Been coming to this restaurant for almost 20 years. They used to be located on Sawtelle but recently re-opened in SM. I was devastated to hear they closed during the pandemic since I had so many fond memories here and was ecstatic to hear they were reopening! The new location has plenty of FREE parking (2 Hours) and is located just north of the SM airport in a plaza. The old valet parking lot was horrible... new location is so much better!
For those unfamiliar with the place, this is not your typical Indian style curry restaurant, but Japanese curry - slightly sweeter, less emphasis on the cumin, packed with savory flavor, and typically served over a fried pork / chicken / meat cutlet aka Katsu. The panko, or Japanese style breading on their cutlets is delicious, and their curry is amazing! They also have a number of other curry variations like a seafood medley, or eggplant for vegetarians. They offer mild, medium, hot or extra hot spice levels and found them to be somewhat muted - I'd suggest going up a level from your norm if you like a little kick.
The Chicken Pasta is a fantastic alternative and one of my fav dishes that isn't curry-based. Served with soy glazed chicken, atop a bed of noodles and a medley of vegetables, this dish is sure to capture your tastebuds. The house cream sauce is mouthwateringly rich and tasty. Both this dish and any of the curry dishes come with a side of soy-vinaigrette salad, and flavorful sweet & tangy fukujinzuke, which is red pickled daikon (radish).
If you prefer pasta with seafood, the Mentaiko & Ika is another fav. I love cod roe and calamari, and they pair the two perfectly here. Otherwise, the Seafood Spaghetti is a medley of calamari, shrimp, scallop, and fish in a delicious soy wine sauce, however, you can opt for a more traditional spaghetti in tomato sauce if you prefer.
The panko crust on the potato croquette is perfectly crisp, and despite your insatiable desire to bite into it, give it a little time to rest as it's typically very hot! I like to cut it into pieces and let it cool down a bit. They also serve a ground beef variation which is great if you want a bit more sustenance (if I'm in a rush, sometimes I get this version with their Karaage for a quick snack).
The Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) appetizer is the same chicken in the Chicken Pasta dish. If you don't want to commit to a full pasta plate, this is a great way to sample their tender sake-marinated chicken.
I love their fried calamari as well. The batter is light and compliments the flavorful calamari well. They cook it just right and it's crisp on the outside, nice and moist on the inside.
If you're looking for some soup, you can't go wrong with a side of miso, but their lobster bisque is heavenly. I highly recommend trying it!
Lastly, if you've never tried one of the Japanese beverages they offer at a Mitsuya or other Asian supermarket before, give them a try. Ramune is a marble-topped bottle that's fun to open and tastes like a great citrus-tasting cider. Calpico Water is sweet non-carbonated milky drink with similarities to other Asian yogurt-like beverages. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Japanese milk-coffee or green tea.
Spacious outdoor seating, perfect for a summer day! They have outdoor kiosks for quick to-go orders which I thought was a great idea! Otherwise, you can also order at the front counter and dine-in or online for pickup:
