Before you read the review, keep this in mind: Get there early or call for reservations!!! They are very busy, and the kitchen closes an hour before the restaurant closes. That seems to be very commonplace on AMI. Now on to the review!
Due to us not knowing about how busy Hurricane Hank's is, we ended up eating at the bar. That was the only option we had by the time we arrived. It turned out to not be a bad thing. Our server / bartender was great. He was attentive and chatty without being overly intrusive. The star of the show, by far, is the onion rings! Holy Cow, they are huge. They are not only large, but they are cooked to absolute perfection. I generally judge onion rings on 2 things. First is the breading and second is the tooth pull (for lack of a better term). Nothing is more annoying than biting into an onion ring and then having the onion slide out of the breading. The breading on the onion rings were thick but crispy and when you bit into the onions, they are cooked just enough so that they don't slide out. Amazing onion rings. I mean an absolute master class in onion rings making if there is such a thing. So, you are probably asking why I only awarded 4 stars. That's where the main course comes in. There were 4 of us eating. 3 of us decided to get the fish and chips and the other got a wedge salad. It was the largest wedge salad I have ever seen, and I wish I had ordered that instead of the fish and chips. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll be aware that my wife and I are fish and chips fanatics. I judge fish and chips based on a few things. Quantity / size of the fish, breading, crispiness of the fries, and temperature of the meal. Needless to say, Hurricane Hanks only hit 2 of the 4 requirements. The size of the piece of fish and breading were spot on. The fish was juicy and delicious, and the breading was just right. That said, the meal was warm at best, and the fries were soggy and barely warm. It's pretty obvious to me that the fries were plated well before the fish was done and sat there under a lamp. It was also blatantly obvious that there wasn't a runner on duty that night because while the fish was tasty it definitely wasn't fresh out of the frier.
Regardless of the experience with the fish and chips that night, I highly recommend giving Hurricane Hanks a shot. There are plenty of other menu options and whatever else you order, don't miss out on those onion rings!
