What a gem to find out in the country! It's not unusual to find a convenience store out in the country, especially just off a super slab, but there aren't many that can boast being on the National Register of Historic Places. That's because it's been there for...decades and decades! It's been there since 1911, to be exact.
At one time, a general store could be found in almost any rural area, serving the farmers in the area. After WWII, with better roads and better access to larger communities, general stores began to fade into oblivion, often demolished to make way for a supermarket. Huff's has stood the test of time, and although it appears to be an anachronism it is actually a modern convenience store and gas station that pays homage to its past and maintains its unique position in time and space.
The interior of the building has not been modernized and proudly sports original shelves, ladders on metal tracks, display cases, and tongue and groove wainscoting on the ceiling and walls. Some shelves are populated with historical packages while most stock product that is actually for sale. The north section of the building contains a small balcony which is reached by original stairs with newel post and square balusters. And there's no modern rest room, in fact, there's no rest room inside at all!
That factoid aside, it's still a modern store, including an ATM, walls lined with coolers offering soft drinks and beer, and all the other stuff you'd expect to find in a convenience store. Gas islands outside offer all you need with modern pumps. Rest rooms? Porta-potties out behind the gas pumps.
Hungry? Order a homemade sandwich, but you better be plenty hungry! Huff's Store doesn't serve wimpy, plastic-wrapped, pre-made sandwiches from some remote portion-controlled kitchen. No siree Bob! Huff's sandwiches are make to order and they're about the size of a Buick. If I had ordered one, I'd still be eating from it as I write this review, a week later. Seriously. Be hungry or don't bother.
Huff's is just off I-840, a few miles west of I-65. Look for the Marathon logo on the blue info sign. It's well worth the side trip off I-65 on your way to whereever. Go there. You'll thank me later.
