The Laura Hotel in Houston Opens Steamboat-Themed Restaurant Hull & Oak | Eater Houston

"Set in The Laura Hotel at 1070 Dallas Street, I found Hull & Oak (which opened March 24) to lean heavily into nautical vibes with a renovated dining room featuring high archways, boat-like curves, and sea-green chairs. The menu draws on Southern and Texas traditions: breakfast and brunch offerings include pound cake French toast with blueberry compote and lemon curd, fried cheddar grits with crawfish etouffee, a pulled pork Benedict, and Johnny cakes topped with strawberry preserves, fresh berries, whipped lemon ricotta, and smoked maple syrup; dinner brings starters like deviled eggs and hot honey wings and heartier entrees such as a smoked half chicken, a seared salmon with blackened shrimp, savory cajun bread pudding with green beans, and a double bone pork chop with sweet corn puree, roasted succotash, and fried okra. Executive chef John Nguyen—who previously worked at Michelin-starred SPQR in San Francisco and served as executive banquet chef at the Austin City Convention Center—leads the kitchen. A major highlight for me was the barrel-aged cocktail program (including a traditional and an Oaxaca Old Fashioned made with both mezcal and tequila) and classics like a Vieux Carré; the standard cocktails also impress, from the theatrical “Smokin In The 713” (Woodford Reserve, amaro, salted honey, bitters, finished with smoked cedar) to a vodka-based Southern Tea with sweet tea, peach, amaro Montenegro, and lemon and a rum-based “S.O.S.” with banana, cinnamon, pineapple, and lime. The restaurant plans special programming—tastings with local distillers, mixology classes, and collaborative dinners (including a three-course Duckhorn Portfolio dinner on April 27)—and serves breakfast, brunch, and dinner on the schedule listed on its website." - Brittany Britto Garley

This is a very popular restaurant and we can see why. My family and I had brunch here. The food was very delicious (even for my little ones). We were so excited to eat we forgot to take more pictures.. We really enjoyed ourselves. Ms. Toni was our waitress and she is really a sweetheart, down to earth and we appreciate her sharing her insight with us. She made the total experience feel like we were vip family members. Ms. Toni is the best! You'll see what I mean when you visit. Thank you for such an awesome experience.

Google
Wow! First off, thank you Ms. Toni- the recommendations were great, the service was amazing, and the time spent here was priceless. The expresso martini were chefs kiss & the waffles were buttery and delectable! You have to come into the hotel & go to the second floor but it’s definitely worth it! Parking is on the street and you pay the meter. I can’t wait to come back!!

The food is smashing. Southern cooking that is rich in flavor with a deft culinary hand so it’s not too heavy on the palette or stomach. IYKYK. I love a good use of fire with food and the brussel sprouts were roasted so well mixed with the honeyed pecans and pomegranate. I had the blackened fish tacos which were very meaty. I wish the pineapple flavoring of the slaw had a stronger punch but overall it works. What I have to praise the most is the staff. Tanisha was so informative regarding the menu options and her suggestions didn’t fail. Shout out to Chef Josh for an amazing poolside lunch and today’s breakfast (the only photos I got unfortunately). The Laura Hotel is a gem in this city surrounded by your go to market standard hotels. Quiet but needed for this New Yorker.

Google
Unfortunately the space and are of this restaurant is good but is not worth the wait time, quatlity of the food and the wait time for the drinks. We order an omelet which is priced at $21 Came out burnt and tasted burnt. Pulled pork Benedict Was ok but definitely not worth the $23 Peach cream waffles ( brulèed peaches) supposedly. Over price and did not came as it was described

Google
Excellent breakfast with a friend while out of town for Association business. My poundcake French toast was delicious and my friend’s biscuits and gravy looked amazing! Thank you Ms. Toni for your excellent service.

Google
This charming restaurant is located inside the Laura Hotel in downtown Houston. I was intrigued by the vibe and ambience, but found the food to be excellent. The menu is not expansive and there are limited choices. However, my entrée the barbecue shrimp and grits are one of the best dishes I’ve had of the sorts in Houston. Highly recommend but would suggest reservations as it is a smaller venue and can’t get crowded on the weekends. The service was good but found there were several times the waiter appeared to interrupt us mid conversation so some room for improvement. But overall delightful experience.

Google
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Deviled eggs, Cajun pasta, peach cobbler. Perfection. Ms. Toni was my server and did a fantastic job. One of most unique spaces I’ve seen as well. I’ll be back and I’m bringing folks with me!

Google
Absolutely beautiful place, very friendly. Crew member Tanisha did a fantastic job serving our big military group. Chef Ricardo throw it down too.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Chef Barbra is a treasure and excellent dishes. Server Tmisha was attentive and made our lunch an event. Would highly recommend

Yelp
This place is located inside of the hotel on the 2nd floor. We made reservations but you don't really need to. It is very nice inside. We sat in a booth. Our server was very accommodating. For brunch I got the shrimp and grits which were delicious & filling. I also ordered a side of bacon. The mimosas are great too. I would say it is more on the expensive side of brunch, but totally worth it.

Yelp
Visited for a Valentines Day dinner and the food was nice. I loved the edition of the live musician singing love songs. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. We opted to sit within the bar area, which was an open space. The crab cake was good. My favorite cocktail was the Garden of Eden.

Yelp
Sunday downtown Houston brunching with my fav!!!! I saw this place on TikTok and saved it in hopes I'd get the chance to go one day and today was the day. Reservations are recommended as the place is small. We were seated immediately and given a menu. The brunch menu was small but the choices were great. Our waitress was amazing and the atmosphere was very inviting. I'll definitely be back to try other dishes.

Yelp
My 2nd stay at The Laura and had their breakfast every day! The menu wasn't long but they were so yum!

Yelp
H&O is located inside The Laura Hotel. For the OG HTX Elites, this hotel used to be the Hotel Alessandra where we had a YEE years ago. You can enter from the street level or from the Greenstreet Complex on the 2nd floor. The restaurant is located on the second floor next to the reception area. When I walked up to the host stand, they asked me to go to the hotel bar area to order. The bar was pretty busy. The bar manager, Joe was bartending and he was doing his best to keep up with the drink orders. There were a few servers wandering around, but it appeared they were short staffed. Joe did apologize for the slow service which we appreciated. Drinks: Garden of Eden - I really enjoyed this cocktail because of the cucumber. It was very refreshing! Sip Pink - It was good, but sweeter than the Garden of Eden. Basil Leaf Us Hanging - My bff ordered this mocktail and she liked it. Food: Deviled Eggs - Spectacular! I loved the black truffles. The spicy peppers were a bit too hot, but the flavors complimented each other well. Brussels Sprouts - They had a nice char and were tasty. Seared Salmon Filet - This dish was good. It came with mashed potatoes and a Creole piperade. Collard Greens - Nice flavor and the portion was huge! We ordered two bowls because the server said the bowl was small, but one portion would have been plenty. Jambalaya Rice - My bff ordered this, but I didn't try any. On my second visit, we went straight to the hotel bar. Sandy was our server but other employees checked on us too. Drinks: Velvet Dream - This drink reminded me of a lavender flavored Clover Club. It was good. Basil Leaf us Hanging - My friend ordered this with mint instead of basil, however it looked different from the one that my bestie ordered. When I looked at the receipt, I noticed that it said Burning Bush instead of Basil Leaf Us Hanging. At any rate, my friend enjoyed her mocktail. Food: Deviled Eggs - I ordered them again because I loved them so much! My friend enjoyed them too. Truffle Fries - Delicious and not too crispy. I've added H&O to my downtown dining rotation. The food and beverages are good and it's near some of the venues that I frequent.

Yelp
We had the chicken and waffles. They were good. We also enjoyed coffee drinks. Ms. Toni took good care of us. She answered all of our questions and provided great service!
google avatar

Yelp
Brunch: Deviled eggs were fabulous! I had the omelette and my mom had waffles. Both were excellent. Service: I hate to say it, but the service was very spotty. Waitress forgot our drink and then splashed coffee everywhere. I feel like she just isn't experienced in this type of a restaurant. Food was so good though we will come back.
google avatar

Keisha E.

Yelp
It was a fairly slow day/time for brunch but the experience was great nonetheless. I had the Chicken and Waffles (4/5) and a Mimosa and my husband had the Chicken Fried Steak(3/5). We shared the deviled eggs (5/5). The service was great...Thank you so much Ms Toni! She shared the dinner menu with us and we plan on returning to try that out.

Yelp
Had an amazing time at Hull & Oak! Visiting from LA and my friends and I were treated so kindly by Ms. Toni. The food was comforting and delicious. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Nena K.

Yelp
Stumbled in here on a weekday for brunch/lunch and didn't regret it one bit!!! They had an amazing 3-course lunch special: an appetizer, entree and dessert for $30. I will say, for some of the particular items, portions are small, but the quality of the food was top tier for the price. My friend was blown away by the Brussel sprouts - I had the jerk wings, burger and peach cobbler pie I believe, and left more than satisfied. Would recommend for lunch. Great service as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Hull and Oak had great staff and solid service, but the food was overpriced and just meh. Definitely paid the convenience tax on this one.

Kira G.

Yelp
Ms. Toni served us at Hull and Oak and we had a great experience! She was kind, funny, and made our stay enjoyable. The food was excellent as well. Thanks again to Ms. Toni for making our experience memorable!

Yelp
We stated to Laura for a weekend and it's such a beautiful hotel and that is where this restaurant was located. We stopped by for breakfast the morning of our departure leaving downtown. He was such a cute ambience. Inside of the restaurant very small. Nothing huge the decor and tables were just delightful. We had an amazing waitress who took great care of us checking on us as much as possible, and the food was normal. I can't really judge it, but it was delicious and Fit the breakfast I needed.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
They have such nice servers and the lunch special is such a deal! You get an app entree and dessert for only $28. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
were in town for Family Reunion & leaving Sunday ( Father's Day). Our son picked Hull & Oak since it was close to our hotel & menu looked good. Once seated our Server/ host was attentive in the beginning. Our coffee was warm and weak. There was a server who walked around with a coffee carafe but NEVER stopped at our table. My cappuccino was Meh. The Menu looked promising however the results did not fit the description nor meet up to the price. Hubby's Peaches & cream pancakes were a little undercooked. Eggs Benedict brisket had BBQ sauce which was too sweet. My Laura's sandwich ( plain bagel w/ sliver of salmon & dill cream cheese, egg) was Seriously lacking in flavor & looked pitiful for the price. My daughter's Croussant sandwich was good. I don't know kw where the Southern Kitchen description comes in. This won't be a repeat visit when we return to Houston

Oskar J.

Yelp
Ms Toni was phenomenal, great care and service. She made sure we were well taken care of!

Yelp
Super lovely decor and seating, the lunch menu has a chef's special featuring an appetizer, entree, and dessert all for 26 dollars. The portions are made to be smaller but they are still very filling. The service was wonderful and very accommodating. Just be aware of what time you decide to dine as the seating can fill up very quickly at times especially with larger parties. Overall a wonderful visit with great food.
google avatar

Deidra L.

Yelp
Love the meal , the service was good we were seated in a timely manner I had one mimosa which was strong lolol . It's super cute on the 2nd floor of the Laura Hotel. The parking is another story as it's downtown

Yelp
We stopped into Hull and Oak in The Laura Hotel and enjoyed a lovely lunch. We arrived on a weekday at 11am and were the first lunch customers. I first noticed the decor which reminded me of Tiffany's. Everything was color coordinated to create a high end luxe feel. From the plates to the table tops there was obvious thought put into the design. We ordered the lunch specials which included any starter, entree and choice of dessert. While it was priced about $25 it was a great deal. Portions were too large for us to finish so you could probably share one or take home leftovers. Our waiter, Christian, was very friendly and attentive. While we were there several large business parties came in without a reservation and the staff quickly moved tables to accommodate them. This did slow service significantly but Christian never seemed overly flustered. Everything we had was delicious. Those little red tomato things (not sure what they are called) were very flavorful. A signature added touch in both dishes. Our total with 20% tip was $67. A bit pricey for lunch but not if you are looking for an upscale experience with delicious food, presented either a pleasing, appetizing esthetic.

Yelp
This is my second stay at The Laura Hotel and my first time eating breakfast here. I prepaid for breakfast for two days for two people, I believe it was $20 extra total. I was allowed to spend up to $32 per person per day. My friend, who is a travel nurse, was supposed to join me for breakfast today, but couldn't make it. I ate breakfast at the bar. The atmosphere was nice and quiet, very relaxing. I tried The Laura Breakfast. It was good, but the egg yolk was a little runnier than I prefer, nonetheless delicious! My server was Tanisha, and she was awesome! Very pleasant and polite, knowledgeable about the menu. She attended to me very well and made me a delicious latte! Tanisha really made my a a little more enjoyable

Yelp
Ms. Toni, an amazing server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, offered excellent recommendations, and provided friendly, attentive service throughout our visit.

Yelp
Hull and Oak was wonderful to host our small team for a private lunch- Ms Toni made sure all of our needs were taken care of quickly and the food was absolutely fabulous. We will definitely be using Hull and Oak again in the future for our team lunches.

Yelp
I'll preface with I ordered room service from Hull and Oak while staying at The Laura Hotel, so I didn't get the full picture. However the biscuits and gravy were incredibly lackluster. The biscuit looked/tasted like it was from Popeyes and the gravy was thin and lacked flavor. The herb potatoes were just okay. I'll definitely get out and go somewhere for breakfast next time.
google avatar

Christen S.

Yelp
I loved everything here! Tanisha was amazing ever nice and so helpful. I ordered the Chefs Express Lunch! Chef Richard did amazing!! Thank you, I will be back soon!
google avatar

Gabby S.

Yelp
It was very easy to make a reservation to come here for Brunch and it wasn't busy at all for a Saturday. It is a smaller restaurant, located on the 2nd floor of a hotel. The service was quick and the food was great, but prices were definitely on the higher end considering the portion size and food. We got an omelet and the brisket eggs Benedict. Both were on the higher end of $25+. Other than the prices, I thought the food was good and it was a easy location to get to in downtown.
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
Excellent experience all around! We had all three meals here and it was wonderful. Tanisha, our server was fantastic and made everything that much better. We'll definitely be back. Thank you to Chef Josh and his team!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was fantastic from the start! Great service, amazing food, and perfect ambiance. The shrimp and grits were flawlessly executed as were the garlic potatoes. The bottomless mimosas made for the perfect girls brunch.

Rosemarie G.

Yelp
Very nice and clean restaurant. Perfect for lunch! Our waitress Ms. Toni was AMAZING! She was so attentive and friendly. Best service by far!! Ask for Ms. Toni when you are seated! You will not be disappointed

Juanita B.

Yelp
AMAZING PLACE!! Service and food were extremely excellent. Tonisha was very friendly and attentive!!! We were a large group. Chef Ricardo cooked DELICIOUS food! We had various appetizers and the salmon entree was superb!!! Can't wait to go back! We live in Katy and the drive was worth it!!

Daniel W.

Yelp
Wonderful service, very personal-able. She always checked up on us to make sure we were taken care of, thank you Ms.Toni!!

Yelp
Tanisha had some of the best service and Abdel made some of the best food. The place looked very pretty and was a vibe
google avatar

Sarronda D.

Yelp
Tanisha was the best host. I was only in town for the Beyonce Concert and looked for the nearest breakfast place the next morning. I was unsure of what to get until Tanisha recommended the Salmon sandwich. She even said I could put it ona croissant and it was incredible. Thank you to her and the chef Josh

Yelp
I had high hopes for two reasons. Houston, TX Autograph Collection 2 stars, for my server. The food was not good. I first ordered the shrimp and grits (comes with collards) The description is green chile cheese grits and bbq shrimp. The shrimp had a line of bbq sauce on it The grits were bland with specks of cheese. Not fully cooked. The sever took it back without hesitation. I then ordered the chicken and waffles. Which are just chicken tenders tossed in honey garlic sauce. Waffle soggy with berries. Bottomless mimosas for $20, which is awesome. Paying high follow for a hotel with lackluster food.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
The atmosphere was friendly, in a quaint small restaurant inside of The Laura Hotel. Upon our arrival, we encountered the most gracious host, who had a table, prepared for us seated, and handed us over to the server, who was a little bit slow, but was good at good. We ordered the sticky buns came out overcooked. They were remade, and the ticket was comped. I had chicken fried steak and potatoes; they were delicious. We had one order that took a while to come out. All the food was delicious. I'll give this place at least a 4.0 for the food and atmosphere. As. for the service, they need more than one waiter in the restaurant during brunch.

Shakia G.

Yelp
Tanisha, the food was great and the service amazing. I love my vegetable omelette and my fruit bowl was amazing. The ambiance was tranquil and quiet in the morning.
google avatar

Cassidy M.

Yelp
Our company took our consultants out to lunch at Hull & Oak today, where we were seated in the restaurant's private room and had an excellent experience. The server, whose name I unfortunately can't recall, was fantastic and ensured we were well taken care of. The ambiance was beautiful, and the food was excellent and served promptly, which is often a challenge with large groups, but Hull & Oak handled it perfectly! The manager, Carl, also checked in on us, which we appreciated. The ONLY suggestion I have is regarding the restaurant's visibility--since there were no signs outside to guide us, it was a bit tricky to find. Adding signage outside, inside, and on the website indicating that Hull & Oak is located in the Laura Hotel would be very helpful.

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Ms. Toni at Hull and Oaks is so sweet and kind! Her service and company was on point, looking forward to coming back.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
Ok. Yum. This place has some very unique menu choices (get the pulled pork Benedict!!), and Cedrick is an incredible server!! Be patient (sometimes things take a minute...especially if they're understaffed), but know that it's worth the wait!!!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Food was eh, the restaurant was cold and drafty. I did the bottomless mimosa but unfortunately I had to track the server down so I only had 2. It was annoying to say the least. I won't go back even if I'm staying at the Laura
google avatar

Ashlea G.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant and ambiance! It looks like a luxurious place but it isn't.... Our waitress was unprofessional. She lacked tact and decorum. It's hard to say a restaurant is in a luxurious hotel when the staff looks and acts like this is their first job. She kept asking for our order and brought the checks before we were ready. She also told us certain dishes to avoid (fish n chips) and other dishes were just ok...Warning! I should've known this was going to be an awful culinary experience but I went ahead and ordered the Cobb salad, Cajun pasta and key lime cheesecake. I also should've checked Yelp first before deciding to try this place. Yelp doesn't lie! This is a 3 star place only because of the ambiance; NOT because of the food or service. My salad looked like something made at the grocery store and tasted like something anybody could've put together. My Cajun pasta had the same chicken on it that was on my salad. Pasta sauce was terrible. I took a bite and left the pasta alone. My cheesecake tasted like something that came out of party tray at Kroger. AWFUL! The only good thing was the waitress didn't make me pay for my meal. She knew the food wasn't good and basically told us that when we started ordering. #DONTEATHERE

Flor G.

Yelp
Tanisha was amazing!! the food was so delicious. Chef Ricardo did an amazing job. We highly recommend you check out the Hulk and Oak breakfast! And ask for Tanisha!!

Yelp
My husband booked reservations for Mother's Day and it was amazing! From the time we walked in, waited for our food, received our food and afterwards. We were greeted and seated immediately. While we waited a few moments for our waiter, we were given water and coffee. Once our waiter Cedrick came over, he gave recommendations and offered another menu option for our daughter instead of buying 4 different items a la carte. As we waited for our food, the manager stopped by, spoke to us, gave our daughter crayons and a flower to color. We ordered the Cowgirl, pulled pork Benedict & the breakfast. The cowgirl tasted like a grilled cheese w/meat & tomato soup. The pulled pork Benedict was sweet and savory. Sweetness from the pulled pork with bbq side & savory from the eggs and hollandaise sauce. The breakfast came with scrambled eggs, toast, sausage and potatoes. The food came out quickly and everything tasted great--flavorful throughout. Our picky eating daughter loved the potatoes, toast and sausage. Cedrick checked on us often, but not too much--perfect engagement. He was a great waiter. Overall, great service and food. We'll be back. We realized we've stayed here before& the room was really nice as well.

Zadaria H.

Yelp
Long wait for very, very subpar food. Love the Laura hotel but won't be back to their restaurant.

Grace D.

Yelp
Went for lunch 6/27/25 with a group of 10 total. Had reservations and was seated in private area which was nice except a weird picture on wall. Service was slooow but professional. Apps ordered received timely. Orders for food for 10 was taken. It took a long time (20+ min). When food came 1 order was missing. When waitress was asked about this she said the kitchen was really busy and missed it. Food was ok, not good for large parties.
google avatar

Yelp
Great restaurant! I always dine here while staying at The Laura. The breakfasts are top notch and they provide great service. Much thanks to servers Cedrick and Tonisha. Chef Ricardo makes an amazing egg croissant as well as other healthy choices. Great ambiance too! A must visit when in Houston!

Yelp
This restaurant is located within The Laura Hotel which just opened in November 2021. Located on the second floor of the hotel. Amazing service! Amazing food! The retro chic atmosphere and surrounding city views make for an enjoyable dinner. The menu is new American Cajun. My husband and I both had the smoked chicken with barbecue sauce, new potatoes and collard greens. Everything tasted fresh with so much flavor! The portions were beyond filling! Highly suggest checking this place out if I'm downtown!
