What happened here?
My wife and I used to come to Hummingbird often.
On several occasions, we brought friends from out of town. The menu was dependable and so was the food. The service was typically good.
We liked it. Until tonight.
Tonight, we were eating outside when my mother saw a mouse run under our table. It scared her and she jumped up. She sat back down and saw it a second time and stood up.
My wife, after hearing what had happened, did not want to continue eating outside.
When we told one of the staff what had happened and why we were all standing up looking around at the table, his response was, "We're outside, so...yeah."
I get it, guy. We're outside, in Old Town, by the water. We live here. We know.
But, if a customer sees a rodent by their table and asks (nicely, mind you) to be moved inside, maybe consider simply honoring the request, minus the commentary.
Just a bad look.
Worse, that wasn't even the low point.
I ordered the rockfish. When it arrived, it was full of bones. I picked no fewer than five bones out of a slimy spoon-size filet. The fried potato was burnt. The vegetables were flavorless and overcooked. The wine tasted like it was uncorked weeks ago.
When I showed my plate, including the bones, to the waitress and asked for the kitchen to take it back, we were surprised to find it still on the bill at checkout.
In cases like this, especially given our experience outside, you might expect the manager to maybe stop by, or otherwise make an effort to improve the dining experience. No. My wife, instead, had to chase our waitress down to have the entree removed from the check.
Bummer. We once liked this place. There are a lot of options in Old Town these days. More than there used to be.
For what it's worth, Ava's, for us, has been consistently solid.
Consider this a PSA. Everybody should feel free to eat wherever they choose. But, if I was you, and I had a choice, I'd choose another restaraunt.
