Hujan Locale: Modern Balinese Cuisine in a Beautiful Setting, with Minor Comfort Flaws
From the talented chef behind Mamasan—one of our favorites—Hujan Locale offers Balinese food with a modern twist in a setting that's both vibrant and rustic, yet elegant enough for a date night.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly and attentive staff, and the sight (and smell) of charcoal-grilled dishes immediately whetted our appetites. We dined on the second floor, where we sampled a selection of their standout offerings.
The fried bebek (duck) was a highlight: fragrant, crispy on the outside, with the richness of the duck meat balanced perfectly by the spicy, sour flavors of the accompanying chilies—we especially loved the addition of mango, which brought freshness and brightness to the dish.
The tuna was also excellent—skillfully cooked, seared on the outside but still raw inside—and paired with a delicate mix of herbs and spices that gave the dish a refined Balinese touch.
We were less impressed by the octopus. While the texture was tender and juicy, we couldn't detect the starfruit flavor mentioned in the description, and the accompanying sauce tasted more like a standard curry rather than something uniquely Balinese.
The main downside of the evening was the heat on the second floor. Despite having a couple of air-conditioning units, the open windows made the dining area uncomfortably hot, and it was obvious that many guests were sweating throughout their meals. Ironically, the toilets were freezing cold, with the air-conditioning turned up to the maximum—making it an uncomfortable transition between spaces.
Overall, Hujan Locale offers flavorful, creative Balinese dishes in a gorgeous space, but we hope they can better manage the indoor temperature to make the dining experience as comfortable as the food is delicious.
