19 San Francisco Bay Area Restaurant Closures to Know This October 2024 | Eater SF

"I learned Humphry Slocombe, which launched out of its 2790 Harrison Street space in 2008 and later expanded into additional locations and grocery-store pints, will close its original shop as of October 30; co-owner Jake Godby called the situation "heartbreaking," saying they've been losing money since Covid and lacked the resources to maintain the store the way they would have liked." - Justine Jones

New San Francisco and Bay Area Restaurants and Bars: Ethel’s Fancy, Birdbox | Eater SF

"Humphry Slocombe is opening a third East Bay outpost on Bay Street in Emeryville with inventive, sometimes boozy ice cream flavors and held a soft opening in mid-September." - Lauren Saria

Google
A local Bay Area ice cream spot with many locations around the bay. Looking for some dessert or ice cream while around Bay Street in Emeryville, this is the spot. Open fairly late with both indoor and outdoor seating. There popular flavors are their Vietnamese coffee and cereal type of flavor. They have unique flavors and lots of options. I like to get mine sometimes on a cone or to share with a cup. There’s parking garage parking in the area. Service was great, the worker was very patient with our group as we sampled many flavors. We went with like a mint one and I forgot the other and got 2 scoops and shared it.

Google
Lots of really odd sounding flavors, but we weren’t in the mood to experiment. But they had a chocolate malt flavor, and it was the best chocolate ice cream I’ve ever had! Place was clean, the server was very nice and helpful. Not cheap ice cream but worth the price

Scott

Google
Ice cream is pretty darn good. I love the unusual flavors. And the ice cream has a good texture. Today I got two scoops of something minty and one scoop of pumpkin. Service is always friendly. They let you try samples before buying. Clean comfortable dining area. All in all a good ice cream experience.

Google
Absolutely loved this place. The flavors weren't what you'd expect, but it was definitely appreciated. We had the secret breakfast, and honestly, we were a mixed crowd. Some loved it, and others could live without it. It's all about preference on that one. The Taihitian Vanilla was phenomenal and I added fudge on top and it made it that much better.

Google
I tried the scoop of ice cream over a brownie. The ice cream was creamy, but the flavor didn’t stand out. The brownie, unfortunately, tasted reheated and was overly chewy. Overall, just okay.

Google
I’ve had ice cream before. It was today that is discovered that I’ve never had ice cream from here! Their DQ Sundae is the most amazing creation to compliment a day in Emeryville. The staff were professional yet down to Earth. The establishment was clean and there was plenty of seating. The wait time was minimal and it was pleasant to watch them create your order. I recommend this location to all!

Febeh A.

Google
It’sa cute little spot. The flavors could be better or they could have more variety. The service was great.

Google
Loved the bourbon caramel on my matcha cookies n cream. Lots of places to sit outside.

Yelp
Yuck ... ice cream was not delicious -at all -and none of flavors listed on the window -that we wanted to try- were available. Just about 10 flavors of sub par ice cream were available - like how does this place even stay open -especially when Ben & Jerrys pints are on sale at Safeway?? The guy scooping the ice cream was chill but nothing special - no smile or anything - like he was overworked - and he was working alone. We left him a tip regardless as he was solo and that made him change his monotone tune. But regardless - the ice cream was gross. Nobody in our group even raved about one flavor- there were 7 of us. I won't be going back.

Yelp
I came in and sampled a bunch of flavors, as the employee who helped me was patient and friendly Yellow brick road - golden milk ice cream with sunflower granola. It's interesting since the turmeric of golden milk is definitely more an acquired taste but I find it more tolerable as an ice cream. Malted milk chocolate - tastes like malt balls, not particularly unique but it's one of the tamer flavors. Allura - coconut lime and passionfruit, I thought it was alright, more tropical. It's a collab with a cruise line. Pepper mint chip - I didn't like it, but it's not too spicy. I would've liked it better with black pepper instead and more chocolate. It's the goat (not sure if I got the name right) - the habanero part made it a little spicy. I thought it was okay. I decided to get a single scoop of the yellow brick road in a cup. I thought the flavors were strange on the whole. I keep wanting to like Humphry Slocombe but I still prefer other ice cream shops in the east bay like Miharu, Cookiebar, and I-Scream on Solano.

Yelp
After an intense shopping session, this was the perfect way to cool down. A consistent ice cream chain with unique flavors that will raise some eyebrows (for better or worse). The staff was super kind and helpful at explaining the different flavors. Sometimes the names aren't clear on what's actually inside (black out = Oreo and fudge, delicious by the way). It was oddly warmer inside so we opted for the outdoor patio shared by the other restaurants. Red velvet was also a hit with hints of buttercream frosting. Got a nice view of the sunset and a sweet treat to wrap the day up. A bit pricey, but worth it if there's a flavor that speaks to you or you're willing to try.

Yelp
Super yummy! I had the s'mores in a waffle cone and it was so delicious. I also ordered the white chocolate cookie which I forgot on my chair so I hope someone enjoyed it. The service was pretty quick and friendly. We beat the rush and it did not disappoint! Wish I lived closer so I could come more often.

Yelp
What a unique little ice cream place. The flavors are so fun and definitely something you're not going to find everywhere - I tried the breakfast flavor with the bourbon caramel and it was delicious. The caramel was definitely on the strong side with a strong whiskey flavor. Additionally, it did feel on the pricer side for a scoop of ice cream - however, it was delicious and a nice occasional treat.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The taste of the ice cream was mediocre, even though we tried many of the available flavors. Otherwise, I can't complain about the service!
google avatar

Helena R.

Yelp
The options of flavor here are unique but I can attest that they are Sweet!! I ordered spiced pear on a waffle cone & my son had two scoops of different flavors salty caramel & coco nib - flavors were rich and super sweet! Original for sure- would I come back?? Maybe but too sweet for my taste buds
google avatar

Yelp
Empty Humphrey slocombe on a rainy day. I saw the sign outside and thought they had Hong Kong Milk Tea. They don't for scoops, only for pints. Service was good. I was able to sample their blood orange ice cream and disliked it LOL. So I got the Vietnamese coffee which is a safe bet.
google avatar

Stanton Y.

Yelp
Didn't re-open at 5 PM as mentioned on door. Staff was on her phone. Re-opened at 5:08 PM. The person in front of us was able to get a sample taste of ice cream but when i asked for a sample the server said she is not giving samples. The service can be improved. Should have taken down the chairs for people to sit. Be more consistent with giving samples.
google avatar

Lucy N.

Yelp
Despite the sign on the door saying they open at 2pm - they were open at 1:15 today. I feel like they would benefit from an "open" sign. Especially since it's a "dark" looking place so you're not sure if they are open. The guy working was nice - and the place has that ice cream shop smell (it's good) I enjoyed my scoop and would go back and enjoy it again.
google avatar

Adrienne H.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. Upon walking in the atmosphere is so modern and nice. They didnt have a lot of choices but I was able to try samples. I also was able to try the cone. The customer service was great and the guy was so patient. I opted for the cinnamon roll ice cream which I could tell wouldve been amazing but the ice cream was icy as if it was like freezer burned. I really feel like this place has potential and maybe I caught them on the wrong day. Everyone I was with agreed. The cone was light and fresh. Id be down to give them another shot.

Yelp
So good! Quick line, super friendly guy solo working the store on a weekend, amazing ice cream Secret breakfast - definitely the best and it's always a must when visiting any of their locations Mission impossible - spicy, like a warm hot vanilla, very comforting and unique Overall would visit again for the rotating flavors

Sean H.

Yelp
We received fantastic customer service from Nekka (not sure the spelling). This was Saturday night at 7pm and it was packed. She was working really hard and efficient while having a fantastic attitude. Greated every customer with a genuine smile and with the hospitality that is hard to find these days. We will absolutely return because of her.
google avatar

Anandita S.

Yelp
One of the best quality ice creams we have had in a while. The simple flavour of vanilla was one of the kids favourite. The slushy or the float was amazing. I also love the frosted flakes ice cream shared with my husband. Super fast service and a very cute place.
google avatar

Ranjan S.

Yelp
I've been in twice. The first time, service wasn't great but the ice cream was good. The dairy-free flavors are surprisingly good! The second time, the ice cream was flaky and icy, and not very creamy at all. The cocoa nib flavor as a whole wasn't great, but it was the texture that really ruined it for me. I don't go out to ice cream often, so I probably won't spend that outing here next time.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
Amaaaaaazing flavors as always. I rave about their Black Sesame ice cream. It's savory and rich and soo satisfying! Every bite has you saying mmmmmmm
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
I love me a good ice cream and this place makes a pretty good vegan cookies and cream version. I've had my share of both vegan and non-vegan ice cream so I know the difference between a quality batch of ice cream. Here's my baseline, if you can make a good vegan ice cream batch then non-vegan bamust be a home run! Cookies and cream flavor: 4/5. Pulling off vegan flavor that is tasty and satisfying to the palate shows and there was a lot of different versions to get it right and they got it right. Not too sweet but enough sweetness to get your sugar fix. Texture: 2/5. The combination of excellent flavor and texture is what I believe can make you stand out from other vegan ice cream vendors. The texture did not hold together. There were clusters of my scoop that held together, so there is s room for improvement in this department. There is a private covered parking lot so this is not an issue. Service: 5/5. I went on Monday around 6:45 pm and I was the only patron. This is a new shopping area and there is an abundance of outdoor seating and some indoor seating. There were the standard flavors but I wanted to see how they pulled off a batch of vegan ice cream. If you were blindfolded and had a spoonful of this cookie and cream ice cream you could not tell the difference between vegan and regular ice cream. If you are a seasoned chef you would be able to tell because of the texture but if it's a hot summer day I recommended a his place. Would I come back, absolutely!

Yelp
We had a vegan friend come into town and stay with us for a few days. After dinner in Oakland, we stopped by Humphry Slocombe to try their vegan ice cream. It was delicious! It tastes a little different and has a slightly different texture, but otherwise is just like normal ice cream. Service here is excellent. If you don't want the vegan options, then try the sugar and honey ice cream - its delish. And not as sweet as its name would make it sound, but still somewhat sweet nonetheless. Love the look and feel of the store. They did a great job on this place and the food strip at Bay Street is lucky to have it.
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
They have one of the best ice creams in the neighborhood. Literally every flavor I tried was so decadent and creamy. It's cool they let you sample flavors as many of them are unique and special. I'd recommend trying a new flavor you haven't had before and trying your favorite flavor! They also have so many toppings to choose from. Definitely go to this place for desert or dinner. :)
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
Came in for some dessert this past weekend. Service was good and was able to sample a few flavors. The Vietnamese coffee was really good. I went with the Matcha Oreo flavor and it was very pretty solid. They have seating inside but there also plenty of seats outside as well. For the price, I was given a pretty small scoop and that would be my only gripe with my experience this past weekend.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
The Bay Street restaurants have always seemed a bad fit for the shipping district, so I was thrilled to hear of an overall in the works. Humphrey Slocombe is part of the new offerings, complete with outdoor dining on the public thoroughfare side (complete with gas fireplace and lounging areas available to all). The whole thing is cozy and inviting as it was repellent before. The unusual flavors carry the day. This is a place to make new, cherished memories. Secret Breakfast is unabashed win. No hints given. Brown Butter was surprisingly complex; I legit returning to it. Serengeti Sunset (a collaboration with The Lion King Musical) was confusing, and I've been to South Africa. Not bad, mind you, just confusing. There are so many enticing flavors that Humphrey Slocombe will be a regular part of our shopping trips.

Yelp
I am so happy that there is one opened in Bay St! Despite it being far from me a bit, parking is just way easier here. You're able to sample the ice cream which is nice about this place. I got the Viet coffee ice cream and my boyfriend got the honey graham ice cream. I really liked mine and tried it before so I know my expectations. It's creamy and smooth. Price is not bad for what you pay. Can't wait to come back here again!
google avatar

Yelp
You have to try this ice cream!!!! Awesome place!!! A new location! Very convenient for those who are looking for a quick treat! 2nd floor so get a view of the water, plus people watch! I had tried a few items, but the Strawberry shortcake rocked my world!!!! Love the owners!!! They were so generous and genuine!!! This place deserves this HUGE RECOMMENDATION!!! Street parking and garage parking! Restrooms close by!
google avatar

Adam Z.

Yelp
Meh. I got a two scoop waffle cone for $10. It was literally just two round scoops that didn't come close to filling the waffle cone. First ice cream shop that I've been to that doesn't give at least a little extra. Come on man. I got two flavors: Smoked Chocolate Graham - icy. Pretty sad a gourmet ice cream shop can't even serve you creamy ice CREAM. Honey Graham - it was better. Very basic flavor profile and average. I'll take a pint of Ben and Jerry's over this stuff any day of the week.
google avatar

Kafilat Y.

Yelp
Bay Street is stepping up their food game!! The ice cream here is so yummy AND huge! There is a nice selection of ice cream and toppings to choose from, so there's a little something for everyone.
google avatar

Mary H.

Yelp
Ice cream amazing and service just as great. Yummy! Clean also! I will definitely return
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
The ice cream was amazing! My kids and I will come back again. Did noticed the guy...the manager I believe ? Speaking really rudely to the young lady. Once the lady made the ice cream for my daughter and hand it to her...he asked her to make it again because it was small? ( normal size) I said it was fine but she had to throw it away and make another one??? Next told her not to touch the screen with gloves?? Noticed he was doing it as well. A bit odd from my perspective and unnecessary:/

Yelp
Cute little spot. Clean establishment. Lots of interesting flavors. Offer samples. Decently priced. Service with a smile and patience to allow our group to taste and choose.
google avatar

Uday M.

Yelp
About ten flavors available, from which we selected their Bourbon (this one may not be available in all their locations) as well as the Dark Chocolate mousse. Only one employee working, was very nice and willing to hand out samples. Good dessert option in the Bay St shopping area.

Yelp
(Late Post) I was so happy to find out on Yelp that Humphry was opened here in Emeryville! I use to go to Humphry's often when I lived back in the city for late night dessert or after brunch. Don't skip dessert ya'll. The store is clean. The manager is very welcoming & extremely professional as me and my bf arrived. We sampled and chatted with the manager. ( wish we got his name. Super friendly! ) The Secret breakfast never fails.
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
We were exploring what you could Emeryville's Bay St mall and noticed they are creating a food court upstairs. Lo and behold I see this spot. The stores surrounding aren't yet open except this one. Surprised to see they opened a brick and mortar shop as we were door dashing them during the pandemic. I have fond memories of the SF location and glad to see them on this side of the bridge. East Bay can use some love - not all of us work at tech you know. Back to the stop, it's a quaint open space. If you want to hangout or daydream, this is a great spot to do so along with a float or ice cream in hand. They have many of the classic flavors and seasonal ones as well. I myself indulged in the secret breakfast float. Something about cornflakes in an ice cream is just a great combo. Hopefully this is here to stay.
google avatar

Mengshu Z.

Yelp
The most creative ice cream store in the Bay Area! Humphrey Slocombe at Bay Street works their magic on every single flavor they create. I tried all twelve flavors, and here are some of my favorites: Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee - super powerful coffee flavor, perfect balance of bitterness with sugar Matcha doodle - creative twist on matcha with neat chunks of snickerdoodle throughout S'mores: the best flavor, leans on the chocolatey side but captures the smokiness perfectly Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Bernard C.

Yelp
This is the second Humphry Slocombe I've been to, and I always love their ice cream. This one is a full store in the nice area of Bay Street Emeryville, right outside of the Regal Movie Theater. I got the Caramel Ice Cream, and it was great! They sometimes have rotating flavors though so just try whatever seems interesting. From my experience, all of the flavors are pretty good. As for the place itself, I really like the design and decor on the walls, and there are nice places to sit outdoors or walk around, since it's located right in Bay Street Emeryville.
google avatar

Troy F.

Yelp
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: you can read hundreds of reviews about this place, but it all boils down to this: if you're in the area stop by and try the secret breakfast ice cream. It's magical. Staff is friendly, they tend to keep the store temp warm in the winter which is nice, the prices seem a bit high (my only small gripe) but none of this really matters. Eat the secret breakfast ice cream and it will put a smile to your face.
google avatar

Rabiha A.

Yelp
I attended the soft launch for Humphry Slocombe and boy was it an experience for your taste buds! I tried every single flavor they had and none of them disappointed. The essence of each flavor came thru beautifully and wasn't overpowering, allowing you to enjoy each bite! They also offer vegan flavors. Most vegan ice creams I have had in the past were not good. However, ALL the vegan ice creams I tried here were AMAZING! I brought some home for my husband and he said, "Wow, this is some of the best ice cream I have had." Here is my breakdown on all the flavors: Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee - I normally hate coffee flavored ice creams, because they are so strong. This one was perfectly balanced. Malted Milk Chocolate - The epitome of the best chocolate flavored ice cream. Would be great as a shake or with whipped cream. Pumpkin Galette - Classic pumpkin taste. Think Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, but better and sweeter. Peanut Butter Fudge Ripple - Stronger on the peanut butter taste. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie - This was my favorite flavor! I savored this one and couldn't help but appreciate the subtle hint of salt that really brought out the flavor. It also has peanut butter cookie bits mixed in. The peanut butter and chocolate ratio on this one was done very well. Black Sesame - The name sounds off putting, but surprisingly really good. Salty, nutty and very sweet! Matchadoodle - If you love matcha, you must try this one! Hong Kong Milk Tea - Boba Milk tea in ice cream form, without the boba. Salted Caramel Cacao Nibs - Strong dark chocolate taste in this one. The nibs add a fun crunch. Oh Fudge - The fudge packs a punch! Very creamy and delicious. Tahitian Vanilla - Much better than your traditional boring vanilla ice cream. Secret Breakfast - Had a fun chewy experience go

Yelp
I've walked by a few times before they were opened and was curious once they finally opened. It's a fancy ice cream shop! My bestie and I went in and we were luckily enough to go when they had a promo. We took advantage of the buy 3 get 1 free promo they had on pints. The manager was super sweet and let us try a few flavors. I purchased the matcha, secret breakfast and smoked smores. Matcha was my favorite! I'm not much of buy ice cream to eat out kinda girl - rather just have something at home for when the mood hits, lol. But, Humphry Slocombe is a cute, different little spot to "treat yo' self" ; )

Spencer L.

Yelp
I ordered a hot fudge vanilla parfait here and there was barely any hot fudge. I was better off ordering from McDonalds or Costco if I knew what I was going to get. They had a picture of what I potentially would've gotten but I guess the picture is just there to bait people.

Chloe H.

Yelp
I got two scoops with a waffle cup, vanailla and milky and cream . It was $10. The ice cream itself has very heavy artificial flavoring, would NOT recommend. I could not bare to finish it. Walk down couple of block to get another ice cream.

Layla M.

Yelp
This place seriously has got some good ice cream. The service was well too he was happy to help us with choosing our flavors. I love the vibes of the place at night there's many lights and seating with either a heater, fire place, and cushioned seats.
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Stopped by after a movie and there wasn't a crazy long line outside so I was like why not to getting a scoop. The exterior and interior of the store is spotless, inviting and modern. It is a brand new location and the first eatery to open in the new dining terrace being built outside the theater after all but it's a nice vibe walking in. It's a pretty small space, some of the stools and tables are a little cramped inside but plenty of tables and space outside if you wish to hang around and get your fix. The workers were pleasant and at this location, you can sample as many flavors as you like which I took full advantage of. Everything tasted amazing and I wanted to take a little bit of everything (they do sell pints at this store too) but settled on a single scoop of Smoked S'mores which I can honestly say is one of the best tasting s'more flavored ice cream I've ever had. 5/5 stars! Another bonus for this location if you live close by is that they're open until 10 on weekends and it's a nice option to order a pint if you have a late night sweet tooth. I will definitely be coming back soon!

Robert J.

Yelp
This will be my last visit to this ice cream shop. I drove an hour to get to my favorite shop, and when I got there, I saw a sign saying that the worker would return at 8:30. However, it was already 8:40, the store wasn't open, and the employee working the shift on 4/22/24 wasn't there at all, so I decided to leave. How could someone post a time of return and then fail to show up on time? This is the second time that this has happened. The store needs better management.
google avatar

Cooper L.

Yelp
Delicious unusual ice cream combinations. Worth a try when you're down on Bay Street. Cereal flavor was yummy.
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
Ice was amazing. Also Edwin rocks! He gave excellent service made us feel extremely welcomed. He's very knowledgeable of the different flavored ice creams. We're for sure coming back!
google avatar

Tamika H.

Yelp
This is soooo good. Not your typical strawberry flavor! I highly recommend if you're a strawberry flavor fan. The cookies also give it a pop.

Holly D.

Yelp
Ice cream was average but our server was rude and only focused on those he wanted to help. Demonstrate good energy by making every person feel that their business is important and then you'll succeed!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
I like that it has Vietnamese ice coffee flavor. The ice cream is flavorful and creamy. I want to try floats next time.
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
Store front's very much inviting! Upon walking in was a slight wait but the guy working was very quick with each order yet attentive to the little details. Once it was my turn he was very friendly and easy to talk to. I got the vegan chocolate and peanut butter fudge and my god they're so delish! The chocolate doesn't seem so overwhelming and it was very creamy. The peanut butter is just creamy but it had somewhat a thick consistency which resembled the peanut butter. Very much happy with these two flavors and will be back to try the others!
