Yelp
The BEST Vietnamese food in Portland! It took me a whole year to find this place since it's kind of tucked away on St. John - like a hidden gem! I've enjoyed the majority of the items I've tried here. Oh Huong's, why did it take me a whole year to find you???
M04 Banh Canh Tom Heo/ Round Rice Noodle Soup w/ Shrimp and Pork ($9.95) - my absolute favorite! The rice noodles are similar to udon in a pork based soup with extremely tender sliced pork, pork knuckles, sliced Vietnamese pork roll and large de-shelled, de-veined shrimp. It's topped with cilantro, fried onions/shallots and other goodies I can't fully remember. (I usually order it without the pork knuckles since I've never been a fan of it). The broth is absolutely flavorful - it's even better than the banh canh I've had back in SoCal!
C04 Com suon bi cha/ Pork Chop (w/ rice) Combination ($10.95) - We call this "Broken Rice" in SoCal. I didn't think any restaurant in Portland has this dish anymore! The rice dish comes with a cut of meatloaf that is very we'll seasoned, char-grilled pork chop to perfection, shredded pork, a side of lettuce/cucumbers/tomatoes and fish sauce. I personally don't think the fish sauce is overpowering at all - so don't be afraid to order this dish!
P05 Pho Tai Bo Vien / Pho w/ Rare Steak and Meatballs ($7.95) - the best pho in Portland! I've tried quite a few Vietnamese restaurants in search of a hearty bowl of soup for a cold winter night. They've done it again with the FLAVOR! It warms my belly and puts a smile on my face. Get your pho fixing' especially to cure those awful hangovers ;)
M13 Mi Xao Don Thap Cam / House Combination Crispy Lo Mein ($10.95) - good dish but not my favorite. The noodles are indeed very crispy and is balanced nicely with the sauce, meat and veggies (bell peppers, carrots, broccoli and onions).
They have 'specials' that they serve on weekends that I highly recommend:
- Bun Bo Hue (thick rice noodles Hue style soup with beef, pork blood (optional), Vietnamese pork rolls)
- Bun Moc (thin rice noodles in a pork based soup w/ pork paste 'meatballs')
Smoothies are delicious. I really enjoy the avocado and the durian smoothies. For those of you who don't know what durian are, I suggest looking it up or asking to have a whiff of it before you order. It's a very fragrant fruit which people tend to describe as 'stinky' - I personally think it smells delicious, but I have an abnormally odd obsession with durian. If you haven't already, I highly suggest you trying the avocado smoothie. It basically avocado, ice, and condensed milk all blended together. Trust me, it's GOOD.
I'm not a fan of their vermicelli noodles, but that's not saying it's bad.
This seems to be a family-run restaurant and everyone is really nice. It's pretty spacious and I've never had to wait for a table. Food comes out quick and there are lots of condiments on the table. Seems like they have lots of regulars that come in (way more than I do, and I come here about once a week) since the servers ask if they want the 'usual' and carry personal conversations with each other.
I'll definitely continue to support Huong's. They make me miss home a little less every time I dine here. They're the ones that will get me through grad school!
