I finally had a free Saturday to check out the local "Hockey Bar" in Canton. Rumor had it they played hockey on the TV and they had a good beer list. So we trucked on down. Upon entering it was pretty empty, most likely because it was early afternoon, but there was a hockey game on and no one was at the bar watching it! WHAT!? No hockey fans in sight. Disappointing, but oh well, moving on. We didn't really know what to do when we walked in because no one greeted us so we just sat at the bar. We did notice that there were open tables in the back of the place and a couple of high tops surrounding the bar. We snagged a beer menu and began to peruse. Upon first glancing over the beer menu, nothing really stood out to me, which is fine because I usually have a few beers in my head that I want to try and unfortunately this place had none of them. There were a lot of standard issue beers on there, Dogfish 60 Minute, Celebration, Heavy Seas Brews, Guinness, Boddington's, Lagunita's etc. However, there were a few Belgium brews on the list that I have never heard of before. To start I went with the Oud Beersel Framboise. This beer was a little disappointing because it was way too sweet for my taste buds. So, onto the next one, De Ranke Pere Noel. This was another Belgium and this one was much better. A little less sweet and a little more tart. So while we were sitting just looking over the menu and enjoying our brews we realized that the music was REALLY loud and it gradually kept getting louder. There were maybe 7 people at the bar and couple people were in the back restaurant part so no need to blare music. But, you literally had to yell at each other to communicate. At least the music they were playing was ok and tolerable but I would expect them to have the sound of the hockey game on, being they are a hockey bar, wrong.
But then all ill thoughts were forgotten when I ordered my final beer, the De Struise Tsjeeses. This was probably the best beer I have ever had in my life. It was so complex. At first it was sweet, almost too sweet; but as I drank the beer it almost became more and more sour tasting. It was unreal. It was so good I almost started weeping right there at the bar. I immediately jotted down my thoughts on this beverage in Evernote so I would not forget! I will never forget! I looked up the brewery and found that it was only a seasonal brew (SAD!) and I noticed something else, they misspelled the name of the beer. So this is a beer bar that misspelled the name of a Belgium beer?? That is not paying attention to detail and embarrassing if you ask me (See photo evidence). Is it picky of me, yeah; but if you want to be a top notch beer bar you need to get your product right!
Overall, I will come back here. I did not try any of the food because nothing really stood out to me so maybe next time. It looked like it was a pain to get food if you were not seated at the bar. People behind us were coming up to the bar and ordering food around us. Sort of annoying but oh well. The 2 bucks off of draft brews is nice, however if I may make a suggestion to please turn the music down, these beers you serve are strong and meant to be enjoyed over some conversation, similar to a wine. If that is what your plan is, you may want to avoid here because my voice was definitely cracking by the time we left.
