Where to Find the Best California Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The constant flow of faithful regulars are a testament to this 25th Street institution’s quality and consistency. Humberto’s Taco Shop offers one of San Diego’s finest California burritos, loading the right ratio of fries, seasoned carne asada, and pico de gallo into a just-blistered-enough flour tortilla. Make the order complete with an icy horchata (and five rolled tacos, if you’re extra hungry). For diners who are east of the Golden Hill area, Humberto’s runs a sister location on 43rd Street near the 805 exit." - Candice Woo

Golden Hill’s Favorite Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"Open 24 hours a day and known beyond the neighborhood for excellent burritos, Humbertos deserves a place among your go-to spots for taco shop fare. Those set in their ways might be hesitant, but the constant flow of faithful regulars ordering burritos and roll tacos is a testimony to quality." - Mario A. Cortez

I had absolutely the BEST fish taco EVER at Humberto’s this afternoon! I’ll admit I was very hungry, but the tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and other ingredients were fresh and crisp, and the white sauce (crema) was totally cold and fresh, perfectly complementing the hot and crunchy white fish. Yummm… what a flavorful mouthful! Humberto’s may look like the typical taco shop, but WOW! What outstanding flavors and excellent attention to detail the chef delivered with a humble taco can’t be overstated. Humberto’s food is truly amazing! The restaurant itself isn’t much to write home about, but the artwork/murals that adorn the place are pretty special. It’s worth a visit just to check out the mural on the exterior restaurant wall. Very cool. Check this place out for lunch or dinner sometime soon. You and your family will be very glad you did.

Google
California Burrito Ranking (4): Continuing my quest to rank San Diego's California Burritos! Stop number four: Humberto's Taco Shop. Product: The burrito was the largest I've ever seen, served incredibly quickly. It was fiery hot, almost too much so.Personally, I found the meat a bit dry. It's the cheapest burrito I've had in the city. They offer very spicy sauces. 5 out of 10 Service: The interaction was decent. 4 out of 10 Ambiance: Vibrant colors. Customers carve messages directly into the tables. When I arrived, it was quiet, but soon a large crowd formed and the line extended right to my table. 4 out of 10

The adobada fries are really good. Wish they had a bit more cheese.

This is the first place to visit for every trip to San Diego. The food is authentic and cooked to perfection. Service is great. Highly recommend.

WHERE DEADPOOL BUYS HIS CHIMICHANGAS! I came in because I was craving some yummy Mexican cuisine and also wanted to celebrate Deadpool's comic con weekend and to grab his fav food item (I know I'm weird haha). I'm glad I came here! You can tell this is a local hangout and the staff are pretty personable. It's in a borderline grimy part of town, however don't let it deter you, I recommend visiting! I ordered a chimichanga with chicken, green sauce and guacamole! It was AMAZING! The meal was perfectly fried and tasted so fresh. Some of the toppings provided were a little refrigerated so I didn't use them (I'm looking at you lettuce). I would recommend eating the chimichangas as they're served and with the toppings that they already placed on them. Don't add any of the other stuff they give you haha. Seating is minimal, don't expect to bring a large group as there's only a few small tables inside. I didn't spot any seating outside. The tables are a bit dirty inside so I would recommend takeout. Humberto's is a traditional taco shop, you order at the counter and wait for your order. Once you're called, you go back up to the counter to pick up your food. Note: I ordered fries and they were a little limp, like something you'd get at weinerschnitzel. Not bad, but could be firmer.

Google
Hands down best Mexican food in San Diego! Don't sleep on their carne asada burrito; the beef is charred perfectly, a taste I haven't experienced with any other taco shop in SD. Everything is delicious and incredibly priced: $6 for 5 rolled tacos, fully decked out? Insane! Best kept secret in SD.

Google
Best burrito spot with really good salsa verde. Super affordable spot, and excellent tasting food. I always recommend everyone there and they always tell me that they always go back. They accept Apple Pay which is really convenient. Super friendly staff.

Google
Love the food here, it's always good. It gets pretty busy and you might have to wait a little for your order to be ready but totally worth the wait. Among their bestsellers are the Carne Asada Fries & Rolled Tacos. Also, try the green salsa, it slaps! Service is great, they listen to substitutions and special requests but for an extra cost. Clean & family friendly, they have dining tables if you choose to eat there. The parking lot on the side of the building is theirs NOT the car wash's, use it!

Yelp
A go-to forever favorite! Humberto's Taco Shop on 43rd Street is that spot for me! total go-to and I'm absolutely obsessed. It's super close to my church, which made it convenient at first... but now it's one of my all-time favorite places, and I'll gladly drive here no matter where I'm coming from. Bonus points: they're open late, which I love. Their California burritos are solid, but I always go for the Asada fries- they're my main reason for coming. Just a heads-up: they have two sizes (a half and a full order), but you have to ask for the half or they'll automatically give you the large. I switch between the two depending on my mood. No complaints, though- it's still worth it either way. I do love their green salsa. It has a slight kick- I mean, I'm a salsa girly, so I love it. The red one is good, but I don't really care for it. The green one is my favorite. I always add pico de gallo for an upcharge, and sour cream if it doesn't already come with it. The fries already come with cheese and guac for sure. The only thing I'm a little bummed about is the price increase. For years, this place had the best prices in town, hands down. The half order used to be around $8 and the large was $10. Prices have gone up recently! The fries went up about $4/5 which I get, but dang- I miss the old deals! Still worth it, though. Customer service is always great, too. Everyone's super nice, and even when there's a line, they're surprisingly fast. Even in the midst of a rush, I've never encountered rude service. I'm telling you- this spot is amazing. I've tried a few tacos here and there- the fish tacos were good, but I mainly stick to the burritos and fries. I always get a side of rice and beans, and their rolled tacos are pretty decent too. Parking is hit or miss. There's a little lot in the back entrance near the car wash, but those spaces fill up fast. Thankfully, there's usually street parking nearby, so it's not too bad. Things to note: - They accept Apple Pay, cards, and cash- plus there's an ATM inside in case you ever need it, which is a nice little bonus. - No phone orders! they don't answer, and they don't take to-go orders that way either. Honestly, they stay so busy I don't blame them lol. Just shows how poppin' this spot really is. - As for seating, the place is a pretty fair size with plenty of seats. I've never really had a problem finding space, even during a rush. It's kind of 50/50 for me.. sometimes I eat there, sometimes I take it to go, just depends on the vibe. Only downside: there's no public restroom, so just a heads-up in case you're dining in. Fun fact: The owners are siblings! They have another location over on 25th Street, which I'll definitely be reviewing next. Gotta show love to the whole family. Okay, horrible the amount of times I've been here and still can't find a quick pic hahah. I'll definitely take time to look and add to this!

Yelp
As a San Diego native who grew up in SE SD, this is THE best taco shop in San Diego. I did a test once with some of the top carne asada fries in San Diego and Humberto's came in the #1 spot. The rolled tacos and California burritos are okay also. The service is always quick and there's not much of an ambience. Sure, it could be pretty shady if you come during off hours, but just act like you belong and don't do anything stupid. But I've also seen groups of Navy uniforms come in here to order/eat, so that's how good this spot is.

Yelp
I had heard that the California Burrito here at Humberto's was the best so I had to try it out for myself. I definitely still prefer La Perla better! The burrito here is good but it doesn't come with guacamole which in my mind is a key ingredient in a California Burrito. Otherwise service is good and the casual taco shop is exactly what I look for when it comes to the best Mexican food out there.

Yelp
One of my favorites places to get a carne asada chimichanga. Comes with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. The chimichanga is a huge and packed with carne asada, meat is well seasoned and juicy. Store front is always packed but food comes out fast. There is a small parking lot behind that restaurant but is a hit or miss with parking, with most people look for parking on the street or neighborhood.

Yelp
The asada fries are 10/10! We went when we arrived late night and they were so kind and so funny! They gave us extra cups because we needed some for the hotel room & they were laughing with us about enjoying our night! The price is decent and I would recommend getting the regular size over the large as the large is so much food & drink! Their avocado salsa that goes in the fries is amazing. The place was in a corner and it was small but there are tables inside to sit at.

Yelp
I've heard so many god things about the food at Humberto's so I was excited to try it! I got the 5 rolled tacos and a carne asada burrito, and oh they were delicious! Loved the topping on the rolled tacos, and the meat on both was seasoned and cooked so well! The burrito was a great size and was so yummy I forgot to take a picture. Their prices are very fair and they have a good sized menu so I'm excited to come back and try some more! The only reason for the four stars instead of five is that parking was very confusing and hard to find. There was a small parking lot, but other than that you have to find street parking.

Yelp
This place was recommended by someone claiming that the CA burritos are better than Lolita's. Now, everyone is San Diego knows that recommending Lolitas for CA is getting pretty tough and I can't seem to get that same CA burrito high i used to get. Here are my thoughts on this place; I arrived and it was packed. However, there was tight parking in the back. They accept cards and cash. I got a little nervous after seeing the ATM machine but then I saw someone paying with their phone. Price we paid including taxes was 39 dollars for 2 Calis with sour cream and two horchatas (small and large). The receipt said the small horchata was 7 dollars and the large was 4.50. I think that's too expensive so I'll give them a 3/5 for price. Taste wise was excellent. 5/5 and totally beating Lolitas hands down. My once concern is that of what you can see in my photo. Where is the sour cream? They added a little bit on the top but I expect it to be smothered from top to bottom for an additional 2 dollars for sour cream. I will be saying goodbye to Lolitas for their Calis and coming here from now on.

Yelp
Of all san diego taco shops i have visited this is the poorest ive ever been served. I have been coming there for years i stopped going for around 2 years i decided to finally eat there again and was very disappointed hardly any guac or meat for the price and the fries were too soggy i also added extra chese and as you can see in the picture i got otherwise

Perla V.

Yelp
Cashier Perla was rude and unprofessional. Cussed in Spanish to customers that accidentally spilled their drink !!!

Levy S.

Yelp
This taco shop has the best carne asada fries and a very good horchata always a good choice if u craving Mexican food highly recommend

Yelp
The only taco shop I'll go to for carne asada fries! I make the 20 min drive to go get my carne asada fries here! We usually get carne asada fries & roll tacos here. The fries are stuffed & they give a good amount. As for the roll tacos, we add pico de gallo to them & it adds a good taste of freshness (makes me feel like I'm eating "healthy" lol) The cashier is always friendly & the wait time can usually be like 10-20mins. The inside has a couple booth tables & 2 entrances to the place. They can get busy during the evening & weekends but totally worth the wait!

Mairyne C.

Yelp
Its so unfortunate that the food is so good here but the customer service is awful. When taking orders the cashiers rush you asking "what else?" immediately after everything you order something. I have came here for so long and they have about a 50% chance of getting the orders right. When you confront them about getting your order wrong they respond with a crazy attitude and treat you like you did something wrong. Food is so good but I wish the customer service reflected this.

Daniel Q.

Yelp
Told the rude ass lady taking my order not to put pico de gallo in my burrito TWICE & then went back up for a 3rd time after checking my receipt the whole time taking my order WHILE ON THE PHONE and she told me it was ready. Terrible customer service. $15.00 by the way. Don't go here.

Yelp
I tried this for the first time today because a bunch of my friends were recommending it. It's one of the top Mexican fast food places in SD. I tried their carne asada fries and they were really good. They load up the plate and it can feed a family of 4. They are not cheap with their add ons, the plate already came with sour cream, cheese, guacamole and pico. Their hot carrots were really good too.

Yelp
This place is pretty unassuming, but serves up some legit California burritos. Parking could be difficult (as it it is only street parking next to a tire shop and the residential), but I was able to find a parking spot right across the shop. I walked up to the counter and the cashier was very friendly and helpful. I ordered 2 California burritos. We sat down on the tables and waited for our orders. After a short wait, we got our burritos and I was able to ask for the salsa verde and salsa roja. If you're in the mood for dessert, there was a lady selling desserts (I'm unsure if they were unaffiliated or affiliated with the restaurants) and they looked pretty good. The burrito was worth the wait. I took the first bite and was satisfied....the combination of beef and fries was great! The addition of the salsa verde made it even better! I decided to add the salsa roja and was pleasantly surprised by how spicy it was. Be careful with the red sauce!
google avatar

Peter Z.

Yelp
This place is authentic, delicious, fast, and affordable. Everything you could ever want in your neighborhood Mexican place, and much better than some over hyped places like tacos El Gordo or Oscars. The location is a bit sketchy, but like come on... Isn't that where the best Mexican food is? And like when I'm done eating, you can feel it on the way out the next day if you know what I mean, but that only adds to the excellence that is Humerto's! But actually though, I wouldn't overdo it on their salsa as it can be quite spicy. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this as a go to quick take out place for authentic and cheap Mexican food!
google avatar

Rockie E.

Yelp
I would give a -0 !!!! I waited for 10min the Helfer told me they were waiting for register tape... as soon as I am leaving they start taking orders again!! DONT GO HERE .. WASTE OF FUC$EN TIME!!
google avatar

Saliha M.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible fries. So soggy and drenched in oil. Never coming again. Gross and disgusting to say this is carne asada fries after making an actual edible and beautiful one the first time I been here. Quite the bamboozling experience
google avatar

Yelp
Been craving a chimichanga for a month or so now, so I decided to stop by here. Have had their tacos before and those are AWESOME so figured why not. Surely didn't disappoint!!! Service was friendly, food order was fast, green salsa was good........ And the Chimi??? DAMN good!!!!!! Good flavor meat, a little of everything that's supposed to be in it with pick & lettuce on the side. I'll probably have my next chimi here in about 6 months when I get the craving again!!!
google avatar

N M.

Yelp
It would have been 5 stars but the food is very greasy. However the food is delicious and so cheaply priced. I definitely recommend coming here! They're pretty fast as well. The service was excellent, the lady at the register was polite.
google avatar

Leanna R.

Yelp
I grew up in the neighborhood that this place is in. I've been eating there forever. The food is always good and great prices. Can't beat it

Maria G.

Yelp
Use to love coming here but its a whole mess now, there's this short Mexican lady thats so rude and unpleasant and that is always there at night . She doesn't give any salsas and when you ask for something to be ln the side they say they're not able too. When in the past they've always been able to. When in reality its the cook saying he doesnt want to do extra work. Also keep in mind if you're allergic to something theyll say sorry we cant. Last time I asked for beans on the side and they argued and said they couldnt do it and when I mentioned if someone is allergic how can you refuse to accommodate? They wanted to say they couldnt because its already spread and made before hand when i mentioned I always have gotten the same order in the past and nevr had an issue they they did it and idk what they put in it but as soon as I finished eating it, it made my stomach hurt and made me shit all over for a good amount of time. Not what they use to be they need to get rid of that short Mexican lady who's always so rude
google avatar

Niko N.

Yelp
Had a great night out with the wife and kids at this spot. We ordered three California burritos, five rolled tacos, and carne asada fries--everything was delicious and fresh. The portions were generous, and they don't skimp on the hot sauce! The service was quick, and the fact that they're open late is a huge plus. This place has been around for years, and it's easy to see why. We'll definitely recommend it to family and friends
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
This little taco shop is legit! It's your classic hole in wall type place with delicious food. Inside definitely looks a little run down and the burglar bars that go up to the ceiling to protect the employees is classic. They should absolutely be out of harms way so we can keep ordering tacos. I had 2 carne asada tacos with beans and rice. Tacos were overflowing with meat and well seasoned. Red and green sauce both have a nice bite to them without burning your lips off.
google avatar

Joel S.

Yelp
Humberto's is always amazing!! The food is great and the price is fare. Great customer service and I like the new upgraded amenities - i.e. new menus board and new wooden ceiling. There is also added security cameras. The line was long but it moved quickly. The carne asada burrito was juicy and tender. The chicken asada was well seasoned. I come here all the time when I am coming from LA. Nobody does taco shops like the way they do it in San Diego! 5

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food has fully been missed. Living In Dallas for over a decade, I mostly only Get home sick when I start craving Mexican food/taco shops They have a ton of taco shops here in Dallas, Only you'll never understand my struggle until You've experienced San Diego taco shops . The funny part is they even have a couple Of taco shops out here in Dallas called "San Diego taco shop ". No , they don't suck but they have tex-Mex vibe and taste to them and you will be disappointed if/when after trying some actual food from San Diego California. Humberto's has been over relevant for many Years, and because of their extended hours of Operation. I remember clearly this little Hole in the wall taco shops being a popular spot for many after the club or other late night activities. Business is always booming here which Is why I'll never understand why they haven't done renovations to make the place bigger . Street parking is alway Unavailable and the Tiny parking lot shared with another little business(car wash) is always crowded and hectic. The Food was amazing just how I remember it . Each visit I was a greedy pig and ordered two items at once

Daisy L.

Yelp
Decided to try the California burrito and sooo disappointed. Super dry and no sour cream. It couldn't even be saved with the red salsa bc even that was bad.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Decided to try this taco shop after LA Tryguy reviewed it and I was Extremely disappointed. Ordered the rolled tacos which looked very good but once I bit into half of it, I couldn't figure out what type of meat it was and also had no flavor to it. We als o Ordered another flavorless dish which was the enchilada plate...Yuck! I got sick as soon as I got home. Maybe it was an off day because they do have pretty good reviews but, I can honestly say I will never go back.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
listen i love the food here but the prices are getting a little crazy, i understand inflation has an impact but I genuinely feel as tho customers should NOT be charged extra for avocado on a california burrito
google avatar

Stefanie L.

Yelp
Best Taco Shop in San Diego Beef Tacos are good Rolled Tacos are Good Carne Asada Fries are good California Burritos are good Carnitas Plate is good Carne Asada Plate is good. Salsa Verde is good. Gets crowded. Delicious food !! Been Good for over 30 Years

Yelp
The food at Humberto's was good, I really don't have much to say about the place because I went through their drive thru.
google avatar

Marbell W.

Yelp
hands down the best taco shop on earth !!!!! Been eating here since I was a child , I would recommend this taco shop to anyone , make sure u try the pollo asada fries & chips fire emoji

Yelp
This place is small but mighty. We came to SD a little over a month ago and have been looking for our home taco shop. We finally found it here at Humberto's. The crispy ground beef tacos are TO DIE FOR. Plenty of flavor and a perfectly crispy shell. My boyfriend got the Machaca plate and the beef is juicy, flavorful and tender. We also got 5 rolled taquitos and they were the best I've ever had. The guacamole is nice and creamy too. The salsa is hot so test it before you drown your tacos with it. We will be back over and over again. You gotta try this place!!

Krys B.

Yelp
The Carne Asada is the bomb. My favorite things to order is the Carne Asada Chimichanga, and Carne Asada Torta. The guacamole, and pico is always fresh and tasty. The service is great. The lady that takes the orders, is always on the ball. This place is a little ruff around the edges, but the food makes it all worth it. What I love most about this taco shop is that it's very affordable. I can feed my family for a decent price. I recommend this taco shop.
google avatar

Cullin W.

Yelp
Some the best Mexican food in San Diego. Customer service is on point and no matter what you order from this establishment I guarantee it will be very delicious and warm/hot
google avatar

Isaac P.

Yelp
This taco shop never disappoints, and it comes with added entertainment. Five stars because the food is great and appropriately priced for the quantity & quality of the food. As far as entertainment, there are questionable characters coming in and out because of the neighborhood (I've lived in this area for years now) and generally if you don't bother them they won't bother you. Most of the time, I order to go anyway. I'm normally a red salsa type of guy, but admit that the green salsa slaps.
google avatar

George E.

Yelp
One of the few decent price Mexican Food spots, portions are adequate. Not necessarily the best tasting although no complaints but they know how to run a business, for this reason I support and buy my Mexican food from here.
google avatar

Leanne C.

Yelp
Service is fast here. This location has less of a wait/line compared to Humberto's on 43rd! It's just a smaller taco shop compared to 43rd. I usually order Carne Asada Fries with no guacamole. Extra crispy fries with onions and cilantro. I also get the red sauce cause it is fiiiirrrreee!
google avatar

Marcos N.

Yelp
I ordered the carne asada fries 1/2 order and added some adobada to it. I must say it was delicious .... Great food...

Emma H.

Yelp
sooo bomb food has always been a 10/10. same with service being quick. i love the carne asada fries they're just soo good! prices are so good and inexpensive which makes me always want to come back. def have to try more on the menu. their burritos are also really good i love the california burrito specifically. the horchata is an 11/10!!! not a lot of seating but honestly has never been a problem the times i've gone and wouldn't even mind eating in my car. definitely recommend this place if you're around the area!

Dkjah S.

Yelp
I'm on my lunch break in a rush to grab some food , when i received my food barley any carne asada & little bit of guacamole and a whole bunch of fries on my plate. went back up to see if they can remake my food, she tells me no, then precedes to say " next " customer. Then she claimed i " ate " the food. So I said can i have my money back ... she indeed refunded me but the moral of my story is yall treated me bad & could've remade my food but it's good. I got something for y'all asses, y'all had a big ass cockroach on the wall one day a friend and i seen it & took pictures of it. So guess what? I'm calling the health department on y'all .. how do you like them apples ??
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
The food was so good I came back on day 2! The Taquitos were great, huge portions on the regular tacos, and the Quesadilla was "Major Fuego"! So far, everything I've tried was great. Very flavorful and I'd definitely recommend you try this place if you're in the area. Nothing beats a taqueria in the middle of a neighborhood and this place did not disappoint. Grab your food, sit down and enjoy the full SD experience!

MoMo N.

Yelp
This place is not 24 seven as advertised I gives it four thumbs down I came after a night of grieving my grandpa. This is one of his favorite places to get a burrito and he told me that he remembered that they were open 24 seven and I came to find out tonight. They are not rest in peace Gramps.

Marlen M.

Yelp
The best taco shop in town! My go-to are the rolled tacos. You can't go wrong with this place.
google avatar

Chidozie E.

Yelp
Just stopped by and ordered the carne asada burrito with just meat and cheese. Burrito was pretty big and the meat was drenching with meat juices or possibly oil. Either way that shit was fuego . Highly suggest you order the green sauce cuz that was pretty bomb too. I'm not a fan of the red sauce. I just got a new taco shop spot for that area. I highly recommend it for others to try. Definitely one of the better taco shops in SD.
google avatar

Ria E.

Yelp
I like their carne asada fries better than Lolita's! Add fresh pico, so good!!! You can also request for extra crispy meat!!

Jamaica R.

Yelp
Burrito was so skinny, more tortilla than meat, I would have gone to another place of I would have known they were the size of a Taco Bell burrito. The burrito was way overpriced for the size, they know they're wrong.
