"With its striking combination of Brutalist and classic architecture, high ceilings, and copious natural light, the Hunter Museum itself is a work of art. It’s inspiring but not pretentious, which makes up two thirds of our qualifications for a world-class art museum. And, since the last qualifier is ace exhibits, the Hunter’s three for three. Need an even more relaxing experience? Check out the Hunter’s occasional yoga sessions on the bluff overlooking the river. It’s every bit as beautiful as it sounds." - Whiteboard

"American Art on the Tennessee River Chattanooga's Hunter Museum of American Art is set against a cliff overlooking the Tennessee River. If the view doesn't draw you in, it will be the collection of American art from Winslow Homer to Andy Warhol. The museum is made up of a historic mansion, pictured above, a modern 1970s structure and a sleek contemporary building that looks like at any moment it could plummet into the water. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and free on the first Sunday of every month."

Google
What a nice gem to have in this city. The artwork was exactly the eye candy that I needed. Had a mix of blown glass (traveling exhibit), fine art, contemporary, pencil, and a little surrealism. Fun nice stroll through there.

Google
This place was awesome. We visited while the deco art glass was there and so many beautiful pieces! Love the kids room they took enjoyed everything!!

Google
Nice smaller museum. Beutiful views of the river. Maybe a bit pricey for what you get.

Google
I was very impressed with this art museum, very diverse in exhibits and pieces and lots of rich history throughout the entire museum. The special exhibit was closed when I went so I’ll have to go back to check it out!

Google
What a fantastic museum! I drive from Kennesaw to go visit, it's well worth it. American art is not rare, it's just not often mentioned in popular media. I would rank it higher than The High in ATL and more worth the drive. BTW, Chattanooga has exploded with a building boom, the area is managed better than ATL, it's safer, cleaner, a bit more fun, and the people tend to run more personable and real.

Very nice museum. Great displays of diverse art and interactive. Something cool to do after walking the walnut bridge.

Google
Hunter Museum is a wonderful gallery for families. There's art for all ages to enjoy. There is also an education room where they display art from local schools. My granddaughter had a drawing on display.

Ben B.

Yelp
Great place with generally beautiful art also had my art featured there a few months back so that was cool 5/5 stars would recommend

Kaile N.

Yelp
Beautiful museum and a lovely location. Didn't love the graffiti display. Seemed like it was trying too hard to be shocking with nudity and sacrilege. Over all, the museum was a pretty good mix of the impressive and the uninspired.

Yelp
I cannot comment on actually visiting inside the Hunter Museum as each time we've visited the area, we've had our little dog with us. The outside grounds, however, have been what we've enjoyed. We appreciate the outside works of statue art on display as well as the clean and maintained grounds. There's lovely shaded areas with benches to sit and a couple of tables to rest or picnic at. The overlook terrace with its river views is breathtaking too! We've visited both on weekends and weekdays, and both times have been enjoyable despite being slightly busy. Grounds keepers have been friendly, too. Stopping their work or sweeping for a moment to give us a friendly wave or a smile when they see us. This has been a wonderful stop whenever we're in town and have our little dog out walking with us. Definitely stop by!

Yelp
As a native I tend to only visit HMoAA when a collection is going on that looks interesting, but decided to take a trip after coffee in the art district. The museum looks massive, but between the hidden rooms, offices, etc the actually on exhibit pieces are small. The museum is between three buildings, the old mansion, the newer entrance hall and then the most recent edition near the parking lot. There is definitely enough to look at to kill an hour or two, but not sure it's worth the $15pp unless a special collection is on site. There was one piece I was looking forward to seeing, but unfortunately it was off exhibit and no one could tell me when it would be back out.

Larry T G.

Yelp
Very fancy in the inside. When we went it looked like a wedding or something was taking place. Wide variety of artwork and interactives. A little pricey but I enjoyed myself.

Linda I.

Yelp
Cool local museum. It is free on Thursdays after 4 PM. Plan at least a couple hours to look at everything Hunter Museum has. There are free parking in the area that is walking distance to the museum.

Kate P.

Yelp
Loved this museum! We ducked in here to escape a thunderstorm one afternoon and it was the best choice. Very broad collection of American art, from the colonies to modern-day. Gorgeous river views, too! Definitely recommend.

Julie G.

Yelp
Nice little museum. They have a free admission evening on the first Thursday of each month from 4 - 8 pm.

Mauricio J.

Yelp
Definitely worth a visit! This is one great little museum with a carefully chosen art collection presented in a very attractive way, not excessively crowded at all, so it makes for a wonderful afternoon getaway.

Dale G.

Yelp
Wide range of artistic works. Loved the different rooms and choices. Location view of the river was beautiful. Only 4 stars. You must get the floors fixed in the Mansion section. Omg the squeaking was so annoying and disturbing. It ruined the experience for me.

Yelp
Chattanooga has such a beautiful Museum of Art. It's almost like there are 3 museums because there are 3 district galleries all attached making up the Hunter. Each built at different times and each holding art that goes with that theming, the 3 buildings really offer art for everyone. In addition to the permanent collections, they also offer touring exhibits. The membership really gives you the chance to visit and spend just a few minutes or an entire day. Every time I visit, I find something new and I love it! Our membership allows us to bring guests too. I love showing off the Hunter Museum of Art. PS- don't forget to stop by the gift shop! Really great art based gifts and they have an Artist! An art vending machine. It's super cool! The gift shop is open to the public and die not require a membership but I'd you live in this area, you should treat yourself to a membership!

Jill S.

Yelp
Very nice collection of American art and history of the family/mansion. Mainly paintings, but also some sculptures, photographs, glassware. Beautiful view of river.

Sally T.

Yelp
Outstanding Museum. There are so many wonderful things to do and see here. The Chihuly vases are beautiful.

Danielle S.

Yelp
Really kind staff and good layout for browsing. Ranges from modern art and architecture to older, classic art/architecture. Bought a day pass but by the end of the visit bumped up to an annual pass since it pays off in just two visits!

Benjamin B.

Yelp
If I lived nearer to Chattanooga, my family would have a membership to this fantastic institution. A visit here includes great views of the beautiful Tennessee River, worth the price of air-conditioned comfort, alone.

Allison T.

Yelp
A must see in Chattanooga! I was impressed with how unique and diverse this museum was- it truly meshes art from various centuries! The history of the art museum itself and how it came to be was very interesting and it was cool to see how Chattanooga has evolved as a city through artwork! Their impressionist paintings were breathtaking and they have a very interesting modern art section as well! It's located in a wonderful spot of Chattanooga as well, just a quick walk from Remebrants and Tony's Pasta!

Charles S.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed the Hunter Museum. The location is spectacular, on a high bluff overlooking the Tennessee River. The collection in the original mansion was pretty boring with the building more interesting than the art. The new wing is great with work by many artists I know, and more by many whose work I was not familiar with. I love it when regional museums surprise and delight. Bravo Chattanooga. Bravo Hunter Museum.

Peavey L.

Yelp
This was extremely underwhelming museum. The best part was the A/C. The mansion felt unkept. From the filthy carpet, dingy walls, oddly placed art and poor lighting angles. The modern portion of the museum house's the glass art, which my favorite collection. However, again with the poor lighting. The Enchanted themed portion was well curated. Leaving me with a semi pleasant impression...bringing up, the otherwise 2 star experience to a 3 star experience.

Teresa F.

Yelp
A gem of a museum. Perfect size for exploring for an hour or two. Great combination of known and new artists and contemporary and modern styles. Modern and historic architecture. And fantastic, can't be beat views of the city. On our visit most of the interactive stuff was shut down due to Covid but I imagine that is great usually with kids. Doing a wonderful job keeping it timed entranced and temperatures checked. Some galleries only one family at a time. Female artists focus for 100 year celebration was nice too. Loved it.

Christian S.

Yelp
Such a gem in the city offering contemporary and modern art from all over. order your tickets ahead of time online to avoid potentially waiting in long lines. This museum has sculptures, drawings, paintings, small break out and hang out rooms over viewing the city skyline. this month, there was a special exhibit about ballet and dance photography which was absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend checking out that exhibit and the rest of the amazing museum and all of the beautiful art there.

Sean C J.

Yelp
Great place! Beautiful art! Beautiful garden! Fantastic exhibitions! Went to the Fantasy Artwork exhibit and the Collecting comics panel which was led by the folks from Infinity Flux Comics (in Hixson Tn) and hosted by Hunter Museum, it was very insightful and educational.

Jay S.

Yelp
There are two buildings -one that is historic and one that is modern. The interiors of both are large, clean, well arranged. The artwork is easy to view and well displayed. For a small museum, this one has some interesting pieces, from Lamar Dodd to Lichtenstein. The view of the city and the river from the outdoor back balcony is nice, and there are interesting sculptures both on the balcony and outside the front entrance. Parking is adequate and free. The museum is located in the art district -worth a walk or drive to see other sculptures. The entrance fee is reasonable.

Amy H.

Yelp
Always a wonderful place to visit. Truly enjoy this place. Like the different exhibits that come to the museum along with the more traditional artwork displayed.

Sara L.

Yelp
I grew up going to the Hunter Museum because my Dad was an artist and art professor. I remember first climbing the crickety stairs of the Hunter Mansion that houses much earlier century artwork. The newer part of the museum that was built houses some of my Dad's artwork as well as many of his friends'. During "normal" times, there is a monthly free night open to the public to explore the permanent art collections here. There are also new exhibitions opening up every season and various types of events. Currently though, you can explore exhibits through a virtual museum experience, programs, lectures, concerts, etc. on YouTube and various art projects posted on the museum website that can be somewhat easily experienced using supplies from your home. There's also a photography tour linked to the museum site, Southbound. Until the doors can open again, there's a way to still experience the museum magic a bit.

Wade C.

Yelp
It is beautiful, blending old with new, enjoying the space as much as the art is very agreeable to a satisfying visit. Quite a diverse range of art, some of the paintings are overwhelming in size, just amazing creations as are some of the glass art featured. The location is almost European, perched high on the cliff overlooking the river's edge in the heart of downtown. Great experience.

Matt P.

Yelp
Any time I visit a new city, I always check out the local art museum. So on a visit to Chattanooga, I knew I needed to visit the Hunter Museum of American Art. I stopped by with a friend on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't busy and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. No matter what kind of art you're into, you can find something to spark your interest and curiosity at the Hunter Museum. I particularly enjoyed the late 1800s oil paintings and the mix of modern pieces by Willem de Kooning and Roy Lichtenstein. The Hunter is small enough that you can see everything in a few hours, unlike more massive museums in Chicago or NYC. Make sure you go upstairs and out onto the outer patio area, there are amazing views of the Walnut Street Bridge over the Tennessee River. If you're a student, bring your ID and you can receive a decreased entry fee. I really enjoyed my time at the Hunter and would recommend it to visitors and Chattanoogans alike.

Terri C.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and a variety of mediums and periods make this an enjoyable place to visit. It's in a great location close to downtown. If I lived closer I'd get a membership so I could visit more.

Lisa B.

Yelp
We enjoyed 2.5 hours there today. The staff was very helpful & informative. A nice variety of artwork for a smaller museum.

Donnelly J.

Yelp
I've been to this museum a couple of times now. They have a large permanent collection of artwork on the main floor and pieces from the 1800s in the mansion. In a display room upstairs, they typically have a collection that's a temporary exhibit. There's such an diverse collection of artwork that you'll find at least a few pieces that you'd like. It's cool seeing the different mediums used - photos, paint, glass, etc. I enjoyed some of the interactive art areas they have - can help keep things interesting for your little ones or young at heart.

Patrick C.

Yelp
Horrible experience and will never visit again. Masks being required is such nonsense. Big waste of money and time

Steven L.

Yelp
I describe this as peaceful quite museum yet entertaining. Someone actually lived in this mansion at one time. His last name was Hunter of course. He had something to do with coke and is how he made a living. It only took me about an hour to completely go through the museum. It was very interesting. In one room they had a woman sitting down at a desk that is very realistic but is actually a oil painting statue or something like that on this visit. The museum changes every so often. The Mansion has 3 stories but tourists can only see the first two stories. Like all mansions and two stories, the bedrooms were up stairs. The bedrooms have been converted into separate art rooms if you will. It looks no longer like a big house that someone lived in once.

Aaron S.

Yelp
The building in which art is contained can be beautiful, the art within the building can be beautiful, but when you have both of these elements and add to them a picturesque location and scenery...you have something magical. And magic is what you have in this Museum. First, it residues on the side of the bluff overlooking the Tennessee. You can see it for miles, including across the river. One of the best pictures of it can be taken while on the Walking Bridge. If you happened to be in that part of downtown, there is a semi-clear bridge you can cross to get to the Museum. Before you even walk in, be sure to take in the outside, the mansion and modern building, and the view from bluff. Once inside, plan for the better part of your day to be handed over. There is so much to take in and you find yourself walking slowly, for fear you might miss something. Andy Warhol was one of the many artists on display on one of my visits. I couldn't believe such fine art was tucked away in this corner of the city. But they do an amazing of curation so I recommend keeping a eye out for their events and exhibits. Chattanooga has many gems in its downtown, but this is a crowning jewel. *Insider's Tip -Park in the Bluff View Art District. It is free parking plus you know you want a latte or a tart for the short walk. This will also allow you to see all of the outside art. -I don't have a reason to do this, but I wish I did. You can rent a space here! Parties, wedding receptions, whatever. I would just do it for the view and a casual evening.

Alexis B.

Yelp
We spent a few days in Chattanooga recently, and the Hunter Museum of American Art was one of our stops while there! While it was interesting, it is a small (and expensive) museum to visit. Tickets are $15/adult, which I felt was quite high given the size of the museum. The museum spans two buildings (one modern and one small), but is still one of the smaller art museums I've visited. If I lived in Chattanooga, I think I would only visit the museum if they had a great exhibition opening (because the permanent collection is quite small and didn't have any pieces I'd be willing to pay again to see). Not a horrible stop on our trip, but it didn't impress me overall.

Meredith R.

Yelp
What impressed me about the museum are the artists represented: most of whom I wasn't familiar with. So many lovely works in a fabulous setting: the modern wing vs art in the mansion. (The structure of the original building interested me more than the 19th century portraits it housed.) Admission is $15 per person with a dollar discount for seniors, AAA or military. A docent mentioned that there is plenty more in storage than what's displayed, and that even the permanent collection periodically changes. The museum is big enough to keep one's interest, but not so large (like NY's Met) to become overwhelming. I will be back! And oh - by the way - notice the spectacular views from the museum's picture windows.

Don S.

Yelp
I was here for a wedding and the facility was beautiful. Sitting in the the audience looking over the Tennessee river and watching the ceremony was very special.

Tono M.

Yelp
Great place to visit on a rainy day or really any day. We had family visiting and the weather was rainy and cold so we headed over to the museum. The place wasn't too busy. The exhibits were interesting and you could get a little walking in too as you stroll through the new building and into the mansion. The staff was pleasant and informative. There was a coat check which was self serve. A fun learning experience.

Sarah F.

Yelp
Was fairly disappointed in this museum. Based on the descriptions I read, I was expecting a gracious mansion with a well-curated collection of historic American art. Not so. First, there was a lot of modern and abstract art here, way more than I expected. I didn't care for any of it, but that's a personal taste issue. Next, parts of the museum were under renovation, which they mentioned when I bought my ticket, but only the fact that a couple galleries were closed. What they definitely did not mention was that the extremely noisy construction work was going on while the museum was open and made being in the mansion part quite unpleasant. The reverent hush of a museum is an integral part of the experience and that was utterly shattered. Those types of repairs should only be made while the museum is closed. At the very least, don't charge full price admission! I had hoped for period furnishings in the mansion portion and more on local history and the time period in which it was used as a residence, but there's barely anything. A huge miss in my opinion. Admission is $15, which for the size and quality of the museum seemed high to me, even with everything open. At least parking (warning: small lot!) is free if you can find a space.

Amy L.

Yelp
Definitely worth going! Beautiful art work, exhibit, history. I will definitely be back!

Joseph J.

Yelp
This was a very neat museum, I was unsure if I liked the aesthetic initially, with the modern building attached to a classical, gorgeous mansion, but in person I thought it worked nicely and really was a neat feature for the Chattanooga riverfront. The museum itself I would call medium sized. There are a whole bunch of works to see, and it is all (or mostly) American art. There is also lots of fun activities for children inside the museum, and the exhibits range from mostly the 1900's to some more modern stuff towards the end of the exhibit on the first floor. I really liked this museum and would recommend it to anyone interested in American art.

M H.

Yelp
Went for the Wayne White exhibit 'Thrill After Thrill: 30 Years of Wayne White' (which was AWESOME!!!!) but also really enjoyed the rest of the museum and the Hunter Mansion. Loved that photos (without flash) were ENCOURAGED in the Wayne White exhibit so I'm sharing tons of them! The architecture of the museum is absolutely amazing - would be a great venue for any shi-shi event - and truly enjoyed being able to go through the 1904 mansion with its beautiful wood work, furniture, and fireplaces. Staff was super friendly - I had seen a Wayne White Family Guide (a children's fun book) at Wayne-o-Rama and really wanted one for my collection and the staff tracked one down in the basement - so nice :) The grounds and outdoor sculptures are beautiful and def go out on 1 of the outdoor patios for an amazing view of the Tennessee River and Chattanooga. Definitely worth $15 - highly recommend!

Lisa H.

Yelp
Sheepishly, I must admit that the Hunter Museum of American Art was a backup destination for us (Ruby Falls was flooded due to a downpour) but it ended up being one of our favorite spots. The museum consists of a modern section attached to an older section, a historical mansion. There was more art that you could shake a paintbrush at. Something for everyone, from glass to founding fathers. I particularly enjoyed the Gajin Fujita exhibit, reminded me of Kill Bill. It's there until June 7th, 2015. Google Maps gave us bad directions but we got to Hunter eventually. Just be sure to get on High Street. Even though it was a weekend, the museum wasn't too crowded. The gift shop was fun to browse. Don't miss the sculpture garden, glass bridge, or views from the bluff. You can also walk across the blue Walnut Street bridge too. After we had our fill of absorbing art, we strolled over to Tony's Pasta Shop & Trattoria for some Italian food. A fantastic afternoon in Chattanooga!

Matthew S.

Yelp
This is a beautiful place. It has new and old architecture. The buildingS have a winding maze that includes part of the original building that dates back to the early 1900's. The American art is beautiful and They offer a rotating exhibition that usually changes every 45-90 days. The phone number has a recording of all the details you might want to know including 1 free entry a month, usually on a Thursday, it does exclude the special exhibits. The gift shop is beautiful and filled with everything from toddler toys to hand made souvenirs fit for any taste. The museum is always clean and has docents to help guide you and educate you if you ask. I advise you to research the area (art district) because there are many options for food and outdoor activities including art.

Emma W.

Yelp
Not a huge museum, but a good way to spend some time. The architecture is awesome though. The interior is something to marvel at and the exterior, depending on the angle, there is always something that you've never noticed before. The selection of art has a little bit of everything. There is a main building and a mansion. Both are fun to walk around. The mansion has more furniture, and traditional art. Its fun. They do give docent led tours, so check the times. First Sundays are free... first sunday of the month. They also have concerts during the summer during the week. There seems to always something going on... Budget an hour at minimum...

Jessica N.

Yelp
Very unique art museum with a wonderful back story. The architecture is a unique blend of the original classic style home conjunction to the newer wing of the museum which was built in a sleek modern style. The energy in this museum is unique. Since the original wing was a home/mansion you can walk through the museum and gather a sense of what life for the original owners of the home must have felt like. The building is a work of art in and of itself. Love the exhibits. There is always a wonderful rotation of new exhibits to explore through out the year. There is even a kit for young children which helps them learn and makes the experience very hands on for the little ones.

Heather B.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time at the Hunter Museum, and that's saying something since one of our party hates art museums! I love the architecture in the new part, all the angles, all the windows, all the riveted metal plates.I really like the space and the amazing location. It's on a high bluff over the river, overlooking the city of Chattanooga mountains all around. The views are amazing and it's nice to be able to go out on the terrace in so many different places. The permanent collection in the modern section seems a little random, but I liked that. There was a lot of variety. Perhaps this is what made it feel unpretentious and much more welcoming and accessible than most art museums. The older building is a lovely old mansion with classical landscapes and older art. I didn't expect anyone in our party to like this part, but my daughters enjoyed it very much. There are some nice landscapes. Unlike most museums, there are many places to sit and look at art books, often with a beautiful view from one of the many windows. There was one room that had an activity: looking at transparencies of landscape photos on a light box and then drawing one on a postcard. This inspired my art-museum-hating daughter and her "Intimidation Mountain", done in pencil in 2 minutes while standing in the next room, is up on the bulletin board as I write this. The gift shop was small, but really cool. It's worth a stop on its own. And if you're a student, for the price of admission ($15), you can also get a membership, which will get you a discount at other museums as well. The area around the museum is lovely, with cafes and restaurants that look a little European. You can walk downtown to the aquarium and many restaurants or across the pedestrian bridge for cute shops and restaurants or along the river walk. It's an amazing location. The Hunter Museum has a small parking lot which had ample parking for a weekday. Chattanooga and the Hunter Museum are well worth a visit!

Nicky M.

Yelp
The Hunter museum is in a beautiful location in the Bluff view art district. This is a lovely date location. Always check to see the visiting exhibitions. It is constantly changing. The tickets are cheap.

Asia A.

Yelp
The exhibits here are extra special, and the views are super bomb, but I was surprised to see the lack of art for $15 per person. Most of the art was pretty antiquated, minus the exhibit and first floor. World I come back? Probably for an event, but not necessarily just to browse.

Nickole T.

Yelp
It's got nice exhibits and events that change often so there is new stuff to see. It's extremely quiet and kids I've encountered were well behaved. The first Sunday of every month is FREE! until 2pm

Terri T.

Yelp
This is a great museum of American art. If you are visiting Chattanooga and don't visit, you are going yourself a disservice. Perched atop a hill on the riverside, the first thing you notice is how stunning the building itself is. The museum is adjoining buildings of the old Hunter mansion and an ultra modern building that houses the exhibits. You are greeted by several outdoor sculptures as you make your way to the museum entrance. There are outdoor decks that you really should check out that offer a great vantage point to view the area. The ehhibits range from early colonial art to modern art to sculpture to glassworks (we were especially impressed by the glass) to photography (both new and old). It is set up to meander through slowly and enjoy everything. A truly magnificent collection of art. Once through the art exhibits in the modern building we went through the manison for even more beatiful exhibits. It's a good look back at an time past in Chattanooga. I'd really love to visit this museum again someday.
