Spring Gardners Might Run Into Seed Shortages Amid the Pandemic | Eater

"A New York–based seller of heirloom and open-pollinated varieties, notable for the artwork that adorns its seed packets, has seen demand surge well ahead of the usual spring peak. To prevent overselling and shorten long delays experienced last year, the team converted to a new inventory system that tracks packed seed and improved turnaround to roughly three to seven business days from the multi-week waits previously. Leadership sees the sustained interest as more than a temporary spike and an indicator of potential social change around home food production." - Lisa Held

2025 update: I counted this morning and ALL 30 BULBS SPROUTED!!! Can’t wait until they bloom!!! So excited about my saffron bulbs! They were delivered in September as the company stated. I know they said that you could potentially get a harvest in the first year, but I was a little doubtful. However, today I went out and picked some saffron threads!! I am usually super skeptical about ordering from online companies since you never know. But do not hesitate to order from this company! The bulbs are quality and the instructions were perfect. I think about half of the bulbs sprouted from September to now, (I only pictured some of them but I bought 30), but I’m confident that they will all come up this spring. Thank you Hudson Valley Seeds for some wonderful saffron bulbs!!!

What a wonderful experience! Beautiful space and worth the drive to get these little seeds that will become our summer bounty!

I love this company ☺️ Their art packs are amazing. Last year I asked about butterfly pea seeds and they didn't have them. They were nice enough to recommend another company who did carry it. I came back again this year and they had them in stock with a beautiful art pack! I think I just made it in time for them to start carrying it. They also have a nursery section in a large white tent.

Seeds and dahlia tubers under perform compared to every other store I've purchased from. I multiple 4 dahlia tubers from them last year and only two grew, with each barely producing a couple flowers. I have never had this issue with any other store's tubers. Similarly, I ordered a bunch of seed packets last year, all of which said you could direct sow. I got a few zinnias to bloom but otherwise nothing germinated. When I wrote them, they said it was because I should have started indoors, which is in direct conflict to the directions offered on their site. They offered me a credit in response, which was nice. The seeds I bought with their credit are faring no better this year. I used the winter sowing method, putting them in plastic containers outside starting in Feb, with the idea being they function as mini greenhouses. All seeds I bought are compliant with this method. And lo and behold, my seeds from every other brand are doing really well and sprouting! Almost nothing from the Hudson Valley Seed packets. Such a disappointment, again.

HVS is my go- to seed company for the last 6 seasons. Great quality and consistently good germination. Love the heirloom varieties they offer and that many are adapted to our region. Have also had great success with all the bulbs and garlic I've purchased. I start hundreds of plants from seed each year and have never had anything from them fail!

If you care about local, sustainable, and ethical farming, choose Hudson Valley Seed Company! We have a small homestead and have been ordering seeds from Hudson Valley Seed Company for years. They are deeply committed to protecting the diversity of crops which thrive in the New York and New England area. Their seeds have extremely high germination rates and we have been thrilled with the amount of produce we get out of our rocky, clay-filled Connecticut soil. Also, for those who like to "put food by," their catalog clearly states which varieties store well in a larder versus those that don't keep. We enjoy fresh parsnips, carrots, turnips and celery well into spring from the seeds we planted the previous year. And be sure to order the gorgeous art packs which support local artists!

**2/20/2023 update. The company did reach out and went above and beyond expectation to address the situation. I didn't want or expect anything as originally this was my error, I just wanted to get across that customer service could be a tad more empathetic with their approach. I do want to say that these would make amazing wedding favors (and I am highly planning on reordering for my wedding n bulk later in the year).** 5+ stars for the spectacular and vibrant art covers for the seeds. Colors are vibrant! I love them! But 2 stars for customer service. I ordered 13 seed packets as gifts for a few friends and was so sad when I realized that one of the shishito seed packets purchased was not the art packet style. I reached out to their customer service (yes, I mistakenly purchased the non art version) and was told I'd be responsible for the return shipping and new shipping. I replied asking if it was possible to just purchase the art cover since I already had the seeds. The customer rep was very short/blunt and didn't provide any alternative solutions... just told me to reorder. The customer service could certainly be worked on. The difference in the art and non-art versions was a whole 50 cents ...and having to pay an extra $10+ to get the one art cover piece wouldn't be a reasonable cost for me. I know, again, entirely my mistake. I really wanted to support this local business and love their art concept... but they have less than desirable customer service.
