We went here on a whim and were so happy we did. The food was fantastic. The service was top notch the woman serving us (possibly the owner) was super friendly and helpful. Everything came out hot and fresh. I wish I would have taken pics of the food but I forgot. I did get a picture of the margarita flight that was delicious. My daughter got a strawberry smoothie and it was also delicious. All of the drinks tasted like they had fresh fruit in them and the delivery was beautiful. Price was reasonable. I would definitely go back if I was in the area again.

Google
Hugo's was my first date after baby #3. All I wanted was Mexican food and I am so glad we chose Hugo's. The food was exceptional, with top-quality meats that were perfectly prepared. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The margaritas were soooo smooth, perfectly sweet, and incredibly refreshing...and they have the cutest vibe both indoor and outdoor, we ate on the patio, it was so serene.

Was nice to sit down and enjoy some lunch. The food was okay. A little bit on the bland side but was still good. Was vegan friendly.

No better place for two vegans and a vegetarian who wanted Mexican food! We had a reservation, but really did not need one on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly and the chips and salsa were put in front of us. The chips were homemade I believe and the salsa was spicy. We ordered a larger bowl of guacamole to go with that as well. The atmosphere is nice, colorful and decorated the only thing missing is a piñata. The service was wonderful from the owner I believe. She talked to us for a while about some of the ingredients in the food. The menu has about 1/2 devoted to vegan and vegetarian items. Many proteins are supplied in vegan form for the dishes. Many different forms of beef can be obtained in vegan versions. That is a really nice thing when you’re eating Mexican food. It is much appreciated. A variety of the Mexican dishes are made with vegetables, including eggplant, mushrooms, and many other things. Vegan cheese is available as well. The three of us had different entrées. One, who was not that hungry had Spanish rice, black beans, and pico de gallo. Said it was all wonderful. Second person had a quesadilla with soy chorizo and vegan cheese. Also delicious. Third entrée was an enchilada trio, vegetarian with one cheese, enchilada, one tofu, enchilada, and one bean enchilada. One of them had a wonderful authentic molé sauce with cocoa, roasted peppers And not sure what else, but it was terrific. A cold Modelo Negro on top rounded out the dinner. There are many desserts, including both vegan and non-vegan forms of rice pudding. Would definitely come again prices are very reasonable.

We bumped into this restaurant and decided to give it a go. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Food was very good too: great combo food/price. I loved the veggie and vegan options 🤤

Google
What a wonderful place! Let’s start with the fact that the staff is wonderfully friendly and the service fantastic. Add to that the plethora of Vegan options on the menu (literally dozens), and the dishes bursting with flavor, and you have a perfect place for vegans and non-vegans alike. We had the tofu enchilada with vegan cheese, a pineapple tamale, and birria taco made of jackfruit and mushrooms (it was a daily special). Everything was stellar and the margarita flight is also highly recommended. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Google
My wife and I had a nice date night at Hugo’s. The atmosphere was laid back yet still had a great vibe, and the service was outstanding. The food was very good. I’m pretty picky about my California burritos, but this was hands down the best I’ve had. It was light, the meat was top-quality, and every bite was packed with flavor. The drinks were smooth and beautifully presented my wife loved them, and they tasted even better than they looked. On the non-alcoholic side, the blueberry lemonade was my favorite—I even took one to go. Oh and leave room for dessert.

Google
We came here after walking by a few times. The staff were very friendly and knew their menu inside out. The horchata was amazing (my daughter said it tasted like Christmas!) and we were able to order bespoke burritos with no problem.

Yelp
Just went here for the first time with my wife. Had one of the best margaritas we've ever had. Then shared the enchiladas and carne asada quesadillas. Everything was super delicious. House made red and green salsas were a great addition. Server was nice and helpful. Plenty of seating and space so didn't feel over crowded. Highly recommend

Yelp
I had medium-high hopes for this place. The inside is so fun and cozy, and my server was really cool. I was able to sit anywhere, and was provided with their regular and monthly specials menu. I'm not vegan, but I seriously love vegetables, so I was excited to see that they have a really extensive vegan/vegetarian menu. However, it definitely feels like it was added just to appease vegans, not treat them. I tried a sweet potato taco & a shiitake taco, but both were lackluster; I brought them home and reheated them on the stove with seasoning and salsa I got to go. Super not worth it. I also got a chicken tamale; it was generic, but fine. Sadly, I won't be back.

Yelp
The vegan california burrito: YUM :) I recommend! My brothers enjoyes there meat cali burritos too... will definitely be back to try the other vegan burrito options. Service was quick and ambiance is cozy/cute with a great outdoor section. Perfect place to come if you have both meat eaters and vegans.

Yelp
We've been eating here since this place was Ranchos. We eat here less and less each year. The food is good, but the service is never quite right. There is a tall server. He must be part of the family. He has worked there forever. He couldn't care less about his job. He ALWAYS messes something up. My wife asked for red sauce on her enchiladas and got green sauce. He never checked on us during our meal. My water was never refilled. The place wasn't very busy. Tall dude, I only left you a seven dollar tip because you're terrible at your job. I hope you shared it with the kitchen who makes up for you.

Yelp
This place is great! We meant to check it out for a while now and were finally in the area and dined in. We sat on the patio with our dog. The service was super friendly and attentive. We are vegan and they have a full vegan menu which is amazing. They have pretty natural substitute for meat which is great! They used tempeh for the vegan fish tacos and mushrooms for the vegan birria tacos. We also had loaded nachos and they even have vegan cheese. Everything was fantastic. Their refried beans are a dream - so creamy and full of flavor! This is a great spot for vegans to go for authentic mexican food and to bring their non vegan friends to. We can't wait to be back!

Yelp
What a little gem! We were looking for vegan options while staying with a friend. This was a good balance of vegan and non-vegan options that our group could all enjoy. The vegan menu was extensive (a whole page plus some items embedded within their regular menu). Hubby ordered the vegan California burrito and said it tastes every good and authentic. I ordered the vegan carne asada fajitas. The corn tortillas were very good and not cheap and It was quite decorated to look like an authentic Mexican joint with a giant piñata upon entry. There is a small lot in the back with shared parking. Service was friendly and staff was able to quickly answer questions about vegan items. The busser was also very considerate and attentive to our table. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Stumbled in out of the heatwave and smoldering sidewalk to find refuge in a cool dark yet cheerfully decorated restaurant. Everything was fresh and delicious. Also on the light side which was perfect for summer dining. Chips and salsa plus guacamole were on-point! Loved the Jamaica- so refreshing! I had chili rellenos and it was fabulous. They offer a large menu of vegan items as well. Great place!

Yelp
Hugo's was a disappointment all around. The service was slow, forgetful, and icy. The chicken fajitas lacked flavor on the rubbery meat that was congealed together somehow. The red onions and green peppers were also undercooked and flavorless. Carne asada felt old and tasted burnt. The only good thing was the ceviche tostada. Maybe we came on an off night/week, but this place does not deserve 4 stars.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
I love how Hugo's caters to vegetarians and they've always been nice, but unfortunately the last 2 times I've gotten it, it has been VERY bland. I'm speaking specifically to the tortilla soup - on both occasions. I ordered it today and it had very little flavor, on top of that I found a wrapper in the soup :(
google avatar

Nancy I.

Yelp
I have found my new beach meal - their Carne Asada Torta is a great option when you aren't feeling like a burrito on the sand. The meat was flavorful and tender. Paired with the pineapple agua fresca, it was the perfect summer lunch. I should also mention that they are thoughtful and have developed a vegan burria taco and offer a steamed veggie plate for our vegan friends. The beans are blended smooth and made without lard but are still packed with all the flavor. The giant tostada looked tempting with the tortilla fried in the shape of a bowl and filled to the brim. They have both inside and sidewalk and patio seating options. If you opt to sit there, they will bring your agua fresca in a cute glass cup that resembles a bee hive. It family run and the mother daughter duo were both very nice and attentive.

Yelp
AWARENESS: While in San Diego a few weeks ago, the wife had a hungering for Mole Enchiladas, something we've not seen where we currently live. As she scanned Yelp, she came across Hugo's and after looking at their extensive menu and the great pictures posted by fellow yelpers, we decided to make the short drive from Point Loma to the area called Sunset. NARRATIVE: Arriving at Hugo's, we found the place not busy at all, id say I found it; quiet, quant and clean. I was also happy to find they had an outdoor patio area where we could sit with my furry friend. Service was fast and out meals made it to our table with 10 minutes. As mentioned above, the wife ordered their Mole Enchiladas and since I wanted to try the Enchiladas myself, I order the trio. One with Mole, one with green sauce and one with a red sauce. I also thought the Seafood Chile Relleno sounded interesting so, I order that too. SCENE: Hugo's Cocina is located Sunset Cliff's Blvd. in the Sunset area of San Diego, between Niagara and Narragansett Avenues. EVIDENCE: Even though I enjoyed my Enchilada Trio meal and their sauces, the winner has to go to the green sauce. The accompanying rice was good but, I opted for black beans which I thought lacked flavor. The Seafood Chile Relleno was... Not exceptionally good but, not bad either. Let's just say for argument; it was different. RECOMMENDATION(S): If I were in the area and wanted some decent Mexican food, I would return. But San Diego is filled with so many, MANY great Mexican food places, why just have one favorite.

Yelp
Hugo's is a solid little spot offering both vegan and non-vegan options in the Sunset Cliffs area of San Diego. Parking is ample (the have a lot in the back!) and an adorable outdoor patio (plus plenty of seating inside if you prefer). Food is always satisfying for both my partner (dairy free) and myself (extra dairy please) and the service is always amazing, making Hugo's a must-visit for us anytime we're in San Diego.

Yelp
I think it's cool that they have a lot of vegetarian options, I'm not vegetarian myself though. I had the two taco combo. I had one shiitake taco and a fried fish taco. I'm not a huge fan of the shiitake taco, but the fish taco was amazing. Beans and rice were good. Nicely decorated. Bathroom is okay, but parking is great!!

Yelp
The perfect place to eat brunch on a Sunday after Church Service. Great atmosphere quick seating and service. The menu has options of all dietary restrictions. The food was delicious

Yelp
I had 1 week to make a reservation for a party of 13, and Hugo's quickly responded and accommodated our party. The day of, I needed to add 2 more guests to the reservation, no problem they said. We were seated in a space that allowed us to talk and laugh, while eating great food and receiving great service from Julio. He was kind, made great suggestions, and took good care of us. We will be coming here again. Thank you Hugo's.

Yelp
We were welcomed warmly and sat right away. The décor is really fun and creates a good atmosphere. The food is okay. There are lots of vegan options. The enchiladas were good. I tried the cheese (best), shrimp (good), and the chicken. It came with beans and rice. My mom got the taco salad (tostada grande Guadalajara). She enjoyed it. The salsa and chips that come before the meal were not great. The salsa was very watery and the flavor was weak. The chips were too thick. I also tried the mango and peach shake. They were both very bland.

Yelp
Another round here at this amazing place! We visited in April for my nephews graduation and decided to celebrate another nephew who graduated from the Marines. Once again, the service was great, just as was the food!! And we love the ambiance!! We love the Margarita flights too! Thank you to Hugo's Cocina!!

Yelp
Let's start by saying the staff was very welcoming and kind. As our lunch continued we rarely got a check in and I had to hunt them down or wave at them. Normally, if it's a busy day all tables are taken, understandable. But there were two tables taken, including ours. Now, let's move to our plates, I got the carne asada plate, my husband the trio enchiladas and my daughter the carne asada torta. 1. Carne Asada plate - beans, rice & homemade corn tortillas were delicious, now the meat was very bland and it tasted old. My 3 yr old spit it out and refused to continue eating it. 2. Trio Enchiladas - husband said the flavor was okay, he has had better. But they were eatable. 3. Carne Asada Torta - my daughter said it had a lot of ingredients and the taste was good, but the meat was again, on the old stale taste. Might I add the place was very well kept and cleaned, the music wasn't too loud great place to go to. But they need to improve on the taste of their food and checking in frequently to make sure customers don't need anything extra.

Sarah F.

Yelp
My husband, dog, and I had a great time at this restaurant. There are so many vegan options and the food was so delicious that we had to return the next day to try more dishes. Josie helped us out both times and she was a delight :)
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
Plenty of seat, even for a big group. Many vegan options which was helpful for my friend. Tried the fish taco combo plate and the tacos are so stuffed that I don't think I needed the combo--the two tacos would've been sufficient. The grilled fish taco was amazing and flavorful and the fried fish taco was really good too but since it was saucy and I didn't eat it fast enough, I couldn't tell much of the fried part except for the ends (so if I return in the future, I'd order both to be grilled). The beans were okay (a little bland). Husband had the mole enchilada plate and he was not too impressed so I'm sure he'd try something else next time (such as one of the fajita plates which also look great)
google avatar

Cristal V.

Yelp
I love coming here when I'm visiting San Diego. I come here for their extensive vegan & vegetarian options. I've tried their vegan enchiladas, vegetarian bean & cheese burrito, and their vegan chicken taco combo dish. The food is super delicious and authentic in my opinion! The staff is very welcoming and service is top tier. They're always checking in asking if everything is okay. Also their margaritas are delicious!
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
The options are amazing. This was the best vegan burrito I ever had. It's hard to find just a simple bean rice and veggie burrito that's not cooked in animal fat! I love this place. Excited to try the vegan rice pudding!
google avatar

Rodge B.

Yelp
I literally stopped in this place to take a piss after seeing a sunset, but I felt guilty, so I ordered a taco. WOW, the shredded beef taco was SO good, and you get a lot for the price! 11 out of 10, highly recommend.

Yelp
Visited this place on a Saturday for dinner. We were able to get seated without any wait time. They have both indoor and outdoor spaces. However, the patio area was super cute and romantic so we decided to sit there. They had an interesting margarita flight. It came with 4 miniature margaritas - lemon, mango, strawberry, tamarind. We loved the margarita flight! The margaritas came with a spiced rim that added a nice touch! They do provide complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered a side of guacamole to go with it. The chips were not oily and the salsa was not too spicy. For food, we got the veggie tamales with a side of refried beans and spanish rice. My friend got the fried burrito. The veggie tamale was very authentic. It was not overly cheesy and was covered with ranchero sauce. They did provide a green sauce to help kick up the spice levels. My friend liked her burrito too. We loved that they had so many veggie and vegan options. I took a long time to go through the list since everything looked so amazing. This place is authentic, walkable from Sunset cliffs/ocean beach and is not overly pricey. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are craving Mexican food!
google avatar

Veggie M.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly and accommodating here. The interior is festive. Lots of vegan options! The 3 star rating is mostly due to the food being unremarkable in both flavor & presentation. The plates were bare except for the item ordered. For example, the bean & tofu burrito came alone in the middle of a plate, without sauce, sides, or garnish. Our orders took quite some time to arrive. Note that the menu -- while vast and including many meat & dairy-free options -- does not include descriptions of the dishes. This makes it challenging to decipher what will be in/on/part of your dish.

Yelp
I can't wait to try all their burritos now. I went with California Burrito : Angus steak seasoned, french fries, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese. I called it in and got it to-go. Sooooooo goooood!!! They are some of the friendliest people in the industry! I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Vivian M.

Yelp
I'm happy to say that this location continues to provide excellent customer service and incredible vegan burritos. They have become my go-to option when I don't feel like cooking. I've been visiting this spot for vegan Mexican food for years; when it was originally Ranchos. I truly appreciate the consistency in their quality and service.
google avatar

Yelp
I like this place. They have amazing vegan options, like so many! I really like their vegan cheese enchilada. They have decent wine. I wish they had a full liquor license but besides that, it's a great place. The staff is nice and attentive. Thank you for having so many vegan options. I will be back soon.

Yelp
I cannot say enough great things about this amazing family owned restaurant. It's my absolute favorite restaurant anywhere! Hugo has retired, but he has put the restaurant in such great hands. Georgina, her daughter Kelsey, and many other lovely family members continue Hugo's tradition with impeccable, flavorful and absolutely delicious Mexican food, served with tremendous warmth and love. My sweetheart and I cross the county from La Mesa to come down here at least once a week because it's so darn fantastic. My friend April is always craving it now as well, so she also comes down from La Mesa. Sorry for causing all that traffic on the 8 freeway. The restaurant is colorful, with adorable lights, and a giant piñata, and just so many special touches all around. We appreciate how Georgina has made it warm and inviting. Every time we are there, we see another special touch, from dishes to table decorations. We absolutely recommend the hot carrots, which are by far the BEST in the region. We also get the yummy guacamole, and the chips and salsa are excellent! The salsa is also the best I've had in any Mexican restaurant. We love eating vegan here. The tofu scramble is sautéed with delicious spices, and the vegan carne asada is hands-down the best in any restaurant! We also usually get a side of molé sauce, which is outrageously tasty. My friend is a meat eater and she says the chicken tostada is superb. The rice is fluffy and tasty, and it's also vegan. All of the beans are made vegan friendly, and they are delectable! I usually get the black beans which are so savory, and the refried beans are delicious. This restaurant is by far the one that you need to put on the top of your list to visit. And if you're like us and our friends, you'll fall in love with it too.

Yelp
Love going here for their Vegan fish vegan fish tacos! Love that they have a great selection of vegan food. I like taking my non vegan friends here cause we can all enjoys the food without making sacrifices! Very flavorful!!

Yelp
What a great find! Hugo's Cocina is a small, no-frills spot with amazing food. The vegan tacos were out of this world-so flavorful, and the texture was spot on. * The service was fast and friendly, and the portions were seriously generous. Love that they have great happy hour deals, too. Highly recommend this place!

Sam S.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is great and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The menu is huge, highly recommend it. They have a separate vegan menu, so many choices!!!

Yelp
Absolute banger. The people who work here are so sweet, the food is great, the menu includes OG mexican and vegan mexican. 5/5 this place is a treasure. Cute patio good for dogs
google avatar

Yelp
Really good food and so many vegan options, you and your non vegan friends/family can eat together and have a good time. It's rare to find a place that's good at both. If your vegan in the area I'd definitely check this place out
google avatar

Cirwan S.

Yelp
So I always thought this spot was Vegan only. I was wrong it's a full on Mexican cantina with a amazing setting and great vibes! So much variety on the menu. They have vegan options as well as traditional Mexican food. You know my favorite is San Diego style Mexican food so I got some carne asada fries my wife got the chicken quesadillas with mango. She loved it. Also I had to get the usual fish tacos ! Loved it. Our server Luis explain the menu so good ! Definitely recommending this place to my peeps !

Yelp
Clean, friendly, family style Mexican restaurant. Outstanding service, and very authentic food (in my experience). I was anxious to try the Pineapple Tamale which was unique, delicious and did not disappoint. We shared it with the table since we all wanted to try it. The fajitas and burritos ordered for our main courses we excellent.

Yelp
This place was wonderful! We went on a Saturday at around 6:30 pm and were seated immediately for 3 people. The food was delicious, I'd especially recommend the spinach and mushroom quesadilla. I've never had anything like it before and it was AMAZING. It was also a huge portion for around $16 and I was only able to eat half. I took the rest home for leftovers and it preheated amazingly. I would also definitely recommend trying the margaritas. I got a frozen strawberry margarita in a large size for $12 and it was incredibly worth it. I will definitely be back to this place, it was wonderful.

Yelp
Please stay open, Hugo's. Please. I hope I'm not writing an obituary here, but word on the street is that their lease is expiring today. That's a damned shame. Hugo's makes some of the best vegan Mexican food I've ever eaten. My wife and I were just here a few days ago. I got the vegan California burrito and she got the vegan chicken enchiladas. So, so good. The burrito came with vegan carne asada and was so flavorful. Like so many well-prepared vegan dishes, they were hearty as well as delicious. I can't believe that I won't be able to return. If there is a lesson here, it's that we have to support local businesses, now more than ever. Thank you, Hugo's. Do you believe in miracles? Please stay open, Hugo's! UPDATE: I do believe in miracles. Hugo's is staying open and is now under new management! I highly recommend that you give them a try.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was great! Loved the ambiance. Good music playing. Loved the decor. Wish I would taken photos of the food but I was too hungry to wait. My husband and I had the enchiladas. I had mine with the green sauce, rice and beans. SOOO tasty.
google avatar

Erica F.

Yelp
I have to be honest and say I probably won't go back here. Service was great, but food was disappointing. The rolled taco meat was overcooked/burned and the quesadillas were dripping in chicken juice. It's a bummer, because I used to love this place. It seems to have sadly gone downhill.
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
I've gone here twice so far and the employees have been wonderful. The cashier taking my order was friendly and accommodating. I ordered pretty much exclusively vegan options so far (mushroom enchilada, vegan chicken enchilada, vegan carne asada enchilada, vegan california burrito, vegan pollo asado burrito) and they've all been like a solid 8.2/10. The restaurant is super colorful and charming, decorated almost like a festival of sorts.
google avatar

Elena S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the vegan food options here. I would recommend trying the vegan birria! Super yummy. Made me think of my grandparents' cooking in the best of ways. Margarita flight was also refreshing. Not too strong and not pre-mixed. Was a great little gem to find on our trip. Hope to be back soon! (Also, shout out to Luis for the great service!)
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem that offers plentiful vegan Mexican food! It's a quick walk away from all the hustle and bustle of Ocean Beach so it's not as quickly identifiable. A couple of friends and I were walking around finding options that weren't a 2 hour wait and stumbled across this humble establishment. The staff were so friendly and their outdoor patio is really homey and comforting in the evening. Between getting the green or red sauce, I personally liked the green sauce. It had the acidity and the savory that I was looking for in a sauce. It is a bit more watery, if that's not your preference. ..... TWO VEGAN TACO COMBO (VEGAN CARNE ASADA AND VEGAN POLLO): 5/5 comes with everything you're looking for in a taco plate (rice, beans, guac, cheese). the tacos were decently stuffed and there was no skimping on the beans and rice.
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Was pretty disappointed with this place. Started out solid with good service at first. Ordered the shrimp cocktail which was good. When our food came it took quite some time before our waitress came to check on how things were going. I ordered a fish taco but was sure they gave me vegan version instead because the "fish" was made of beans you could literally see and break up. When I told the waitress she told me she'd check with the kitchen but she thought it was their normal fish. When the rest of the table was done and the check was brought the fish was never brought up. It's not like it was super busy either. The agua Fresca was overly sweet. The carne asada was overcooked. Would not return here. Just giving them an extra star for all their vegan options.
