Where to Find the Best Tacos Al Pastor in and Around Boston - Eater Boston

"This relative newcomer in Needham gets its name from Nezahualcoyotl, a scholar, poet, warrior, and ruler in pre-Columbian Mexico whose name translates to “coyote who fasts.” The al pastor at Hungry Coyote is more chorizo-like, and more coarsely chopped than most renditions, but it’s still exquisite. Hungry Coyote is generous with its cilantro garnish, which brightens the dish. Hungry Coyote is open for takeout and delivery." - Samer Khudairi

Google
The food is super delicious and the service was excellent My favorite is tacos de Lengua- i recommend it this place 100%

Google
Delicious authentic Mexican food. Having moved from Texas where we were accustomed to good hot Tex-Mex food, we found these Mexican dishes to be very flavorful and well balanced. My husband had a burrito with lengua and I had fish tacos. It was our first visit, but one we very much enjoyed. Everyone was friendly. We ate in and the atmosphere was authentic and relaxing.

Google
I didn’t like the service. I felt like the lady was rude because she saw her Latino friends and in the middle of her asking me what would I like she walked away and then continued speaking Spanish and laughing with the guys. I was with my husband and we were ordering together and the guy ended up taking my order Food- The chicken was as ok but the overall taco salad tasted really good. Lots of food to fill your belly. You can put whatever you want inside. A little pricey though. Atmosphere-The place is beautiful. It could use a little work they had boxes everywhere, and a big box item in the bathroom. They have a nice light up sign you may want to take pictures by.

Google
Chicken burrito bowl: very average, very little flavor. Guac was just ok, could easily make better guac myself. Also very small amount of guac for a large amount of chips The chips were the best part, fresh made and piping hot. Very salty though.

Google
I visited this place today, and I have to say, it was an excellent experience! I had a delicious Mexican bowl 🍚 with fish that truly hit the spot. The homemade-style food was fantastic, and the salad 🥗 was incredibly fresh. Plus, the staff was exceptionally friendly. I’m definitely going back!

Google
Delicious tacos and very laid back. I love the detail of the beautiful plates they put your food on. My kids loved the decor and overall experience.

Andrew Lin

Google
Good: Chicken has nice flavor, and shrimps are well seasoned. Very creamy guacamole and freshly diced tomatoes. Spicy salsa has a nice kick. Needs improvements: Rice is too hard/not cooked enough. For the chips, maybe its common, but the salt stayed on top portion of the chips in a bag, so it was too salty at first and bottom is plain. Also, bathroom toilet was clogged. Overall it’s a nice Mexican food place, and I would come back again.

Google
Best tacos in MA. They were so good we ended up ordering 3 rounds 😋 Our favorites were the "al pastor" tacos. The corn tortillas too are so soft they just melt in your mouth. Overall a great family meal. The place is not big enough for large groups. The takeout counter was busy throughout the time we were there.

Yelp
Good for quick fill. A little greasy. But it was tasty. May come back again in the near future

Yelp
I came here for a nice Taco Tuesday (well Burrito Tuesday ) lunch. I ordered a small chicken burrito but it was so big I could only have half of lunch and saved the other half for dinner. I was surprised with how well wrapped it was given the size. The burrito tasted great for a verty reasonable price especially considering the size. Inside of the restaurant, there were a nice handful of people eating and relaxing. The overall place seemed laid back as most "made-to-order" quick restaurants are. I would recommend going there for any "Taco" Tuesday

Yelp
I feel sorry writing such a mediocre review for a place I was sure was going to be great. I placed an online order for a chicken burrito and received a very bland and disproportionate burrito. I ordered a chicken burrito and requested an additional scoop of steak, which they charged me extra for. I also got rice, pinto beans, pico, jalapeños, cheese, and guacamole. First off, they completed neglected my request for steak. Second, they added sour cream to my burrito which I did NOT order. While it is inappropriate to skip ingredients that a customer ordered, it is completely unacceptable to give a customer an ingredient that they did not order. This is very hazardous as people may have allergies. Especially with closed foods like burritos. Additionally, my burrito consisted of mostly jalapeños, so all I was tasting was spicy peppers. To top it off (for the meat they did give me) the chicken was dry and bland. I was expecting flavorful and spicy, as most Mexican places ace this. Not here. Not a great way to eat a burrito. I ended up tossing a good third of it out, as it was just jalapeños. I was looking forward to this place, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the high ratings I was seeing before. Many better burrito bars around the Boston area, do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Yelp
Place is very disorganized , order to the right, have to cut through to pick up your order on the left. Food was just OK.
google avatar

Yelp
Well, I was looking forward to this but left feeling underwhelmed. I ordered the bowl & I did not ask for guacamole as it cost more. The worker by accident put about 1/4 cup of guacamole on my order and then realized the mistake. Instead of giving it to me free of charge, he scooped out the guacamole with his hand and put it in the garage. Just felt really odd to do. And didn't feel like the most sanitary move. After that, he rushed me through my order and I didn't have the chance to add any sauces. He literally boxed my order up and brought it over to the register. Strange experience. Food was average, nothing crazy. Definitely a little bland and dry, especially with no sauces.

Yelp
This is, quite simply, "the spot." The food is incredible, the guy that runs it is endlessly entertaining and welcoming, there seems to be an unending list of regulars that stop in and catch up with the owner, the portion sizes are enough to save some for the next two meals. This is our second time coming here, our first time was just three days ago. It is just that good. We drove from boston just to get lunch here and we will definitely be doing it many more times. Do yourself a favor, give this place a try.

Yelp
Service was quick and very friendly staff. The carnitas are bomb! Burritos are stuffed!

Yelp
Some have mentioned quality control issues at this restaurant. I had a very frightening experience here and would urge you all to please please avoid this place!! My husband and I ordered two burritos to go and upon biting into my burrito I chomped on something really hard, my husband thought I cracked my tooth! Fortunately I did not but when I spit out it was revealed to be part of a broken blade. It could have been much worse than a broken tooth! We called the restaurant and they tried to blame it on their meat supplier. What the blade looks like is part of a tomato chopper. For your own safety do not eat here!

Yelp
Great food, efficient service. I really wish they'd stop using styrofoam though. I'd go even more often if they had biodegradable containers.

Yelp
the counter service was great: kind and quick employees. the decor and artwork was fun (the story of the Hungry Coyote god is painted on the wall). but the food... the food was excellent! i tried the burrito and tacos: great flavor, nice salsas, and not overly complicated topping selection. i'd love an even larger size burrito option (i'd pay more , but i got the regular and it was good. i'll definitely be going back.

Seyda C.

Yelp
The food was great when they first opened, but now it's hit or miss. I ordered a burrito with chorizo, but the chorizo was oddly stringy and didn't taste good. I ended up throwing it away. It seems like they have quality control issues. Chipotle is a better option.

Conor M.

Yelp
Highly recommend Tasty, authentic food served by a friendly and energetic staff. Awesome place to grab lunch or a drink with dinner...or with lunch if that's your thing! I will be eating here every time we visit the island

Erin F.

Yelp
I would prefer to eat left over Taco Bell. The meat was dry and had little to no seasoning or flavor. The tortillas are also bland and a dry consistency. 3 of the items I tried to order weren't available. Everything we ordered was basically inedible and we threw away 80% of it. I hope someone opens a quality Mexican taco/burrito spot but this ain't it.

Kosta C.

Yelp
Very authentic tasting Mexican food. The carnitas were very flavorful. The owner was also a great guy. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also very nice. Probably the best taco I've had in Massachusetts. I would definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Jimmy H.

Yelp
Tried this place today and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality. I got an al pastor burrito--the meat was super flavorful, the pico, guac and other add-ins were also super flavorful and balanced. Service was also fast and friendly.

Yelp
This is a great place for a quick bite. The food is fresh and servers are great. One of the best burritos I have ever had.

Linda G.

Yelp
Sooooooooo good , I feel like there are so many places that now to burritos and this one is the best. The service is great .. they are a bit expressive but everything is super good !!! Would highly recommend !!

Diana B.

Yelp
Delicious food! Tasty hot so flavorful! Every layer of the torta was Devine! My new soot

Yelp
The special burritos are delicious, but pricey at $15. I ordered a cheese quesadilla. It was a flour tortilla steamed with barley melted cheese. It was not griddled/pan seared as every other quesadilla I've ever had has been. Don't know if they forgot or were in a rush or what, but who doesn't grill a quesadilla? I would have given this place more stars, otherwise.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
I had the carnitas bowl, which was a very tasty, filling lunch. I enjoyed the carnitas, black beans, pico de gallo, plentiful lettuce, cheese, flavor of the hot sauce, fresh cilantro and sour cream. It was good. The downside to me was the lettuce was very wet, which made the rice a soggy mush. It would have been awful in a burrito. The shredded lettuce was soaking in water and needed to be strained better. Also, I decided to dine in rather than get takeout, and the tables and chairs were pretty dirty during peak lunch (12:45pm). Otherwise, this was an enjoyable lunch spot and I'd probably be a regular if I lived or worked in the area.

Alex M.

Yelp
There burritos are the perfect size, there food is delicious, the staff are nice, what's not to like about here?
google avatar

Chrissy L.

Yelp
Got the nachos -- wow did not expect that much food. Definitely satisfied the nacho craving and then some. Also got the al pastor, carnitas, and steak tacos--hefty and delicious- especially the al pastor. Run, don't walk!
google avatar

Kara G.

Yelp
We order from this place quite frequently, and it is hands down the BEST Mexican cuisine in the area. Always cooked just right, fresh and full of flavor! Definitely a life long customer- keep doing what you are doing folks- it's delicious!!

Yelp
I went for lunch with a friend on a weekday - we had a few people in front of us, but it was not super crowded. After reading the reviews on here, I was swayed from a burrito, but opted for the burrito bowl (I think with al pastor??). It was HUGE and I ate the entire thing. It was very flavorful - everything was delicious. It was so filling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I can't decide if I should get the same thing next time, or try something different!!

Wendy B.

Yelp
I admit, I have a bit of OCD! When I go into a restaurant like this I get put off by the meal ingredients being scattered about. I like to see the lettuce in the lettuce section, the beans in the bean container, etc. This was not the case here as items were dripped from one container to another. The beans were splattered around all over the top of the serving area. Some of the meat looked dried out and there was a slight film on the beans. In site of that, I found my burrito to be quite good for a generic type burrito. My husband found his fajits to be just "okay". I did not find the decor at this venue to be pleasing and I would have liked to eat my dinner without hearing two televisions blaring with two separate football games.

Ankit G.

Yelp
$14 for a messy burrito and unclean place (especially the kitchen space). Lettuce was a tub of water with a couple of shredded leaves floating around (of course, I don't want lettuce in my burrito.) Shocked to find such high ratings for this place. :/

Sandra P.

Yelp
I've been here about 5 times now. The first time this happened, I gave them a pass. But how many more times will I order online and specify the sauce I want only to pick up and find out once I drive back home that I don't' have the right sauce. When I called I was given the same excuse "we're out of mole so we put green sauce on it" - so you don't advise me when I pick up?!! I definitely won't be returning - it's just too much of a hassle! And when I requested a refund I was met with resistance and even told "I don't speak English" before hanging up.
google avatar

Chad D.

Yelp
Ordered online for pickup. They gladly took my money and when I showed up the sign said open but the door was locked and no one would answer. They didn't answer the phone either. I am even getting email reminders to pick up but they are refusing to answer the phone or door. Hungry Coyote is a total rip off and I now have to go to my credit card company to reverse the charge. There's no way to cancel online. All this for a burrito? No way. Save yourself the problems and get Ana's Taquaria in Newton. It's only 2 miles away and they don't rip off their customers.
google avatar

Aa A.

Yelp
The food was ok nothing really special and the nachos were soggy. But be careful of what they charge you. I ended up paying $41 for nachos and 2 burritos the other day. This seems like a ripoff to me. The guy in charge had an attitude and I didn't feel like asking him why it was so high especially that it says burritos $7.
google avatar

Esther T.

Yelp
Very good burrito bowl. Ingredients were fresh and delicious and the quality of the chicken was great. Also loved the way the chicken was prepared. More like shredded chicken instead of chunks of blackened chicken. Took a star away bc the actual meal missed some ingredients from the online order.

DD W.

Yelp
Very excellent food, especially the burritos and tacos. A ton of heart and love go into every meal
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
Shockingly delicious. We didn't expect to find such incredible Mexican food in central Massachusetts! Everything was delicious - the chorizo, carne asada, and even the chicken. It was all very flavorful and tasted authentic. The salsas were excellent! We'll be back to explore more on the menu. Highly recommend!

Dan V.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Ordered a buritto and they didn't put on the sour cream, pico de galo, guacamole, onions or cilantro. The chips were mostly chewy ie not fresh, from days ago. They mixed them with fresh chips in order to make more money and hope the customer wouldn't notice or not bother complaining. Message to the owners: If you don't care about the food you put out why don't you quit? You should quit, you're the worst. There is no excuse for this. Ingrediant costs for Mexican food are cheap!
google avatar

Mazzle A.

Yelp
Wanted a quesadilla and was not disappointed, added some chicken and some guac, totally awesome! I would definitely get food from here again, quick service, very friendly! Churros were tasty too! We ordered online which made it easier for pickup. Can't wait to go again.

Mariana O.

Yelp
I work in Needham and lately I've been noticing a lot of people coming in and out of this place. Today I came here for lunch and I was really surprised when I saw this nice little spot, with nice and friendly staff! Food is fresh, good and generously served. They have a full bar and tables, all very nice and clean. I think this place is specially cool because is a totally new idea when it comes to a place to eat in this area. Most of Needham restaurants are for burger and pizza, the basic American food. I see this as a nice, versatile and fresh new idea. Good spot for lunch or happy hour after getting off the train.
google avatar

Esel S.

Yelp
Don't walk, RUN to this place! I got to try this place tonight and I'm glad I did. The menu offers tacos, burritos, bowls, salads, quesadillas, fajitas and tamales. Everything was so fresh, well seasoned and the staff are super helpful. Not to mention the music was awesome! Seating is comfortable, big screen TV's, a bar and quick but fresh service. The food was really good...well executed and fair price. I really hope this place survives and they make it. A note to the owners, thank you so much for opening this place and sharing your cuisine with our community. A couple suggestions: have a self service salsa bar, have some more condiments in your ingredients like cabbage, olives, corn, radish, etc. Mexican street corn, churros and kids meals would be nice additions to the menu! Thank you!!!

Yelp
I have had take-out at Hungry Coyote twice, both times burritos. Struggled between 2 and 3 stars. I want well-intentioned businesses to succeed and I believe that a new restaurant deserves a kinder level of consideration, but I can't give three stars to a restaurant that I don't wish to return to. As already described in other reviews, the burritos were nearly devoid of flavor (as opposed to mild, not hot enough, etc). Steak, though plentiful, was stringy and chewy. Ingredients not distributed well the second time. In an ordering system that consists of the customer listing each ingredient, the unrequested chopped onion and occasional cilantro were an irritation that prevented me from getting any momentum of enjoyment from the meal. I write this humbly and in hopes that the owner or manager take these early reviews as opportunities to course-correct.

Liz B.

Yelp
This place has straight up amazing carnitas and you should go for that alone. I would say the vibe of this place is that it's for people who already know Mexican food pretty well, know exactly what they want, and order that. And it's great at that, I loved being able to tell the chef exactly what I wanted and have it made fresh how I asked. What I'm saying is that the 'menu' is very loose and if you're like my very white suburban mother this will be confusing to you. But I actually think this is a feature, not a bug! They could put more signage up to help folks out but I do like the open menu concept. This place is super fast, the food was great, and they gave me about three meals worth of food so I think it's a bargain. The carnitas and pollo asada were both perfectly cooked. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
I am hesitant to write about the restaurant because I know they just opened and the owner (who was very nice) was working the front counter and I could tell was trying hard. Unfortunately the food was not good, my table mate got a salad and I got a burrito. By the way $15 for a Burrito? The burrito was hugh but had almost no flavor. I had to ask for hot sauce just to eat it and even then I threw half away. I overheard others try to order menu items and the owner said they don't make it yet... Mole, plantains, breakfast items. My poor table mates salad had cold meat on it. He was too embarrassed to send it back, I hope they can tighten up the ship because I would love to have a go to place in Needham for Mexican food.

Yelp
i've been waiting for a mexican place in needham since i moved here four years ago. my prayers have finally been answered with hungry coyote. from the absolutely delicious, fresh food (i scarfed it all done before i even got to my beer which is very unusual), to the amazing staff this is hands down an amazing place all around. also the bar manager was so sweet and knowledgeable, as were all the staff. the beer selection is moderately small but what do have to offer is a great variety of some excellent bethis place will definitely will become one of my go to spots. and i can't wait to have a michelada next time, i've been craving one of those for a while so i was extremely happy to see it on the menu. i honestly don't have anything bad to say about this place. overall i highly, highly recommend. update: some of my coworkers who have gotten burritos there were disappointed with those. so my conclusion is the tacos we're amazing, burritos not so much. knowing it's a new business we're all hoping they'll work on it and start producing burritos as good as their tacos were. we'll definitely be giving them another chance.

Amaresh S.

Yelp
I ordered ahead online and was initially surprised at the relatively higher cost, but when I picked up my meal, it turns out that they give you quite a lot for what you pay. The food is good here and it's clear they use fresh ingredients. I got the burrito bowl and the nachos and it was huge! Their guacamole is top notch and is pleasantly garlicky and citrusy, too. A great spot to go to for huge portions!
google avatar

Bharat Y.

Yelp
Took the kids for dinner. Great food. Wife loved her margarita. Very family friendly and cool staff. Working out the kinks as we went soon after opening, but we had a great time. Great option in town. Portions are huge. Will go back for sure.
google avatar

Mara M.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my carnitas bowl with rice, beans, salad, salsa, sour cream, and more. I have been to Mexico a few times and the food at Hungry Coyote tastes very authentic! I don't usually like Mexican food in the US but thoroughly enjoyed my bowl and had a bite of my husband's delicious tacos and am excited to come back. Everything was super clean and the service was great! Very nice people behind the counter!
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
So yummy!!! My new favorite local Mexican. Fresh ingredients, everything seasoned perfectly and cute atmosphere. Love that you can order a cocktail, too
google avatar

J G.

Yelp
So tasty. Their burritos are like small footballs. Usually order the chicken grande. Can only eat half in one sitting. The chicken is very tender. Delish. We picked up a little late, and by the time we got our order home they were still warm.
google avatar

Philip B.

Yelp
It's a Saturday night and I'm hungry. This place was just what I needed. I ordered a Steak Burrito to-go and was served promptly. The meat had the right amount of spice and not overcooked. The rest of the topping were added to my liking, quickly wrapped, and I was on my way. You get a good portion for your money so if the price seems high it's worth it. To those who might call in an order I would say this. If you're only ordering for yourself just go there and get your order filled while you wait. It's not like a pizza joint where you have a 20 min wait. I found my server to be very polite and quick with my order. I will definitely be back and would recommend the Hungry Coyote to everyone to try. Once the COVID-19 outbreak is over and this place stays open later I'll be coming here a lot. For now they close at 9pm on Saturday.
google avatar

Vincent G.

Yelp
Love their Al Pastor burriyos. They have a friendly staff. My current go to Burrito joint

Sam G.

Yelp
Great food even better staff! Open thru the pandemic. Still have indoor seating. They have cool neon signs too.

Brendan S.

Yelp
By far the best and most authentic Mexican food I have had in New England. The carnitas, al pastor and chorizo are particularly tasty. I have been searching for authentic Mexican since moving to Boston almost a decade ago and this is my go to spot. Highly recommend.

Andrew B.

Yelp
Good burritos, quick. They take Apple Pay/Android. No nonsense. Ask for fresh chips and they'll dunk them in the fryer and make them warm for you!
