Hunting Island State Park is frequently recommended by travel experts—Travel + Leisure calls it one of the Southeast’s best-kept secrets for nature lovers. Just under three hours from Columbia, this protected barrier island is run by the state and prized for its wild, undeveloped beaches, historic lighthouse, and miles of maritime forest trails. There are no chain hotels or tourist traps here—just a beachside campground, a nature center, and a vibrant local ecosystem. The park’s commitment to conservation and local stewardship makes it a favorite for families and adventurers alike.

Best beach and one of the main reasons I moved to Beaufort SC!! Turtle patrol gets me on the beach once a week at sunrise. My phone storage album is filled with photos just like these. It is a magical place in the morning. There is a campground as well as a beach with a lifeguard. Picnic areas and dog friendly too.

Tent camped here for two nights. Beautiful quiet campground with a bath house not too far. The tent sites had gravel boxes to pitch your tent on and the tall palmetto trees provided a nice vibe and some shade. Keep any food in your car/camper overnight! Had a persistent raccoon hanging around.

Hunting island is such a special place, we visited last year for the first time and just came back from our second trip, and are already planning a return trip next year. Miles of beautiful trails in the woods, quiet beaches that are wide and sandy, with tons of shells to sift through to find sand dollars or shark’s teeth. The campground is clean and quiet and has a variety of types of sites. You could easily spend 3 days here relaxing, doing beach walks, and exploring the trails in the woods. We’ve been lucky and spotted eagles each time we’ve visited!

I had been wanting to come here for five years. There was quite a few people there, but it wasn’t like being on one of the many crowded touristy beaches, it was more locals and they were all really nice and friendly. Didn’t find any sharks teeth this time, but I’m hopeful for next trip.

Highly recommend visiting if you want to see a beautiful & natural park. The beach is fabulous & excellent for shelling - the Park Ranger told us that’s the correct term for picking up seashells - and you can take them home! Plenty of shore birds & plenty of room to enjoy the deep & wide beach. There are several trails to explore the fauna & get some exercise. The Lagoon is an idyllic spot for a picnic. We were here in late March & there weren’t a lot of visitors giving us lots of room on the beach and mostly vacant trails. There’s a cool Lighthouse with outbuildings but it is closed (Mar 2025) for renovation. Wonderful natural park with no nearby development. Check it out!

Great way to spend the day and a photographers dream. Uncrowded beaches, kayaking, walking trails. Definitely plan a visit when in the Lowcountry! You can bring your dog too👍

This is a beautiful park. My only complaint is there is no walkway to the women's bathhouse at the campground. So after you get all clean you have to trudge thru soft sand and get all dirty again.

Really nice campground with spacious sites with plenty of privacy. We have a small trail to the beach. Beach is beautiful and dog friendly. Took a couple of the trails and the views were beautiful. Deadwood beach was a bit spooky because of the fog.
