LA Restaurants That Have Permanently Closed During the COVID-19 Crisis - Eater LA

"West LA’s curry scene took a hit last year when Curry House suddenly closed just before the start of the pandemic. Now Hurry Curry, a long time strip mall gem along Sawtelle Japantown, has closed permanently as of late February. The restaurant had a long history in the neighborhood, opening back in 1989." - Matthew Kang

The Baseline: For Japanese curry the sauce must have body with spice/flavor, the meats must be prepared well, the add ons must be good, and the environment must be welcoming. Food: This is an awesome curry place and I used to frequent the old Sawtelle location until it closed and Hurry Curry left us wanting in Los Angeles. Now they are back at this new location and my curry happiness has been fulfilled once more. The fried chicken Karaage was crisp and hot, mixed well with the spicy heat of the curry. I enjoyed the spice level and only went to a medium level which was a good level. It can go to extra hot spice which I think can be too much. Service: The service was great. Food was delivered to the table quickly and the staff was friendly. Gave me a bowl of pickled ginger to accompany my curry. My tea and water glass was filled consistently. Ambiance: This location is a nice, clean place with fun decor. Restrooms were clean and serviced. Very nice outdoor area for dining during warmer weather.

Went for my first time for a friend's birthday dinner. Had the seafood curry and the calamari appetizer. Fantastic. The staff was all very nice and polite and patient with our loudness.

Google
Simply sublime curry. The fried Chicken Karaage is majestic & the best I've ever had. The service is ready, the portions are hardy. Just be aware that only true champions of spice can handle anything above mild. Do yourself a favor if you love Japanese curry and partake of this place, you won't regret it.

We loved coming here when they were located in sawtelle and still really enjoy their food in the new location. Miss the table service, but ordering at the counter and then sitting down brought the food out super quick. The curry fries are da 💣 and the chicken in white sauce is different and delicious. They have ample outdoor seating and parking is in the lot behind the shopping center. A great addition to Ocean Park neighborhood.

We missed their Sawtelle and Pasadena location from years ago and very happy they are alive and well ❤️. Food was just like I remembered it, but actually more generous portions - glad they didn't skimp on quality and quantity with the rise in inflation. My family had a great meal. I don't live in the area anymore but will definitely visit whenever we're in town.

Google
An amazing place to have the most wonderful Tokyo Style Curry. Fist of all, it’s absolutely delicious and tastes so fresh, personally I’m addicted to their lobster bisque, portions are very generous and you can even upgrade with delicious add-ons. Selection is also amazing something for everyone. Service is amazing, the most friendly service with a personal touch. This is definitely the place you want to be a regular at.

Google
I love coming to Hurry Curry—not just for the flavorful and satisfying curry, but also for the consistently welcoming and attentive service. Dawn and Carlos are always so friendly and thoughtful, which makes each visit a pleasure. This place has become a regular spot for me, and I always leave looking forward to the next time.

Google
We ordered the beef croquette, the braised beef curry and the hiyashi chuka. Everything was spot on. The croquettes are big with fine ground meat, potato and a crispy exterior. The curry was a different color than I’ve seen before but extra delicious. The star though was the hiyashi chuka. It’s a cold noodle bowl. It was fresh and apparently seasonal so if you want it, now it the time. At first I didn’t think there was any sauce on it, but that’s because the sauce is thin and it’s at the bottom of the bowl, so you really wanna mix the whole bowl up well to get everything coated. I recommend giving this place a try. The service was good and the restaurant was spotless. Our total was $44.

Yelp
SO GOOD. Got this place delivered and it was so good. Got the chicken cutlet curry and it was so good. Hot diggity. I could order another entree. I'll be back. Thanks for the phenomenal food!

Yelp
This long time favorite restaurant for Japanese-style curries in Los Angeles continues to be a great choice. Even though there was some sadness felt when they left the Little Osaka neighborhood, they stayed in West LA which isn't a too far departure. Their katsu items are good and consistent. The curries are consistent and characteristic of the Japanese style, and the availability of spice levels is a welcome choice for every customer. Side items are the same menu items. Japanese style comfort food at its best.

Yelp
So glad they reopened - this new location also has a much better parking situation. The food is consistently good. When they first reopened the rice was terrible, but it seems like that issue has been fixed. It can take a little while to get the attention of the staff to order, as there only seems to be one or two people working the front at a time. That said, service is always with a smile. Very chill vibe. Water station available at all times, which is helpful when I'm taking an order to go and waiting around.

Yelp
Such high-quality curry! Great meat, big portions! Nice place with lots of light and some outdoor tables too. Can't wait to try more!

Yelp
The curry here is so savory and full of richness! The medium or hot was perfect for us if you want a small kick. We had to ask for the pickles but they give you plenty and they're perfect with the dishes. The menchi katsu was juicy but did rely on the curry for flavor. The rice and cabbage salad created the perfect bite with the curry and ground beef. I enjoyed my friends karaage chicken which had a slightly sweet seasoning and even though it was breast, it was still juicy enough. The pork cutlet was the only item that was a little dry unfortunately. Service was fast and the ambiance was pleasant.

Andy G.

Yelp
I love it here: the food, the prices, the outdoor seating., service, all amazing. I had the chicken karaage curry. It was two meals worth for me.
google avatar

Mallory C.

Yelp
The curry here is super comforting! When I went, I had originally wanted to go to a nearby brunch spot, but that place was packed with people and had a line out the door. So I walked over to Hurry Curry of Tokyo to pivot my plans and I don't regret it. I loved all the options of how you can order your curry and it's super comforting on a cooler day. Since it was my first time there and I didn't want to get overwhelmed by food, I got the Braised Chicken Curry (light eater's portion) and it was the perfect amount of food for me. It was also warm and delicious! Highly recommend stopping in for curry if you're in the area.

Yelp
Sunday lunch at 11:30 am - pork cutlet curry (medium spicy), cream corn soup Service: Self-served Ambiance: Casual, clean, music a little bit loud Price: Ok Food quality: the cream corn soup and the pork cutlet were okay, and the curry sauce was amazing, but the rice was a little bit dry.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
We always get the chicken cutlet curry, this is such a delicious meal. The curry sauce is what really makes this meal amazing. The workers are always very friendly and their service is always great. Definitely worth the drive.
google avatar

Yelp
My new go-to place for Japanese chicken katsu curry after Curry House closed (RIP). It's not as good as Curry House but it will have to do. The cream corn soup is a little watery and not as thick and creamy as the name would imply. Only downside is that the spiciness of the curry varies from day to day. Some days the medium is not spicy, other days it's spicier than expected.

Yelp
Hurry Curry is nice spot of ocean park blvd. The parking situation is a little rough but once you get past that your solid. The inside is really and great and good for group seating and of you want you can even eat outside and both have great vibes. The food is fresh and always comes out pretty fast the waiters and waitress are on it. The pork cutlet is typically my go to it comes with pork cutlet rice a small sad and curry. It always cooked well and has tons of flavor. Alaways get my curry spicy and throw it right on top and it's just a party of flavor. The chili cheese fries are the stand out. The fries were cooked to perfection and seasoned so well. The chili has so much flavor and it comes in a container on the side and you throw it on top of the the fries at your will and it the most amazing thing ever. Might be the best chilli cheese fries I had. Highly recommended. Gyoza there was pretty standard cooked well and had good flavor. 4.75

Yelp
This is my favorite spot for Japanese chicken and curry! Their chicken karage curry is one of the best chicken curry pairings I've ever had. If you are a fan of Coco Ichibanya then this place is a must try!

Y C.

Yelp
I have been a regular at Hurry Curry for the past few years, and I've noticed a significant decline in the quality of the rice recently. I'm not sure if this is due to budget constraints, but it seems they may have opted for a lower quality variety than before, or there could be a shortage of the rice they previously used.

Yelp
So yummy, super quick and easy. I almost always have leftovers. The staff is always super friendly, too. Great place to go if you want a quick dinner option.

Yelp
My family loves this place! Despite frequently cooking/eating Japanese curry at home, we still like visiting Hurry Curry. This whole area has many great shops and is a good location. I've gotten the karaage curry before and the karaage is so flavorful! It tastes a bit sweeter than other places so I feel it's a little unique. Definitely fills you up, you won't leave hungry. The menchi katsu is also so juicy and savory-- you don't see it at many other places so I was happy to order it here. I've also tried some bites of the braised beef curry and tokyo curry, which were both very good! Planning on getting the braised beef next time since the beef was so soft and satisfying. You get a little salad with these orders, which is refreshing to start with. Pros: Menu has lots of variety (even pastas/salad) and the portions are large. Never had a problem with service and there are a good number of seats inside. Parking in the back. Cons: Can't think of one!

Yelp
Looking for a curry fix in Santa Monica? Look no further than Hurry Curry! This quaint little joint is tucked away in Ocean Park in Santa Monica, but don't let its unassuming exterior fool you. Inside, you'll find a funky, retro atmosphere that's perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. But let's get to the real reason you're here: the curry. And boy, does Hurry Curry deliver. From the corn soup to the menchi Katsu - every dish is bursting with flavor and spice. But it's not just the food that makes Hurry Curry stand out. The service is top-notch, with friendly staff who are more than happy to make recommendations or help you navigate the menu. And if you're in a rush, they even offer a handy "curry in a hurry" option for takeout. So if you're in the mood for some seriously delicious curry in a fun and funky setting, hurry on over to Hurry Curry!
google avatar

Isabel B.

Yelp
Been here a couple times and overall very solid and good food experience! Karaage is not the most authentic you can find but still delicious overall. Loco Moco is also great and croquettes are very filling. Service is very quick and it's not usually crowded. A must try if you're in the area. Parking can get difficult if it's busy since it shares with other establishments.

Yelp
Quick, tasty and kind of healthy. We had the katsu and it was very good. It's fast food curries, one orders at the counter. Man at counter super helpful and gave suggestions. Will return for a quick weeknight meal.

Yelp
Was so happy when I saw they reopened Hurry Curry of Tokyo. I used to eat them all the time when they were on Sawtelle. Now they're in Santa Monica and still have the exact same great tasting chicken cutlet curry.

Yelp
We tried Hurry Curry when we visited a museum. We met with my husband's friend who said Hurry Curry was pretty popular. I got the chicken cutlet curry. I thought it was interesting that they put the curry on the side and you can put however much you want. I guess I'm just used to having everything already on the plate. The curry was very well flavored but it was different. It didn't taste like the curry that we have back home. But it still went well with the chicken. Everyone had something different but they all seemed to enjoy their food. You know it's a good place when you look down the table and everyone's plate is wiped clean.

Mason N.

Yelp
Everything is just that little bit better, the meat is just a little bit more tender and juicy, the curry is just a little bit richer and spicier, the rice is just a little more fragrant, if you get katsu the breading is just a little bit crispier. This is a small thing I've noticed about this place and its counterpart in Seattle but the food always comes out steaming hot! I hate when you go to a restaurant and the food has been sitting on a warming area for a couple minutes and yeah its hot but its not like fresh out of the kitchen. Here, the food really always feels like its just been made and I love that and I wish everywhere was like that. Most everything on the menu is great if you aren't feeling curry. Staff is always friendly and nice. I love how open and how much natural light the dining area has and the parking situation is mostly easy which is a godsend. I live in the valley, so when it works out with my schedule that this place is on my way somewhere when I have a free hour I generally make a point to get lunch here and I always look forward to it and I always leave really satisfied. I dunno its just one of those things that I really love and nobody really talks about it so I wanted to contribute my voice however small it might be.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Definitely one of the better curry experiences I've had. Parking is shared with other businesses in the plaza and is behind the restaurant. Service was friendly and relatively quick. Lighting was a bit dark which isn't always a bad thing and the decor was nice! I got the Fried Chicken Karaage Curry and it came with a side salad. The chicken was lightly breaded and crispy. The curry itself was very flavorful and one of the best I've had although a bit cold when it came out. The price felt right for the portion size. I had a sip of my friends lobster bisque which tasted just ok, nothing special. Overall, I can see myself returning with friends when I'm craving curry!

Yelp
So good! We had the house made gyoza, potato croquettes apps. Very good. Menchi Katsu curry extra hot was filling and left a nice burn on the lips. My wife had the liter braised chicken curry which she raved about. And I would eat anything covered in whatever they put on the tofu salad! Low key dining perfect for families with kids. Kudos!!

Yelp
My favorite place is hurry curry, the curry has amazing flavor and the Katsu is perfectly crispy they move from sawtelle here so don't mistaken.

Yelp
Ooof.. The quality of food really tanked in the recent years and I wonder what happened. We came here on Friday night, and the group ordered just about everything on the menu. Everything we ordered were bad and tasted like they were made previously and reheated in the moment. The reason why I didn't give it a 1 star was the workers did a good job taking our large order and getting all the right plates to us which was impressive for a group of 12. - Corn soup: watery and luke warm. - Karage Chicken curry: It's not karage chicken, but more like re-heated premade teriyaki chicken nugget. Tough as hell and awful. - Chicken cutlet curry: Dry chicken breast. - Curry sauce: bland, a little watery, low level of spicy even though we ordered medium to spicy. Basically about the same quality as the package curry sauce you get reheated. - Croquette: calling those croquette is a disgrace. What came out of the kitchen were 2 loosely shaped balls of fried ground beef. They were 2 soggy mess.

Yelp
The chicken cutlet curry plate was delicious! Good service and nice place! Super close to my office so it's also convenient for me!

Yelp
I first visited Hurry Curry on Sawtell in West LA in about 1986, when I worked nearby. They always had great curry selections and I frequented the restaurant every chance I got. I changed jobs and locations so i haven't been there since 2000. I was taking my son to the airport and thought about revisiting the place. I saw they closed the West LA location but opened one in Santa Monica. That was still on the way to the airport so we had dinner there. The food was just as good as I remembered and I think I'll have to try and make it there again real soon!
google avatar

Eleanor D.

Yelp
It really is SO GOOD! Very filling and delicious!! We ordered the Chicken Cutlet Curry - spice level Hot, to go. The portion was perfect and so was the amount of curry they give you on the side. I'm so glad we found this restaurant again (they were once upon a time on Sawtelle). So tasty folks!!! it'll be one of your faves too!
google avatar

Kymmeeh H.

Yelp
Soooo happy itssss back! Changed to order first and then grab table/sit down but still served on real tableware. Self serve water station. Prices are roughly the same as they were in Sawtelle (amazing given everything has gone up so much). I think the curry is a little spicier than before but maybe it's just been too long. Ambiance is airy and open. Some of the same art that was on the walls of Sawtelle. Yum! Happy camper I am!

Yelp
Hurry Curry of Tokyo is pure comfort. It's an unassuming, easy to miss spot in a more business focused area of Santa Monica. But make no mistake. The food absolutely hits. We ordered the braised chicken curry with extra meat + mushrooms and spinach, as well as the Tokyo curry with extra meat and veggies. Both were divine. But that Tokyo curry. That one was on another level. The Tokyo curry was succulent, bold, and slightly sweet. One of the most flavorful dishes that I've had. Every bite took me on a trip to divine intervention. I couldn't stop shoveling the curry from my rice to my mouth. And the bang for buck here is fantastic. I'm someone who can put down a lot of food. And I love that I can get a hearty, plentiful meal without breaking the bank here. The service? Very quick, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Another nice touch for someone who's perpetually hungry, appreciates guidance, and loves add-ones. Needless to say, we'll be back. Love it here!

Yelp
I've never had Japanese curry before. I've had curry from Indian spots so I can handle the heat. I had the chicken cutlet curry which was bad. The salad wasn't green with all those large pieces of lettuce. The rice was over cooked and bland. The actual curry was more sweet than hot and I asked for extra hot. I also tried out their curry udon. I had only a couple bites. All I know is that dish shouldn't be on the menu. As a person who's been to Tokyo multiple times, I would tell you to stay far away from this place.

Bean's H.

Yelp
So relieved it returned after leaving the Sawtelle location we visited frequently. There's a nice variety of choices beyond curry. V casual you walk up to a counter and pay and they bring the food to your table. Food is delish and satisfying and parking is super easy too

Yelp
Hurry! Hey, glad I came here to try Japanese curry for the first time. A friend of mine invited me to Hurry curry and I loved it. I'm really glad they serve the curry on the side just in case I don't like it. Off top, this place is clean and roomy. Very presentable and service here is A1. The presentation of the food is 5 stars. Well decorated and put together. I got the fried chicken (katsu) ? With rice and claw. Really good. My chicken was so soft yet crunchy. Perfect! The curry wasn't really my favorite. But a great first impression. The side salad was delicious. So were the gyoza. My friends ordered some stuff I can't remember and they really loved theirs too. Keep up the good work and I'm glad I came.

Yelp
First time being here cause I was craving Japanese curry. I saw this place on Yelp and saw it was pretty close by Sawtelle so I had to check it out! I ordered the chicken cutlet (extra hot) curry and subbed it with a corn soup. I was hoping to find a Coco Ichibanya substitute cause it's not open yet, and this place did not disappoint! The extra hot is perfect to me (but I loveeee spicy food) and did not compromise the flavor. The chicken cutlet was crispy and fresh off the fryer when I received my food. Definitely would go back again to try their chicken kaarage and their vegetarian options! There's a small shared parking lot in the back of the plaza so it's pretty convenient to go there.

Yelp
This is a fast food chain. Like Taco Bell. It's okay fast food if you want something, ahem, fast and under fluorescent lights. I'm not sure about all the "five star" ratings. Perhaps these yelpers are providing some logarithmic weighting scale that I'm unaware of. In the end, it's fast food for double the price since it's "Japanese". I had the fried chicken (hard to mess up), thick brown gravy (curry?) and a hard ball of rice with a little salad. It all tasted like, can you guess? Fast food.

Yelp
Hell yea Food Curry was freaking delicious. Rice was great. Menchi katsu was goodness. We ordered karaage and menchi katsu to start with. Then all got pork cutlet curry - medium. RIP Curry House, my brother and I have been on the hunt for the next best thing. This is really up there for us. Very deep flavor in the curry and they give you a lot in a separate bowl. I will say the pork cutlet was on the dryer side sadly, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt there and try them again. The karaage was really good BUT I don't think it's considered karaage? It wasn't battered but marinated and then deep fried? It was really good if you don't expect it to be battered chicken. Sweet flavor to it. Menchi Katsu was probably a big highlight for me. The potatoes seemed boiled/mixed in beef broth so it was really really flavorful. Service/Other It's a quick eats place. So yes it's sit down, but no it's not a full blown restaurant. Meaning when they're busy don't expect to be checked on too much. It's a small team that runs it and they have a crap ton of to-go orders. You order at the counter, get a number, seat yourself, and then wait for your food. But they are very kind and will get what you need when you flag them down. Overall, yes. Go. Eat. Here.

Yelp
Been coming to this restaurant for almost 20 years. They used to be located on Sawtelle but recently re-opened in SM. I was devastated to hear they closed during the pandemic since I had so many fond memories here and was ecstatic to hear they were reopening! The new location has plenty of FREE parking (2 Hours) and is located just north of the SM airport in a plaza. The old valet parking lot was horrible... new location is so much better! For those unfamiliar with the place, this is not your typical Indian style curry restaurant, but Japanese curry - slightly sweeter, less emphasis on the cumin, packed with savory flavor, and typically served over a fried pork / chicken / meat cutlet aka Katsu. The panko, or Japanese style breading on their cutlets is delicious, and their curry is amazing! They also have a number of other curry variations like a seafood medley, or eggplant for vegetarians. They offer mild, medium, hot or extra hot spice levels and found them to be somewhat muted - I'd suggest going up a level from your norm if you like a little kick. The Chicken Pasta is a fantastic alternative and one of my fav dishes that isn't curry-based. Served with soy glazed chicken, atop a bed of noodles and a medley of vegetables, this dish is sure to capture your tastebuds. The house cream sauce is mouthwateringly rich and tasty. Both this dish and any of the curry dishes come with a side of soy-vinaigrette salad, and flavorful sweet & tangy fukujinzuke, which is red pickled daikon (radish). If you prefer pasta with seafood, the Mentaiko & Ika is another fav. I love cod roe and calamari, and they pair the two perfectly here. Otherwise, the Seafood Spaghetti is a medley of calamari, shrimp, scallop, and fish in a delicious soy wine sauce, however, you can opt for a more traditional spaghetti in tomato sauce if you prefer. The panko crust on the potato croquette is perfectly crisp, and despite your insatiable desire to bite into it, give it a little time to rest as it's typically very hot! I like to cut it into pieces and let it cool down a bit. They also serve a ground beef variation which is great if you want a bit more sustenance (if I'm in a rush, sometimes I get this version with their Karaage for a quick snack). The Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) appetizer is the same chicken in the Chicken Pasta dish. If you don't want to commit to a full pasta plate, this is a great way to sample their tender sake-marinated chicken. I love their fried calamari as well. The batter is light and compliments the flavorful calamari well. They cook it just right and it's crisp on the outside, nice and moist on the inside. If you're looking for some soup, you can't go wrong with a side of miso, but their lobster bisque is heavenly. I highly recommend trying it! Lastly, if you've never tried one of the Japanese beverages they offer at a Mitsuya or other Asian supermarket before, give them a try. Ramune is a marble-topped bottle that's fun to open and tastes like a great citrus-tasting cider. Calpico Water is sweet non-carbonated milky drink with similarities to other Asian yogurt-like beverages. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Japanese milk-coffee or green tea. Spacious outdoor seating, perfect for a summer day! They have outdoor kiosks for quick to-go orders which I thought was a great idea! Otherwise, you can also order at the front counter and dine-in or online for pickup: https://www.toasttab.com/hurrycurryoftokyo-santamonica/v3/?mode=fulfillment

Yelp
I came during my lunch hour around 1 pm on a Thursday. The street parking is a little tough given there are more shops in the shared plaza. I liked the set up inside and it's outdoor seating area. I ordered the loco moco, to my surprise came with a small bowl of Japanese curry. For the meal I payed around $14. I think the serving portion was just enough for a hearty midday meal, and nothing over baring. I loved the Japanese curry. I would dip my rice beef and egg in there with every bite. So flavorful and savory. I took the leftover curry home to use in my own home cooked meal. For the location, and in comparison to other close by restaurants I think Hurry Curry is pretty well priced for the quality of food and it's sleek design. Friendly staff and good bites!

Yelp
Hurry Curry is my wife's favorite so I had to give it a try and... IT WAS AWESOME! This is the spot to go for Japanese curry without a doubt. Each dish was authentic and had great flavor. - Chicken Karaage: made correctly and deliciously... no batter, not deep fried... this is REAL karaage. You have to try this when you order. - Shrimp Curry: my wife ordered hers with grilled shrimp. This has been her usual for years and it tasted just as she remembered. - Vegetarian Curry: this was mine and it was awesome. I added mushrooms and eggplant, which made it even heartier. Even the side salad w/ pickled radish is good. Top notch all around. We'll be back!

Yelp
LOVE this place!! My favorite spot for Japanese curry, Hurry Curry has super flavorful chicken karaage that stands on its own but is absolutely delicious with their curry sauce! I was super sad when hurry curry of Tokyo closed on sawtelle but was excited to see them in Santa Monica! Unlike some other curry places, they give a lot of meat and their spot on ocean park has a good amount of seating! Even arriving late / close to closing, the staff is still super amazing and attentive :) I order from hurry curry for delivery all the time and would say this is one of my all time favorite restaurants! Will definitely return and reorder :D

Yelp
It's very rare that I'd schlep to Santa Monica for anything, but this place it worth the traffic. The Tokyo Curry is a style I've never had - it's almost a stew of ground beef, significantly sweetened by coins of carrot. I love that you can sub spaghetti for rice - it's like curry marinara...but not marinara? Their classic Chicken Cutlet Curry is also great, and I loved adding eggplant as a topping. Only do that if you love eggplant - they have a nice list of other options if you don't. The Chicken Pasta feels like something I'm not supposed to like. The sake-marinated karaage is spectacular, and the stir-fry of mushrooms, onion, pepper and corn is great, but mix that up with their "secret" white sauce, which is morbidly mayo, and the result just can't be good. But it's amazing, possibly the best thing here. Everything here is the best of something. Be sure to eat up and enjoy!

Yelp
We were super happy to learn hurry curry had reopened a while back, a skip and hop away from Sawtelle. The food is solid, just as I remember. Chicken cutlet or pork cutlet curries are my go to. It's served with rice and salad. And don't forget to order some corn soup on the side, usually a hit with the kids and myself. There is limited parking in the back lot and plenty of patio seating for all the restaurants in the area. Plenty of space for little ones to run about! Excellent location for families.

Yelp
The food is delicious and consistent, service is great and I love coming to this location. It's just a nice and chill place. Loco moco special is legit!

Yelp
came to check this place out at the suggestion of my friend. ordered the karaage curry. please look up what constitutes as karaage because your chicken is NOT karaage. no batter whatsoever. karaage is supposed to be battered as it is japanese fried chicken. the curry itself was decent compared to the likes of other japanese curry spots.

Yelp
Yay, I'm glad Hurry Curry is back! The new location is in a very convenient spot - right off Ocean Park in a cluster of restaurants with parking in the back. There's plentiful outdoor and indoor seating as well. I got the Tokyo curry, which is really very unique and delicious. The bits of carrot and egg mixed with ground beef in the curry remind me a little of a sloppy joe, which FYI I love, but you have to enjoy the "your food is all blended together" experience to get the most out of it. If you prefer having everything neatly separated, the more traditional curry (served in a bowl, with the meat and rice plated) might appeal to you more. We also got the fried fish curry (fish was perfectly fried, flaky, crispy, and delicious) and Katsu curry (also vvvvery yummy.) The curry "spice level" is on the mild side, so if you really like spicy food, I would opt to go for a touch spicier than you'd usually order. The only enh part of the meal I would say was the corn potage soup - it was a bit lumpy and the taste was on the bland side. I might just opt for salad next time. Service is pretty casual (you order at the counter and get a number, they bring your food out to you) but still attentive and friendly. I'm excited to come back and try their pastas next!

Yelp
An authentic Japanese Curry House in Santa Monica! Japanese curry is thicker than the Indian and Thai curries I am used to. DELICOUS! Start with Potato Croquettes (2 for $7). Very tasty mash of potato with garlic and onions, encrusted in panko, lightly fried, served hot, with a tasty dipping sauce. Enough for two people for an appetizer. Spinach and Mushroom Curry ($12.50) comes with rich and a small salad. For $2.50 add the vegetables, for lots of carrots, corn, peas and potatoes in the curry. For $2, sub brown rice. All curries here can be served at your desired spice level - Mild, Medium, Hot, or Extra Hot. Mild was perfect for this Spice Wimp! Order at the indoor counter and food will be delivered to your table. Tables both inside and outside. Staff are friendly, welcoming, and helpful if you are unsure what to order. Free parking onsite.

Yelp
I remember their Sawtelle location from years back but I never made it over to try before that location was closed during peak Covid. This new location in Santa Monica has a modern feel to it but overall I feel that the quality of the food and the service was a bit lacking. We started with the beef croquettes and they were almost inedible; greasy with a rather unpleasant texture and a bit of an oily mess. I've had better croquettes from convenience stores in Japan for sure. Next was the side salad and we surprisingly enjoyed the ginger/soy dressing a lot which was one of the highlights of the meal. We both ordered the chicken katsu curry (medium heat) and while the texture of the curry was nice the first bit of flavor had an overly processed tinge to it and it was a bit palate-killing. The chicken for the most part was fried well but some pieces of meat were definitely on the tougher side. The quality of the service was fine. Service was friendly enough at the counter when we ordered but after that we didn't really have any interaction with the staff other than just dripping off our orders at the table.

Yelp
God, I love curry. Hurry Curry has some of the best Japanese curry foods ever. I ordered the Chicken Cutlet Curry plate, and it was delicious. We both had the same plates and this is a nice spot on the beach. Walk inside and you can smell the culture and food here. Great food and nice view on the beach. I will be coming back.
