Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Montavilla Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Hungry Heart began life as a bakery food cart before getting a brick-and-mortar right off of Stark in Montavilla. Today, the cute, modern cafe offers its ever-popular line of cupcakes alongside pastries both sweet and savory, sandwiches, granola, and Stumptown coffee. Diners can grab a dozen cupcakes to go, or sit in one of the few little tables inside or out. After occupying a larger spot on Stark for several years, Hungry Heart has moved back into its current location a block away." - Nathan Williams

Wonderful food (literally everything is awesome), wonderful staff, wonderful coffee, wonderful atmosphere. Just wonderful. Only wish there was more space and their old restaurant and fuller menu would come back, so I could try it - apparently that was wonderful too.

Google
We were regulars when they expanded to serve full breakfast. Literally everything was unbelievable and we took everyone there. The return to the tiny storefront with no real kitchen marked a complete end to our patronage. We aren't into paying high prices to stand in line and go home with it. I miss the community atmosphere and large patio of the large location. The extensive hot savory breakfast options gone. When they opened we gave them 3 tries in the tiny storefront, and it was horrific (freezer burnt OJ, cold "heated" items, dry, etc), so returning to place without a full kitchen...old traumas resurfaced. They are kind and offered free redo to return, but l couldn't do it. There remain lines, so l suppose they profit more this way. They are truly gifted when they have wings - sad they clipped them.

This was a great space with super friendly staff. The coffee was amazing and clearly the barista had skill. They had many gluten free and vegan pastries on display and the food menu looks nice. I plan to come back and try their food. The coffee alone was so good though best sugar free almond milk latte I've had in a few weeks of trying new places.

Came for the coffee; stayed for the sandwiches; will DEFINITELY return for the soup! My wife wanted a hot cup of coffee on a cold, soggy October morning. I wasn't in the mood for coffee, but I was hungry for something warm and comforting; thus, I began poking around online for a café reasonably closed to home that looked intriguing, and could satisfy both of our cravings. Hungry Heart checked all the boxes. The interior is a little sparse, in terms of seating and indoor dining (fallout from the height of COVID, perhaps?), but we grabbed an empty table near the (artificial) fireplace, placed our order: a tuna salad sandwich, a classic Everything bialy, a golden milk, double shot espresso, two oat milk lattés, one using horchata, and a bowl of the tomato soup. Drinks arrived first, in a handful of minutes, with the food hot on its heels. I have nothing but rave things to say about everything: the tuna salad sandwich was fantastic (bonus points for using capers, dill, and pickles instead of celery!), the Classic bialy hearty and satisfying, and the soup - otherworldly! Among the best I've had, anywhere, all by itself; but the addition of creme fraiche and basil oil elevating it even higher. Too often, the inclusion of basil can be a bit overwhelming, as it is quite often overused, but infusing it in oil? Stroke of genius. As a former barista, I can be critical of boutique café beverages, but the staff here know what they're doing. Thick, rich foam, correct temperature, quality grounds - you're in good hands here. The staff were also friendly and helpful, offering suggestions, clarifications, and general conversation. Although we didn't utilize it (this time), online ordering is also available, and seems pretty easy to navigate. You can even order ahead for pickup the next day, after they've closed, and choose your preferred pick up time. Pretty great for a local operation! All in all, Hungry Heart PDX has left me, well...hungry (and thirsty) for more. We will absolutely be back!

Google
Cute bakery/coffee shop. The food and espresso drinks were great. The gluten-free bundt was awesome and I appreciate they had good gluten-free options. The burrito was also really good. The seating seemed pretty limited, but it's a small space so I'm not sure they could do anything differently. My only issue with the experience was hair in the burrito wrapping and a hair on my bundt cake. We also saw a man pull a long hair out of his breakfast sandwich.

Google
Really really good! Got a nitro cold brew with vanilla cold foam, a vanilla cardamom morning roll, and The Classic sandwich with bacon on a cheddar jalapeno bialy. The nitro cold brew is maybe the best coffee I've ever had, and has essentially ruined all other coffee for me. Couldn't really taste any vanilla, but it is so damn smooth and not too sweet, with crushed ice YESSSS 🙌🏼 The vanilla cardamom roll was simply heavenly. Do it, get it. The Classic was delicious and a very generous size. My *only* criticism is that it was very poorly constructed, like the person who made it wasn't looking at it while making it. The ingredients were lumped together off to one side with about a quarter of the bialy empty. Even the bacon was all wadded up. After a 10 minute car ride home, the ingredients were all melted together, so it was a pain to reconstruct. But again, it was super delicious. That cheddar jalapeno bialy is to die for. The space itself is very small, but really cute and inviting, and the staff was pleasant! Highly recommend.

Google
This was my first (and still a fav), amazing bakery experience in Portland. Their cardamom roll is the BEST in the city. I like that they returned to their roots at their original location! Don’t miss this place!

Off the busy street if Stark is a cozy little cafe. Plants, books and local goods are packed into the bookshelves on your left as you walk in. The door does stick some times so don't be discouraged, just push a little harder! I got the dirty chai and it was so delicious! I'm a sucker for chai though 😂 they have tasty looking pastries, I didn't try them though because I was pleasantly surprised to see a breakfast burrito on the menu! 😍 I've craved this breakfast burrito for days after having it and have vowed to go back at least once a month 😂 I know a little over exuberant. But when you find a cute spot with amazing food you gotta treat yo self! It can get busy and the space is small but I highly recommend stopping by if you have the chance. Also everyone I've met that works there, are just lovely. I look forward to my next visit 🌯

Yelp
Great friendly service! Delicious treats and yummy coffee. Very calm and casual atmosphere. It's a very small space, highly recommend ordering beforehand.

Yelp
Wonderful little bakery with breakfast sandos and excellent coffee. The staff here are the best! It's very homey and has a true locals vibe.

Yelp
Hungry Heart is a friendly, community-minded bakery and coffee shop in the Montavilla neighborhood. They started as a food cart back in 2010. Now this brick and mortar offers cupcakes, coffee, breakfast and lunch, soups, pastries, cookies, muffins, and more. I stopped by recently while I was running errands in the neighborhood. It was a great space to sit and work for an hour or two between other obligations. I don't know who their roaster is but I quite enjoyed the coffee, and the quiche was gigantic and delicious. The space looks like it's transitioning from COVID to-go orders back to dine in, but there is plenty of seating. Street parking. Friendly staff. Solid overall!

Yelp
We found out about this spot in the "to good to go" which is trying to fight food waste (yelp if you listen buy that company from under armor lol it's a perfect fit inside yelp). We never have found this place - and it is is just opposite of one of our most favorite places - lazy Susan. Crazy but that is how life works. We are so happy we found this place. It offers creation nowhere seen. Like a mock tuna salad that is so delicious even I - that eats tuna will take over the real tuna sandwich. But of course they also have meat so I had the BEST bagel. Which in case is not a regular bagel but a polish one that is made with a bit different dough. It's was delicious as well. They also have a nice bar area so the girls Brunch out is safe! Give it a try you will not be mad at me :)

Yelp
This place is so tasty, fast, and refreshing! I've made an accidental habit of the Vanilla Cardamom morning rolls (THEY ARE SO GOOD!) and their cold brews with lavender! They are very sweet to customers with dogs, and will offer you treats for your furbaby!

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up 2g2g and decided to stay for lunch w mumsies and check out the menu. Order up: -Tuna melt w salad -Croissant sammy (club) w tortilla soup All dishes were delish and would order again! Space has high ceilings, spacious and good amount of seating w tables and booths to choose from. Wonder if there was more avail seating pre-covid. They also had a Q fake fireplace in corner by couple tables w some plants for some nice ambiance. Would def come back through to try other menu items.

Yelp
I order from them several times a week.... I probably spent thousands of dollars here on their baked goods and breakfast. I haven't even tried their lunch or soups... yet. This is all via DoorDash btw. I have to go there and dine in one day. It's silly how much I spend on DoorDash. I love bringing pastries back to the Bay Area when I visit family. They love the banana walnut Bundt, bookies, croissants (all of them) but omg the hand held pies!!!! Everything is fresh, they have seasonal stuff which is something I'm always excited for, and nothing it's overly sweet or rich. You can't really go wrong with anything you order from here. Anyone that comes to visit us I will order from here but next time I'm going there to dine in. I have more photos which I will update later but this is just from half my order this weekend.

Yelp
Cute little coffee/bakery. I ordered the horchata oat latte iced. Super good! By the color I was expecting it to be bitter but it had the perfect amount of sweet. One my my fav coffees I have had in Portland. There is no wifi so be prepared and have a hotspot!
google avatar

Heather N.

Yelp
Their Horchata Oat-milk Latte is one of the first lattes with sugar I actually like! (I usually drink black coffee) Also, their breakfast burrito with pickled onions and their seasonal spiced peach coffee cake was next level. One of my favorite cafes in the hood!

Yelp
A chic and cozy cafe/coffee shop in montavilla with lots of hot breakfast options and a pastry display case. They are known for their bialys and serving Tostada coffee. Good amount of seating for small groups or individuals. Con is that bathroom is not in the cafe but shared within the building with other businesses and the hallway is cold in the winter to walk down. Staff has been friendly and courteous. This is a popular place to get together with friends or bring the family for a weekend treat.

Yelp
Favorite bakery in PDX. I can't have dairy so having DF options made with fresh ingredients is nice to have. They're always consistent and so tasty!

Yelp
My friend and I grabbed breakfast to go from Hungry Heart and it was pretty darn good! Ordering online was super easy: add to cart, decide your pick up time and pay. We still had to wait about 10 minutes after our pick up time, but the food was hot and fresh. We got the hash brown (which you must order)- perfectly crispy on the outside and dreamy on the inside. Breakfast tostadas with carnitas- these were good but definitely needed the green salsa on top that it came with. Biscuit with jam/butter- dense and good portion, just a tad on the dry side for me. Horchata Oat Milk Latte- super tasty without being too sweet. Make sure to give it a stir before drinking as all the horchata-goodness sinks to the bottom. Good prices and yummy food! Will definitely be back!9

Yelp
What a gem of a bakery! I started with a cup of coffee (I need to ask about refills). It was a great brew! I tried a cinnamon roll. It was a little dry, but the frosting more than made up for that! Sweet sweet goodness! There were a ton of other options, I can't wait to get back to try them out. The outdoor seating is great when the sun rolls around and warms it up a little. Definitely check Hungry Heart out!

Ashley H.

Yelp
Food is amazing. The burrito, horchata latte, and cinnamon roll are top tier. But, I found a piece of plastic in my salsa, looked like a piece of a glove. They said there was nothing the could do for me. I almost swallowed it and was also sharing with my 1 year old.

Scarlet P.

Yelp
food: everything I've tried has been really good! Everything seems to be made with care and attention to detail. They have so many yummy looking artisanal treats. I've had their burrito, various drinks, vegan tuna sandwich, hash brown, and their bialy's (which is basically a bagel but made differently). The prices are good for everything too! ambiance: there is plenty of place indoor and outdoor and the vibes are nice and cute. Sometimes it can get a little crowded but that's a good thing for them! service: All the people I've interacted with have been very nice and they all seem to be working hard. My overall rating would be a 10/10!

Yelp
We discovered this little bakery after lunch, but that didn't stop us from getting some treats. We got a dozen of macarons to go. They looked beautiful and have good favors. Personally i thought they are a bit too sweet, but it's just my personal taste. Next tome when I get there, I'll try some of their pastries instead! The shop was small but it felt cozy. It was filled with retro furniture and decorations. There were a few ppl there with their laptop and it felt calm. We didn't stay long but I'd imagine it's a good place to chill.

Yelp
The sweets and breakfast was really good, I got a burrito, Sweet roll, and some velvet coffee, though it reminded me more of a Black Forest cake. I loved my time here though it was brief. service was good and the place is cute. One of these days when I move here ill probably frequent here.
google avatar

Anne F.

Yelp
Mmm solid choice for a breakfast sandwich and hash browns. The bialy is similar to a bagel. Perfect flavor and texture.

Weslie I.

Yelp
TIP: They have online ordering. If there's something (pastry, specialty latte, etc,) that you absolutely want, ORDER IN ADVANCE for pick up bc it might be sold out when you arrive, in a matter of minutes *sob* Everything I wanted was sold out by 10am. COFFEE: The lavender latte was okay. Not as robust in flavor as I'd hoped, and could barely taste the espresso. Much better hot than iced since it gets watered down. The horchata oat latte (hot) was definitely good though. PASTRIES.. goat cheese and chive scone was phenomenal. The cinnamon coffee cake muffin thing is also yummy. FOOD: Breakfast burrito was mediocre IMO, it's missing something seasoning / flavor wise. I wouldn't order it again, but my spouse who split it with me enjoyed it - my guess is bc the potatoes in it were fried and slightly crispy almost like potato wedges and she's a French fry addict. SERVICE: don't expect speedy service. They're pretty busy fulfilling online orders, 3rd party orders, and in-store orders. Took prob 20 min to get everything. Not bad, just not instant - so be patient.

Yelp
Raced over here before they closed to see if they had vanilla morning rolls left. On their website they are advertised as having vanilla pastry cream, yum! Sadly, they did not have pastry cream, they charged full price right before closing and I will probably not return. I have worked in many bakeries FOH too.

Love The East Sid E.

Yelp
Hungry heart just gets better and better. Love their constant re-imagining. Soft serve place at their old location on 80th is tops too, of course. Of note! They offer a really excellent brunch and booze menu on MONDAY. Let me say that again so it gets picked up in searches. Hungry Heart offers brunch on Monday! Chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, huevos rancheros, breakfast tostada. Whoop whoop! All week long they have a homemade hash brown patty deep fried and if they're not busy they will fry you up some eggs any day of the week. I would upload that photo but I already ate it, couldn't wait. Just love my local bakery to pieces.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
A much more peaceful vibe than the super popular coffee shop around the corner. My Americano was very good. They offer a somewhat creative selection of pastries and sandwiches; choices are ample, not just minor consideration. The thyme croissant is the next item on the order list. Prices are fair, they don't seem to be trying for a super high bar profit margin. The kale soup and awesome homemade bread (not the baguette or bialy) was a winner. Unfortunately, I did not care for the big Blondie with salted caramel. The interior is small, but not tiny. Atmosphere is homey, not fine wood grain furniture stiff or high hipster heaven. Staff was friendly.

Yelp
Delicious food! Great prices! Love the bunny wallpaper. Wish there was more seating. Got a bialy and it was sooo good!

Yelp
This place not only has great coffee and food, it is a small business with a ton of heart and inspiring social consciousness. Support them please!

Yelp
On a hot summer day their rose cardamom iced latte and mint mojito cold brew were perfection. Light & lovely, such a refreshing treat :)

Yelp
For some reason, I can't post photos, after I sent my review, the 1st, 2nd, or even the 4th day! So, here I am, updating my review, still without photos! My favorite is the Nutella Danish! It's huge, but we cut them in 3rds, so we can taste the rest. On the 4th day, we heat it up in the microwave, covered for 20 seconds, and it was so good! I like my pastries, like they just come out of the oven! We also bought the Bacon Cheddar Scallion Scone. I like this, too!

Anna W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I never heard of this place before but decided to try the app "too good to go" where instead of the bakery wasting the food, you can buy the food. I got a couple bagels and a pastry and the bagel was out of this world. I am now so excited to be a regular customer here and see other things they have on their menu. Also, the staff that assisted me was so friendly. The vibe is so relaxing.
google avatar

Leslie K.

Yelp
Don't go there. They advertise gluten free desserts. We got there at noon and they had zero. We ordered a cup of soup and a side salad. They served us a cup of soup and gigantic salads. I drove across town to get there. It was a major disappointment! You need a key to get into the ladies room. The gentleman saw I was having difficulty getting into the room. He sat there. After my third trip back to ask him, I finally had to say, will you please help me get into the ladies room! Please save yourself the aggravation!!!

Melanie S.

Yelp
The food and latte was good, as well as the service. However, couldn't enjoy sitting here with all the nats flying at you while you're trying to eat. We had to get up and switch where we were sitting and still was followed by nats and couldn't finish eating my food as they had got into it.
google avatar

Sheri H.

Yelp
Came here because I saw a sign on the sidewalk saying "COFFEE " so I followed. And because I love the Bruce Springsteen song Hungry Heart! I got a hot latte with a honey lavender syrup that they make fresh in store. It was delightful!!! All the pastries and sandwiches sounded and looked so good, I'd definitely recommend this place to someone looking to work and snack at the same time. It isn't huge so I'm not sure how full it'd get during the day. I'm happy I followed the sign to Hungry Heart, I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Melissa O.

Yelp
I've only stopped in for drinks and things in their pastry case, but good golly does everything taste magical! My tastebuds are dancing and sliding down rainbows from the first bite to the very last crumb (no judgement here if you've ever licked the inside of the to-go bag). Our favorites are the cookies and anything made with the croissant dough. We're still dreaming about these savory danishes; the pizza (kids) and green bean ricotta (me). SO GOOD! If you haven't stopped in, you're definitely missing out (but hey, more for us). No seriously, it'll be one of your newest faves (we were going multiple times a week in the warmer months).
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy spot for pastries, sandwiches, coffee and other drinks! One of my favorite places for breakfast or lunch when I'm in the Montavilla area. The bialy sandwiches are spongy with a good amount of eggs, meat, etc. Smoothies are super refreshing. The passion fruit donut was like a flaky frosted pastry, not too heavy or oily, with a great fruity flavor. Other yummy things I've had are the banana chocolate loaf, BLT croissant, and hot cocoa. The workers are always friendly and welcoming, and there's a nice outdoor seating area with flowers and bright cheery tablecloths. Online ordering is really convenient and saves time if you're in a hurry. There's a selection of local goods for sale inside too.
google avatar

Yelp
I went to this restaurant to pick up some onion bagels and they don't make them. I bought a cheese bagel instead. The bagel was good, but I probably will not go back. Service was good.

Yelp
Great customer service for my first time visit. Swung by to grab box of minis before HH @ neighbor, Observatory. My Mom was coming in soon,& I wanted to introduce her to just how good food is in this city:) I went thru at least 7 flavors and in the end, I left only about 6 for the folks waiting behind me. They sell off day olds for 75 cents too! Memorable and moist, great rich frosting a. Can see exactly why they won on national TV!
google avatar

Yelp
The new location is the BEES KNEES! Super friendly staff and an amazing menu. PRO-TIP- order online so you don't have to wait a long time for your order- as they can get SUPER busy!

Yelp
Best bakery in town! So lucky to live close to this wonderful place. Everything I've tried here has been 5 stars.

Yelp
I've eaten here 4 times and have no complaints at all. Their sandwiches are fantastic. One of the best tuna salad sandwiches I've ever had. The staff are always friendly and food serves fast. Good coffee as well. Al's has outdoor seating that allows dogs, which is always a plus.

Yelp
I would have liked to give this place at least 4 stars (the overall feel wasn't Wow enough for me to give it 5 stars although I do want to bc of the cupcakes). I took off a star for it's average service and the person handled the macaroons with her bare hands - this is the same person that handles the cashier, touches cash, credit cards and the iPad screen that customers also touch to sign. I got 4 mini cupcakes for $5.50. It's a good deal! They were good. The cupcakes have multiple layers: there is the bass cake, a flavored jam/cream inside, the frosting on top and some have accessories on top of the frosting, like the coconut flakes, nut or small slice of fruit. This layering is appreciated as it takes more effort to make this. I also got 4 macaroons for $7.50. The pistachio tasted off. The salted caramel was good, not too sweet, not too salty for my taste. The texture was firm, yet soft and chewy. When bitten into, it cracked of course, but nothing crumbled or flaked off. Will buy the sea salt caramel flavor again.

Yelp
The cardamon carrot cake was recommended and a lovely surprise! I see m a baker and very picky about my sweets. Yet this slice really impressed me so much that I went back for something else- unfortunately it was closed.

Yelp
Hungry Heart is one of the reasons we love the Montavilla neighborhood so much. Outstanding baked goods. Fantastic brunch / breakfast and delicious coffee. Best cronut I've ever had and their cardamom carrot loaf is my all time favorite. Really easy place to walk or bike to sit, eat and relax. Everyone is super friendly and the staff gives great recommendations if you aren't sure what to get. Kids love their food too and they have indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
I drive all the way from Vancouver at least on one of my days off from work; that's how good Hungry Heart is! The coffee is always Consistent, what ever roast of Stump Town they use; it's good. I have ongoing affair with all the vegan treats @ Hungry Heart . Sweet but not too sweet. Which is not able; As I've had some other bakery items at other places and some tend to be so overly sweet; that I can not continue eating them. Not the case at Hungry Heart. They bake all of the bakery goodies right there @ Hungry Heart. And do it with passion. When you walk in and place your order. You'll see just behind the Till. All of the delicious food and pastries being made fresh. The seating area is very limited. They do have a couple of picnic table seatting in front. Also I wish they would have some kind of whole grain vegan bakery item. Like perhaps a whole grain vegan cinnamon roll or whole grain vegan bran muffin. An extra point if organic. :) Oh before I forget every body that works here is pleasant and friendly. I'm always greeted warmly and with a smile. It really does make a difference. You feel like you matter, and it demonstrates that the employees are happy. Which makes the customers happy. Which is a good thing. Parking is extremely limited. So if you plan on coming here plan on possibley parking a ways away and walking . Because it's only street parking, which at least every time I've been there is almost always difficult to find a spot. Another great thing about Hungry Heart is it's owned by LGBT That gives them 10 stars YES. . Thank You. Hungry Heart, Love you guys.. so follow your heart on over to Hungry Heart.

Yelp
Just ordered brunch from here and everything was delicious. I had the hazelnut crusted French toast which was hands down one of the best French toasts I've had. I also thoroughly enjoyed the biscuit with poblano gravy. We ordered one of the seasonal pies and it's HUGE! Well be saving it for later.

Yelp
This is a cool bakery with alternative milk choices and some sugar free flavors. My latte was perfect. They have few tables inside and a couple outside do be prepared to wait. Because the are so busy, customer service is a hit or miss. The vegan cinnamon swirl was dry and not good. This place has potential, so I will give them another chance. This is not a sit down long and study kind of place, but if you are looking fur a quick in and out snack place, it might work for you (if they are not busy).

Yelp
Wow, I've never waiting this long for what is essentially a toasted bagel and cream cheese. I've been waiting for like 20 minutes. Not coming back here.

Yelp
I identify as a female Pit/Rhodesian Ridgeback, and I am here to "shed" light on what's "dog friendly" and what isn't. 5/10 dog "friendly" rating. My human loves it here, but she always seems a little confused as to why there is only one friendly human working there. She likes their chai, mini cupcakes, and the Farmer John croissant sandwich. I like that sandwich too, when my human is cool and slips me some egg yolk. My human does wish they had more alternative milks other than almond and coconut. I don't mind it here when the sun is out and when non paying customers aren't hogging the outdoor picnic tables so that my human can be considerate and avoid bringing me inside (although they were okay with it the only time my humans asked to bring me inside). One time a lady who didn't buy anything took up two tables to eat her farmers market snap peas with her two very angry poodles who tried to eat me. Not my fault y'all are poodles. My hungry human couldn't leave me outside to buy her coffee and lunch because I wasn't safe.

Yelp
Very good strong black coffee. I also ordered the vegan veggie breakfast sandwich. It hit the spot! Perfect ratio of filling to bread. I'll be back. No doubt about it. The only thing I wish they offered was more vegan options, but that's just personal preference. Otherwise, this place is worth the visit!

Yelp
Good food. Staff is nice, only problem is it takes forever to get your food. A farmer Jon takes 30 minutes to get

Yelp
My husband and I go here every weekend for brunch. The staff are great and food is tasty! Love that we can bring our pup with us. There's a nice covered outdoor area when the weather is nice enough. Definitely recommend! Like that they always have at least one gf pastry option.
