The Best Bagels in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Freret Street’s Humble Bagel has been a staple in the University area for years, supplying fat, fluffy bagel breakfast sandwiches and coffee to college students and Uptown families. For a long time it was New Orleans’s only dedicated bagel shop, but that changed in 2022 when Flour Moon Bagels opened on the Lafitte Greenway." - Clair Lorell

The 17 Best Restaurants in New Orleans’s Freret Neighborhood | Eater New Orleans

"Humble Bagel founders Casey Mackintosh and Tara Mikhail dreamed up this New York-style bagel shop for their adopted hometown and they get it right. Watch the process of hand-rolling and kettle-boiling the bagels fresh daily. The crunchy rounds come in a bunch of flavors (salt, yay!) including daily specials (Sunday is chocolate chip) and can be ordered by the dozen or as sandwiches and with schmear. Note: Humble Bagel is closed for summer break June 28 through July 14, 2021, returning July 15." - Beth D’Addono

First of all, there are no better bagels than New York style bagels purchased and eaten in NEW YORK! 😂 I’m in the Big Apple pretty often and my family and I will go straight to a crazy delicious bagel shop in Long Island after Sunday church service. So much has changed in my city since Katrina that I decided to Google something I’d never searched for in NOLA…a NY style bagel shop. Well…I found Humble Bagel not too far from home so of course I had to check it out. I pictured a line outside the door similar to my favorite Long Island bagel shop but much to my surprise, the line was short. There were quite a few people waiting for their orders but they were in and out in no time. Food: Legit! Totally NY style and my everything bagel was EVERYTHING!!!! I ate half for breakfast and the other half for lunch. I wish my bagel was still nice and hot/toasty when I received it but it wasn’t. However, it was still delicious! Service: Professional, friendly, and great smiles!!! 😊 Atmosphere: NEW YORK style bagels served with NOLA 💜💛💚 love. It doesn’t get any better than that! I’ll be back for my must have cinnamon raisin toasted with plain cream cheese 🥯

I noticed when I was visiting friends in New Orleans that this neighborhood bagel shop usually has lines out the door so I decided to give it a try. And I am so glad that I did! Wonderfully dense bagels that are the perfect compliment for the housemade, addictive spreads that I couldn't get enough of. Definitely worth the wait.

Google
Humble Bagel not only makes the best bagels I've eaten yet, but the staff is super kind and the menu has so many combinations that I would only tire of their offerings after several consecutive months of daily visits. Lots of drinks too, and in a pretty hip area. Will visit again when I return to New Orleans!

Humble Bagel comes highly recommended by my daughter. She has sung their praises for years. I finally got to try it Thursday May 30th. I liked it so much that I came back the very next morning! Thursday, my wife and I shared a plain bagel with veggie cream cheese, and a sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese. Friday, we split an Egg, Ham, and Swiss on a plain bagel and cinnamon-raisin bagel with plain cream cheese. Everything was delicious! Service is great and prices are reasonable.

Google
So, the three stars doesn't mean it's bad. It means they sell bagels and cream cheese and lox like other bagel establishments. And I would go back there and have been back many times. However, they close at 1pm or when they sell out. And they open at 7am. They don't take phone orders. So, it's like every place else mainly. And I will be back. Perhaps if they made something interesting like sweet potato bagel knots and they tasted amazing it might be a five. But since there is nothing signature about them ( homemade doesn't make it special that's expected) a three it is.

Google
These bagels are phenomenal. Two thumbs up from a Northeast bagel snob! And don't sleep on the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches.

Google
Although there are not alot of Food options the Bagel assortment is pretty solid. We ordered Bagel Breakfast sandwiches. The taste was also very good. The only thing that would make this place better would be a few more coffee options. There is a good Coffee Shop very close so maybe that is the reason they just carry a basic option.

Google
Not impressed with the outcome. Creme cheese is low quality and tasted overbearing of Sriracha, and bagel was messy. Flavor wasn't great. Couldn't taste the salmon, capers or even bagel with the supposed creme cheese that didn't taste like creme cheese.

Yelp
Great stop for a New York bagel in New Orleans. What a great value for delicious bagels. $20 for a dozen or $3.50 for a toasted bagel with cream cheese. The everything bagels are so good. Add cream cheese for a perfect Sunday breakfast. Love the veggie cream cheese, but they have an assortment of daily and seasonal flavors. May try their honey whole wheat everything bagel next visit. Sit inside or outside. Nice for a walk on Freret on a sunny Sunday morning.

Yelp
The bagel is worth the wait! Everything is very fresh there my sister and I go all the time. One of my favorite bagel spots in nola!

Yelp
They are so good here y'all. The staff, the bagels, the OJ. It's all wonderful. You can watch bagels baking as you wait in line to order. Highly recommend coming here and coming early. (The even have an early bird special for folks who come before 8:00am)!

Yelp
Humble Bagel is love at first bite. I have tried many bagel shops, but I can confidently say that a humble bagel is the best bagel I've ever had. I go out of my way to come here once a week for a breakfast sandwich and to stock up on bagels for the week (pro tip: the day you buy them, slice them in half, put them in a zip lock bag in the freezer, and pull it out when you want it and toast as normal for it to taste fresh even days later!) I've tried pretty much every type of bagel they offer and my personal favorite is their sourdough bagels which sadly are only available one day of the week as a special. However, their everything bagels are pretty spectacular too. Humble bagel is a very popular spot and it gets pretty crowded on weekends. The line is often out the door especially when the weather is nice. I wish they made bagels later in the day too because they close once they sell out, and sometimes they sell out earlier than you would expect!

Yelp
Decent bagel Rude staff Horrible hours Not getting the long lasting hype at all Pretty standard

Nola T.

Yelp
Bagels are consistently better than Flour Moon. Sometimes the staff is irritating, but that's life.

Yelp
The services here is very amazing and the bagels are very tasty. And the all the workers are very happy friendly and fully of joy . But I do I have one complaint about one worker I think his names Sam he's very nasty , he take orders incorrectly and I Experienced him take my order a few time incorrectly, but other than that everything is great !!! The setting of the place is beautiful .

Yelp
If you are from NY, your search is over for a bagel!! We couldn't stay away from here lol. We stood at an Airbnb near by, and we went any chance we had! Try them out! I promise you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Wonderful bagel shop! Came here the other day after not being here for probably a year or so. The quality of their bagels is the best around. Freshly made bagels that are just perfect. Easy to bite through and then it is chewy and dense in the middle. There was a bit of a wait when I went this past Thursday as the shop was busy. Ordered a poppy bagel with jalapeno cream cheese. If you like things a little spicy you won't be disappointed with the jalapeno cream cheese. Just enough kick to be noticeable. Overall love this place. Wish I lived closer to it as I would be a regular. All of the local and federal mandates during this time were being enforced (social distancing, masks required, etc) so that was much appreciated.

Yelp
Delicious & no line. The guy taking the order seemed annoyed that we were there, but other than that we got the bagel to go, and it was delicious enjoyed elsewhere

Yelp
Good bagels but for $2.50 per bagel (no butter or cream cheese included)... it better be. I was planning to order something cooked but it was easy to see (given the open layout) that all of the people behind the counter and in the kitchen were high school or college students who didn't have a clue what they were doing at the cooktop.

Yelp
I the bagels here. They are always fresh and tasty this is a great grab and go option too!

Yelp
First time trying humble bagel and I love it. There aren't many good bagel shops in NOLA, so I wanted to give this place a shot. I had heard good reviews from my friends from New York that humble bagel was the most like bagels they could get at home. I have to say it was really good. The bagels were big and fluffy. All made daily. I got there a little late so they only have plain and wheat bagels left but I wasn't complaining. I got the lox bagel. My go to at any bagel shop. So good! I did ask for scallion cream cheese and I got regular, but I was so hungry I didn't care.
google avatar

Billie M.

Yelp
They need a different name because they are far from humble. The word to describe the staff is just rude. I got there on a Sunday after church and was told that not only are they out of bagels but if I should have gotten there earlier.

Yelp
Pandemic update: HB is open from 7-12 (or until they run out) Thursday- Sunday. Last night I was really really craving a bagel with cream cheese so went over to HB's social media and discovered that they are open with social distancing. So I walked over this morning. They've used their small tables as a barrier for their employees to keep them safe and distant. Everyone was wearing masks and they had markers on the floor to keep everyone apart. I was tempted to get a sandwich... that veggie mix which looks delish (and is vegan) or the egg and spinach or ... or ... but I got my standard poppyseed bagel with strawberry cream cheese! Easypeasy

Yelp
I went hoping for the best of the basics. A toasted bagel with butter. The line was long, not biggie. It's the weekend. Where to go? My friend ordered a bagel sandwich and we strolled down the block to kill some time. Came back after about ten minutes and it was only a short while thereafter that we were called. I was so excited for that toasted crispy buttery goodness. It was cold. I would argue if it had ever been toasted but there was one little corner that had a little tan part to it. And the butter? Well, when it's cold, it just doesn't flow well. So I went home, re-toasted it and threw butter on it to make it less... rubbery. It was okay, but I can't figure out why everyone was there unless there's just no better place in the area for breakfast. The sandwich was also just meh. It was warm, which helps, but fairy lackluster otherwise. If you aren't picky, I'm sure it's fine, but if you want a great bagel or breakfast? Please don't waste your time.

Michael G.

Yelp
We are always searching for New York bagel spots in different cities and Humble Bagel did not disappoint. Plenty of inside and outdoor seating options, quick service and a great place for a morning coffee. To consider: only street parking available and certain bagels will sell out if you go later in the morning. Overall, lovely place!

Theo G.

Yelp
Bagels tasted stale and were insanely overpriced. Just not good. They should take a field trip over to Steins Deli and see how it should be done.

Matthew B.

Yelp
The quality of the bagels is perfect. The lox is my favorite but they do a wonderful job with all of it. Don't expect anything fancy, but great bagels with cream cheese or breakfast sandwiches. The cold brew and fresh OJ is great, recycle the jars for a dollar off!

Yelp
If you want some of the best bagels in the city, look no further. I had been craving for a bagel sandwich, so I immediately headed out to this spot to get one. It's like bagel heaven in there, so many delicious options to choose from. I decided on the plain bagel sandwich with egg whites, Turkey sausage, and cheese. That bagel sandwich was loaded. I also got the honey wheat bagel, it was so soft and fresh. The line moved pretty fast, which was great because they had a nice crowd.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Picked up half a dozen Bagels here on Saturday. The line was crazy long but it moved quickly. When I finally made it up to the counter, they were out of the everything bagel which was disappointing but only made me want to go back for it. My family tried the onion, poppy seed, sesame and cinnamon raisin. I also picked up a plain cream cheese spread and the vegetable spread. We all really liked the vegetable, it had a little but of a spicy kick to it. ( not too Hot that it wasn't enjoyable, but really nice). The breakfast sandwiches sounded good. Will be back, these are the best bagels I've had in Nola.

Yelp
Reviews, like bagels, can get stale. Here is an update: Humble continues to provide fresh hot bagels, sometimes still carrying the heat from the original cooking process (which is the BEST time to enjoy one). They are larger and a little breadier than my favorite NY bagels, but that also serves to provide a better platform for making a whole meal out of a single bagel sandwich. On recent visits, the hot sandwich trade looked to be about as big or bigger than bagels for take-out. Usually I'm in the latter group--the taker-outers--and Humble still provides an appropriately delicious platform upon which to mount all those great slabs of smoked salmon certain far-flung relatives send us every holiday. Five stars. In NYC, it would probably be four, but I challenge anyone to find a better bagel within 500 miles of 30° N -90°W.
google avatar

Kelsie M.

Yelp
Lines are long, but the bagels are awesome! Also really like that they have fresh squeezed OJ in reusable jars and you can bring it back for a discount on your next visit. Pretty neat!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent bagels and awesome staff!!! Wish you make a tad more chocolate bagels on Sunday!

Yelp
Good bagels. Food was very filling. Service was quick. Be sure to get there early before they sell out

Yelp
My wife and I recently visited Humble Bagel for a quick breakfast. I had the Everything Bagel with Roasted Garlic and Herb Cream Cheese. The bagel was nicely toasted with a crisp outside and a soft inside. The cream cheese was flavorful and deliciously garlicky. This is a place I would visit frequently if I were a local.
google avatar

Nicola J.

Yelp
This is a great NY style bagel shop. Very friendly staff! The bagels are fresh, really that specific salty crisp NY kind of taste.
google avatar

Tyler M.

Yelp
Humble Bagel is definitely one of the premier spots to grab a bagel in New Orleans. They have a solid selection of bagels and cream cheeses to go along with traditional breakfast items like bacon and eggs. I went on a Saturday morning and they had a line but it moved quickly. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on an onion bagel with chive and strawberry cream cheese. Everything was great, but the eggs were scrambled a little too hard for me. (Next time I'll see if they can do a fried egg) Side note: their orange juice is to die for. Overall, I for sure had a great experience and will be back.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
My living circumstances upon my first visit forced me to store my half dozen bagels in my bedroom, which ended up being a torturous experience, as the delectable aroma which penetrated even the layered bags I wrapped them in was difficult to ignore. This is not to say that the bagels didn't satisfy the other senses; their slightly chewy texture evinced a clear differential outside and in, and they looked the part as well. The bagels were satisfying on a level I'd not had in some time. More expensive that what you'd get at a grocery store or elsewhere, but worth it. The place itself is rather nice should one want to eat there, offering indoor and outdoor seating and a similarly intoxicating ambient aroma. My main source of disappointment with them was that they ran out of their daily special sourdough flavor before I arrived. I can only imagine how good it will be.

Dan A.

Yelp
Being from New Jersey, I consider myself a bit of a bagel expert. This bagel exceeded our expectations and more! It's perfectly crisp on the outside, while pillowy and soft inside. The bacon and eggs were cooked perfectly (I prefer a fried egg, but I know to ask next time) and the hand squeezed OJ was perfect. Would recommend this bagel spot to anyone and I think they'd succeed anywhere in NJ or NY as well!
google avatar

Tammie W.

Yelp
Thank you, Humble Bagel for being open on Memorial Day weekend. The thousands of tourists that flock to your city certainly appreciate it! I'll make this review nice and sweet. The service is quick and delightful, the bagels are boiled instead of proofed in the oven which makes for a chewier better bagel and how NY does it. Take the everything bagel, toast it and top it with eggs, cheese and bacon. What you get is a giant sandwich that's incredibly tasty, cheesy and hot! Take note though- they serve drip coffee but no espresso which I love. It's simple and to the point.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
My all-time favorite bagel shop! On days I want a little something extra, I love their breakfast sandwiches, which are so filling and yummy. But for classic bagels, Humble also always hits the spot. I am a fan of the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese (SO SO GOOD). Definitely try to go early on the weekends if you can because they sell out quickly and you don't want to risk them not having your favorite kind of bagel! Plus, then you won't have to wait in line.
google avatar

Yelp
Went for a walk on the famous Feret Street. There are lots of shops and many cafes to stop and grab a bite to eat. Humble Bagel is the spot for delious breakfast sandwiches or any bagels. Fresh ingredients and friendly staff. The prices are reasonable and the worth it!!

Yelp
I tend to go to Humble Bagel once a week. When there are bagels to be eaten, they are good! Their cinnamon raisin bagels (the only reason I go) could use a bit more raisins but overall should be good start to anyone's day. However, my past couple visits have left me ranging extremely dissatisfied to downright infuriated. I've encountered numerous times where they have run out of raisin bagels before 10 AM. They mention on their website "We proudly sell out. To enjoy our bagels, please come early." But if you are running out of one of the most popular bagel types that exist before 10 AM in the morning, I am sorry, but you need to be making more bagels. Again, this has happened multiple times, which is an issue that needs to be rectified. There *clearly* is constant demand for this bagel - why are you proud of not meeting demand? Also, every now and then they will completely mess up your order (like they did today!). It's infrequent, but it's worth checking your bags before you leave if you're doing to-go orders. Despite these shortcomings, when everything goes right the bagels are delicious, and that's what has kept me coming back every week. (It also may have something to do with this place being the only bagel shop in the vicinity). However, if these more recent problems I've stated continue to persist, I will have to cut it there. Hopefully this review, and the many others I have read like it, will be a catalyst for some change. At least make some more on weekends, if nothing else.
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
The bagels here are top notch. Not much competition in the city, so it gets busy at peak hours and they sell out early. I wish they had more variety but I guess they go for quality over quantity. It's a nice location on Freret, which is more local and quaint.
google avatar

Tristen W.

Yelp
One of the best quick and tasty breakfast spots uptown! I ordered a cold brew and a toasted everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. The scallion cream cheese was so tasty and is always my go-to. The bagels are always huge and extremely filling. They also have daily specials for both bagel and cream cheese flavors! I would recommend getting there early, especially on weekends, as they can sell out quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a hair in my bagel yesterday and asked them to remake it, which they did, but they weren't apologetic at all. Not that they need to be but they probably should have been. I wanted to give them another chance, as this was one of my favorite spots in college, so on Monday, we returned. Their website says they'll be operating summer hours (closed on Mondays) until fall rolls around (then they're open on Monday's). Second Monday of the month in November, and I was trying to get a bagel at 7:10 and they were closed. Their door sign and Yelp said closed, but their website and Apple Maps indicate open? Unless November is summer to them??? Hungry and upset rn at 7:17 AM on a Monday w out a bagel.

Tanisha Y.

Yelp
So I went here this weekend while on vacation. It was a good meal overall, there are just a few things that bothered me. They had about 10 bagel flavors in general, there were out of 4 of the main flavors: honey wheat, cinnamon, and the other sweet bagels. It was only 11am. I know bagel shops to keep making bagels through the day. I guess that wasnt the case. I ordered a garlic bagel with cream cheese and Turkey bacon and tea. The other thing that bothered me is that they didnt have more tea flavors to offer. It was one type of blend and the girl didnt even know how to ring it up. It seems like a place where a lot of college kids work. So maybe that has part to do with it!

Yelp
Plain Honey wheat bagel, toasted, with scallion cream cheese and eggs. Delicious!!!!!!!! $7.20

Yelp
Ten out of ten in every measure. Great service, amazing bagels, cool location although it is tiny, this place checked every box that we were looking for. We went next door to get coffee as well, it was great!!
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
I loved this place! There are many types of bagels and a few types of cream cheese. We went for breakfast. I had a whole wheat everything bagel, 1/2 with scallion cream cheese and 1/2 with bacon egg and cheese. The cream cheese is delicious. The bacon, egg and cheese was good, but the bagel was pretty dry. Some mayo or something was needed. The bagels are pretty thick which is just a minor complaint. Overall we enjoyed it!

Andrea R.

Yelp
I passed this place several times before I made it in. Other times they were closed for the day, closed for the rest of the day, sold out, or just closing early. I've seen reviews noting that Humble was in the Big Leagues of bagels. When I finally got my bagel I noticed the bagel was big, but I didn't find them to be significantly better than ones I've had at other coffee shops. I also found the bagels extra salty. Maybe that's there special touch.‍

Yelp
My fiancé and I just moved to New Orleans from New York and we actually bought a house less than a mile from Humble Bagel partly because I am so obsessed with the quality of the bagels and they remind me so much of NY bagels. Freret st in general is amazing so highly recommend coming here!!
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Being from NY, bagels have been a staple in my life for as long as I can remember. There was nothing like waking up on a Sunday morning to a giant bag of two dozen bagels for my family and containers of different flavor cream cheese. So when I moved to NOLA last year, I was obviously bummed that bagels here are basically nonexistent, but one day a friend recommended I try Humble Bagel. I finally got around to trying it yesterday, and I was quite satisfied! I got an everything bagel with egg whites and cheddar and my fiancé got an everything bagel with cream cheese. He didn't like that his bagel had way more poppy seeds on his than mine did, but I personally didn't care. Aside from that, I thought my bagel was really yummy! It was crispy on the outside and softer on the inside. It wasn't as doughy as I normally like my bagels, but I'd definitely consider it a NY style bagel. They also didn't cheap out on my egg whites, which I appreciated. I got a jar of OJ, and although it was expensive it was soooo fresh and delicious. They give you a dollar off if you return with it on your next visit as well. The staff was also friendly and things seemed to be running super efficiently. With all of this said, was this best bagel I've ever had? No (sorry if I'm overly picky, but being from NY I've had a lot of bagels in my day). But was it a good, solid bagel? 100%. Easily the best I've had outside of NY. And I'll definitely be back again when I need a bagel fix!

Yelp
I haven't written a review in a while and I can't think of a more perfect place to get me back into it. This place is godly. I've been waiting to try Humble Bagel for a while. Now that I'm at Tulane, it's conveniently in my neighborhood. The people who work here are friendly, funny and inviting. The bagel itself is way better than even the reviews cracked it up to be. The only bagel I've had that comes close to this quality is a place called Zuckers in New York. Did I mention I'm from New York? Not only was the bagel sizeable, delicious and crunchy but the lox itself was of amazing quality. I will be back here every Monday morning to do some reading with my bagel.

Yelp
pretty good bagels in general. cool vibe also, just didn't like the line which was really long
