Houston’s Best Diners | Eater Houston

"This kitschy, small-town diner that’s located on Humble’s historic main street is a must-visit for Houston’s diner connoisseurs. Housed in a 1914 building that’s painted in a hard-to-miss red, white, and blue, Humble City Cafe has a down-home feel, with eye-catching country-style decor, complete with red checkered curtains and signs from popular brands. Mornings bring a homestyle breakfast with homemade biscuits, massive pancakes, and home fries, while afternoons and evenings promise white gravy-topped chicken-fried steak that nearly covers the plate and a laundry list of Southern sides ranging from fried green tomatoes and onion rings to mashed potatoes and fried pickles. The burger, sandwiched between a sweet Hawaiian bun, is also a solid choice. Insider tip: Be sure to check out the daily specials, and try not to fill up on the complimentary skillet cornbread, which comes out warm and fluffy with a side of cinnamon butter." - Brittany Britto Garley

We had a business breakfast meeting here this morning & I can’t say enough about the service, atmosphere & how wonderful the food was! Everyone was so kind & it’s the cutest place! There’s a ton of seating, we were able to linger and talk without interruption. Our waitress was so kind & attentive. I can’t wait to go back for lunch soon - they have daily specials!

Early in the morning and serving cold coffee, is qhuge NO for me. The country fried steak is too thin for what I'm used to. But it does have a great taste! The plastic syrup bottles are unattractive plus some locks in restrooms are broken so I had to use my foot to hold it shut. The French toast looks and tastes like bread with a bit of cinnamon. As an antique lover, it is a beautiful building it's historic .

Google
Super cute Cafe off Main in Humble ❤️. Nice change from your typical Cracker Barrel or other breakfast places. I will absolutely add this to my rotation. I'm not a huge fan of the parking situation, but that is what it is r/t location. Pictured: Western omelet, Deluxe Country with pancakes added (I was HONGRAY).

Google
Good atmosphere and service but the food looks like they bought from McDonald’s and marked the price up. My eggs were the only thing they actually cooked. Biscuit is store bought, sausage is half rubber and microwaved and hash browns went from freezer to toaster. Also wife’s bacon seemed to have been microwave. No flavor at all.

Our first time and breakfast was delicious. We were very lucky- there was no wait !! This place does get busy judging by the number of seats on the waiting area. We had Cafe Country dish, the eggs and pancakes were great. The potatoes were very tasty. We also tried the Vegetable omelet - awesome portion and the turkey bacon was delicious. Our waitress was awesome !! We will be back for breakfast and maybe try lunch !!!

Google
This is a great traditional café. The service was excellent. Nice find. Cornbread and mashed potatoes were favorites. The fish was cooked perfectly.

Google
Great down home, simple, good eating food served here great variety with a senior menu and large ‘shareable’ plates. Waitresses were helpful, friendly and attentive.

If you find yourself in the charming town of Humble, Texas, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this café. The food is pure country comfort, absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is wonderfully rustic, filled with vintage relics that evoke a bygone era, a welcome respite from the encroaching digital age. The staff are genuinely kind and courteous, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. This is a definite #muststop. Thank you, Humble Café, for a truly satisfying and delightful meal! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. 😉

Yelp
Our family lives this place! Nice ambience with rustic but tasteful decoration. Food is amazing and prices are affordable! Service is always excellent!!! The cornbread with sweet butter is my favorite! Ice team is delicious! Love me some fried okra!

Yelp
The food was hands down the best breakfast we've had in TX. Our server Damien was very attentive and professional but friendly. The restaurant has the look of an old Saloon and the sheer number of antiques on the walls will keep you busy long after your food has come. We really liked it here and when we pass this way again we'll be stopping!

Yelp
I've lived here forever and somehow missed this stellar location. I just keep smacking my head thinking of the friends and family I could have taken here. Just have to do it going forward. This is good country eating at its best. The food is outstanding, the choices vast and the serving's plentiful and hearty. The chicken fried steak is available in two sizes a half and a full, don't be fooled, that half will occupy most of your plate but get the full so you can take some home. I had cabbage and sweet potatoes as sides, both made me eat my veggies first. Same could be said of the steaming hot fried okra, solid southern cuisine. I would be remiss not to mention the cornbread served as an appetizer. Hot, it is served in an iron skillet with two types of butter, this is a thing of beauty! Head on over.

Yelp
The girls standing near the entrance were immediately giving dirty looks, the I had was also rude, never came to our table. The whole vibe in this place felt so judgmental and honestly the food wasn't that great either. I would not come back here.

Yelp
I enjoy supporting local businesses and looked forward to my lunch here at a nostalgic Humble restaurant. I was, unfortunately, less than impressed. I ordered the cheese sticks as an appetizer right after I sat down. 30 minutes later they arrived and a few minutes later so did my chicken pot pie. When I order an appetizer I want it well before the meal. The chicken pot pie I ordered was soupy and not at all creamy. The service was friendly and the bathrooms were clean though. I will typically say something to the manager but it wasn't bad enough to warrant that. Sadly, I won't be returning.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere in cool historical building . Food pretty good and service too. Good for lunch

Yelp
I wanted to like this place. The kitschy decor, the historic building, and the variety of the menu are all welcoming sights. However, this place didn't quite do it for me. I visited with another. The complimentary cornbread was dry. My dining partner's meatloaf was served still cold. I enjoyed my Buffalo chicken salad, and the blue cheese dressing was quite nice with chucks of blue cheese. The hush puppies were a total ripoff. It costs almost three dollars for a side of them, and when it came out, there was four small pieces of what looked and tasted like frozen hush puppies from a bag. Service was a tad slow but understandable as there was only a single server manning the dining room. He was very nice though.

Yelp
Country decor which gives a down home / home cooked meal vibe. Food was disappointing. Hashbrown looked like it came from fast food. Sausage link ok, but not breakfast sausage. Cheese on eggs was a cheese slice. Biscuits & gravy lacked seasoning & flavor. Server was blah and seemed tired. The coffee & water were good though. Can't find a reason to some back.
google avatar

Yelp
Outside looks scary hopefully it's deceptive downtown needs a huge makeover looks unsafe... Regardless of the need for gentrification, this café is so kitschy... it has a collection of funky items all over the place and a gift shop. It is a unique spot! I have to say the Philly cheese steak was out of this world delicious - I actually ate the whole thing.
google avatar

Yelp
Presentation and effort are an A, from the nice crispy top of the salmon, right down to the cute cast iron skillet corn bread. When it comes to taste, the natural flavors are there, but our food needed a little seasoning. The maple marinade was just too light, and the fish, zucchini, and tomatoes just needed a little extra something. Other than that, the decor was interesting and the service was good.

Yelp
Pkasters! Seriously, this is one of the gems of Humble. If you have time on your way to or from the airport come here and eat very well. It is always full for a reason. Very folksy spot which gives you plenty to look at while you wait. That's all I have to stay. Thank me later #Pkast

Yelp
Me and my wife came here chicken fried steak was no good to thin must have beat it with a sender block come on people cant make chicken fried steak. i want come back.

Yelp
Found this cute place while out with my sister. We happened to be in the area. Had the traditional Two Eggs breakfast, pan sausage, hash browns and biscuit. Food was good and service was friendly. Parking is limited and the hostess seemed a bit confused, maybe she was new. Overall a nice experience and would love to try it again for lunch sometime.

Yelp
We came here on the way to our weekend home in Livingston! Loved the small town ambiance and there was not a long wait time to come in. We were seated promptly and were given our drinks quickly, however we can't say the same for the food. I know they were busy but our food did not come out until about 45 min later. The food was good, and apologies for not posting an image, as we devoured it by the time it came out. The server kindly discounted our meal but I would definitely speak up going forward to improve the experience. Overall, recommend despite the inconvenience.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant with country decor. My husband and I both had the traditional breakfast with scrambled eggs, grits and sour dough toast. I had bacon with mine and my husband had the link sausage. Food was served quickly and was quite good. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would go back if in the area.

Patrick C.

Yelp
Food was amazing and actual home cooking. Staff was friendly and attentive. Artifact were discussable while waiting for food to arrive. Only downbeat was maybe the parking availability. But I guess that's part of visiting a small town feels.

Yelp
Take a slow walk down Main Street in the small town of Humble, just outside of Houston on Highway 59 and you'll find an old school diner called Humble city Café. If the small town feeling and ability to park on the street right in front of the café doesn't set your mind at ease, then take a step inside. It's a throwback of nostalgia, souvenirs and Americana and that's just the lobby. oddly enough, when you sit down to eat, the table is provided a complimentary pan of cornbread with creamy honey butter as a appetizer while you wait. The menu is broad and deep, mostly old country favorites are served. you will find chicken and dumplings, greens, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and other assortments of old favorites. In addition to salads. All told, it can be a pleasant dining experience.

Yelp
I love the small town feel at the cafe, their prices are very reasonable in the service is great as well. We are wanting to take a scroll around Old Town Humble but to our surprise, the only gem there is this Cafe. The parking is a little bit confusing however with their wonderful staff, they can definitely guide you to the best parking spot, which I could really appreciate that to avoid any towing. For my dish I decided to go with the chicken fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy and my other side was steamed cabbage, I typically would go with half the order but my significant other wanted to try it out as well and it was by far our favorite dish! He ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and macaroni and cheese which I want men I was a bit jealous of the macaroni and cheese since it was so tasty! For the meatloaf, we weren't sure which kind of sauce we wanted so our server was kind enough to provide us with both the brown one and the red sauce which worked out perfectly because we both like the different sauces! I can appreciate when servers provide different options without the additional charge so she was compensated for her troubles. Safe to say when we are in the area, we will stop by once again for their delicious southern meals.

Yelp
I've been here several times. It's a staple here in amble. Typically the staff is overtly, happy friendly, but this one time I went there the food came out extra late. It was cold. I had to remind the waitress that I asked for it to be hot to be served she can't have a little bit attitude that kind of turning me off a little bit but I told her that you know if the service depends on the Tip and I'm afraid to say this, but she definitely had an attitude when she took it back didn't bring back the order that I ordered but it was definitely OK. The food here is actually very good. I think it was just a bad day that I got but this is the day I'm riding the review. Not seem to take this as a criticism at all but just remember a lot of times that you're waiting on people you don't know who's doing the reviewing and service to me is a big ordeal.

Yelp
Enjoyed Sunday breakfast with my family. My kids loved their pancakes. Service was a little slow.

Yelp
Great Diner food! If you want a heart breakfast, Greta burger or a full plate of chicken fried steak! This place is for you! I know this will be a frequent place for family to visit.

Yelp
Humble City Cafe has been serving down home country cooking for years in Humble Texas. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. My favorite starter are the friend mushrooms. The are hand battered and come to the table pipping hot. The iron skillet cornbread is delicious especially with the cinnamon butter. Of course, I love to treat myself to the chicken fried chicken, mash potato's and gravy with corn. Yum!!! It's lots of food so I love to go with a friend and share the meal. Still leave stuffed!! Worth the visit when your in the area :)

Kristina C.

Yelp
Will be returning! If you love country food and antiques this is definitely the place for you. The atmosphere of the restaurant is friendly and comforting and there's so much to look at. I had the café country breakfast that was $11.59 and came with all the food in the picture. A deal! It was all good too. The pancakes had a great taste to the batter and the eggs were fluffy. Service was also friendly and attentive.

Lassha C.

Yelp
It was not a nice experience. Chicken was not cooked slow service it was just terrible cute place terrible service

Yelp
Where can you go for a real good comfort breakfast and eat at an historical building? here at humble city cafe. this place is Great for breakfast! with an exceptional Friendly staff that loves to fill your cup of Joe in the AM. i always come here for breakfast and i'm big on breakfast because its the first meal of the day and its the most important meal. the Food comes in good portions so come hungry and leave happy. i have eaten here on numerous occasions and the food never fails. i've tried maybe half of the items on menu for breakfast. i would recommend a nice chicken fried chicken breakfast with gravy it complements well with either scramble or over easy eggs and don't forget to have the chicken fried chicken with their smothered biscuits and gravy now that is southern comfort. the side meats like bacon is always cooked to perfection and sliced ham is always nice hot and soft and the pancakes and french toast are delicious as well, make sure to ask for the warm syrup. if your into omelettes i recommend a bacon and cheese or western omelette these are huge and they do justice they are always packed and fulling and you cant ever go wrong with that. humble city cafe is really nice place so enjoy this historical spot while it is still here, they don't make places like this anymore.

Yelp
Great historical restaurant with awesome service and great food .. served extremely fast... And all we had tastes like home cooked... But table was a bit sticky or 5 stars would be due. Worth a visit!!

Gem A.

Yelp
First time coming here after being in the area for over a decade, and I have heard good things about the Humble Cafe but I was not impressed I will start with the atmosphere is very nice. However the service was very very slow waited for over 30min for my food. During my wait no one came over to offer a refill on my drink. I had the chicken fried steak breakfast with a side of biscuits and gravy The chicken fried steak was very tuff The biscuits were good thou they are very soft and flaky However the country gravy I though was very plain For the $ there are better places to eat at in the area. But saying that I will try this place again but no hurry to do it

Yelp
The finest in Texas Reallyi Service and food Great try the waffle sit near the window

Yelp
I was very unhappy with my undercooked meal with rice and pointed it out to the waitress. tried with several bites to eat it but couldn't. By the time she came back again my son was almost finished so I didn't want to order anything else. I asked to have it removed from the check and they refused. First, it was taking $2.00 off and then half off when I got to the cashier. Poor choice by the manager and I won't go back. I very rarely complain but this was just poor business.

Scott S.

Yelp
This place is coasting on past reputation. They no longer bake homemade banana pudding with meringue, just vanilla instant pudding with some banana cut-up and wafers (the main reason I made a special trip). Gravy was store bought, too. Cornbread was still good, but I there are better places to find better comfort food. Service was slow even though I arrived when the tables were maybe a quarter full. Mediocre food, slow service, overpriced because of the atmosphere. There HAD to be a change of ownership since I last went for it to slip this bad.
google avatar

Yelp
Consistently well cooked food. Great value and excellent service. If you want their homemade corn bread make sure you get there after 11am.

Yelp
It has been a year or so since we have been here, so we tried it again today for lunch. Very disappointed. First clue this wasn't going to be a good visit was there was no hostess available to tell us how much of a wait there was. Turns out she was standing behind us manning their telephone. We could clearly see there were tables available. In fact, after about 10 minutes standing there, she seated everyone in line in the same tables that were available when we walked in. Apparently, establishment puts their phones over their in person customers. Food was epic fail. We ordered One order of "well done" hamburger steak with "homemade" fries and grilled zucchini. 2nd order Chicken-fried steak, "homemade" fries and squash. As server was walking off from taking our order, server replied I will bring out your cornbread. I just thought she would be bringing cornbread and rolls, since in the past we have always been given both. The complimentary cornbread was dry. Since I prefer rolls with chicken fried steak , when she delivered our food I asked what happened to the roll options. Her response was, you could of had 4 rolls for $1.50. A good server would have offered the option when we were ordering. Hamburger steak was medium instead of well done. Good portion was pink. Husband said when he remarked make sure its well done, she said ok but did not make any notation. Our orders came out with frozen crinkle fries instead of the "Homemade fries" we ordered. When I reminded the server that we ordered "homemade fries" Server's response was "We don't have any right now". Would have been nice to have told us this when we were ordering instead of assuming frozen fries were an acceptable substitution to "fresh homemade fries. I would have ordered any side instead of frozen fries. So much for "fresh" food White gravy was gummy and tasteless. Needless to say we will not be back.
google avatar

Misty A.

Yelp
Staff was nice. There was a small wait but was not bad. The corn bread was pretty dry. But hey it's complementary. It was a nice talking point and my granddaughter stated it did not taste like Nanas (I am nanas!). So I will take it! Chicken and rice soup. The grilled fish was pretty good. The turnips were amazing.

Lupita R.

Yelp
Horrible customer service the waiters ignore you i had to go into the kitchen myself to ask for a box to go, will not be back.

Edd D.

Yelp
Go here for the ambiance. Typical small town diner in the heart of the Houston metroplex. We went for breakfast and were joined by several police officers having their breakfast as well. Service was friendly and prompt. Our breakfast was the standard bacon and eggs, but the pancakes were definitely above average. Recommend and will return.

Daniel B.

Yelp
I was there for 2 hours waiting for food and I never got my food outrageous don't come here

Rosa H.

Yelp
Always good food & beautiful decor. Try to visit here when in this area. Staff is always friendly and attentive.

Yelp
We loved the fresh paint of blue on the outside. It was the first thing we noticed as we eat there fairly often. We have always been super happy at our little local café but today for lunch was a sad experience, unfortunately. We were greeted when we entered & sat down at a booth. This was at 1:26 p.m. It was a good 5 minutes before we were asked if we wanted anything to drink. I ordered the Boneless Buffalo Wings for an appetizer. They looked very unappealing! I sent them back because they just did not look inviting!! They were long strips and if there was batter on them, it wasn't visible. Our food arrived and everything was luke-warm, except my chicken fried steak & gravy. My husband's Pot Roast was just warm as were our mashed potatoes, corn & okra. It was sad but we ate in silence. A lady manager, (blonde) I would guess, walked right by us. She never asked anyone if everything was okay.... I got the felling she really didn't care. We did let our server know that our food was just "Okay" and not as hot as it usually is served so she could make the kitchen aware. Went to the counter and saw the 'office door' was open halfway. There was no one at the counter so I went and knocked on the door saying, " we would like to check out please. No apologies just an OH. It was a $45 lunch that was just Okay. I hope they realize that consistency is everything and I realize things are tough, especially my money.

Yelp
Very homey! I go there so often I know the staff and vice versa. The food is absolutely delicious and very down to earth. You get what you order, and exceeds your expectations by a mile. The decorations in the dining rooms are very interesting, and historically informational. My family and I enjoy playing "I Spy" with the trinkets hidden around the restaurant. I personally recommend the Monty Cristo and the breakfast platter, both of these are perfect for any day you need a good, filling meal. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
Excellent Sunday morning breakfast! We had western omelets and bacon and pan sausage. Food was good and fresh! Service was prompt and friendly. Coffee was hot and fresh and plentiful! Overall, an excellent breakfast! Highly recommended.

Yelp
I've never heard of this place and was taken there by some locals. This place gets my hidden gem award. It was great! They started us off with cornbread in a mini cast iron skillet. It was great. I had a chicken fried steak sandwich and onion rings. It's was fantastic. The onion rings are home made. They sliced they onion, breaded it and fried it. It was full of local's that knew each other and I even saw the waitress bring out drinks without asking the patron because she knew what they wanted. Regular customers and regular staff. All good signs. Give it a try. I'm going back for breakfast soon.

Yelp
Glad we came here! Staying in Houston for 1 night and wanted to have something good and local. Yelp led me here. Service was great. We started with the stuffed jalapeños. Was not what I was expecting but still really good. They were really stuffed with chicken. Thick. In some soft yet crispy breading. I had the quesadilla. It tasted like the cheese might have been American? Again unexpectedly tasty. My boyfriend got the burger. Said it was second favorite burger ever. And that's saying a lot as he's picky and orders burgers a lot. Loved the fries. Definitely homemade. Son got the wings. More like strips and super good also. Stomachs were at max by the end of the meal but still had to try the Mississippi mud pie. Nice texture and lots of gooey marshmallow. All in all highly recommend this place!

Greg W.

Yelp
First place I went to after getting off the plane. Perfect way to start my day. Hot coffee and delicious breakfast. Here in Humble for three days. Will definitely eat here again before I leave.

John N.

Yelp
Very disappointed as this place used to be a great comfort food go-to. Only wanted sone sides for an invalid family member and they remembered fondly the cooked vegetables from here. Ordered five sides but asked if they had larger pint sized sides so I could get wife's Mom several servings out of it. They said they had larger containers from thanksgiving meals but that they hold about 3 normal sides so price would be $8.99 per side. Got order and saw container count was correct for what i ordered. Left and went home only to find the containers weren't even full. The mashed potatoes was what looks to be a single scoop or spoonful in the container, the gravy was a larger portion then the potatoes it was supposed to cover. The food was decent but to charge nearly $50 total for basically 5 sides and not even fill the containers up? The kitchen definitely does not care what its putting out. The rest of the staff was accommodating and pleasant. I will not go here again unless its a nostalgic visit for a family member who remembers when they were good and wants to reminisce.

Yelp
In my opinion, best for breakfast... Stopped in Friday night about half an hour before closing....service was fine, food was fine I brought 2 of my chicken strips home for the next day When I opened container, there was a cricket inside! Don't know how it got in, but of course it went in the trash right away! The restaurant is very old and quaint...not super clean, but I like it! Breakfast is always delicious and I will return
google avatar

Yelp
Quaint and old fashioned, it's a charming place for a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The prices are very fair, and everything tastes home-cooked and yummy. The table is served complimentary skillet cornbread, and my personal recommendation is to try a little pepper sauce (vinegar infused with peppers) on everything... it's a nice touch to the long list of southern-style favorites on the menu.

Yelp
I have been wanting to come here for a long time since reading about it. I rarely come to Humble so it took a while to get here. Last weekend I finally did. The cafe is located in downtown Humble. It seemed to me that the downtown area is going through a revitalization effort with several new businesses opening up. Parking my car on the street, I walked in. Upon entering you start in a large room that is both a gift shop and hostess/waiting area. It was a Saturday at about 11:30 a.m. and I was immediately seated. The restaurant was about 2/3 full and it appeared to me that at that time it was a late breakfast crowd. The interior is decorated in that typical Texas country/roadside diner decor that gives a comfortable and old timey feel to it. It reminded me of being like a Cracker Barrel before there were Cracker Barrels. The restaurant is large with a lot of seating. After the hostess seated me, I waited for my server. Servers passed by and passed by and passed by (like the airplanes flying overhead landing at Bush airport) but not one decided to land at my runway. Almost 15 minutes went by and I started considering other dining options. Then the manager noticed me and walked over and asked if I had been waited on? I said no and that I was getting ready to leave. She said she would take care of me. About 3 minutes later she brought a server to the table and said that she would take care of me and apologized. I had difficulty deciding on what to order because this was my first time. For some reason, I ordered the hamburger (Humble burger) and homemade fries. First to come out was a skillet of their complimentary cornbread. It was good and I enjoyed it being served that way which fit into the old timey theme of the restaurant. The food came about about 10-15 minutes later. I thought the burger was good with a solid feel to it and maybe a 6oz.? patty. I graded it at a 3.5. The fries were homemade and hand cut which I always appreciate and were good too. I thought they were a 3.5 also. My service was poor (2). Not with just the initial wait, my drink glass refills were very slow along with the bill presentation. The meal filled me up especially after eating some of the cornbread. In hindsight, I wish that I had ordered one of their entrees like the CFS, or pork chops, etc. Some of their daily specials looked good to me if I was there on those days. I think my Yelp friend Jeremy T's review is spot on about this place not with just the food quality but also slow service and prices. While my meal was reasonable in cost, I noticed that many of their entrees seemed to be a little pricey to me considering the type of place this is. I think you will get a good meal here so I am giving a 3 however the service needs to improve.

Cindy M.

Yelp
Used to be a good place to go. Not anymore! Ordered hash browns & got a potato cake just like you would get at McDonalds or some fast food place. 2 hrs later, husband got sick (food poisoning?). Water there is HORRIBLE!! Which makes the ice taste bad, etc. Just not a good place to eat anymore.

Christy H.

Yelp
A must! Good breakfast and lunch selection. I love their breakfast. Complimentary cornbread with cinnamon butter. The best stuffed jalapeños! Now they have flavored coffee creamer. Breakfast potatoes are delicious. On the weekends there can be a wait but nothing too crazy

Montana B.

Yelp
Need to narrow down options to increase quality. Syrup was literally the consistency of water and the staff just shrugged it off
