The Hughenden | Best places to stay in Sydney

"Long before the term ‘boutique hotel’ entered the language there was The Hughenden – a charming country villa located in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs. It’s the sort of place that wealthy graziers might have once used as their city address. A makeover has brought it into the 21st Century, with modern bathrooms, stylish interiors and the latest digital gizmos. Some of the rooms are truly hobbit-size, while the grander suites offer open fireplaces and kitchenettes. For Victorian charm Sydney-style, The Hughenden is in a league of its own. The location is central and convenient – half way between downtown Sydney city and Bondi Beach in the other direction, easily accessed by bus or taxi. If want to be somewhere quieter, more genteel, out of the main city hubbub, yet close to all of the main sights, this is a great choice. " - Mark Chipperfield

Rooms are basic but have tele and AC.  Minibar is reasonably priced.  Nice to see decent wine glasses.  Beds are comfortable.  There's a bit of street noise at night.  Breakfast (range of ham & cheese toasties and that kind of stuff) plus tea of coffee is included.  Been there before and would stay again.

I often stay here when I’m in Sydney. Great central location, easy to get around via bus & train or walk from here. Comfortable rooms (pet friendly!) |Oxford St around the corner & Woollahra Main Street just a few minutes away.

Stayed 2 nights, chosen for the close proximity to the entertainment quarter. The manager was amazing, communication clear and concise. Room was very comfortable, included breakfast a great portion size, coffee top class. Will definitely be back. Very homely and comfortable.

We stayed at the Hughenden Hotel for one night only and had a great stay. Such a charming place. Our room was small, but so cute and neat! I had a great nights sleep as the room was quiet and very dark! Bonus is a lovely pizzeria right down the street. Was delish! The included breakfast was wonderful as well. The location is great for football games at Allianz Stadium (only ten minutes walk away). My only suggestion would be to send guests the code for the parking gate if they have booked parking. Would just make it easier on arrival as there isn't anywhere to park temporarily while you check in. But, overall a great stay! We will stay again!

Always pleasant but this grand dame needs an upgrade. Stayed in Room 15 this time and it’s got poor lighting and is noisy as it’s on the parking lot side. Described as a sweet but very uninviting with ironing board propped up next to the sofa in full view. Inelegant I suppose. Breakfast included always simple but nice and good coffee. But for the cost it needs a bit of a game life. Hall light completely out too so maintenance required.

Fantastic place for short stay. Loved the atmosphere and breakfast included at their little cafe. ( Very good too!) Helpful staff. My room was in an outside wing..so a little strange. And pretty noisy with road traffic etc. But generous size and all amenities you need. Would go for an inside room next time and will definitely be back. A little gem and homey as others have said. Big thumbs up.

I stayed here a very long time ago around 2002... so more than 20 years ago and long before you could do a review. Back then, I felt as if I was staying in a historical style hotel, the owners so nice, the room I had was small though actually perfect as outward facing and very quiet. I'm not sure if it is the case now........... Though I was able to bring my little maltese with me..... I only stayed either one night or two, though the hotel left such an impression, that I looked it up again today to see if it still exists, and it does to my surprise......... I look forward to booking in the coming months. What a wonderful experience I had.....

This is a gem. Surely it's heritage listed. Real Olde World charm. Beautiful neighbourhood. Make sure you book a car park though, parking can be tricky.

Yelp
I thought they would show some compassion and let me cancel my room because of the smoke from the bush fires but no I am going to be forced to go to Sydney and stay in a hotel. No hotel should have anon refundable policy (And don't claim it is because of velocity, you decide your fairs)

Yelp
Hotels in Sydney are a dime a dozen. There's so many to choose from and they all look pretty much the same. Except for this little boutique hotel in Woollahra called The Hughenden Hotel. It's a Victorian Manor rich in history and beautifully restored to give their guests something different from today's normal hotel offerings. There are marble fireplaces, reading lounges, Victorian dining rooms, a grand staircase, and even art exhibitions. They offer warm, personal service that adds to the charm of the place and the pleasantness of your stay. And if you're wondering how much it costs, their rates are very affordable. You get great value for your money AND you have a one-of-a-kind hotel experience. So if you're thinking of visiting Sydney, The Hughenden Hotel should be your hotel of choice.
