Best Tampa-Area Spots For Chardonnay This Memorial Day | Eater

"Neon lights and a full liquor bar bring life to Hurricane Hanks. Though it’s at its peak during hockey and football games, you’ll still find a lively atmosphere on other nights, especially when enjoying menu selections like half rack barbecue pork ribs or island crab cakes with a glass of Harken." - Matthew Meltzer

Went here after the beach. We sat outside at a small table. The staff was friendly and sat us right away. The server was very attentive. Our food was delicious! I got scallop/shrimp/mushroom risotto with a side salad. My boyfriend loved his Grouper tacos! I look forward to visiting again someday!

Visited 26APR25:: my girlfriend and I came to this area as a weekend get a way. We picked this place solely based off of her sons name, who wasn't with us. She ordered the chicken your way, char grilled, the piece of chicken was a decent size, the brioche bun was good and soft just the chicken lacked flavor. Seemed as though there wasn't salt, pepper or any seasoning. Only could taste the char grilled. Island fries, which are just regular fries the server said they just named it that because we're on an island, were top 5 of what she's had. Nice and crispy not greasy. I ordeee the maple orange salmon. Lacked flavor wasn't very maple tasting or orange. I would suggest to add orange zest for a bright flavor. Good size piece. Baked potato was ordinary. The atmosphere was nice and relaxing, small but they made the seating work. Our server wasn't over the top.

We have been sleeping on this place and we regret it! This is our fifth visit to the island and our first time visiting Hurricane Hanks. We were blown away with the quality, taste and portions of the food. Rachel was our server and she was so helpful and made the experience wonderful. We had the crab cake stuffed grouper, shrimp risotto, meatloaf, chicken tenders and a side of onion rings. Come early or you’ll be on a long wait, they fill up fast and for good reason!!

Google
Hurricane Hanks – Where Your Taste Buds Go on Spring Break Walking into Hurricane Hanks is like finding a Florida man who’s mastered both culinary arts and hospitality—wild, slightly saucy, and 100% satisfying. Let’s start with the Hurricane Wings. I don’t know who Hank is, but if he’s in charge of the wing sauce decisions, this man deserves a statue. These things are tossed like they just graduated from flavor university. Hot, medium, BBQ, garlic parm—you can practically hear them whisper “you’re welcome” as they land on your table with that side of blue cheese dressing that could double as a face mask in an emergency. Now, if you don’t order the Island Crab Cakes, you may want to reevaluate your life choices. These blue crab beauties drizzled in Cajun remoulade are so good they’ll have you singing Jimmy Buffett ballads while questioning why you ever trusted frozen appetizers. And the Ahi Tuna Stacker? Stacked like your friend who still goes to the gym in January. Sashimi grade tuna with guacamole and a Sriracha aioli? I cried. My taste buds held a gratitude ceremony. Throw in some wonton crisps and suddenly you’re dining like a coastal millionaire. Let’s not overlook the fried artichokes, which I thought were just fancy vegetables until these Parmesan-dusted bad boys showed up and made me rethink everything I knew about snacking. The Pub Shrimp came in like they owned the place—perfectly golden and dipped in cocktail sauce that slapped in the best way possible. The Beer Battered Baskets are dipped in Guinness, which means they're legally Irish and emotionally comforting. Even the salads come in swinging—there’s one with burrata and candied walnuts that tastes like a spa day for your soul. And the Kale Caesar is so good it made me forget it was kale. As for desserts, I don’t know who looked at key lime pie and said, “let’s make it dangerous,” but bless them. That and the Chocolate Bomb are basically emotional support sugar. Service? Impeccable. Everyone’s smiling like they just got off a yacht. And the menu? Huge. It’s like they handed a food-loving hurricane a clipboard and said, “Go wild.” In summary: Hurricane Hanks is where calories go to be appreciated and happiness is deep-fried, dressed in aioli, and served with a wedge salad. 10/10 would let this storm hit me again.

Google
This was an accidental run in. We didn’t even see it but stopped in for a shop next door then decided to have lunch. Hands down the best fish tacos I’ve had in a very long time and the onion rings were stellar! We sat at the bar. Didn’t get the bartenders name, but she was on point with maintaining a great pace for service with all the seats full. Lots of people came in for take out orders, so this tells me this place is the real deal! When we come back down for vacay next time, we will be going back. Definitely recommend.

Google
Food is excellent! We spend a lot of time on the island throughout the year, regularly order carry out from here. The food is just amazing, good quality, well cooked, & staff is friendly and helpful. Also a great place to grab drinks anytime of day but we enjoy popping in mid afternoon to get out of the summer heat for a bit. 10/10 recommend for carry out or for dine in! Love the grouper sandwich & tacos! Also- if you like a dirty martini, this was the best one we had one the island ! Cheers!

We ordered takeout from Hurricane Hanks last weekend while my brother, sister-in-law, and their four kids were visiting us here on Anna Maria Island—and it was a fantastic experience! Everything was packaged perfectly and still hot when we got it home. I had the chicken parm, and it was absolutely amazing! The portion was so generous it lasted me three meals, and it was just as delicious each time. The whole family was impressed with their meals—and that’s saying something with four kids in the mix! A big bonus: my sister-in-law is gluten-free, and Hurricane Hanks had plenty of great options for her to choose from. She really appreciated being able to enjoy a delicious meal without worrying about dietary restrictions. My husband and I live local and love discovering great spots to support, and this one definitely makes the list. We’ll be back soon to dine in and enjoy the full experience!

Google
We stopped into Hurricane Hanks for dinner on our last night out and had a great time and meal! For our starters, we had the infamous tuna stack which was so delicious!! We also had the peel & eat shrimp with butter which were fantastic- great flavor! For our mains, we had the grouper tacos, fish and chips and chicken piccata. Our only regret is not visiting and trying out hurricane Hanks sooner, but we’re sooo happy we did so we can add it to our AMI rotation!

Yelp
My family and I visit Anna Maria Island quite often and almost every time we are in the area, someone recommends that we try Hurricane Hanks. On our first day on the island, we decided to grab lunch here. The restaurant is on the smaller side and you seat yourself (this definitely gives the space a more chill vibe, which I like). The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated with beachy decor. There is a parking lot right outside the restaurant, so no worries there. I ordered a taco salad for lunch. It included lettuce, beef, pico de gallo, sour cream, cheese, and olives, all sitting in a massive tortilla chip bowl. The portion was huge and is most definitely shareable. My dad and sister ordered the grouper sandwich with fries, and they both said it was delicious. My other sister ordered the chicken tender basket, and she enjoyed those as well. Needless to say, the food, atmosphere, and service was great! Portions are quite big and everyone had food leftover, so keep that in mind when ordering. I love that there are two island shops next door to the restaurant. This is the perfect spot for a bite to eat and I can see why so many have told us to try this spot out!

Yelp
Before you read the review, keep this in mind: Get there early or call for reservations!!! They are very busy, and the kitchen closes an hour before the restaurant closes. That seems to be very commonplace on AMI. Now on to the review! Due to us not knowing about how busy Hurricane Hank's is, we ended up eating at the bar. That was the only option we had by the time we arrived. It turned out to not be a bad thing. Our server / bartender was great. He was attentive and chatty without being overly intrusive. The star of the show, by far, is the onion rings! Holy Cow, they are huge. They are not only large, but they are cooked to absolute perfection. I generally judge onion rings on 2 things. First is the breading and second is the tooth pull (for lack of a better term). Nothing is more annoying than biting into an onion ring and then having the onion slide out of the breading. The breading on the onion rings were thick but crispy and when you bit into the onions, they are cooked just enough so that they don't slide out. Amazing onion rings. I mean an absolute master class in onion rings making if there is such a thing. So, you are probably asking why I only awarded 4 stars. That's where the main course comes in. There were 4 of us eating. 3 of us decided to get the fish and chips and the other got a wedge salad. It was the largest wedge salad I have ever seen, and I wish I had ordered that instead of the fish and chips. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll be aware that my wife and I are fish and chips fanatics. I judge fish and chips based on a few things. Quantity / size of the fish, breading, crispiness of the fries, and temperature of the meal. Needless to say, Hurricane Hanks only hit 2 of the 4 requirements. The size of the piece of fish and breading were spot on. The fish was juicy and delicious, and the breading was just right. That said, the meal was warm at best, and the fries were soggy and barely warm. It's pretty obvious to me that the fries were plated well before the fish was done and sat there under a lamp. It was also blatantly obvious that there wasn't a runner on duty that night because while the fish was tasty it definitely wasn't fresh out of the frier. Regardless of the experience with the fish and chips that night, I highly recommend giving Hurricane Hanks a shot. There are plenty of other menu options and whatever else you order, don't miss out on those onion rings!

Yelp
where the locals go! Hurricane Hanks is simply amazing no matter what you choose from the menu--Amazing Grilled Grouper Tacos! Look at the size of those pieces of grouper in the taco! Make sure you check this place out if you're visiting the island! Everything on the menu is excellent every time. Great atmosphere and service. Top notch all the way

Yelp
We got take out. Food was good but not great. Everyone ordered onion rings, and while they were large, an order consisted of two.

Yelp
We had a great dinner out at local favorite, Hurricane Hanks. While we had a little bit of a wait (relatively small dining room for the business they attract), the wonderful hostess, Mackena, kept us updated and tossed out a few of her favorite menu items. It made us hungrier and anxious to try the fare. Anna Marie (on Anna Maria Island) was our server and helped us navigate the menu. Everything the recommended was great and while I took her recommendation (a Cuban with massive onion rings), my son followed Makena's guidance (fried chicken sandwich). The bacon wrapped scallop appetizer was a tasty choice, washed down with a cold draft beer. The food came out quickly, and we enjoyed the lively dining room, great service, and good food. Be prepared to wait, but it will be worth it.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Friday evening had an hour wait for a table. Got seated and waited another 15 minutes for water. Place was nice and had a good vibe. We spoke with several locals who frequent Hanks often and were talking it up we were excited. Our waitress was nice and helpful when she was around. Not once coming to check on our drinks, our entire visit. Food came out- it was delicious. After the meal we waited and waited for the check. I had to ask the bartender to get our waitress. She never appeared but another employee brought our ticket. My son had not received his upgrade Caesar salad, I questioned the new wait staff and he"gladly" comped the $1 up-charge. Which didn't make up for my son not getting one of his side dishes. Recap : food was very good- Service not so much!

Yelp
First of all: LISA our waitress was truly wonderfull and timely and simply perfect. I got the taco salad. TERRIBLE! I get it: why would you order that ? I was fished out over last month. Wanted something different...don't do it. Meat was dry, CLEARLY OLD( from earlier or previous day) and the salad didn't provide any plain salsa. I REALLY wanted this , but I couldn't finish. Told Lisa I was full. My son said the grouper tacos were 7/10...I guess that's good...my wife liked her chicken piccata... So? Don't get things that aren't super popular I guess. There are many choices on the island. I know this is popular. I'll try it again when I want fish, I guess.

Ellyana R.

Yelp
We arrived and were trying to find a table to sit 12, bottom line is that was not going to work, but the hostess was super kind in trying work out a way for our party to all sit near each other. We ended up going in to eat at separate times, about 5-10 minutes apart. It is a tiny little restaurant, with a bar. As I am not a big seafood lover, I ordered the Original cheeseburger meal and a sweet tea. Or so I thought. The sweet tea was, regrettably, not sweet. My burger and fries, however, were both absolutely delicious. We ordered the artichoke appetizer; that was amazing. The server was very kind. As I'm not much into seafood, I don't think I would go back just for the perfectly crispy fries, regrettably.

Yelp
Popped in for a drink and app on a Saturday afternoon and scored seats at the bar. Had yummy ahi tuna stacker. Our friends had the potato skins. Good fast and friendly service and the place was filling up fast. Definitely recommend if in the area and looking for a spot. Beachy decor in a strip mall and totally works.

Yelp
Nice hole in the wall bar/restaurant at the front of Anna Maria. If you're looking for a quiet place for a meal, this isn't it. We waited about 30 minutes for a table on saturday night (not a big deal). Our server was friendly & did the best she could given how busy they were. We ordered the fried gouda mac n' cheese bites as an appetizer & they were fantastic. For our entrees we got the Fish and Chips & The Decadent Burger. Both portions were more than enough so we left satisfied. Will probably come back to quell a burger craving on our next vacation here.

Yelp
This is a top 3 Florida restaraunt, absolutely fantastic food, not too expensive, and utterly delectable. This place has it all, onion rings and chicken tenders bigger than your hand, accompanied by delicious sauces to dip in. There's nothing I haven't loved from their menu, I can't wait til I'm back in the area to eat here again!!

Yelp
Sorry to say was not impressed by Hurricane Hanks. The previous reviews led us there, but the extremely dirty sidewalk at front door was not a good first impression. We were seated fairly quickly on Mother's Day for dinner. The waitress was engaging and her service was consistent. Family members dinners were excellent: meatloaf entree, fish & shrimp entree with delicious coleslaw, even the child's Kraft Mac & cheese was good. They have a delicious, very fresh Caesar salad. My personal order was terrible. I try the Cuban sandwiches at almost every restaurant we visit when it is on the menu. This was the worst. The three pieces of meat were so thin you could almost see thru them and all I could taste was the bread & mustard. It had 1 tiny round pickle slice on it. I wanted to send it back but place was very busy & didn't want family to wait while they replaced my order. Everyone else's entrée was good. I would just say don't order their Cuban sandwich because you will be very disappointed.

Yelp
We always love going to Hanks! Great food! Great drinks! Great bartenders! It is so much better than the stupid grouper!
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Not a lot of seating but our party of 8 was seated immediately on a busy Friday at 4pm...we all enjoyed our meals and everyone got some form of grouper...tacos, salads with meat, etc... The grouper was excellent...onion rings are massive and tasty! Ashley was an excellent server and took great care of us...we'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Deanna W.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years and have enjoyed a variety of their things. My boyfriend especially likes the taco salad. But today I tried a brand new addition to the menu which is a spicy sweet potato sandwich with garlic aioli sauce. And it is remarkably good. I am definitely nothing of a vegan or vegetarian, but Really enjoyed the sandwich. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. And we've always had a good experience here so if you're on Ana Maria Island, you should check it out.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
My fiancé and I had such a perfect dinner here. We started off with the crab cakes and ahi tuna apps. Both were incredibly delicious and I would order those two again and again. We also ordered the salmon entree and grouper tacos. Once again, absolutely delicious. Our server was awesome too. When I'm back in the area, I'll absolutely check this spot out again.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
The food was so good! The batter for the fried food is amazing! Best meal we have had so far in anna marie island.
google avatar

Cricket C.

Yelp
Small place and it was packed which made our service slow I guess. We sat ourselves and it took a long time just to get menus. The water tastes bad so skip that (and I'm from Florida). I also ordered a Paloma that was horrible but the food was really good and the service did pick up once a few checks cleared. I wish I had just ordered a Diet Coke instead of the other attempts at drinks LOL
google avatar

Tu T.

Yelp
Fried grouper sandwich is a must try! Large grouper filet was cooked perfectly and was joined with nice, crispy fries. Key lime martini was strong but great tasting. Key lime pie...not so great. I know it can vary in color but the one we got today (9/8/2024) had such a deep golden like yellow, it resembled a custard more than key lime pie. When told to waitress, she just apologized...even though over 3/4 of the pie remained on the plate. Oh well. So give this place a try for their grouper. It's fresh and can be made three different ways. For a slice of key lime...I'd prob pass on it here.
google avatar

Dwaine C.

Yelp
Nice local restaurant. Service was very friendly and she brought us everything. Atmosphere is beach casual. My wife got the roasted peach and burrata salad with grilled chicken. She got extra dressing and it was good. A little sweet. I got the shrimp and fish with onion rings. Cod was delicious and cooked good. I ask for crispy onion rings. But they are so big. My shrimp were barely cooked. It was a little greasy.
google avatar

Tabitha T.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, great service, and delicious food! Perfect for any size group. Large portions. Full bar.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
Food is delicious, Daniel was a fantastic waiter! We love coming here every time we're visiting the island.
google avatar

Greg N.

Yelp
An awesome experience all around. Tracy, our waitress was terrific. Everything was good here. Our family got the grouper tacos, onion rings, crab cakes, chicken tenders, lobster mac and cheese, and ribs. We recommend going here before you leave the island. 5 stars.

Jane T.

Yelp
Coming from a chicken tenders freak, these are the best chicken tenders I've ever had. Very tender and crisp but soft breading!!!
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Bradley at the host stand was super nice. He helped accommodate our group of 17 people. He was able to split us up into 3 tables - about 1 1/2 hour wait. Our server on the other hand was less to be desired. Our table of 6 and she was very confused. Two people at our table got food very late compared to the rest of us. Food was very good! Bradley was amazing! Service was slow and confusing!
google avatar

Tamara L.

Yelp
Loved this place and would definitely go back!!! Definitely high quality food with reasonable prices. We sampled the peach burrata salad, and it was the perfect touch to a summer day. The risotto was creamy, cheesy and full of flavor, and honestly, it might have been the best I've ever been had. The grouper tacos were also so very tasty! I highly recommend!
google avatar

Sherry C.

Yelp
We drove by this every day when we were on vacation last week. Always said we need to stop as we had heard great things about it. So, the last night we did have supper there. i had the blackened shrimp and hubby had the grouper. We even tried the baked artichoke (was not a fan). Everything else was wonderful. It is small but plenty of seating. Worth checking out!
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
Food was great, service was fast, the ambiance was good. Casual, great little place to eat.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
Don't know what the food or atmosphere is like because we couldn't even make it through the door. My husband had a service dog and the host lady at the front said no dogs allowed when we clearly said he is a service dog. She questioned it was actually a service dog because he doesn't have a vest?? He didn't have his vest on because we just came from the beach and it was sandy. (Which you don't have to have any identification that is a service dog) It was really off putting when the host said sorry I just don't think we are allowed to have them?'?!! We realized we were dealing with someone not very intelligent and took our business else where. We have never been basically refused service because my husband's service dog.

Kim W.

Yelp
The service was good however I ordered a pound of peel and eat shrimp and I would have sworn they reheated the cold shrimp they had already cooked. It was terrible. Dry and chewy. Not at all what I hoped for in a restaurant with decent reviews. If I had ordered them cold like the man next to me it likely would have been better. Sad for the first meal on Anna Maria island.

Rachel K.

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner here. It was quite small but we were there early enough we had no problem getting a table right away and the food came out so quick. I had the shrimp and scallop risotto and it was phenomenal. Husband enjoyed his fish and chips but had the last few bites of mine and said he would get that the next time.
google avatar

Ron G.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Great service. Our server Sabrina, was very attentive. The drinks were good and the food was solid. I had the taco salad, and was very good, but could use some salsa or refried beans to break up all the dry ingredients. My wife had the fish and shrimp which was very good but a little heavy on the breading on the shrimp otherwise delicious fish. Our appetizer was crabcakes and they were delicious.
google avatar

Bethany B.

Yelp
Great grouper tacos and their spicy pineapple margarita was amazing. We also ordered the fried shrimp, which was delicious.
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Hurricane Hanks isn't a huge place but we're still able to accommodate our party of 8 with just a short wait. Service was great as was the food. No matter what you decide on for your entree don't miss out on the clam chowder!
google avatar

R R.

Yelp
Never fails... food and service awesome... our 3x visiting and always on point. For being off season place was with a 45-1hr wait for dinner
google avatar

Kuzz R.

Yelp
It's a pretty good joint, I just have 3 complaints. The place is pretty small and trying to get a wheelchair in here is impossible without asking people to move their chairs. The second complaint is that it took a while to get our food. Some people came in about 10 minutes after we ordered, and got served first. The food was good and the decorations were also cool. The thing that creeped me out is there was some drunk guy near the bar, walking around weirdly and laughing really loudly. I will come back here but not for a while.
google avatar

Maddie B.

Yelp
After getting poured on at the beach, I wasn't in the mood to get dressed up to go to dinner, and wanted something that I could pick- up for takeout. After calling numerous restaurants, I landed on Hurricane Hank's as they were the only place willing to take my order at 8 p.m.. My boyfriend went in to pick it up, and said that the service was great despite only one person behind the bar. We both got the Grouper Sandwich. It was delicious! I prefer veggie sides, and sadly they were out, but the fries were good. I highly recommend for a quick bite, and appreciate their willingness to take out order despite how late it was!

Michael A.

Yelp
The blackened grouper tacos slapped 10/10 Service was alright, they were busy so didn't get a lot of refills but it happens.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant we tried on AMI. There was a short wait for a table but they call your cell phone when it's ready so we were able to walk around the shopping center outside while we waited. Our server was friendly and quick with refills even though they were busy and it was toward the end of the night. The food was overall great! The wedge salad with added blackened chicken was delicious and the stolen bites of my daughter's lobster Mac n Cheese were so yummy! The grilled peach and burrata salad with candied walnuts was also amazing. Only thing that wasn't the greatest was the taco salad, not bad just not one to order again. Can't win 'em all. I'd definitely go back.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Has a full bar in a casual atmosphere. TVs to watch in a friendly staff. The food is what shines. Their grouper sandwich is what I regularly order. You should definitely give it a shot
google avatar

Indhira P.

Yelp
Loved it! Quick and fast service, the airee was really helpful guiding us about drinks and the menu. Food was served on time and as requested. No pics, I was starving
google avatar

Yelp
Always the best! Local neighborhood restaurant with fresh food, great drinks, excellent staff.

Ellen D.

Yelp
Hurricane Hanks is a very casual spot with the best crab cakes on the island! We ate there three times during our stay. Highly recommend!

Mandy L.

Yelp
Best shrimp!!!! Back to back nights it was so good. Lobster Mac n cheese was amazing!
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday evening at 8pm, the place was pretty full and we got one of the last tables left. Service was quick. We got our waters and orders in quickly. We got the veggie burger - which was good. The bishop bowl with blackened chicken which was FANTASTIC!! I would absolutely get it again. Also 2 of us got the stuffed grouper which was the "best fish dish they've had". We'd all go back again! 10/10
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
We've been here many times on our trips to AMI every summer. It used to be an outstanding spot with some of the best seafood on the island. Lately we've been very sad to see the quality of the experience fall dramatically. While the food is still good, it's not worth the usual 2 hour wait and the service has been so bad it's almost nonexistent. After seating, it might take your wait staff 20 min to even visit the table for a drink order. Food arrives to the table in erratic order most of the time with one of the meals either wrong or missing when others receive their food. It's well known that quality service staff is difficult to find or keep post-COVID but Hurricane Hanks seems to be an especially unique casualty of the poor service seen at so many establishments these days.

Randy K.

Yelp
Terrific food and great service from Lisa. My meatloaf with a rich mushroom gravy was the best I've ever had. The baked potato and onion rings accompaniments were delicious, too. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her small filet, with a similar rich, demi-glace sauce. Prices were quite fair for the large portions. The atmosphere was very plain, but you can't eat atmosphere. This restaurant is a gem! We will definitely go back.
