The views are gorgeous, but the hiking itself is fairly boring. You can see the Crestones and they are so incredible. Make sure to follow cairns!

Climbed Sept 21st, 2024, Beautiful views of the NE faces of Crestone Peak and Needle along with Kit Carson. Double track road closed by gate around three miles too soon but adequate parking near this upper lot. Steep five mile climb but worth the effort, starts to make you work for it past the lakes.

12 miles roundtrip from the 4WD trailhead, Humboldt Peak was really challenging.

Humboldt offers incredible views of the Crestones to the SW and Kit Carson and Challenger Peak to the W-NW. Relatively easy compared to its neighbors (especially the Crestones), the views from this peak are unparalleled. Having done all the 14ers, this one was one of my favorite.
I was fortunate enough to summit my first time on this peak just minutes before sunrise after pushing hard from the trailhead in the dark, enough to capture the picture of my shadow casting onto the summit.

Worth the trek! I got up to 13,100 ft and had to turn around due to cold and wind upsetting my dog. It’s a rough drive up with any vehicle but a beautiful one! Will be back soon to finish it.

Humboldt humbled me and my friends! We had a great time but underprepared for the weather (make sure you research better than we did!) The views of the Crestones were beautiful, the trail was well-marked, and there were a lot of places to camp near the lakes.
Please note that you need a 4WD/AWD with high clearance to get up to the trailhead!

Loved this hike some of the best views out of any of the peaks I’ve climbed.
