place!!! 😃🤤😋

The crew is always top notch, they explain to you the menu and make sure you under what you’re buying. I come here often since it’s in my neighborhood. Their prices are reasonable and the quality of their food is great, from presentation to the mouth😂❤️😋

Worth the wait! The food is fantastic and the staff is great. Heads up, they do not serve alcohol and they do not have a changing table.

I had the $teak tacos and it tasted like sausage meat or $omething it had a weird texture and taste. The rice was very flavorful and a delight after eating the $teak tacos. The waiter was very friendly, prompt and the $ervice was great. Unfortunately the food was not it, well the $teak tacos at least. I do want to try another dish another day but the $teak tacos was not it, especially the meat.

Great variety of delicious salsas! The body of the food (i.e. everything but the salsa) was pretty good too. Had a Huarache and enchiladas. A good handful of vegetarian options. Don't need to go super out of one's way for this restaurant, but I would go again.

The restaurant is cozy with a nice atmosphere. The food was excellent. I ordered the Azteca plate with pork chops, skirt stake and chicken breast. My girlfriend had the taco dinner. The meat was tender and flavorful. The natural juices are a must have. Would be better if they had fountain drinks instead of individual cans. Service was fast and friendly. This place seems to be popular with young adult friend groups.

I probably will never try this place again. I wanted to try something new from a long day of work not eating all day and this wasn't it. Service was horrible. If I want with someone of Latin descent I probably won't have got help. She totally ignored me and it was my order. Chips were so hard and stale couldn't eat it 2. Salsa was good just spicy. Neither chicken or steak were seasoned and my order was missing items. I will not return. I don't understand why open a business in a neighborhood where you don't like the people. It was visually nice and clean but no one was there I guess I should've took that as my sign to turn around.

The quality of this restaurant is absolutely abhorrent, from the low quality service to the low to mid quality food. Upon entry, the initial wait time for my family and I to get tended to was an astonishing 25 minutes followed by another 50 minutes after ordering waiting for our food to get served. The service was not entirely bad, but for the most part, they were all lazily working, taking their time, and not tending to their customers; my family waited the entire time to get a refill on our cups of coffee, and not once during our entire 2 hour stay did we get served a refill. The quality of the food was low to mid quality, and you could see that the ingredients were not fresh. The restaurant as a whole was not entirely bad, but I would not recommend eating here as the place is overpriced, and the tips they charge are absolutely crazy for the terrible service they offered. I would not recommend eating here unless you’re going for “the aesthetic”, even then, save your money and eat somewhere else, thank you.

Yelp
Decent Mexican food. Had take out and sit down service. I very much appreciate that they individually wrap tacos in foil for take out. First time I got to eat take out tacos that weren't WET. Sit down service I got flautas. Rice is good. Leftover flautas are a good Bfast. Coke place. That gives them extra brownie points. Glad this is so close to home.

Yelp
First time here got the tacos and Horchata everything was good. Our server was very nice and helpful with the food items. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Very meh. My date and I went here on a Monday night since, to our dismay, Ja'Grill's kitchen closed as we walked in and Thai 55 no longer took dine-in. Huaraches was right next to Thai 55 and open til 11, so we went in. The kid who seemed to be running the place told us to sit where we liked. We wanted the table by the window which was dirty and the kid said, "Yeah fine I need to clean it." What's with the attitude, homie? He proceeded to stroll around the restaurant at a leisurely pace, dropping off checks, chatting with the other worker (who wasn't working, btw) and taking his sweet time. He finally comes over and begrudgingly cleans the table. Then ambled back to grab a couple of menus and nonchalantly drop them off. Nothing irks me more than dismissive service. But since we were hungry and there was no place else to go late on a Monday night, we stayed. The menu was decent enough, had all the traditional Mexican favorites, so I ordered a chicken flautas dinner and a Jamaica Jarrito. He order the steak burrito and a fresh cantaloupe juice. Our food arrived and while my dinner was plated nicely it was rather uneventful. There was hardly any chicken in the flautas and they were dry and unseasoned. My date's burrito looked rather tasty albeit the lack of garnish and accompaniments. Also, I chose not to be all up in his plate like I usually do in dates so I can't confirm if the taste matched the looks. I did taste his cantaloupe juice and it was very tasty and refreshing. That and the guacamole were the highlights of my dinner. . Step yo game up Huaraches. There are of too many amazing Mexican restaurants in Pilsen and in the far eat side that people can and will go to instead of being subjected to this mediocrity. Being in Hyde Park, you have the perfect opportunity to make a name for yourself by delivering better food and better service. I won't be back.

Yelp
This is my GO-TO Mexican food spot when I'm on the south side. I won't even consider anyone else. It's a small family-owned business. The serving size is more than enough to fill up - especially if you're dining in. While the wait times are a bit longer, it's no issue because everything is made fresh to order. I love their pineapple and mango beverages. They use real fruit. As of now, it's BYOB. But I can't wait until they get their liquor license. If the margaritas are of the same quality as their Mexican cuisine, it's going to be amazing! This restaurant will always have a special place in my heart because it's where my partner and I had our first date! :o)

Yelp
What a breathtaking experience coming here and lots of colorful and mind-blowing flavors. If you want to have the most amazing time of your life either after a long day at the Museum of Science and Industry or just a normal typical day. This is definitely a great place to eat, You need to come to Huaraches Mexican Restaurant located in the East Hyde Park neighborhood. Eating at Huaraches took me to another world that i haven't yet experience. The food was fresh and tasted amazing. Upon our arrival, we were able to find available seating right away. They brought us chips and hot home made salsa. I order una refrescante agua de jamaica mediana or Medium Hibiscus cold tea, two steak and one al pastor tacos with everything. Once the food arrived, I was astonished by the side of the tacos, They were huge, they were at least three sizes bigger than a normal taco and full of meat. My first bite was so good, and good is not even enough of a word to describe how the tacos were. With every bite my mouth was experiencing punches full of colorful flavor and taste. The price is average for three tacos and if you are coming from the north side or west side or any where from Chicago, If you're in the mood for some authentic Mexican food, this is the place for you and the drive is worth it.

Yelp
Showed up early for a Dr appointment and wanted Mexican for lunch. Oh my !!! it was SO good. We had the burrito & enchiladas lunch special and took half home to eat for dinner. Wonderful waitress and I found out there's another one in Bucktown closer to me. Thank you

Glenn C.

Yelp
Really, really, really great asada nachos. The guac & asada were perfect. The cheese and the sauce were great, too. Prob my fav nachos I've had!

Rachel W.

Yelp
Traje a mi hija y a mi sobrino aquí después de una actuación y con los estómagos muy vacíos. No hace falta decir que nos fuimos de aquí completamente satisfechos y recibimos un servicio excelente. Hermoso espacio también.

Sonya M.

Yelp
I'd been wanting to try Huaraches for quite some time, but never made it to any of their locations for whatever reason. Finally, one night I decided to order from the Hyde Park location after deciding I didn't want to cook. I placed an order via Uber Eats for two taco dinners. The bill came to about $28 (food only) which was fairly reasonable. We ordered steak tacos on corn tortillas. The dinner included rice and beans. Honestly, the food left something to be desired. The quality of the meat wasn't that great and the rice and beans lacked flavor. The beans were watered down and the lettuce seemed old. Overall, the food just wasn't that good. That was the first and last time I'll eat at Huaraches.

bruce W.

Yelp
The food and presentation is very good except for the steak they use....every bite is gristly. I recently bought the lunch special with 3 steak tacos. I had to spit out every other bite of the steak. Needless to say, I stay away from the steak now. The pork, chicken and shrimp are absolutely delicious. The service is great and the ambience is very pleasant.

Alyssa H.

Yelp
Good food, but about the slowest service I've ever had. Like 20 minutes to get a glass of water and asking two different servers twice each. And I've visited twice now. I tried to do an online order to avoid all that and they were so delayed making my food the delivery person cancelled. I called to follow up and the lady in the phone kept telling me 10 more minutes. Turns out she couldn't understand English and was just making stuff up on the spot to get rid of me. Honestly I'd rather she just have stated she didn't understand and I would've gotten a translator earlier. Wasted a half hour because I believed her the first few times I called. No amount of good food can make up for the slow service/slow kitchen/lack of communication. This seems like such a simple fix! The food and ambiance is great. It's the functional aspects of running a business that are just terrible.

M K.

Yelp
Solid food but super understaffed and slow. Only one waitress for the whole busy restaurant. They also don't serve any alcohol.

Lala T.

Yelp
Corn tortillas freshly made, best I've had outside of LA. The salsa served with the chips was also amazing, house-made with a blend of roasted peppers and a good amount of heat. It isn't a fancy place, but the food was authentic, and this customer was very very happy.

Yelp
We had stopped on 55th because our favorite Thai place is located there. We were surprised that it was only open for take out. We were hungry and parking was paid so we decided to pop into Huraches. Bright, super clean comfortable spot with a very awesome server named Julio. Julio knew the menu and was accommodating to our questions. I had the taco pastor (excellent) and a steak taco (not my favorite but still good). The pastor had soooo much flavor. A little heat, sweet and the accompanying lime was big enough to add the pow to it. My husband had the house specialty, hurache. Large oval masa dough smashed with beans and topped with salsas, onions, sour cream, cojita and his was ordered with chicken. Next time he'd get his salsas on the side because the red was a little hot for a guy who eats on the mild side. It was delicious. We also got a small order of guacamole which will be a large order next time! So good and made fresh. And their tortilla chips were probably some of the best I've ever tasted. I'm not sure why this place isn't packed but it should be. They told us that they cook more southern Mexican dishes and I look forward to try more.

Aliyha H.

Yelp
I must say, the food was delicious! They make their own tortillas and you can tell with each tasty bite. The chicken was well marinated and not over cooked. The aqua fresca was made to order and very refreshing. They are byob so if you're looking for Margs, stop by the store before hand. Service was fast and restaurant was quite for a Tuesday at 6:45.

Mm O.

Yelp
I ordered 2 steak tacos and one steak sope...great flavor, tortillas and sopes made fresh in house to order! I asked for lightly crispy, they were perfect. My cousin ordered the taco dinner, some of the best rice, she raved about it. Julio was super personable, great recommendations!! Great Mexican food in Hyde Park!!

Giri S.

Yelp
We came looking for a bite for lunch before heading to the museum. Glad we stopped by! The staff is very nice and responsive. Food came out very quickly was delicious. We ordered a huarache (arrachera), huevos con chorizo, and some tacos. It was all very tasty and I would say if you're in the area this place is worth a visit. The steak was well seasoned and cooked nicely. Salsas were tasty, tortillas are made fresh.

Yelp
The Restaurant: This location has gone through a couple different restaurants with the latest being Huaraches. The decor is the exact same as the previous restaurant: same tables, same chairs, same. Decor is nothing special. The Food: That food was delicious! The tortillas are HOMEMADE, thick and filling, just like grandma would make them. We ordered a huarache of chicken with mole, and that one dish could have been enough for two people, it was huge! I had the bistec a la Mexicana. The meat was flavorful and the size of the plate was large enough that I had a whole meal for leftovers. We left super happy with the food. We also tried the flavored waters which are made fresh - yummy natural flavoring. The Service: They are BUSY! The two women in the front WORKED LIKE THERE WAS NO TOMORROW! They did not stop once, back and forth back and forth. They definitely need help. There was probably only one cook as the food did take some time to come out. But wow - these ladies are some HARD WORKERS. They did the best they could as fast as they could and for that I am grateful. Don't go if you don't have the time or the patience! Will I go Back? ABSOLUTELY - as long as I'm in no rush.

William B.

Yelp
A nice Mexican restaurant is just what this stretch in Hyde Park needed, and I am pretty optimistic that Huaraches is going to fit the bill. I ordered a huaranche, naturally, and got way more than I bargained for: Good spicy salsas, plenty of steak, unusually good chorizo, avocado, and more all on the signature bean-stuffed-homemade tortilla base. It was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. And also immense: my huarache was the largest one I've ever seen, the size of a medium pizza, and conveniently packed in a cardboard pizza/calzone box to go as well. There was lots of space to eat in, and a nice menu of tasty-looking options, so I'm sure I'll be trying more things on the menu soon.

Robert I.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant, super friendly staff and great lunch specials. Tortillas are fresh and some of the best I've ever had. Excellent quality AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Ill be back.

Julio H.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere, food and service. Very attentive and delicious Mexican food. I recommend this place if you haven't gone.

Shannon N.

Yelp
Delicious, quick, reasonable, and different! I love this concept for a restaurant, as I've often seen huaraches on other Mexican menus but been shy of ordering it. Here, I was able to spy on another customer and figure out how to eat it properly ;) The dishes are loaded up with toppings, including rich cheese and sauce, and plenty of fresh veggie ingredients. They have great lunch specials, and the place was very clean and friendly - a great stop-in for me and my baby. I even fed him some of their avocado and bits of corn tortilla. Would definitely go again!

Mike S.

Yelp
Service was nice, they quickly got my order. The 2 tacos I ordered on the other hand were not what I expected. The tortillas were stuck to the wrappers, the steak didn't have any flavor, I could only eat one of them, it didn't sit well with my stomach either. Again the staff was great but I expect a better quality taco.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Food is good. Consistent taste and presentation. Service is solid. Very nice staff. Prices are great.

Andrea S.

Yelp
Being Mexican in Hyde park is hard because fresh Mexican food is scarce, in my opinion. Because of this, I was excited to try Huaraches. I had a steak gordita and honestly, my expectations dropped when I noticed tomato/lettuce on my food vs onion/cilantro. Unfortunately, the drop in my expectations was right because the food was just flavorless. It was made fresh to order but the flavor just wasn't there. Additionally, the type of steak used in the food didn't seem to be of great quality. Their saving grace is their agua fresca which is like a fruit smoothie- it's always freshly made to order and it's always delicious! The place itself is clean, modern and the staff is welcoming so hopefully, they're able to whip up a little more flavor into their dishes.

Mona G.

Yelp
Great Mexican food and drinks ! fresh juices and horchta are delicious . If you are feeling lazy to juice they have a juicer and a large juice is very affordable. The burritos are huge and filled with fresh indgerdenrs . The burrito is a meal for two days! The chicken soup is also really good and perfect for those days you need something comforting. The food is fresh and you can taste that they take their time making all the components of the dish . Have gotten the food delivered or I pick up my orders and they are always hot , with extra sauces . Customer service is always friendly .

Marc D.

Yelp
Extremely impressed! Bathroom was clean. Was able to order meal and received it in a timely manner. Clerks had a refreshing attitude and smile. They ensured that I received my meal promptly, as I had appointments to attend. I believe fast food should be provided in a timely manner. It's hard to find good customer service!

Brian S.

Yelp
Bucktown hasn't had such good sopes since the closing of El Cid on Milwaukee a couple of blocks north of Armitage. Really nice folks, great food (the al pastor is excellent) and great prices.

Buddy B.

Yelp
Had the taco dinner with ground beef. Very good flavor, cooked with small bits of potatoes and carrots. Real home style cooking. Beans and rice were also good - above average. Homemade green and red sauce was very flavorful. I will definitely go back.

Susan C.

Yelp
I left a previous review on this restaurant. I went back for a second time today and wanted to update my review. I ordered the Carne Asada taco with cilantro and onions and sliced avocado. Their Carne Asada was super moist, and tender, and with their green salsa, it was a home run! They changed their chips, and salsa, and now their chips are thin and crispy, and their red salsa is super spicy, and delicious! I didn't get my waiters name, but he was awesome! I'll definitely be going back!

Hassan A.

Yelp
Had dinner here and food was underwhelming and the bartender needs to find another job since the MoJito was devoid of Mint and Liquor and VERY expensive . Our waiter was polite and helpful and the decor was clean and interesting but based on the food and service I won't go there again,

Ann Marie J.

Yelp
Employees always a pleasure. Absolutely my choice for local quick bite. Taco's are my fave with a homemade tortilla- so it slight thicker than a regular taco place. Screams authentic!

Emmanuel C.

Yelp
me and some friends were in there for a quick lunch because we had to get back to work at a certain time and we also asked the server several times if we can get it to go we ended up getting our food 45 MINUTES later and late to where we had to be

Louise L.

Yelp
Two words: homemade! tortillas!! This was WONDERFUL, i'm obsessed. We had huaraches and quesadillas, both made me want to weep for joy. Add in super reasonable prices (plus lots of weekday specials) and tons of vegetarian options (flor de calabaza!) and I'm telling everyone I know to eat here. Long live Huaraches

Serenity O.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place during a visit to Chicago and it exceeded expectations. Street tacos were bigger than expected. We left *very* full and *very* happy. Everyone was kind and welcoming. Thank you!

Zoë R.

Yelp
The ambiance was a bit confusing, a lot of white and sparkle, old furniture with cracks and rips. The service took a while from when we were seated and never received chips and salsa even after asking. There were three other tables than us and our food took 45min, then the waitress seemed to forget about us until we had to flag her down twice for the bill. We spent almost two hours here. But, the food was decent, dry with some spice.

Venyar D.

Yelp
I agree this is the best Mexican Restaurant in the area. The food is good and the customer service is excellent. Last week I placed a last minute order for a group of 8. They were extremely accommodating and within an hour and half my order (20 tacos ) was ready as promised. Did I mention they make their own tortillas so ... getting this order to me as quickly as they did has earned them 5 stars from me.

Medley T.

Yelp
Food was good prices were good but dinner area was cold so challenge to enjoy the food when your fingertips are cold and the best part was the BYOB

Jeannine W.

Yelp
The food was just okay. Ordered takeout and when I got it home discovered items missing.

Katie G.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday was great! The guacamole was a true winner! Fresh and delicious. Convenient location, at least for us.

Tasha F.

Yelp
I've been twice. I hope service becomes speedier with time. It's the old furniture from Southside Ken's so they did not choose the decor. Someone was complaining about the prices, but they are very reasonable to me. The first time I had shrimp and steak. The shrimp were overcooked and served with skins on. The next time we had quesadilla and burritos. They were both good. Also they have the best horchata I've had in a restaurant.

Jerry C.

Yelp
I have been here only once, but enjoyed it immensely. They have great lunch specials, and I had my "test dish" for Mexican restaurants: chiles rellenos. These were tasty, with a nice breading, oodles of gooey cheese inside, and a toothsome tomato sauce. They came with rice, refried beans, and three nice homemade tortillas. The horchata was the best I've had in Chicago. Portions were ample; in fact, I took one of the chiles home. I hope this place does well in Hyde Park, because I have a feeling I'll be going here a lot. Highly recommended.

Jack G.

Yelp
not much to say other than hands down the best mexican food in this area. BYOB is also great!

Paddy W.

Yelp
Well, we ( 3 ppl) went here last night and we waited nearly 45 minutes for our dinner to be served ...along with all the other tables and Takeout orders that were also waiting. We ordered two chicken tacos, two steak tacos and the three taco dinner with rice and beans. Unfortunately, the food finally were arrived and it was not good at all it was totally tasteless...not seasoning at all on the tacos abs the rice seem to be made straight from the box.we spent $31 that I thought was totally overpriced. Not returning... I could've gone down on Commercial Avenue to my favorite taco place and had amazing tacos for less expensive and a great taste. lostacosndesserts.com

Mayra A.

Yelp
Good eats 6 min walk away from science museum. Meals were good and large plates so you get your money's worth.

Eman A.

Yelp
Lovely new spot, with very friendly and attentive staff! We had the tacos and they were delicious, especially the ground beef and carne asada.

Angelina C.

Yelp
Honestly checked it out to see about a new restaurant in the neighborhood. The prices are extremely high considering the food is mid at best. Almost of all of their flavor relies on their meat. They offer seafood but they up charge you for it. Overall food was bland and the menu is is pretty confusing due to the super cramped menu.

Harold S.

Yelp
Disappointed. Have eaten here several times while service has been good food was poorly prepared and not up to expectations. Chicago has so many great inexpensive Mexican restaurants. This one can't meet those standards.

Annabel U.

Yelp
Reminds me of home cooked meals my wella would make for me. I hope you try it. Staff is so sweet.
