10 days in AK = 10 days of me eating as much seafood as I can get into myself. After a lifetime in the Seattle area and then a move to Las Vegas 5 years ago, I find that the fresh seafood is the thing I miss the most. More accurately, seafood is the main thing that I miss that wouldn't require a time machine to visit.
My sister has lived in the Anchorage area for most of her life and she knew I was jonesing for some fish and chips and clam chowder, and this place was at the top of her list of places to take me. As it turns out, clam chowder is not as big a thing in AK as it is in WA but the seafood chowder at Humpy's was a solid fill in. The flavor was fantastic and I also loved the fish and chips. I wish that the tarter was more pickle based like it is in WA but it was still pretty solid. Tarter is to WA what fry sauce is to UT. I guess that maybe that's unique to WA because everywhere else I go, it bares a much stronger resemblance to what we would consider to be remoulade in WA. Just to be clear, I vastly prefer the WA version that includes mayo, pickles, lemon juice, sugar, onion(chopped or granulated) and maybe a dash of hot sauce to anything resembling remoulade but after 5 years of living away, I've learned to work with it.
The fish was fresh, well prepared and glorious and the service was very good. the ambiance and vibe were AK bistro but in a good way. Ultimately, this will be at the top of my list whenever I return to the great white north!
