Spring Gardners Might Run Into Seed Shortages Amid the Pandemic | Eater

"A New York–based seller of heirloom and open-pollinated varieties, notable for the artwork that adorns its seed packets, has seen demand surge well ahead of the usual spring peak. To prevent overselling and shorten long delays experienced last year, the team converted to a new inventory system that tracks packed seed and improved turnaround to roughly three to seven business days from the multi-week waits previously. Leadership sees the sustained interest as more than a temporary spike and an indicator of potential social change around home food production." - Lisa Held

My husband and I found Hudson Valley Seed Company seeds at a local nursery last winter and have since purchased many, many packets of seeds online and additionally visited the nursery twice. All the plants we've purchased from them have absolutely thrived. Their gardens are beautiful to visit and the staff is so friendly and helpful. It is our new go-to nursery for a large, backyard garden. Really can't recommend them enough!

We enjoyed the Tomato Fest held at the Hudson Valley Seed Company. After being familiar with their beautifully packaged seeds, it was a nice opportunity to visit their store, facility, and beautiful gardens. We bought some seeds and new gardening tools. Tomato Fest was so fun with tastings and growing information and has so much potential. I hope they will have another one.

2025 update: I counted this morning and ALL 30 BULBS SPROUTED!!! Can’t wait until they bloom!!! So excited about my saffron bulbs! They were delivered in September as the company stated. I know they said that you could potentially get a harvest in the first year, but I was a little doubtful. However, today I went out and picked some saffron threads!! I am usually super skeptical about ordering from online companies since you never know. But do not hesitate to order from this company! The bulbs are quality and the instructions were perfect. I think about half of the bulbs sprouted from September to now, (I only pictured some of them but I bought 30), but I’m confident that they will all come up this spring. Thank you Hudson Valley Seeds for some wonderful saffron bulbs!!!

I love this company ☺️ Their art packs are amazing. Last year I asked about butterfly pea seeds and they didn't have them. They were nice enough to recommend another company who did carry it. I came back again this year and they had them in stock with a beautiful art pack! I think I just made it in time for them to start carrying it. They also have a nursery section in a large white tent.

What a wonderful experience! Beautiful space and worth the drive to get these little seeds that will become our summer bounty!

Seeds and dahlia tubers under perform compared to every other store I've purchased from. I multiple 4 dahlia tubers from them last year and only two grew, with each barely producing a couple flowers. I have never had this issue with any other store's tubers. Similarly, I ordered a bunch of seed packets last year, all of which said you could direct sow. I got a few zinnias to bloom but otherwise nothing germinated. When I wrote them, they said it was because I should have started indoors, which is in direct conflict to the directions offered on their site. They offered me a credit in response, which was nice. The seeds I bought with their credit are faring no better this year. I used the winter sowing method, putting them in plastic containers outside starting in Feb, with the idea being they function as mini greenhouses. All seeds I bought are compliant with this method. And lo and behold, my seeds from every other brand are doing really well and sprouting! Almost nothing from the Hudson Valley Seed packets. Such a disappointment, again.
