Went here to do some volunteer work which consisted of sorting frozen meat into boxes which would later be distributed to the less fortunate. We were instructed to sort anything as long as its expiration date was within a year and there was no physically apparent damage (open packaging, visible mold, etc.) So anything from as long ago as June, 2013 was still considered a-ok. It was afterall, frozen.
I enjoyed the work and I love helping out my community but then I also kinda feel bad for knowing that the homeless might have consequences from eating some of the stuff we sorted for them. Its June and most of the meat had already expired in November. A lot of it appeared to be Thanksgiving donations.
As someone who has been poor enough to have waited on free cheese lines back in the 80s, I know what it is to be hungry and to rely on handouts. I also know how it feels when those handouts are of inferior quality & make you sick so I have mixed feelings.
All in all, I am happy to have been a part of the experience and to have helped & learned so much.
