Where to Make a Pit Stop on the Way to the Maryland-Delaware Shore | Eater DC

"Looking for a bushel of crabs to-go? Hunters Crabs in Grasonville (directly off U.S. 50 East) has reasonably priced options, plus crab cakes packed on ice to cook later. This is a value-driven pit stop if you want to bring a crab feast to the beach." - Tim Ebner

Google
The food here was really good our family had an amazing experience!! The place was clean, it’s not really a restaurant but they gave us a neat table and all the tools to crack open the crabs which was fun. The seasoning was delicious and if we had the chance to revisit we would definitely☺️ The people here were real nice gave us recommendations on other places, short talk but I could tell they were nice people👍 Thank you so much👏

I saw someone post about Hunter's Seafood on Sunday and decided I'd give them a try. Called my order in, phenomenal prices, great crabs- full and very tasty, corn was on point. I had to wait about 15 minutes but it was well worth the wait. I will definitely be going back to get more crabs and try some of the other items on their menu.

Absolutely loved our stop at Hunter Seafood & Market! We were just passing through on the way back from DC when my son asked for crab—and wow, did they deliver. We walked away with a bag of perfectly boiled crabs and a full tutorial from the super kind owner right there on the patio. Phenomenal crab, amazing hospitality, and such a gem of a spot. So glad places like this exist—we’ll definitely be back!

I found this market on Google while spending the weekend in Kent & Narrows. I wanted to take home some fresh fish, shrimp, and crab cakes. I'm glad I stopped by. The crab cakes were worth the price, they are a generous size and heavy. They are all crab meat with little or no filler. The shrimp salad is amazing and also worth every penny! I can't wait to eat my fish and shrimp...Lol. This market has chicken wings, cheese steaks, crabs, soups, and everything you need to throw a crab feast party. They also can cook your crabs for you and have an outdoor eating area to enjoy them. They have a friendly staff who doesn't mind answering any questions you may have.

We were hoping for good crabs and we got GREAT crabs! Not living in MD crabs are a once in a long while treat and the bushel we got from Hunters were the best any of us could remember. Thanks for an awesome day.

Google
We ordered two dozen medium crabs and they were amazing. The staff was very friendly and prices were good. I'm glad we found this place!

Google
Worst wings ever! I called ahead & drove 30 minutes to get my order then they forgot to start my order until I arrived.. The wings were the slimiest, meatless, vein filled, mushiest excuse for wings I ever tasted! They were inedible & we had to pitch them. They were definitely undercooked (but somehow pre-seared?). Also they gave my daughter the wrong sauce which was so spicy it was inedible even if the wings would’ve been thoroughly cooked. Never again! Stick to crabs..

Yelp
Seafood is always great!! The Oysters are fresh as can be. The staff is very knowledgeable and always happy to help. Their recent renovation only added to this great seafood place!! Travis and Joe are highly recommend

Yelp
The freshest, fattest, crabs, I've had in this area. At other places I typically order extra large or jumbo. Larges at Hunter had more meat than I've had in extra large or jumbos from otheres.

Yelp
Steam platters are excellent. Got the scallops and crab legs with corn and potatoes. Highly recommend

Yelp
Love this place but yesterday treated ourselves to 1 1/2 dozen of large crabs. And they were not large and most of them measured 5" to 5 1/4". When I called to complain they said that they don't measure every crab. When asked what I wanted I said 18 large crabs, what I paid for! They didn't offer anything and said "i hope you'll try us again!" Really?

Yelp
Based on the quote of $55.00 for two dozen #1 crabs (a price I clarified THREE times before ending my call), I placed on order. When I arrived I was told the price was $80.00 and that the person who quoted me "misspoke." I guess "misspoke" is a way of defining "bait & switch" pricing. I was also asked in a gruff and accusatory manner if I "had a problem" with the price. Only half of the crabs were #1 size. Bad business on multitude of levels. It would appear I'm not the only person who was less than thrilled with this establishment.

Yelp
I have lived on Kent Island for 16 years now and I know how very competitive it is for selling top notch crabs and over the years Hunters has been one of the most reasonable priced and honest people,.their reputation has always been fairly outstanding.,thats why it is rather painful to leave this bad review,.what happened?? I ordered a dizen and a half of "so-called" #1's (6-1/2 inch or bigger). On the phone when i was ordering I made sure with the guy that there were not any #2's (mediums 5-1/2-6 inch) mixed in, which some places will do, usually just a couple which are near the bottom of the bag,.believe me,.I know all the sneaky things some places will do,.but anyway,.he assured me they were all 6-1/2 inch crabs. Well to our disappointment my guest and I right away after sitting down and opening the bag thought the order was wrong,.they must have given us somebody else's medium order,.well we were all set up to eat and I wasnt gonna drive the half hour back there,.so not to be anal, we measured each one before we ate it,.the results were very disapointing,.only 3 of the 18 were true #1's,.in which one was complete mush and was discarded immediately,.5 of the 18 were 6 to 6-1/2. 8 of them were true #2's at 5-1/2 to 6 and 2 of them were even under 5-1/2 !! There is nothing that bothers me more than dishonesty when purchasing crabs because you are paying good money to get what you expect. By the way there was another mushy unedible crab in there also. Hunters was NEVER like this before!,. In talking to people in the know in the island, I was told that it is new ownership & management and they had taken a nose dive,.i did notice that the place looked a little different and it was a young man and women serving me that i dont remember seeing,.you would think that being new owners of a long respected establishment would want to make a positive mark in a very competitive area for crabs,.I just hope this review is seen by them and they make the changes asap,.but just be aware they have changed and they evudently are just eyeballing their crabs and not achieving the standard size and expectation,.also,.mushy crabs are totally unacceptable!,.from now on I am going just another 2 miles east on route 18 to The Cranky Crab,.they may be $10 more per dozen,.but they are ALWAYS honest and ALWAYS good

Yelp
Drove from Northern VA to this place and I ordered a buschel of large crabs and half of the full buschel was rotten, many was shells. I paid $300 and literally a waste. I don't recommend this place if you want good heavy large crabs.

Yelp
Recommended by our host Scott on our trip in Kent Island. Had a nice phone call with the lady at the front who told me the market price and explained how ordering steamed crabs works. She said they've been in business for three generations, and to trust them. Ordered two dozen number 1 sized crabs and they smelled heavenly in the car. They were also heavy and came with low sodium salad to balance out the heavy seasoning. Took a family of four 3 hours to eat them because there was so much crab. Would highly recommend Hunter's Crabs to anyone in the area. No wonder people say they travel hours to get crabs from here.

Yelp
Absolutely first class seafood. Everything is genuinely fresh, the steamed shrimp and crabs are as good (if not better) as any I have had anywhere in the world. Their soft shell crab is superlative. The fish is local and caught that day. The stock arrives in multiple batches through the day as it comes off the boats, so ask what the freshest is and it really will be. Recommended without reservations.

Yelp
This is the locals go to place for crabs, oysters, salmon, PEI mussels and other seafood. Ask about the seafood potpie--awesome.

Yelp
Purchased a bushel of crabs on Memorial Day Weekend. At $240 for a bushel of number #1 size, half a dozen were dead and a majority of them were #2's. We were 10 minutes from Hunter's and we cleaned and steamed them right away. I would never purchase from them again

Karen W.

Yelp
Love their salmon, shrimp and shrimp salad. Really, the shrimp salad is addicting.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen #1 and was told they would steam them and be ready in 20 minutes. I got there in 10 minutes and the crabs were cold so I know they weren't freshly steamed. If they claim these were #1 then I would hate to see their #2s. These were all very small and one or two were barely legal. A few were mushy and not edible. Won't be going back.

Yelp
We purchased a bushel of #1 male crabs and 1/2 bushel Honeycut oysters on 11/16/19. The crabs were the best crabs I have had this year..sweet and full! I took them to a friends house in Baltimore and everyone raved about the crabs and oysters!

Yelp
My family ordered 18 jumbo crabs and two pounds of large spiced shrimp. The crabs were big, fat and steamed to perfection. The shrimp were perfect also. Best crabs I've had in years. I'll be back for sure! Cheaper then eating and worth every penny.

Yelp
I bought oysters on the half shell. When I got them home they smelled bad and after tasting one I threw them away.. When I informed them of the fact they became very defensive and remarked that it was impossible and inferred that I was just trying to get my money back. I told themthat I did not want my money back. They could have cared less.

Yelp
Best crabs around! Heavy, not wet and awesome price. Take out only, but call in advance and they will have your food ready. We'll be back!

Yelp
Proverbial crab shack by the side of the road. 30 year plus family business with fresh everything Seafood.

Yelp
Originally went there for their soft crabs. $5.00ea. for live crabs no matter what size they have that day. Have bought them there 3 times not and they were nice size two of the three times. Thought I would give their steamed crabs a shot and for $85.00 for a half bushel of #1s I figured I couldn't go wrong so I ordered a half a bushel of "#1s" last weekend. I ended up getting a half bushel of mixed crabs with the bigger crabs being on the top of the box. As I started taking the crabs out I knew I had made a mistake ordering them form here. Very light, mixed sizes and tasted like they had been shipped in from VA. Definitely not local crabs. Will continue to buy soft crabs here but wont get burnt on their steamed crabs again.

Yelp
First time going to Hunter's was a few days ago to order 8 lbs of jumbo shrimp to be cooked, peeled and deveined and ready mid-morn Sat. They were wonderful. All our guests commented how great the shrimp was.

Yelp
Stumbled onto Hunters Seafood this weekend and I am glad I did. The #1 crabs were absolutely amazing. Purchased a 1/2 bushel for a family get together and the crabs were a big hit, not a bad crab in the bunch. The service was fast and the people very friendly and helpful. I live in Montgomery County and I normally get my crabs from the Wharf in DC (not anymore). I will make the trip (2+ hours) to Hunters Seafood from now on.
