Man Responsible for Bringing Mongolian Barbecue to America Has Died | Eater LA

"I learned that the very first Colonel Lee’s Mongolian BBQ opened in Northridge in 1969 as John C. Lee’s initial location to introduce Mongolian barbecue to Americans, using the buffet-selection-to-cook format that became the chain’s hallmark and served as the springboard for its expansion across Los Angeles and California." - Mona Holmes

I handed my bowl to the elvish little helper behind the grill, and with mystical focus and an extremely hot surface, he forged an epic plate of stir-fry. I chose the ingredients, sure but the tender love, care, and probable wizardry happened behind the grill. Our server was a bearded giant with a smile warm enough to balance out the inferno of the cooktop. Convenient, fun, and delicious from start to finish. Cheers to the heroic humans (and elves) working there. you turned my questionable bowl choices into greatness.

Google
Absolutely amazing place eat all you want. The way you want and what you want for the price? It's fantastic deal

Food was really good as always!!! My husband and I absolutely love coming here!

Google
We had one of these nearby when I was in high school, and I think of it often. So, when we drove through a city that had a HuHot, we had to stop in. It was great. Not quite as great as I remembered it, but it has been a long time, and I really liked being able to mix my own stir fries. And honestly the pricing is relatively low compared to what other restaurants are charging right now, especially for kids.

Google
Great place if you are a good cook. This restaurant offers a buffer menu where the customers choose from a variety of noodles, meat options, vegetables, and sauces. The chefs will cook whatever you give them on a big grill in front of you. There was too much variety in everything, and that can be a problem. The taste of the meal depends on what you choose, and therefore it depends on the customers knowledge of the ingredients. It wasn't one of our best food, but one can say it is our lack of knowledge about Mongolian food. But how many people really know about Mongolian food and sauces? The atmosphere was good. Good for one time experience.

Lawrence T.

Google
A very unique and great experience you mix your own raw food in the cafeteria buffet, then bring it to the big round skillet and they fry it up right in front of you! Excellent food great cooks was very impressed 👍

Arlene C.

Google
The shades had what appeared to be mold growing on the areas on the bottom portion where most likely children had smeared food. Otherwise it was a good experience

James H.

Google
Food and service were as expected. Which was good. But the restaurant looked a little run down, dated. Bathroom could have used attention. Also some staff, not my waiter, seemed less than motivated. The high light was the grill master. Good talk. Tipped him good.

Yelp
We stopped at HuHot Mongolian Grill and really enjoyed it! At first we didn't realize it was buffet style--you grab a bowl, load it up with your choice of meats, veggies, noodles, and then add sauces before they cook it in front of you on the grill. The selection of toppings was impressive, and the sauces were so flavorful. Everything came out hot, fresh, and delicious. The line moved a bit slow, but we came right at lunch time. Overall, a really yummy experience with plenty of choices. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
As you came in you will be well greeted, will take you to a booth or table. So just happened this place is a AYCE But, No instructions or what not. But I didn't wanna look stupid so I asked the server to walk us through. She took our order. But I was like; I thought its all you can eat but since there's a side dish and everything that comes with it. So yeah I told her what we wanted. So, for those of you that haven't been here. The first time I put everything all at once and I couldn't even eat it. So, the second time around here's what I did.. read down below Here's the tip: You can grab as many bowl of everything you want in it. So, I separate the noodles, meat, vegetables, and other condiments. Make sure you put the sauce separately as well for about 5-6 scoop otherwise your food will not be tasty. Add, garlic and onion Important tip: it's a must: these chefs have no Idea doesn't even ask if it's your first time so You're gonna expect that they know how to cook and they will not tell you, so whatever bowl you got.. they will just throw/ toss it all together in the habachi area. MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM HOW YOU WANT IT!! like: you can have them STEAM THE VEGGIES, pour the sauce at the END. Seriously, cause if not, you will be disappointed and mine came out Bland, Noodles are DRY, and cold. I should've taken a picture but my baby was kinda fussy at that time So, the Price at the end: BtW, we came here during Dinner time $17.99 and there's two of us our bill was $55. I regret eating here. I should've just came to GOLDEN CORAL... or CHINA GARDEN BUFFET much worth it. So how did our bills came out... The drinks are not included (which btw I didn't get a refill) All the side dish that I thought was included which the server said that it's included.. Well, obviously NOT! Didn't wanna make scandal. I never complained about the price just paid it and left. But.. all thoughtout experiece wasn't that good

Yelp
I can't recommend this restaurant enough! I've been twice and I already can't wait to go again! The service is always really friendly even when they're short staffed, there's a great meat and vegetable variety. The sauce choices were a little overwhelming for me but I like they have suggestions of what sauces to pair! I always use the recipes or use them as guides. And you get to watch your food being cooked! They also make cocktails, I ordered a Long Island iced tea and it was perfect. 10/10 recommend!!!!

Yelp
Love this place! Honestly one of my favorite places in Columbia. Like other Mongolian barbecues, you pick your meats/seafoods, veggies, and sauces (they have an amazing selection of sauces!) and put everything in a bowl (or 2). Then they grill it up for you on the round grill they have near the center of the restaurant. The people working the grill are super friendly, and the food is delicious and 100% customizable. Plus it's all you can eat, including free soup and salad!

Bill C.

Yelp
Sub par food, but all you can eat. Service and the folks working the grill were excellent, but they could only do so much with what they have.
google avatar

Sheila W.

Yelp
Amazing food, friendly staff, and beautiful atmosphere. I love how this place is set up, and absolutely love how creative you can get with all the food and sauce options!

Hannah H.

Yelp
Everytime my boyfriend and I come to columbia (an hour from us) we come to huhot. Sometimes we even make a special trip. We have never ever been disappointed. The cooks are always happy to talk, they seem like they actually like their jobs, and the table service is great(our glasses are always full!) The restaurant has such a nice environment too.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Food and service has always been great. Unfortunately, the cooks are starting to throw their utensils between their legs and getting food residue on them from their pants and aprons. Sorry but that's disgusting and can make someone very sick.
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
Went here tonight. Drove up from Eldon and it was worth the drive. Good drinks. A great selection of both ingredients and sauces. The service was super. I didn't catch our servers name but it is listed as McCartney, H. She did an excellent job always seeming to show up just when we needed something. The guys doing the cooking did great and really seemed to enjoy their jobs.

Ginger C.

Yelp
This was mine and my husband's first time ever going to HuHot. And needless to say it won't be our last. The food was great. The service was excellent. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Clancey B.

Yelp
See the huge group of employees by the bar? Yeah they avoided serving like the plague. Waters never filled, and honestly they were mocking customers. Pretty sad.... Because the food is so good. Yet the service was a nightmare I hope the staff consider caring.

Andrew L.

Yelp
Great food !!! Service was awesome, server Ellie was tremendous. Even got to meet the manager Ketsee. she made sure our dining experience was the best !!! Highly recommend !!!

Richard G.

Yelp
Detergent in the sauce was a huge let down. There might actually be crab in a crab Rangoon recipe. Very disappointed. Eggs rolls are usually good but not today. Good service and good staff. Facility is clean and welcoming. Won't likely be back though. Detergent can be very dangerous and it's really a hard stop.

Mike A.

Yelp
Very good food! You get raw food from the buffer, then add the sauces that you want, and take it to the grill to get it cooked. Large variety of very good sauces let you customize it to your hearts content. I've made things varying from Asian all the way through Mexican. They were recently closed for a remodel and I'm not sure if they're back open yet or not.
google avatar

Chelsey H.

Yelp
I haven't been to HuHot in about a year but decided to treat my boyfriend for Fathers Day! The customer service is always on point and they do a good job at getting everyone their food at a fast rate. I was able to get a 25% student discount and when you check in on yelp you get a 50% off appetizer!
google avatar

Lynda H.

Yelp
I love this place. Good healthy food! I like to watch my food being prepared and I like to select my own vegetables and sauces.

Bill F.

Yelp
Food was fabulous and Ellie our server was wonderful! Ketsee introduced us to Kahn's cake which will truly be a favorite.

William H.

Yelp
Great food and our server Ellie was wonderful! If you are looking for great food with an Asian twist, this is the place for you!

Yelp
Matthew L sucks as a server bro. He is a dick but I will tip him. Bro was mad that I wanted rice

Yelp
Good food and affordable price. Very good visit! Nice clean and freshly prepared. I'll visit again soon.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat. The bad part is that during dinner time, the line can, in fact, be terribly long. It's not a date-killer, though, since as long as you and your date stay together, you can talk while you're in line. I do think they ought to expand the grill area to allow more food to cook at once, if that is possible, because you really can get stuck waiting for 20+ minutes per grill trip if you pick the wrong time. But the taste of the food is second to none. And if it's not, it's because you picked the wrong ingredients. The staff is always friendly, and the grill guys are frequently putting on a flame show and always have a smile. Here's a sauce combo to try, preferably with two bowls. On your second trip, I'd also recommend putting some of the complementary rice in the bowl, because it really soaks up the flavor: 3 ladles "not so sweet and sour" 2 ladles "Mongol Mustard" 1 ladle "Kung Pao Yow!" 1/2 ladle of lemon juice (or full small ladle) 1 ladle garlic oil (I always stir it around before I dip so I get just the right amount of garlic pieces) 1 ladle sweet chili It makes for a really sweet and tangy sauce, with just the right amount of kick to it. If you like things super spicy, add (only) a little red pepper flake on your way through the grill, preferably on the side. Also, when they are doing the free soup or salad, the Asian salad is the best, by far.

Yelp
Been going to the Columbia HuHot for years and it's definitely one of my favorite restaurants in town. Service has always been good and the ingredients are always fresh.
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
You make it yourself, so really, the food is what you make it, plenty of options! Wish there was more room to prep your bowl, with just a bit more variety for those that aren't up to par in mongolian cuisine, but you get the hang of it quickly. Add plenty of sauce and oils for a good bowl. Really hard to mess this up. Always a stop when we make it to Columbia!
google avatar

Jed K.

Yelp
Well, I decided to go out a limb and try Mongolian BBQ. This place was alright; but I few complaints. The variety in freshness of the various ingredients was fairly remarkable. And for being for so expensive it would almost be the same price to travel to Mongolia and get the real thing. On the plus side, the staff was nice and the food was fairly decent. Definitely a solid 3 of a restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely love everything about HuHot, and this visit was no different. The manager was on the ball - he seems to be everywhere, exactly when he was needed. They had $2 rail drinks when we were there. Pro tip: they now have zucchini noodles in the veggie section. Because of how long they are cooked they do get pretty soft, but nonetheless, it's definitely a healthier option.

Thammineni G.

Yelp
Mid. If anyone asked me what I tought I would say that it is average at best, no offence to my medditeranian homies but I think that the presentaion what pretty lacluster. Excuse the spelling
google avatar

Richard N.

Yelp
In a college town, this is a place catering to students providing them a different experience than they may otherwise be able to afford given their resources. The food was decent, but cleanliness, or lack there of, reduced it from average...

Crystal P.

Yelp
We've eaten at several HuHots, and this one topped them all. It was quite a contrast to a very poor HuHot that I recently experienced in Topeka, KS. At that one, the cooks spent more time chatting than they did watching the food, but at this Columbia location, they were constantly moving, watching the food, making sure nothing was being overcooked. They were also friendly, energetic, and very responsive to any special needs of their customers, from someone needing everything gluten-free (they cleaned down a section of the grill thoroughly for her) and my dining companion's need to avoid spices (they brought out new spatulas to work with her food). In the meantime, the waitstaff were really on top of things. The manager was on the ball, helping out with cleaning tables when the rest of the servers were otherwise occupied. We were there during the lunch rush on a holiday weekend, so were impressed. We'll definitely return to this location.
google avatar

Enrique S.

Yelp
Two years later, time for an updated review. Nothing much has changed. Still love seafood night (Tuesdays) and their salads are still a little lame but the food more than makes up for it. Their egg drop and sweet and sour soups are both very good. Now that they post the calories on just about everything in the place, it is much easier to make a healthier meal than before. No looking at the menu/nutrition info before-hand and planning before getting there...it is all right on the food bars where you load up the noodles, meats, veggies, and sauces. Still a solid 4 star establishment.
google avatar

Alaska C.

Yelp
Because of COVID you don't get in the line system anymore which is nice for distancing and they require masks as you walk in to your table. Staff was friendly. However, food quality wasn't that great. Rice for the table was dry and had no flavor as well as the food itself. Desserts were probably the best thing of the night with the cheesecake and s'mores.
google avatar

Nonna K.

Yelp
Good concept, but poorly executed. Waiting in line to get your food cooked is not my idea of going out to eat. Plus, seeing the mess on the floor the way to the grill and at the grill kinda kills your appetite. Friendly wait staff, but the place is overpriced. Not coming back.
google avatar

Sonya H.

Yelp
HuHot is definitely a unique experience and the restaurant has a lovely, fun atmosphere perfect for the college demographic or a sports game. Being able to customize your meal and watch it get cooked in front of you is always fun, they have great deals on drinks, and the service is solid. However, the actual quality of the food is fairly lacking, so if I just want to enjoy a good meal without any theatrics, I'll generally opt for somewhere else. Experimenting with the sauces is definitely my favorite part of the process, but the meat is frozen and a large portion of the vegetables come from either cans or the freezer as well. The restaurant is fairly pricey, so I would definitely recommend coming for lunch instead of dinner -- the "extra selection" and soup/salad offered by the dinner menu really isn't worth the price hike. Their appetizers are pretty good, but there's nothing particularly special, and their desserts are phenomenal (albeit a walking heart attack threat). Their Khan's Cake is a standard, but fantastic simple chocolate cake, and their Molten Muffin is absolutely delicious, but they also offer some more unique and fun options, such as their Cheesecake Rangoons, S'mores, and (for a limited time) Cookie Dough Rangoons. HuHot is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a fun and unique experience, but it's not my favorite stop.
google avatar

Jaz V.

Yelp
Best place ever. Love watching them cook the food on the grill. Waitresses switch out your drink before you even know you're done with it.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Love Huhot! They always have specials during the night for students, military, etc. that are really good. Their prices are decent but it depends on how hungry you are. You can go up and make yourself as many plates as your heart desires. If you go up more than once the price is absolutely worth it. Especially since dinner comes with a soup or salad and rice. I always follow the pad Thai recipe which comes out exactly like a pad Thai dish- so good. Love this place- very easy to eat healthy here, they don't use and oil to cook with and have a huge selection of fresh veggies to mix in.
google avatar

Elliott S.

Yelp
The aroma of true Mongolian cuisine really blossoms here at my local huhut. Everything from the light fixtures to the delightfully smooth buffet line ladles really make this a unique dining experience. I really felt at home when the chef took my bowl and stared me in the eye as he prepared my dinner. Would come back, great job everyone.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Don't go here. Just don't. It pained me to spend my hard earned money on this pathetic food. First of all, the meat is all FROZEN (I have been to Mongolian BBQs all over the entire country and have never seen frozen meat presented on the raw bar), which completely set the tune for the whole meal. Most of the chicken was literally caked in ice..poor quality to say the least. Our egg rolls were clearly frozen and nowhere near fresh quality. The restaurant is dirty, and the service was awful. We ordered soup to go with our meal and never received it even though the waitress stood and talked for the whole service and wasn't busy at all. I have never left a bad review for a business before but I trusted the good reviews about this place and shouldn't have. Trust me, do not go here. You can make better food yourself at home.
google avatar

Earl K.

Yelp
A fun place with nice atmosphere. The hostess and waitress were pleasant, energetic and helpful. The COOKS, however.... grrrr. Many cooks around talking about work shifts, ignoring your food after dumping it on the grill. Someone eventually will come along, even the "clean-up girl", and rescue your food. Sometimes no stirring, chopping, mixing or anything. No water added to keep food moist. Food shoved at you while you are being bumped down the line. Really not a $10 a head before drink, soup, salad or dessert experience whatsoever. And it's really dirty in there from floor to ceiling. And the employees spend their break yakking loudly at the bar, keeping your waitress busy. So... it's $10 each for just main course which you line up, select, dash with sauce and wait in line while they dump it on a big fry table and eventually scoop it back up. Nice work if you can get it.
google avatar

Thomas O.

Yelp
This was my first time here and while the food was satisfying, the restaurant itself was a disaster. As I sit here writing this review, the staff have no idea what cleanliness is. This is without a doubt one of the most dirtiest restaurants I've ever been in. Staff cannot move the condiments to clean a table. Floor is atrocious, and dust throughout the ceiling especially the light fixtures. Good food but will not be returning.
google avatar

Austin B.

Yelp
I'm a regular here. (I probably stop in once a week on average.) I love HuHot. They have a nice variety of ingredients to make - your - own Mongolian style stir-fry. For the carnivores, rejoice, for your options are pork, beef, chicken, sausage, and a selection of fish and sometimes even calamari and shrimp! (Calamari and shrimp are dinner only I believe..). For those who love their greens, there is a nice selection including celery, spinach, sprouts, mushrooms, peppers, tofu, and lots more that I am failing to remember. I love their sauces, they allow you to go pretty much as mild or spicy as you could want with a vast range of flavors too (the green curry is good too!). Appetizers are hit or miss--I can vouch for the pot stickers (but really, how hard is it to screw up potstickers?). Me and my fiancée always know what we want and go straight to the grill after being helped. Once you find the sauces you like, you'll love your food. I recommend putting lots of sauce into your bowls (5+ ladles of sauce per bowl. And, yes, I grab 2 bowls at a time, sue me). Unless you prefer a drier stir-fry. Come during lunch and save some money! Plus the lunch crowd here is small, so unlike if you come for dinner you won't be waiting long to get your food cooked.

Kaydence H.

Yelp
nasty af. crunchy ass rice crusty ass noodles . absolutely never eating here again when yall dont know how to cook RICE .
google avatar

Rochelle K.

Yelp
Not the first time I've been there and won't be the last! Vast variety of raw meat, noodles, veggies, fruit, sauces, etc. you go through the buffet and then take it to the grill and they cook it in front of you. Can't go wrong, as you pick out exactly what you're having for dinner! Definitely recommend! Love this place - have to visit every time I'm in CoMo!
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
It's difficult to review a place where you make your own food, but there's a lot more than just the food to this place. I have come here many times, so this review is kind of a joint review for the multitude of times. The inside of the restaurant is nice, but a little dark. It really depends on where you're sitting, but sadly the place could do with a little more natural light. The food is awesome. It's perfect for picky eaters, since you choose exactly what goes into your food. There isn't a large variety of noodles, but there are several types of meats, and TONS of different vegetables to choose from. And there's always someone nearby to restock anything that is running low. The sauce varieties are also vast, and it's really the sauces that you choose that make your meal. Fortunately, it's like a buffet, so if you make something and you don't like the way it tastes, just go up and make another. That said, you might not want to get up and make another when you see how long the line is and how long the wait might be. This place is quite busy, especially on the weekends, and if you come in during a super busy time, the service really sucks. It pays to have an early dinner or late lunch just so you can skip the crowds.
google avatar

Meghan C.

Yelp
This was my first visit to HuHot Mongolian grill. I was assuming that it was going to be something like Flat Top Grill (which I love), and it was. I would say almost exactly like Flat Top, but with less variety here and there. There were more appetizer options, and the crab Rangoon was just like any other, but the sweet & sour sauce was super-sweet. There were just about the same number of meat options as Flat Top, but not as many veggies, and a plethora of sauces. Once you have your food picked out, you take it up to the grill and watch them toss your food around on the grill until it's ready. I had seen a lady with an egg in her bowl and wondered what it was for. The cook tossed the egg up and caught/cracked it on the edge of his spatula. It was so cool! The environment was nice and calming, the music was varied. Full bar. Decent prices and you could go up and refill your plate as many times as you needed to.
google avatar

Terry J.

Yelp
First time here, atmosphere was incredibly inviting, the food was A plus. From sit to eat maybe 8 minutes, cooked to perfection. Amazing flavors, amazing staff, all around great experience.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Typically I love Hu Hot in other cities. The cook today did not squirt any water on any of the batches of food as it was cooking. It made me wonder. Now I know - the food sucked. It was dry and tasteless instead of creamy and saucy! I won't return!
google avatar

Grace T.

Yelp
I feel like this place is VERY pricey for the average college student. However, I do think that this is one of the best Mongolian BBQ places I've been to. The ingredients always look pretty fresh, and even though there's usually a long line before you get your food cooked, I think it's worth it. My advice to you is to mix sauces to get a more complex, rounded flavor; to add at least 5 ladles of sauce to each slightly heaping bowl of ingredients; and to put a bit extra of each ingredient you want (sometimes I use two bowls to hold everything), because inevitably you lose about a third of all your food while they cook it. Also, I believe on Sundays, students with their ID get 25% off.
google avatar

Brad K.

Yelp
Service was speedy and food was great! This is a don't miss if you are in the area!
google avatar

Carrie R.

Yelp
Our son took us to this place while we were in town for the weekend. What a neat idea!! You build your raw food in bowls and then take it to the cooks in the middle and watch while they cook your food. It is all you can eat so if you leave hungry it is your own fault!!
google avatar

Ebony S.

Yelp
The food here was great the vegetables were very fresh and the servers and cooks were very nice and welcoming
