Humdinger Drive-In and Food Truck

Went there for the first time tonight and first impression was great, went through the drive through and the line moved decently fast, I wasn’t expecting usual fast food pace, but that’s what we got! The lady at the window was super sweet, even though I changed my order in between. I had one burger that was modified and they got that right. It was right under $20 for two meals with shakes, I think that’s a very good price compared to any other corporate food chain. And the food tasted FRESH, veggies, meat, and fries. I would def go again

First timer here, and let me say I WILL Definitely be going BACK. The food was delicious, I ordered the Big Italian steak sandwich. Man I was impressed.

Love the vibe of this place! Just an old school fast food place. Feels like it’s been here forever. I’ve been a lot of people had a lot of great memories here. Ordered the big kahuna with steak. Came with two eggs, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion, hot sauce. Served on a hoagie roll. All in all, great sandwich. I feel like at a place like this you can’t really go wrong. Almost ordered a burger and fries. They also have tacos which sounded pretty good. Hope to be back! And their ice cream machine was not broken! They have a lot of shakes on the menu, but I just wanted a classic vanilla cone.

The Italian sausage big kahuna sandwich was huge and very satisfying. The fried egg was perfect on top. I also liked the egg bacon and cheese sandwich but the bread on both sandwiches were kinda bleh. The fries were thick and delicious. The staff was super nice and welcoming too.

Came in here last night. Prices are pretty cheap considering inflation. The burger was tasty and the tenderloin was decent. Corn nuggets were great! Fried mushrooms are good but way too greasy.. Vanilla shake was heavy but good

They make bomb milkshakes. The tacos are very yummy. A little small but very tasty. I don’t recommend getting a single cheeseburger unless you are a child because they are super thin. And it’s really not in the best part of town.

If you want real homemade southern food , this is where you go!! After more than twenty five years this is still the best place to go! I recommend the Bacon Kahuna and a side of Okra!

It's an old-school place if you know. Go for yourself I have had tacos 🌮, burgers 🍔 the poppers are 🔥. Great shakes as well 😋 Reminds me of the Peculiar Drive Inn, and it's closed down. I grew up with cattle and farms. Now I'm in the action, I love downtown. Out south had cool stuff too.

Amazing menu and great food. I ate a cheese burger and fries, juicy and fire. Id recommend trying the place soon.

Humdingers is a tradition. The Big Kahuna is a legen Still one of my favorite places to go and get burgers, tater tots, and fried mushrooms!! Everything is cooked to order....the cooks and staff have changed over the years, but I still love some Humdingers! A place where I have tried and eaten just about everything!

I visit this spot occasionally and always hits the spot, very affordable and has great service.

Humdinger was a Kansas City institution before I was born, and I am not a young person. It is the quintessential drive-in. You will find hot, greasy food and it will likely clog your arteries but you will like it. For my money, you won't find a better Italian steak than at Humdinger. I also highly recommend the onion rings, fried mushrooms, and tacos. This is food that instantly transports me back to childhood, in the best way. Now let's talk location. It is not in a good part of town. I should know, I grew up near here and still live in Northeast. Do not be obtuse or oblivious. Head on a swivel if you visit, preferably during daylight hours.

After an acquaintance of my wife's recommended it we threw caution to the wind and decided to drive 30 minutes to try the Humdinger. Cute name but the building not so much. The Humdinger is the epitome of "dive" and that's ok because oftentimes these kinds of places turn out some great food. The Humdinger is sadly an exception. We found the large lot with a small restaurant in the middle and an operating food truck in a corner. We pulled to the back of the building to find a car parked so we took the hint and parked in the same way. Good thing because except for that, you really couldn't tell it was open. Reading signage it appeared that you had to call in your order....we found the line busy but after a few tries we got through and placed our order consisting of a Diet Pepsi, a strawberry shake, a beef humdinger, a cheeseburger and both with tots. The curb service was quick and friendly. Unfortunately, other than the tots and shake, the food (sandwiches) were not too impressive. Specifically, they were of average size and definitely greasy. The hamburger on mine was overcooked. Based on our experience I really can't heartily recommend the Humdinger unless you're very close and very hungry. So in a serious pinch, it'll work. Pro tip: Pepsi products only

I hadn't been to Humdinger Drive In for over 30 years and nothing much has changed. It's still a walk in and carry out hole in the wall within a building that has seen much better days. I ordered the Bacon Big Kahuna, which is a BLT on a hoagie bun with 2 fried eggs and hot sauce for $5. The bacon was crispy and plentiful and provided a breakfast sandwich that was priced better and tasted better than any chain burger place. Tots were crispy and hot. If the idea of visiting 9th and Prospect Ave intimidates you, get over yourself and go support an east-side independent business that's been serving up burgers and all the fried goodness since 1962

We moved to the neighborhood in 2022. The first time we showed up to give it a try, we were thrown off by a couple of employees sitting outside and waving for us to come in. It felt strange so we left. The second time was a different story. We walked up, ordered, and took the food to go. Along with cheeseburgers and fries, we tried the mild tacos and a shake. Everything was as it should have been for a walk up burger joint, and the food really hit the spot. The staff were courteous and helpful and the order came out fast. We met another patron while waiting, who makes it via a point to stop in when they're in town. We're looking forward to coming back Regarding the nature of the surrounding neighborhood, Northeast is a funky place that reminds my husband of NYC in 1970's-80's. We love the people and businesses of NEKC and the Humdinger is at the top of our list of gems. FYI the menu is big, varied, and prices have increased since other poster's pics. Enjoy!

The food was just what we were looking for! Yummy drive in food! It's right off the highway and the food is made fresh! Right now you have to call to order in advance and the lovely lady who took/brought our order was so nice and kind! The Italian steak was flavorful and tender, breaded and fried to perfection. My husband absolutely devoured his cheeseburger. We will be back for sure!

This place gets five stars, not particularly because it's a five restaurant, but these folks care about getting you hot, fast serviced food to you with a smile on your face. I work for the Postal Service, and also work nights, during this entire BS Covid crap, this has been the ONLY place I can count on for quality hot food to eat with the lockdown hours, and for what it is, this place deserves to thrive hardcore. Please support this place and give it a try. You won't hate the food, and you'll love the smiles the workers have when they bring you out your meal.

I used to live in the neighborhood a very long time ago and humdingers is just one of those places that hit home when you go back to visit. My go to is their chicken sandwich and strawberry soda. Simple neighborhood fast food and delicious!

I got a tenderloin sandwich and tater tots from their food truck. I expected more tater tots for the price but otherwise the food was good. You don't pay taxes at the food truck either. Tenderloin Sandwich - $6.00 Tater Tots - $3.00

My boyfriend got the Italian steak kahuna and I got the bacon cheeseburger since it was my first time eating here. We ordered from the car since the inside was closed due to Covid. Overall everything was good. I also tried the fried cauliflower which wasn't bad either. I will be back to try more.

Humdinger! Baby, as a KC native this is one of the city's best long-standing restaurants. Possibly best kept secret. No cap. See urban dictionary for translation. The menu is robust and conveniently scribed on the building in large bubble letters. They have a really scrumptious Italian steak sandwich, the pork tenderloin is tender and the breading is just right on that thang! A favorite for me are the tiny tacos which I have devoured without taco sauce. I suggest calling to confirm their hours of operation the hours listed may be different in real life.

This location has some very good food. Tacos and all are great! The BIG KAHUNA is Awesome!

Tried to place order via phone due to Covid before 11am and was told they didn't open til 11; only to have other customers pull up and say they ordered via phone due to Covid 10 mins ago. Tried to call-phone busy. Horrible first time experience. I left!

I am so glad we tried HumDinger. The girl working behind the counter was very friendly and nice to explain options, since it was our first time there. (We looked a bit out of place in business attire...) There were lots of regulars. I got the tenderloin and it was really good - crispy outside, lots of flavor. I'd leave off the mustard next time, because it did mask the flavor a little too much for my preference. The combo comes with a big drink and fries for about $6. My friend got the Big Kahuna - meat, egg, cheese, bun, etc. Giant sandwich with lots of flavor. He also got the chili cheese tots. They were good, but the chili is really just meat, so while they were good it wasn't the messy side he was expecting. Overall, if you're up for a trip to a little walk-up, cash only restaraunt that has a BIG menu, this is your place. I'll be back to try the cheeseburger!

One of the oldest and best places to eat in Kansas City reasonable priced food and made to order. The big kahuna Italian sausage one of the best things on the menu by far. Located right off of ninth and Prospect Avenue.

This is by far one of my favorite places to eat. They have great food at a good price. The only downfall is the location. Which is really a shame. This place would blow all the burger/ taco places out of the water. Very shocked they haven't tried moving their location to a safer neighborhood. They would thrive!

Dive Alert! Not for the meek! This is a classic drive-in (walk-in actually). Tenderloins, tacos, italian steak sandwiches, tots, rings, egg sandwiches, fried shrimp, fried okra, fried gizzards, shakes of a thousand flavors, just to name a smidgen of the menu items. Some say the best cheeseburger in town. Others say the best chicken sandwich in town. I go there about once a year to make sure it's still there, to test my fortitude and to pay homage to an iconic 60's vintage, urban joint that is just enough unlike anything else in the city. Just look for the faded neon charicature of what resembles Goofy, holding a tray of grub, and a ton of signs covering the red and white structure. Ever Eat Here?

I sort of hate to give this place three stars, because in truth I absolutely adore it. It's exactly the kind of super divey little shack I gravitate toward, and it's just a short walk from my house. I've been many times, and it's always the same two people working there so I have to assume they own it. The well-tattooed lady who takes orders is always super friendly, and the guy manning the grill apparently speaks in mysterious grunts. "You got two chili cheese dogs coming back," the counter lady said. The cook, who must have heard the order coming from me, stood still as a statue until his coworker called it back. "Mrrrffghhhblr," he acknowledged, before leaping into action, slapping a pair of wieners onto the hot griddle. I've never heard the cook say anything else. I like to think mrrrffghhhblr is the only word he knows, but sadly, that's probably not the case. So, great location; awesome quirky little building; expansive menu; friendly service. What's not to like? Well, the food. Not that it's bad! Well, actually, it is, although I find it charmingly bad. The thing is, I love greasy American-style ground beef and lettuce fast food tacos. Yet the tacos here are too greasy, even for me. They're so greasy that by the time I get them home (a matter of just a couple blocks!) they have completely disintegrated into greasy mush with some lettuce. Now, I'm ok with that! In fact, I find it disgustingly awesome. The first time I ordered tacos I was a little put off, but now I order tacos with the expectation that by the time I get home, I'll be eating greasy taco soup; which, while I am fine with it, is difficult to give four stars for. Similarly, their "chili" is actually just their bland taco meat with some kind of weird, sweet and vinegary hot sauce squirted on it. I like it alright (now that I know what I'm getting), but it sure ain't chili. On the "still need to try" list: pork tenderloin, and their supposedly epic Big Kahuna, which is a sandwich meal deal (includes fries and a drink) with your choice of meat, a fried egg, and a bunch of other toppings.

I. Love. This. Place. I wish Kansas City had more of this. Remindes me of LA. The lady behind the counter was incredibly friendly. I ordered a hot dog and chili cheese tots. Freaking tasty!!! Plus they have Super Pacman and Burger Time!!!!! I know, Super Pacman blows but it's stil crazy to see. Plus their jukebox is pretty solid with only a few misses like Mariah Carey. I'm going to be here all the time!!

Pretty decent Burger, love the divey 60's diner feel. I made the mistake of ordering Fries, next time I will make sure to get their tots. No salt on the fries, so if you love salt ask for some! You also have to ask for ketchup. I hear the chicken sandwich is a must try... Next time.

I hired the Humdinger food truck to cater my husbands birthday party. We had a full menu available to our guests and everyone loved the food! Great experience!

The burgers were amazing! The corn nuggets were perfection. Saved my relationship. Also a perfect hangover cure. I wanted the lady who gave us our greasy sack of food to adopt me. She was the sweetest. I need a nap. You need some of these burgers in your life.

This place is all that it should be in every respect. It's the best hole in the wall burger joint in town (that's not all they sell - the menu is quite large - but you get the idea). No place to sit inside, if that matters. Prompt and very friendly service.

Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. Went here for the first time Saturday. After waiting a few minutes and not seeing a soul we left. It was like nobody was working there and forgot to lock the door. Place needs some serious work done to it. I appreciate a good dive but the grunge of the place made me wonder about the kitchen. The ceiling had a pretty bad leak with a bucket under holding some pretty nasty brown water. Not an appealing look. Please don't review this business if you received a freebie for writing this review, or if you're connected in any way to the owner or employees.

Thought it was just okay food and it was a little overpriced for what it was. It's not bad food, just not anything special. We had cheeseburgers. One person also had a burrito which was of the frozen deep-fried variety. I wouldn't recommend it. Small. No seating - only good for carry out. I probably won't go back again.

One of the best greasy spoons in the city. Their cheeseburger is easily better than Town Topic or Hayes. Location might be an issue for some but worth a visit if you love classic diner food.

This place right here, has been around as long as I have lived and they still have awesome food, only thing that has changed is tenderloins are not as large as they use to be, but that is ok still has that humdinger good food taste....But what has always gave me excitement and still does today as I am writing the review..."Onion Rings" I have been thinking about these for about a week, and in the next 30min today I am going to go get me a large Onion Rings from none other than the famous "Humdinger" on 9th street. Have always had good memories of this place...Humdingers keep serving us well.... Love it.
