A New Portland Pop-Up Is Recreating Food From Ancient Rome | Eater Portland

"A California-birthed, "Southern-inspired" chain planning to open three locations in the Portland area (KOIN reports). The chain has nearly three dozen locations across several states and is known for its beignets, stuffed French toast, and "N'awlins" sandwiches." - Harry Cheadle

Louisiana Catfish (Bayou Style) – Perfectly fried catfish with Southern-style seasoning. Crispy outside, tender and flaky inside. Crab Cake Benedict – Poached eggs over golden crab cakes, creamy hollandaise, and crispy hash browns on the side. The crab cakes had a stronger seafood flavor than I prefer. Not quite my type of dish

This was a different experience. First time going due to hearing good feedback from others. Iced Caramel Macchiato caught my eye off the bat. Had high hopes for it but the after taste was just weird. Thought it was just my taste buds but as I kept drinking, the taste did not go away. The flapjacks were hard. Definitely not like IHOP. Tried to order just regular Beignets since it was on the online menu but the waitress said they only serve the Mardi Gras Beignets. They were alright. Best tasting item were the waffles. The waffles were had a nice crispy but yet still soft inside. Chicken was burnt unfortunately. Limited kids menu FYI

Google
Loved breakfast at Huckleberry! I had the crab cake with a medium egg, the shrimp omelette, and a mocha — everything was super tasty and fresh. The place has a really chill vibe, and everyone there was super friendly. Great way to start the morning!

Google
This place was really good. I got the Mississippi and the huckleberry lemonade and my friend had the breakfast burrito. The food I ordered had a frozen taste to it. It wasn’t so fresh, but the atmosphere and the waitress was so nice. We went on a Sunday. It was pretty packed the parking was limited. overall it was okay I give it a 6

It was our first time and the food was so good. Loved the muffin. So moist and yummy. I plan to bring my family here when they come to visit this year.

OMG!!! I have never been here until 2 weeks ago and have already been twice!! I just LOVE this place and the staff! The waitresses are sooooooo so sweet and attentive! This is our new breakfast spot! Back again for the 3rd time two years later, and the food and customer service is still the best!! Although this time my potatoes were on the little burnt side, and the eggs were a little watery, and I wanted them scrambled hard.. but everybody’s food at the table looked good and tasted good according to them!

Google
I really wanted to like this place, it's close and the reviews were good. Even the photos of food looked pretty good. When I stepped in, I realized this was a chain restaurant. They were advertising franchises out front, so I became worried but we still decided to eat. Service was good, this was the shining spot. However, the food was not good at all. It came out very quickly (under 5 minutes?), everything was dry and it seemed as if it was old, or prepared a long time ago and reheated. They tried to disguise it by covering it with massive amounts of a stringy weird cheese.

Google
Huckleberry's: Delicious Bites in a Trendy Setting, with Room for Service Improvement I recently visited **Huckleberry's** and was genuinely impressed by their food! The **chicken fried steak and eggs were great**, a classic done right. The **fried green tomatoes are, without a doubt, one of the best things to eat here**—absolutely a must-try. And if you're a fan of Southern sides, the **fried green okra was excellent**. It's clear the kitchen truly shines. The restaurant itself has a **trendy atmosphere**, which makes for a pleasant and stylish dining experience. My only hiccup during the visit was with the service. Even on what seemed to be a slow day, it felt **a little slow and inattentive**. I found myself waiting for basics like my coffee and utensils, which only arrived after my food, and I had to ask the server multiple times for them. A bit more promptness with these details would really elevate the overall experience. Despite the minor service issue, the **outstanding quality of the food makes Huckleberry well worth a visit**. If you're craving some delicious comfort food, especially those amazing fried green tomatoes, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Brought my niece and nephew here for breakfast they absolutely love this place!! It has such an amazing vibe to it very homey Parking is super easy and lots of it They have amazingly huge portions per plate and a wide variety of items to choose from Staff is super nice and friendly they provide a kids menu as well as crayons to color Great for the whole family or even a peaceful self breakfast

Yelp
When we pulled up, we noticed that there was a lot of people waiting, but the weight was not long at all. We were traveling home from Sacramento and just found this place on a Google search. The inside of the restaurant is very cool backwards by you atmosphere. Every time I go to a restaurant, I always watch all the plates coming out that are going to the tables and everything looked amazing. I got the Mississippi scramble and my wife got the banana cinnamon French toast. We both loved it. A big plus as they give you a giant glass jar for your drink. Refill was not needed. I would definitely return and I would definitely try something else cause everything like I said it looked great Hats off to the staff you guys were wonderful I will say the only downside, but not worth losing a star, is the fact that they did not have sour cream

Yelp
Came here with fam for brunch after church for the first time and right when I walked in, I could already tell it had major Louisiana vibes. Gator signs. An alligator here and there. Definitely a fun and unique ambiance. I ordered the Bayou Style Louisiana Catfish and it did not disappoint. Super flavorful and cooked just right. Loved it. The service was solid too. Friendly staff. Overall, a good little Sunday find.

Yelp
Ordered a Mississippi Skillet and was less than impressed. I can't put my finger on it but it just has a strange taste like maybe the skillet they used needs to be washed or replaced. I did order biscuits and gravy as my side which helped because I was able to drench my meal in the gravy. The biscuit they gave me however was just big but very very dry. I get that it comes with the gravy so it won't be so dry but the biscuit was like eating cardboard (figure of speech I've never eaten cardboard). I was just not satisfied and should have spent my money at Denny's.

Yelp
Food 4.5 Service 5.0 On Mother's Day wait was 2 minutes since everyone waiting was a large party of 6 or more, so we were excited that it was only 3 of us for brunch today. Girls ordered Huckleberry mimosas and waters all around was delivered promptly. And then our server, Victoria took our food order: Chicken Fried Steak (wife's standard order of on menu). She was happy with her food and ate more than half her food which is a win in my book, Daughter ordered one of the skillets (I wanna say Jambalaya) which was a generous portion and immediately killed it, leaving no trace of food And I had to be different and order the Catfish Po-Boy with fries. My catfish was fried and seasoned perfectly, the breading was light and crispy which the catfish was moist. I do wish I asked for most spicy aioli and used the hot sauce on the table but the sauce had a nice texture more like a mayo taste with little heat. The fries could have been crispier but being busy on Mother's Day, I'd rather enjoy time with my family than send fries back. Victoria kept our waters glasses full throughout our meal. And though the restaurant was busy, she never rushed us at any time there. We'll look forward to returning...and maybe next time with the entire extended family. LOL SORRY no pics, it was more about family time than the food today

Yelp
The staff was very friendly. The place had a sewage smell like the drain was backed up. The I had the crab cake Benedict. The crab cakes were over cooked as well as the eggs.
google avatar

Krystin K.

Yelp
Food was good but service was slow and our server wasn't very nice at all. Would have been better if they would have been kind. We normally like it here but not sure we will be back after this experience.

Yelp
I love that Elk Grove has some great breakfast restaurants to choose from! Huckleberry's has a nice variety of menu items. The dining room is clean and spacious. And, the staff are friendly. We tried the Crab Cake Benedict, Stuffed French Toast, and Grits, Fruit, and Toast. All were solid choices and done nicely. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly. And, the fruit sauce on the French toast was delicious. We look forward to trying more items on their menu.

Yelp
A great and affordable brunch spot. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place, it is very foresty and homey. Service is fast as well, and our waitress was friendly. I decided to go with the vanilla latte and stacked chicken and waffles. The vanilla latte was perfect and I enjoyed it a lot. As for my stacked chicken and waffles, I noticed the chicken was just a tad bit dry. But other than that the waffles were moist and delicious. It was delicious and I loved all the sauces that were on the dish.

Yelp
I've been here twice, and can confirm the Huckleberry's is a great place for big, American breakfasts with a light New Orleans twist. i say "light," because one of my only critiques of this place is that the dishes i've had have been pretty light on seasoning, which is very much not the case in New Orleans. Otherwise, the portions are generally quite generous, and there's a good variety of classic dishes with Huckleberry signatures. I wish there were more espresso drink options, but I expect most people will want to take advantage of the variety of mimosas anyways. One final note: this place has some of the friendliest servers we've had in along time! If you want to visit on a weekend and have more than 2 people, be sure to call ahead as the wait can be quite long.

Yelp
I haven't been to Huckleberry's since it opened, so I thought I would give it another try. My girlfriend and I got the Crab Benedict. Very disappointing, the taste was less crab and more bread coating. The best part about the dish was the red potatoes. The best however was yet to come. We also ordered the "Beignets" which were a far cry from what I have had in the past. Now I have been to New Orleans to Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter where these originated. These were not even a close approximation, giant round pieces of Dough with more dough than taste. I really liked Huckleberry's when they first opened. Needless to say, I won't be coming back anytime soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Huckleberry's for breakfast with friends. I ordered the stuffed French toast, and it did not disappoint. It was fluffy, golden, and not overly sweet. The portion size was also pretty big for one person! Vibes were chill, service was friendly, and they kept the coffee coming. Solid breakfast spot. I'll be back to try their other items!
google avatar

Yelp
I went with my partner to this establishment. It was my first time ever coming here. It was a; different vibe but it was enjoyable. The environment was quiet and our server Kylie was nice, she was attentive to our table. The food was good but mediocre, I did get just eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast. My partner LOVED his breakfast burrito with the creole sauce on top of it. It was a good southern experience for us and we both enjoyed it so much
google avatar

Chef Will G.

Yelp
Ambiance Rustic chill place. Customer Service Gabriella our server was polite and attentive. Food Chicken fries steak and eggs. Gravy flowed, not clumps. Chicken fried hot and moist. Waffle and eggs good. The eggs were overcooked but I was starving so we ate them.

Yelp
Not my first time at Huckleberry's, but my first time trying the Stacked Chicken and Waffles! 10/10 DELICIOUS! I was craving something salty and sweet, didn't want to have to pick between both, and this was perfectly made for me! I love that you don't have to use your hands and the flavors don't overpower each other, but just perfectly act in sync. The green onions give a freshness to the good bacon, syrup, and butter. The ranch adds just another flavor to the chicken. I was really blown away. The only thing is I don't have a spice tolerance so I took the sriracha aïoli off. I also had a great iced mocha. Great service as always!
google avatar

Alvin Jarod A.

Yelp
Food was good service was even better! Last time I was here I tried their omelette and it was really good. This time I had a sizzling/scrambled like platter but I think I'd prefer the omelette one The ambiance was giving New Orleans and I love it. They have pretty cheap drinks/mimosas as well. I'm definitely coming back to try it.
google avatar

Laura T.

Yelp
Came in today and it was only a 15 minute wait to get seated. And after ordering the food came out quite quickly! The interior is decorated heavily with Nick backs and was deeply influenced by country style items. The booths have a nice sense of privacy for each party. The food and menu selection was not that impressive. The food was average and not that impressive. Highl won't
google avatar

Cher L.

Yelp
I really try to give this particular location a lot of chances. When they mess up it's really bad. But then I go back and I might have a couple of pretty good meals and think they've resolved any quality control issues in the kitchen. And then it happens again. I mean, did that dried cold bacon come from somebody's plate? It's just not good and I know that they can make really good fried green tomatoes because I have had them there but this mess here just happens too often. I just don't understand it. They've got the recipe to be a great place to eat but the inconsistency of it it's just too much for me to wanna spend 20+ dollars for breakfast anymore. Come on guys.

Jason P.

Yelp
I can't figure out why this restaurant was so busy when I was there. I ordered the peach crepes, they were thick like pancakes and covered in what tasted like canned peach pie filling. From now on if I want crepes I will make them at home.
google avatar

Anita R.

Yelp
Food and service was excellent. I went there with Co Worker and friends and was very surprised of how delicious the food was. I would go back again and refer people phenomenal Customer service.

Greg M.

Yelp
The portions were fair but the restaurant is quite busy. Food was good. Got the unlimited option but food unfortunately took a while to come out. Servers were friendly but we had some mishaps getting a reservation and ended up having to wait about 2 hours max

Yelp
Sweet nectar across my lips, hunger creeps nigh my tummy Errant pangs , soothed and kept, my thirst quenched as thoughts surrender Tamed my hunger, yet desire rises, for sweet and savory tastes linger I bow my head, ere swift the smiles, as life's mana slips t'ween my fingers. A soft caress t'ween tongue and cheeks, my heart tamed with life's favor I bow my head and dream sweet bliss, I pray enjoy food's labor Sorry, must have dozed off while holding the menu. The wait actually wasn't so long, but it seems it's always busy here at Huckleberry's The breakfast and lunch is always devine and worth the wait. I could honestly look and study the menu, realistically imagining every dish being served before me. I choose something different every time I come here. Like the famous teacher in Romper Room, I can see everything on the menu appear on my table as though I was looking through the "Magic Mirror". Each flavor a blessing in its own. Stephen really has assembled a wonderful staff. Gabriella, Maddy, Gio, Kiely, Vistoria, Ava , Jaden,Daisy and the other wonderful employees always provide excellent and attentive service. No wonder I come as often as I can to enjoy Huckleberry's fare. The cajun flaire is always appetizing and adds a bit of New Orleans nostalgia. Yep, come on down and dream with me of eating till heart's content. The price is never harsh on the wallet and always a joy to fill the belly. Come early and come often. Bring friends, family, and loved ones. You'll find yourself daydreaming of coming back - to Huckleberry's ! *Please excuse my previous prose. The anticipation of dining at Huckleberry's makes me fondly and joyously delirious to return for more heavenly food.

J W.

Yelp
First time at Huckleberry's and reminds me of being in Florida. Staff is friendly and atmosphere decor of the Bayou. We ordered the burger and scramble breakfast. The muffin was the highlight - served fresh and so big to share with the family. We also ordered the gumbo but that was a big miss - tasted like tomato soup with a bunch of rice and don't recommend it. Everything else was great that we ordered. I will come vback again to try other items on the menu!

Yelp
We were craving brunch food and Huckleberry's is the best we know for it. I got the Cajun benedict this time. It has a small kick for those who like it mild, I would've liked it a bit stronger, but it was still very flavorful. I loved the sausages, which had a more savory flavor compared to the brown sausages I usually see. The yolk spilled beautifully for those who want a nice IG video as well. Service was quick. They were pretty busy, but our server found time to pop by to check on us any time he passed to make sure we had what we needed. There's also a little survey to take if you want free beignets for your next visit!

Jarred D.

Yelp
Decent food not amazing. However the service was above average. Very friendly waitress.

Yelp
When this place first opened, it was the hype of the moment. Lines were long trying to get in for breakfast. I've been here a couple of times and never got the chance to review it. Fast forward today and here I am making a return visit with friends. Food is still pretty solid, the usual breakfast and brunch classics with a cajun/southern flair. Prices have increased a little bit and the place looked empty on a Friday morning. One thing I noticed were the beignets that we ordered. It's not as flaky and doughy as it used to be.it's almost like fried bread dusted with powdered sugar. Plus, the sauces were served separately in little containers before. Now they are all underneath and on the sides of the beignets altogether.

Yelp
The waiter brought a coffee and water that belonged to someone else and there was 3 of us so it took 15 min to bring the rest of the coffees and one of the cups was chipped There was no utensils and they brought our food they forgot my eggs, it to 10 minutes for our utensils. We were using our coffee spoon.

Heather G.

Yelp
Food was great: we had a party of 10 and no one was disappointed. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. We will be back!

Caroline J.

Yelp
Great food, service and ambiance. My husband and I first time visiting it was a great experience
google avatar

Yelp
Passing through we came across this location. Although it was busy, we only waited 5 minutes and we were seated. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the chicken and waffles with my eggs over-medium. It was the perfect portion. I ate it all up. I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff Fast Clean restaurant Reasonably priced Lots of shrimp in the omelette Would visit again.

Yelp
We were looking for a brunch spot after dropping off my vehicle for service and Huckleberry's was nearby. We liked the decor, the cleanliness, and the warm welcome. We were seated right away, given menus, and asked if we wanted coffee. As we looked over the extensive menu, we thought we just might be coming back when we could experience their adult drink portion of the menu! It was too early to give it a try that morning. My wife enjoyed the "French Quarter" French toast and I had the 3-egg and bacon platter which came with hashbrowns and toast. I chose the option of substituting the toast for biscuits and gravy. Great decision!!! The biscuits were light, moist, and fluffy. And there was plenty of gravy! Honestly, if the biscuits and gravy was on their "sides" options, I'd be content with a double order and a Bloody Mary !!! The portions are generous, the food is tasty (especially with some added hot sauce), and the pricing is reasonable. If you're looking to try someplace new for breakfast or lunch, definitely give Huckleberry's a try.

Yelp
We've been to other locations & have always been pleased. The food & service at this location was consistent with our other experiences. Severs & hostess were polite & attentive. Our meals prepared as requested, very tasty and served promptly, which given it was breakfast & we were very hungry was important. The location is rustic but comfortable & good for kids. The quantity of food is very generous. We do have two things that need improvement; the menus themselves were dirty. Both of ours needed a thorough wipe down/cleaning. The bathroom was messy, clean but messy. Getting a spoon seemed to be a challenge and as it turns out it was because the waitress had to clean the one she brought. Finally, given the things we identified as needing attention, there was often two servers & the hostess standing chatting at the front counter the whole time we were there whenever there was a free moment.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday at around 9:30 and we were seated immediately with no wait. I ordered the Dixieland steak melt sandwich and it was delish! I would probably ask for more bbq sauce next time. A bit messy to eat but it's so yummy! I like that they keep a roll of paper towels at each table because I certainly needed it! Lol
google avatar

Herminio T.

Yelp
We had brunch here the other day. The food and service were excellent. The menu was a perfect size. The steak could have been little less cooked for my liking, but I know it can be hard on the thinner steaks. My kids enjoyed the pancakes and my wife was happy with her eggs Benedict. We went during the week, and there was not as much of a wait time. The ambiance was just right.
google avatar

P B.

Yelp
Was not impressed with this location. It took 40 minutes for our to-go oder to be ready. Ordered a hot latte and after all that waiting, they fixed us a iced latte. They replaced it with a hot latte and it was luke warm. Asked for egg white omelet and sodnt get egg whites. It was hard, dry and the cheddar cheese was a un-melted clump of cheese. The potatoes needed to be seasoned. Although it was a busy restaurant, I will not return to this location. Staff was nice.

Anonymous U.

Yelp
I visited Huckleberry's with a group of six at 9:30 AM. The place had some customers, but it wasn't overly crowded. However, we were informed that there was a wait time of an hour and a half! That's quite a lengthy wait to inform your customers about, so we decided to go somewhere else. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you're prepared for a very long wait. Also the front 3 hostess were not friendly.

Yelp
They just fired Steve in Elk Grove...a fantastic manager for 5 years & a Purple Heart recipient...He was such a good manager that his employees walked of the job that day and 8 of his 12 employees ultimately quit...all to lower overhead...crap owners who don't care about employees...I'm going back to Black Bear Diner...This franchisee owns Huckleberry's in: Elk Grove, Benicia, Fairfield, Napa, Santa Rosa & Bakersfield...Don't go there!!!

Yelp
Our server was Jaz again he's awesome. We decided on having breakfast. My husband ordered the Louisiana grilled Catfish & scrambled eggs with veggies I decided to order the same which came with French bread. Oh my goodness the fish was cooked to perfection it was so good my husband ordered another grilled cat fish. We definitely will be back.

Lisa A.

Yelp
We used to love this place! However the last time we were there our was a very different experience. The servic was slow, the staff was completely different and the food was mediocre at best. The portions were not at all what they used to be, the food doesn't taste the same and even though the staff was friendly, they slow and by the time we got our food it was cold. Im not sure, but I'm guessing they are under new management or ownership. Sadly, we were so disappointed that we probably won't be returning. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, idk.

Yelp
We love Huckleberry, but unfortunately, this location did not meet the standards of our usual Huckleberry in Yuba City. Every time we visit the Yuba City location, the experience is consistently good, but this one was disappointing. My crab cake looked presentable but didn't taste as good as expected. We always enjoy the Huckleberry biscuits and gravy, but this time, they fell short. We arrived around 9 AM, and while the gravy was good, the biscuits were hard. We returned them, but unfortunately, they were still tough. The Louisiana dish was also an issue; the potatoes were over-salted. I believe it should be up to the customer to add salt as needed. Additionally, I tried the caramel macchiato for the first time, but the coffee machine was broken. The manager managed to fix it, but the drink ended up watered down and didn't match the enticing pictures. Overall, this was our first disappointing experience at Huckleberry. The service of the waiters was very nice and polite. So I appreciated that and make up for the food. The place was nice and clean.

Ellyn C.

Yelp
First time there! Daisy was our server and she was on top of it. Chicken waffle was excellent. Build your own omelette with great potatoes was delicious. Blood Mary is very good.
google avatar

Nina L.

Yelp
I have visited huckleberry's several times and usually order the Tom's scramble. It's what keeps me coming back. The house made biscuit is soft and fluffy. You can also swap out the scrambled eggs for fried egg. The only issues are the long waits for a table, especially on weekends, with the crowds of other people waiting inside by the front door. Once seated, the food usually comes out fairly quick, yet it's always cold or room temp at best.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Great food and great service. The menu is unique and delicious. I definitely recommend you give it a try.

Jude D.

Yelp
Customer service to me not good when you don't have cash. You cannot assume everyone has a credit card. Or that they want to use it for a meal. If you serve breakfast, prepare to have cash on hand from the night before. I know things are different today but that was a negative 'no we can't take cash'. He didn't get a to go box for his biscuit and accidentally left it on the counter which made him more sad (snap)

Yelp
My friends and I were visiting from SoCal and wanted to grab brunch before our long drive down, and we decided on Huckleberry's...and what a tasty and filling spot! We came in around noon on a Monday and had a short wait to be seated. All the servers we interacted with were more than friendly, accommodating, and so helpful! I wasn't feeling super hungry, so my friend and I split a garden omelet with a huckleberry muffin. The omelet was tasty and just what we expected, but this muffin was so moist and flavorful. 10/10 would come back just for the fresh muffins! We also ordered a side of fried okra that we shared with the entire party. These were so well made! Crispy and crunchy, and without any of the slimy texture that okra can be known for. Overall, this is a very solid comfort-cajun-themed diner with great service and flavorful plates. This definitely filled us up for our long drive back down toward LA. What a great gem!

Yelp
Friday, 7/07/2023 - My friends and in went to Huckleberry's for breakfast. Address is 2745 Elk Grove Blvd #250, Elk Grove, CA 95758. We arrived at 8:30am. There was no line and no wait. As soon as we arrived, we were seated right away. My review on this location... Pros 1) plenty of parking when we arrived. 2) as I mentioned above, we got seated right away. We were seated close to the door. There were 6 of us. 3) tables, chairs, dishes, utensils, cups were clean. 4) all of our foods were pretty good. Except.... 5) water tasted good. No funky or metal taste. 6) my GFs like their meals as well 7) staff was nice and checked in on us. She even took our group photos! 8) bathroom was clean. Cons 1) they Huckleberry muffin was pretty tuff. 2) no other cons Conclusion I like this restaurant. Breakfast was great. Staff was nice. Restaurant Clean. Parking was easy. Parking is right in front of the door to go in restaurant. Clean area. I'd go here again. But go early. I went to the other Huckleberry's on Micron Avenue for brunch and they are busy but super nice!

Yelp
I enjoy the menu. I'm not sure if we dined on a bad day for the place. But waited 5 minutes to be recognized we are patrons Person says sit where you want and walks away. Another 5-7 minutes for menu. I ask if there's a senior menu they provide us with 3. We wait another 5-7 minutes for someone to come by. I ask for 5 waters and a coffee. We start to order. The waiter says. Where did you get senior menus? We discontinued those 3 months ago. We regroup order. Wait 15 to 20 for food place is half empty. They serve the other 4 in my group. Forget about my meal until we remind them 10 more minutes later. So, do I recommend this place. I always try most places at least twice in the event odds an off day. In this case I can't recommend it unless your on way to airport and you want to jump on I-5 25 minutes to sac international Good luck
