Where to Eat in Golden Hill

"Open 24 hours a day and known beyond the neighborhood for excellent burritos, Humbertos deserves a place among your go-to spots for taco shop fare. Those set in their ways might be hesitant, but the constant flow of faithful regulars ordering burritos and roll tacos is a testimony to quality." - Mario A. Cortez

San Diego’s Best French Fry-Packed California Burritos

"The constant flow of faithful regulars are a testament to this 25th Street institution’s quality and consistency. Humberto’s Taco Shop offers one of San Diego’s finest California burritos, loading in the right ratio of fries, seasoned carne asada, and pico de gallo onto a flour tortilla. If you are east of the Golden Hill area, Humberto’s runs a sister location on 47th Street near the 805 exit." - Mario A. Cortez, Candice Woo

A humble small seating configuration might make you overlook this absolute gem. Food seemed fresh, came off RIPPING hot, and was considerably larger than expected and that flavors were on point on my California burrito. The red and verde sauce were bright and vibrant, and they gave me more than enough without prompting. The cashier was attentive, friendly, and quick. Were I local, I'd be hitting this place often. I literally came here 10 minutes after another great meal in the neighborhood and still felt the value was there and food was great.

Flavor: B+ Service: A Tea: F Solo dining: A When my Lyft driver said this was one of her favorite taco shops and she’d never driven a tourist there, I knew I was in for a treat. Per her suggestion, I got the carne asada fries with a tortilla on the side. So I made my own burrito for the best of both worlds. The meat is flavorful and plentiful and it’s a great concoction. It needed more sauce and the salsa was a little spicy for me (but I’m a wimp on the heat) so that’s the only reason I can’t give it an A. The drink selection is very limited - mostly cans. It’s a lot of food for a reasonable price (which is a rarity in San Diego) so be ready to chow down.

Google
By far the best in San Diego! This is where the locals go! The chicken enchiladas were good, but the carne asada chips-supreme left us awestruck!😍 The salsas are also to die for! I brought the leftovers all the way back to the east coast! This is my go to spot from now on. Friends have raved for years; I finally get it! I ordered via DoorDash- service and delivery were quick/reasonable & the food was still piping hot!

Google
This place was recommended to me to try to satisfy my carne asada fries cravings. After a full day walking around SDCC, this place satisfied my cravings It’s definitely that old school hole in the wall type place. Small, order the counter with limited indoor seating. Parking can be difficult in the tiny lot and you may have to rely on street parking. Staff is great, very friendly, accommodating and helpful We got carne asada fries in small size for $14 which was enough for two meals. Love the skinny fries they use. Good portions of fries, guacamole, sour cream, and of course protein. Also go chicken enchilada and rolled tacos (forgot to take a picture bc we were hungry. Rolled tacos were just okay, nothing special. Chicken enchilada was delicious and not overly salty. Not a fan of their guac, it’s just too runny for my preference. It’s too much like a sauce Red sauce has a good kick, green sauce has too cilantro for my liking It’s a good place, would try the tacos next time, but their carne asada fries are great

Google
Every time we are in SD, we have to get Humberto's! Massive, flavorful burritos. We have had the steak and shrimp burrito and all of the breakfast burritos. So good! Today's breakfast was the steak egg and cheese burrito. Breakfast ends at noon, though, so come early.

Google
Not your average carne asada taco! The beef was seasoned so well you can taste it amongst the other ingredients in the taco. The amount was very generous as well, I ordered the two taco plate and it felt more like four tacos. The beans and rice were delicious as well. Another favorite factor was their red sauce, I’m a fiend for a red/orange sauce and they delivered!

Google
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but could never make the time to get here. They did not disappoint. I ordered the carne asada burrito and it was really, really good. The burrito was big enough to split between two people or to make two meals. I did split mine and had the second half of the burrito the next night for dinner. Tasted even better reheated. The carne asada was a nice cut of meat, cooked tender and perfectly marinated, no gristle. The rest of the ingredients were super fresh. The parking situation is very tight in this area, especially at lunch time, but if you're lucky enough to get a space inside their parking lot, it's all covered with solar panels, so it's shaded! A big bonus for a downtown fast casual eatery. I'll definitely be coming back to try other popular Humberto's suggestions.

Google
This is theeeee spot for carne asada fries! I saw a review they were the best so I had to try them for myself and they are so good!! The salsas are hot and so tasty and the beans are it!! They are cooked smooth and I absolutely loved them. Definitely a great spot for the cali style burritos and fries. I'll be back!

Yelp
Best carne asada fries! We got a small and fed two people easily. Add both the green and red salsa and it's perfect. Parking was easy - both in the plaza and surrounding area. Quick and very respectful service - will be back!

Yelp
I tried a "California" burrito for the first time! The steak was good but surprisingly a bit tough for me (I enjoy a medium-well steak). I also found it to be dry. It does come with hot sauces which I added to the burrito. I may be used to east coast versions that have more moisture in the burrito from beans, pico de gallo, or sour cream in the burrito. The french fries were bland and didn't add anything to the burrito for me. Disclaimer: These are my personal opinions, and no hate to the California-style burrito I will say the burrito was huge and very filling! One burrito is probably enough to split between two people, seriously! I also liked the Jamaican drink! It tasted like a sweet cranberry juice.

Yelp
This place is a must try! One of my top 3 places for Mexican food. Carne asada fries are my go to item. The fries are crunchy, the carne asada is perfect. Just everything goes well and they portion everything perfectly and don't skimp on anything. Their horchata is delicious as well! The service is great as well as they are very welcoming and always give salsa out! They updated the place but still plenty of seating and great place to eat!

Yelp
The Great: -Not a super busy plaza, so will always find parking -Food came out FAST -Generous, and I mean GENEROUS portion size Unfortunately, the food itself was lacking flavor. Most notably, the California burrito was a tad too dry for my liking. -If you're in it for best bang for your buck though, this place is worth it. I will note again: the portion sizes are GENEROUS!!

Levi L.

Yelp
Tried this place after so many recommendations. It wasn't very good. Ordered: California Burrito - extremely dry, loosely packed burrito. Pretty much just dry French fries and carne asada, with a bit of cheese. No gauc, no sour cream, no beans, no moisture. Didn't finish it. Carne Asada Burrito - Tons of guac and too much meat. Nothing else in the burrito. If you're on the fence about trying it, I wouldn't. Bummed it didn't taste better.
google avatar

Gordon D.

Yelp
I ordered the carne asada fries and a horchata. The fries were just average in taste and texture - it was kind of on the bland side. It wasn't even hot enough to melt the shredded cheese. I swear people are coming here when they're drunk, because this was a let down.

Yelp
Stopped in for a breakfast burrito this morning, chorizo, egg, and cheese. It was amazing. Service was and very friendly. Definitely recommend this place

Yelp
If you want huge portions, this is your place!! Also the service was absolutely impeccable. We went on a Friday at lunch time and there was a fair stream of business. I had a large order and I so appreciated the cashier double checking to make sure she had the order correct. The shop itself is pretty small but they had nice seating available and the inside was very clean and inviting. As noted, servings were huge. We ordered several different items...burritos, tacos and torta. Everyone loved their food. The chips were fresh and the salsas were nice and spicy. Definitely will return!

Yelp
This is my second time coming to Humberto's, and I loved it even more than the first! According to my friend who grew up in this neighborhood, they are known for their carne asada fries. And I can tell why! There are several layers of cheese along with layers of sour cream and guacamole. The salsas you can add are just the cherry on top. I really like the green salsa. The fries are just so flavorful and delicious, and every bite is filled with toppings. My husband got the chimichanga for the first time, and he absolutely loved it! It was a very good size, and tasted amazing. He definitely wants to order it again! The restaurant is very small with limited seating, but there is a parking lot with a good amount of parking spaces. The employees are very nice friendly, even when busy!

Yelp
Great burritos. I've had the California burrito with asada and adobada and both were super good. They're also enormous, so good value. The inside is tiny and kinda dirty, so more of a take out spot.
google avatar

Genovese L.

Yelp
Always a solid go-to for Mexican fast food. I feel like it is always busy here, no matter what time of the day I go. The parking lot can get tight, but there's street parking available too. The service is quick and friendly! Their carne asada fries and burritos have never disappointed. Definitely recommend Humberto's if you're in the area or looking to try a new Mexican shop!

Yelp
Another rec from my bro for the carne asada fries. It was huge and loaded up! Fed me and wife and sleepy kid and there were still fries leftover we couldn't finish. Order from counter as soon as you enter, lady was very friendly. The carne asada was tender and enjoyable but not particularly all that flavorful. But the supporting cast of flavorful cheeses and sauce, liquidy avocado? sauce, fresh delicious fries, along with the extra green salsa (lady initially put in red sauce but changed to green when I said I can't handle spicy), the overall combo was very comforting and addicting. Could not stop eating until beyond what I should have eaten, lol. If in need of some comfort food, I would grab the carne asada fries and go at it. Probably best eaten fresh and hot, we ate in the car and was comforted greatly, lol:)

Stephanie C.

Yelp
This was a solid spot for a California burrito. Portion was good, the french fries were crispy and fresh. I was bummed that guac was an extra $1.50 but it had to be done. I liked the red sauce over the green sauce, the red sauce had a good spicy kick to it while the green one was lacking a bit in flavor. I would say this place was just solid but nothing to write home about.

Yelp
This is absolutely one of the best taco shops in SD County. They have been around forever and the burrito action and Carne asada fries are amazing ... I go for California burrito meat well done with the green salsa to add with each bite

Yelp
Good carne asada burritos, red hot sauce, and spicy carrots (about 80 cents a bag). The carne asada tacos were so large, 2 of them cover an entire to-go box. I came here after a night of drinking in Downtown about a half hour before closing and it was busy, but the service was pretty quick. I'm knocking off 1 star because the woman at the cashier was rude and probably shouldn't be working in customer service. She refused to give us water cups until "later" even though we had already paid for our meal. The water cups were right next to her. I've never in my life not been given my water cup right away and then of course we all forgot.

Dianna R.

Yelp
I TRIED to call and place an order for pick up but the women who answered straight up clicked on me. Didn't say anything just hung up. If they don't do pick up orders then the polite thing to do would be to say so. The food is good but they need to learn some manners. I ended up going in to order and she was even more rude in person.
google avatar

Ed M.

Yelp
Ordered this through DoorDash. A friend recommended the carne asada fries. They were good but I still can't take them over my Super Sergio's fries. A contender for some of the best carne asada fries in SD? I'd put it up there.
google avatar

Mando F.

Yelp
You cannot beat it for the price. I've been coming here for the past 30 years! Try if you don't like it, call me
google avatar

Kristian T.

Yelp
This is my go to place for Carne Asada Fries. The value and taste can't be beat in SD. Parking can be tight sometimes but it is worth the wait of finding a parking spot. This place is gordito approved.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Several of us ordered breakfast tacos - to be picked up by one coworker. Burritos (I had the potatoes, egg & cheese) were all good sized and were tasty. One star removed as when our coworker arrived they weren't yet open at the time they should be.
google avatar

Mai H.

Yelp
Young cashier chick with the fake gold chains, gold rings, and fake long nails appears very miserable and unpleasant. Seems like she's forced by her family to be there. If she ain't family, y'all need to fire her already LOL! Anyways, the carne asada burritos were decent. Ordered 2 and ate half of each. One was extra salty; the other was alright. Probably won't be returning due to bad service.

Yelp
Humbertos Taco Shop is located in Golden Hill on 25th and Broadway just minutes from beautiful downtown, San Diego serving up some of the finest Mexican platters and burritos! I have always wanted to check this place out, but due to the parking situation, it was always hard to go since parking is limited and tight with cars entering and leaving in the business center. I managed to get a spot right before 11 on a weekday and was happy. As I entered the establishment, the menu was posted on the wall with prices. They have everything from tacos, enchiladas, and, of course, burritos! I went ahead and opted for the Carne asada burrito and had a seat in one of the 4 booths provided. Shortly after having a seat, my order was called, and I went to the counter to retrieve my order. I had to request red and green salsa since it wasn't in the bag along with a knife to cut it open. From the start, I noticed how big and packed the burrito was and how it was nicely wrapped in wax paper along with foil to keep its posture. As I cut into the burrito, I was amazed and shocked at how juicy the meat was and how the grease just fell onto the wax paper. I don't know about you, but I love a flavorful meaty burrito, so to me, that's just extra flavor! Quick time first, Bite and wowww it was just how I imagined. The meat was very juicy and well seasoned and marinated, which led to a nice tender cut of beef. The onions, tomatoes, and cilantro all played an important role with complementing the beef. The guacamole was nice and creamy and gave that cool effect to the meal. It was really nice eating the burrito, and in my mouth, I could feel the coldness from the Pico but the hotness from the beef and warm tortilla. The red hot sauce had a nice kick to it and was very tasty while the green sauce was much milder and pleasant. Overall, it was an outstanding burrito place in Golden Hill that serves up tasty Mexican food. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying maybe the Carne asada fries or enchiladas. Service was good, and the ambiance inside was nice just watching people come in and out for a quick, affordable, tasty meal.

Yelp
So it's 8:30 a.m. and we were literally driving off the airport property when my 17 year old says we're close to Mexico, "I'm hungry for tacos ". My first response was to say we're not getting tacos so early in the day. He plays on his phone for a second and says go to "Humberto's". We're on vacation so, why not be adventurous. Humberto's is in a divey looking strip mall, but some times the best food experiences come from divey places. Humberto's definitely filled that bill while also apparently open 24 hours a day. We didn't have the tacos and instead went with different breakfast burritos. They were large, filled to the max, extremely flavorful and a reasonable price. Humberto's was a great kick off meal to our San Diego adventure and can't wait to see what else we find.
google avatar

Francisco H.

Yelp
The exquisite generous portions of what you're getting and affordable prices make it a favorite spot for both quick bites and leisurely meals. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Humberto's Tacos is a must-visit destination for lovers of genuine Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

Yelp
Was heading over to Petco Park and needed a taco shop fix! I remembered Humberto's was nearby and had to stop by. Pro tip: call ahead and food was noted to be ready in 5-10 min. Parking in the plaza is rough, super tight spots... plenty of street parking -- though it can be busy as well. We ordered a California burrito and carne asada fries to share between two people -- but we only managed to eat just half of each with leftovers to spare! The cali b had good portions of cheese, meats, fries and pico. The carne asada fries was a good portion with lots of delicious flavors coming together. The green and red salsas are mild, not so spicy. Good pair with their delish foods. 10/10 recommend
google avatar

alexcia p.

Yelp
This place is a fantastic! Quick service and the tacos are HUGE, definitely getting your money's worth. My friend had the breakfast burrito and absolutely loved it. Both salsas are delicious and have just the right amount of heat.
google avatar

Yelp
My fiancés favorite go-to Mexican food restaurant in South Park and nearby. Very inexpensive, always a bit of a line because the servings are big and the staff is always friendly. The spicy carrots are a nice add on to anything.

Jenn C.

Yelp
My fave carne asada fries period in San Diego. I always get them with extra crispy fries so that they don't get steamed up on the drive home. They don't always pick up the phone but are quick with service. Parking can also be a pain. They're a typical order at the counter with limited booth space to dine in.
google avatar

Jeanette E.

Yelp
This place was better before the remodel. It's more expensive now and I waited 37 minutes for a veggie burrito. Aniken's Next door is better in my opinion and so is Los Reyes across the street and they have way better hot sauce.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
First timer guest here. We returned to this spot after picking up food during a DoorDash delivery. It smelled so good and the portions were a good size to share. It's a small restaurant with roughly 5-6 booth style seating options. It was a cool nite so I asked to shut one of the doors; and they allowed it. It was 5 of us and we ordered a Chicken Chimichanga, Carne Asada Quesadilla Plate, Carnitas Plate, Lg. Carne Asada Fries, an extra order of tortillas, a side of peppers, with 2 lg. Horchatas, and a Coke. The bill was about $60. The food had so much flavor and we all ate it the next day and was full all over again! The Horchata was super yummy; I enjoy that hint of cinnamon. No favorite on the plates. Everything hit!!! My only suggestion is to take the food to-go to eat comfortably at home. It's cooler at nites and I understand, for smoke hazard reasons, why the doors need to stay opened. I would definitely return and recommend.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Everything evolving food in this place is absolutely amazing, can't go wrong with anything! The service is great to, really treat you with respect! I recommend this place over everything!!

Yelp
I Recently went here, over the weekend, Saturday afternoon, day before Mother's Day & met Lupe & she is Absolutely Amazing & Kind. The Cashier also gave Pleasant Customer Service. I ordered Carneasada fries w no meat. And, I was going to be charged w $15. But, Lupe Kindly stepped in and removed $7 as the cashier is New. No problem. :) This place has been 5 stars in my book. And, if I could rate it, I would give 5 Stars due to Lupe's Excellent Customer Service & Kindness, (which I Absolutely Appreciate!) & from what I Remember, this place was really, good. So, I feel bad to do this. But, I have to rate it 1 Star , for now, due to the Order I received. Maybe it's new workers? Idk... But, the fries I received were over cooked. And, my stomach was rejecting it....Something about the dish tasted very Unhealthy....And, Lol, I know it's Carneasada fries. But, something in it didn't feel Right for me and my Body to eat. I was only able to eat about 1/4th of it and my stomach was sensing that maybe the oil or grease they used was bad. Due to what I ate, I got a stomach ache later that night for the 1/4th that I digested. I would Love to give a 5 Star Review, as I remember this was a Good Spot for Mexican Food to go, too. *My intention for writing this Review is so they may Correct whatever is going on & Know my Feedback. As Although, I Appreciated Soo Much their Customer Service. What I had ordered was, Unfortunately, disappointing.
google avatar

Angie C.

Yelp
5/5 bc it was good and prepared exactly how I wanted it and good customer service it was very delicious with extra crema and extra cheese how I asked for it
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
Humberto's is my go to taco shop here in San Diego and I don't even live close by. My two favorites on the menu have to be the carne asada fries and the California burrito and you can't forget there GREEN SAUCE some of the best green sauce in San Diego.
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
This taco shop is just ok. I wasn't satisfied after eating my food. I wouldn't recommend and I will not be back... We'll maybe just for the Tamarindo drink and that's it, not the food.
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
This has to be my favorite restaurant for Carne Asada fries! If you like crispy well done fries, Humberto's Taco Shop is your spot. They always come out smelling delicious and I can't stop myself from eating some right away. Sauces are refreshing and spicy too. I usually go for the red sauces with my food but the green one is really good. Good amount of meat, cheese, and I like that the toppings are simple. Definitely get their carne asada fries. Maybe one day I will try something else but their fries are unmatched! Love them!!
google avatar

Shirley O.

Yelp
They open early (at 6am). Their breakfast burrito is good, but they could reduce the amount of potato and add more egg. It's large enough to serve two people. Service is quick and and there were a few customers in line at 7 am.
google avatar

Ian V.

Yelp
I'm from Mexico City Even thought taco shops are American food omg this place does it right with the right ingredients and cook time with every orders. Never disappointed no matter what time of the day! @rhinov16 ig I rate a lot of places and this places never disappoints!!
google avatar

Omar R.

Yelp
Quick service and friendly staff! The food is great! I recommend calling ahead your food will be ready by the time you get there! One of the best spots in the area.
google avatar

Lili T.

Yelp
Came here with a couple friends to round off our night. This is my friend's go to spot when we're in the area and it was my first time here! I wanted something a little light so I opted for the fish taco which was fantastic. It was well seasoned and the batter was perfect, not too heavy. I will definitely be back here if I'm in the area!

Sam E.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars all around I would. I ordered a California burrito, and what I got was cold meat and french fries rolled in a dry tortilla, no cheese, no cream, no salsa, no nothing. Um what????? When I try to call to find out if there is anything to be done I get a voicemail box that - surprise surprise is FULL. This place is bullsh*t. You stole my money and I want it back. Highway robbery.
google avatar

Rod M.

Yelp
Food is just top tier, do not sleep on this place!! My go to at any time of day! Tacos are huge and could be a meal on its own. Carnitas plate though is where it's at!!
google avatar

King U.

Yelp
After losing both legs during a job gone wrong at a construction project I was working on, I was pretty angry with the world and just wanted some comfort food. I decided Humberto's looked well enough online to ease the pain of this existence. I was dead wrong. Humberto's is quite possibly the worst food i have ever eaten in my entire life. I wouldn't even serve this to a blind dog. Great ambiance!
google avatar

Chikis S.

Yelp
The asada fries and asada burrito are bomb. Service is awesome, especially if you're lucky enough to find Liz working, she's the best waitress at this place. She's always on top of recommendations and very hard working. She's never sitting or standing around. The place is always busy so parking is limited but if you find a place close enough to walk, it's totally worth it to eat from this taco shop. 25th st.
google avatar

Men D.

Yelp
I ordered a Cali burrito paid for them to add guacamole and beans my damn burrito had no guacamole and no flavor .
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
The food was so good and portions were huge. Definitely worth the price. It's a small location but close to the marina.

Jorge G.

Yelp
Pollo asado Burrito was super salty and the sauce is weak. Green sauce sucks, red sauce sucks. There's enough sodium in the chicken for 3 days. This restaurant can't make Mexican food.... And it's 10 dollars for a burrito. Hire some people from Michoacán or Jalisco... El pollo estaba bien salado La salsa está sin sabor y no sabe buena y te dan muy poquita en vasitos de prueba. 10 dollares por un burrito. Mejor váyanse al rey...
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I can't believe this is the first time I write a review for this place. Have been coming here for years. Always a great spot to hit up after a full night of drinking. Everything is delicious. I have had the nachos, the fries, the tacos, the tortas, quesadillas and rolled taquitos. They have never let me down. No matter how sober or drunk we are, it always satisfies. There is always a line, so be ready to wait a few minutes, but totally worth the wait! Trust! Everything is good!!
google avatar

Mike Y.

Yelp
Key takeaway: VALUE Local suggestion and it lived up to the hype. $10 Giant California burrito. Traditional Steak, fries, pico, and cheese. Only thing missing was the guacamole, which I would add next time. I also tried the rolled tacos which I give a 2.5/5 . Pretty bland, the guacamole overpowered the rolled beef taco. Still a great value @ $7 for a plate of 5. Add the red and green sauce to everything. So tasty and authentic. I will be coming back
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
This is my sister and I's new favorite taco shop. The employees are welcoming, friendly and diligent. The Cali burritos and rolled tacos are bomb but I personally prefer their fish tacos. I wish they would change the sauce they put on it though. It tastes like In n Out spread lol. But overall, this place is super good and a vibe. Go see for yourself. :)
