The 18 Best Fancy Fine Dining Restaurants In London

"At Hunan you don’t choose the menu, the menu chooses you. While that sounds a little like J.R.R Tolkien might be the restaurateur behind this place, it just means this is a no-menu Chinese restaurant. This Belgravia spot has a ‘trust us’ policy and the results are excellent. Deep-fried green beans, crispy pork, duck pancakes, and banana fritters with ice cream. It’s Cantonese food in a finishing school environment." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

The 20 Best Set Menus In London

"At Hunan in Victoria, you don’t need to worry about anything because you won’t know what you’re getting until it arrives at the table. This old-school, classy Chinese restaurant operates a ‘trust us’ menu where you tell them your dietary requirements, preferred spice level, and, you know, that you hate coriander, and they’ll do the rest. The lunchtime menu is £69.80, while the evening menu will set you back £119.80. And there must be a minimum of two diners. But it’s worth it as we’ve never had a bad meal here. The crispy fried pork in a bag is especially joyful." - jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

The 19 Best Restaurants In Chelsea

"Hunan is one of the ultimate ‘if you know, you know’ restaurants in London. The Chinese fine dining restaurant is discretely located on the Belgravia side, with a ‘trust me’ tasting menu situation. Just tell them what you don’t like and they’ll do the rest. We’ve tried incredible prawn toast and crispy duck here, along with spicy pork that arrives on your plate in a bag. It’s a great shout for lunch, but ask for the seats closest to the window as the back of the restaurant can feel a bit cramped." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

The 15 Best Restaurants For A Unique Dining Experience In London

"Remember that feeling when you were little and you didn’t know what your parents were going to make for dinner, but then it turned out to be your favourite thing, and you would be absolutely buzzing. Yeah, that’s kind of what going for dinner at this no-menu Chinese restaurant near Chelsea is like. It’s a somewhat plain and entirely inoffensive space, but Hunan isn’t a unique dining experience because of showiness. The special thing is that you don’t order here. Just tell them what you don’t and/or can’t eat, and then trust that they’ll bring you an excellent meal. Which is exactly what they’ll do. " - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

We got the prawn toast, sizzling beef in steak sauce, morning glory veg, and special fried rice. All delicious! Perfect blend of flavours. A must if you’re in Manchester.

Absolutely delicious! Tastes just like the stir-fried beef dishes I had back in Hunan. The flavor is rich, the beef is tender, and the spice level is perfect. Full marks — highly recommended!

Google
Fantastic food! Great service from the friendly staffs too. The stir fried pork with peppers was amazing, full of flavor and had the perfect balance of spicy and savory. The dry pot potatoes was full of wok hey/ smoky flavor. Every bite was an explosion of flavours. The mapo tofu was a bit different than what I am used to as there was a hint of sweetness to it, not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that it's a Hunan restaurant instead of Sichuan. But this does not mean it was not good, just different.

Yelp
Solid Hunan food. It looks like they specialize in sea bass here since you can order it in a number of different styles. We got the sea bass which was chopped into fillets (with bones) in flaming hot chili. The rice portion is large here (1 order is more than enough for 2). The beef braised pho noodles were also good; the flavor more herbal than expected. Prices here are very reasonable, and the ambiance is nice.

Yelp
I was born and raised in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan, and I came here with friends from Changsha, hoping to get some Hunanese taste and relieve homesickness a little bit. Unfortunately, the meal worsened our homesickness. We ordered 4 Hunanese dishes, which should have been their speciality, but only one was considered authentic. Some dishes didn't even look like pictures on the menu. The actual dishes we had were absolutely not what we expected. It's like you wanted some ravioli, only to be served with some Chinese dumplings, not what you want. The service was very disrespectful. There were other diners sitting at two tables next to us. The waitress came to their tables multiple times to check if their food was okay. How many times did they come to our table? ZERO. No one gave a damn about if we enjoyed our food (certainly we didn't!). Nobody tried to clean our table after we finished eating. Finally, when we asked to pay, we were given hand-written tickets with no detail of prices. We had no idea of what cost how much, but we didn't bother to know. This ingenuine restaurant was not for me, nor my friends. It has almost nothing related to Hunanese cuisine except for its name. No more chances for this place.

Yelp
A couple of foodie friends had visited this place in late 2013 and commented about the great food it serves on twitter. They suggested we arrange to go with them. 2 months in the planning to go to a Chinese restaurant and here we are at Hunan in the epicentre of Chinatown. We were a bit early so delved into the menu with a tsing-tao in hand. Every other customer was from China or this part of Asia suggesting we were not going to get the usual gooey beef and bambou mixture or the gelatinous chop suey. The menu is mesmerising. Before you even see any food you know you'll have to be back as you just want to try everything. Between the four of us we had a good go however. We ordered the salt chilli tripes (I love tripes), Braised duck in beer sauce, bean sprouts and peppers, smoked bacon kinda spicy stew, whole sea bass in chili sauce, smoked aubergines... Boy were we full. But the flavours were just fantastic. It's very spicy but not so that you can't taste the food. Plenty of garlic and soy sauce but superbly cooked. Service was really good too. The range of drinks isn't great but if you're happy with Tsing Tao then you're on. And chances are you'll be the only one drinking it in the restaurant too as the locals have a strange looking iced tea (I think). We all loved it and I will most certainly be back for more soon.

Yelp
I had extremely high expectations of Hunan which were probably unfair but it wasn't a major disappointment in any case. I ordered my two favourite dishes - fried chicken with chilli and aubergine with pork mince. Both were fairly good although involved lots of garlic which I realised too late was probably not a great idea to eat on a date. I tried to persuade the date to order the Hunan beef with cumin as I have previously eaten and adored lamb with cumin but he went for the sizzling beef which as he accurately pointed out tasted strangely similar to the pork with aubergine. Hm. His fried chicken wings were a little tough. I would give Hunan another go because it's reasonably priced and they have a pleasing selection of scary Chinese offal dishes on the menu, but it's probably not a good place to come for the first time with someone you are trying to impress!

Yelp
I found Hunan through a review on the Creative Tourist blog. The food here is great, and the menu is blissfully BS-free. Smoked things taste smoked, pickled things taste pickled, things that claim to contain meat do, indeed, contain generous amounts of meat. Nothing was skimped on, and the portions were great for the price. Two people could easily split a main and leave satisfied. The £2 chinese tea turned out to be a whole pot. Their homestyle, braised dishes left us full and happy. The bill was very reasonable, and the service was attentive without hovering. The major thing this place lacks is magic. All the food we had was great, but I'm not daydreaming about any of it afterwards. I agree with Natalie W. that this would make a very poor choice for an outing with someone you don't know well, like a first date or business lunch. If clay pots full of tripe and pickled cabbage sound like a good time to you, or if you're tired of ordering dishes with expensive ingredients, only to find they've been padded out with sweetcorn or somesuch, please make a trip here. There is so much on the menu I can't wait to try (duck tongues, I'm looking at you), I'll be back very soon.

Yelp
Duo Jiao Yu Tou ruined everything for me. All the other dishes are somewhat okay(not great by all means). The fish head is extremely fishy, yet lack the taste of seasoning. It tastes like they forgot to put salt in there. Not recommended for those who are Chinese or want to try real Chinese cuisine.

Yelp
Went here on the friday during chinese new year and was expecting it to be packed. It wasnt but it was probably due to the fact that it was just after 6pm when we met. I didnt really look at the menu as we were on a time schedule so my friend ordered for me. If you like your food hot then this is the place for you! Everything came with lashings of chilli and garlic. We had 3 dishes and rice had some very tasty noodles that were served with pak choi. They also serve hot pot and bbq dishes here which are cooked at your table by your own faur hand. I would like to cone back and try the hot pot as it looked interesting and a popular option.
