The 22 Essential Restaurants in Ensenada, Mexico

"Beer and peanuts aren’t exactly a gastronomic experience worth seeking out. Still, you’ll never forget you left your footprint in sawdust and peanut shells on these hallowed saloon floors. Not much has changed since German immigrant John Hussong took over this bar in 1892. Hussong’s is one of the bars claiming to have invented the margarita, though you’d never know it after ordering one. The margaritas are okay, the beer is cold, and the bandera — a trio of lime juice, sangrita, and tequila — helps the mass-produced tequila go down. But once the bassist in the ranchera band snaps his noisy, nylon strings to kick off Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” or the Eagles’ “Hotel California,” you can’t help but smile while sipping the night away." - Bill Esparza

Hussong's Cantina – Ensenada, Mexico - Gastro Obscura

"The curious history of Hussong’s proves that when opportunity knocks, you should answer — even if it comes in the form of a violent dirtbag you barely know asking you to do him a solid. Johann Hussong immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1888, and moved to Ensenada in 1889 after the discovery of gold in the area prompted a short-lived and perhaps over-hasty gold rush. Hussong restyled himself as “John” and worked as a hunter and trader for a couple of years, until a series of difficult-to-parse events led to the establishment of his landmark Baja cantina. John and his companion Newt went a-trading down the coast at El Arco, where Newt broke his leg in a carriage mishap. The two returned to Ensenada so that Newt could recuperate at Meiggs’ Bar, which at the time was the only bar in town. After being there only two days, the owner (Meiggs) attacked his wife with an axe, promptly went to jail, and Mrs. Meiggs took the opportunity to disappear to California. After Meiggs got out of jail, he went north to find his wife, asking John to look after the joint while he was gone. Neither Meiggs ever turned up again, thus Hussong found himself the premier publican in Ensenada. After running Meiggs’ Bar for a year, in 1892 Hussong wisely decided to break new ground and purchased a stage coach station across the street (the southern terminal of an Ensenada-LA line) which he turned into Hussong’s Cantina. The establishment remains in the same place and largely unchanged to this day, including their continued possession of municipal liquor licence #002. Meiggs’ Bar has since gone out of business, making Hussong’s the oldest bar in Ensenada. As remarkable as that history may be, Hussong’s primary claim to fame is as the birthplace of the margarita. The cocktail was purportedly invented in October 1941 by Hussong’s bartender Don Carlos Orozco, who had been experimenting with various concoctions and tested one out on a German ambassador’s daughter who visited the cantina, one Margarita Henkel. She (presumably) enjoyed the experimental libation, and it was thus named after her. While it is no doubt difficult to pinpoint with absolute certainty the first place where tequila, lime juice, and a fragrant liqueur were mixed together into a delicious good-time drink, Hussong’s remains the commonly accepted home of the margarita. Hussong’s lives on to this day in the old stage coach station, its sawdust-covered floor and uncomplicated place-to-drink-booze atmosphere giving patrons a taste of Old Mexico. Famous visitors include James Garner and Ronald Reagan. Every Sunday, the cantina offers two-for-one deals on “prepared clamatos.” None" - JesseMan, RHyzer, kjmoore12, hrnick, jondi letnap

As a margarita enthusiast, I couldn’t pass up the chance to check out this spot! When we arrived, it was relatively quiet, but it didn’t stay that way for long. The place quickly filled up with lively visitors, and once the mariachi band started performing, it was a party! We kicked things off with margaritas, and though the glasses seemed small, they packed a serious punch! Strong but incredibly tasty, they were some of the best I’ve had. Despite the growing crowd, our server made sure we were never without drinks, keeping us well-supplied with margaritas, beer, and even a few rounds of shots. The prices were super reasonable, and the overall vibe was fantastic. Definitely a must-visit if you’re looking for great drinks and a fun time!

Google
A nice laid back spot we visit while in Ensenada. Birthplace of the Margarita.

Google
A fun, authentic Mexican dive bar atmosphere • Live music on busy nights • Friendly staff • Reasonable prices • Lots of history and charm

Great atmosphere! It was fun and very lively for a Saturday night. The Margarita was better at the Andaluz bar in The Hotel Riveria Pacifico.

Google
I had to visit the place where the first margarita was invented. This place takes credit for being the creator of one of the most popular drinks around. They're small but mighty. Great atmosphere. Service was amazing. Music was on fire. Great place to visit.

Google
We got here pretty early and maybe that was the problem. But the staff just sort of stared at us and the place just felt kind of run down. The prices charged matched the menu and the USD vs Peso charge was reasonable. The margaritas were good but overall the vibe was just a bit to strange for me to think to ever go back.

Google
Security: they will check your bags. You will be safe here. The margarita was great. Wanted to try the place that invented it. This compared to the other place. This place is better. Server was nice. The drink was in an actual glass!

Google
Don't even bother going to papas and beer. This is the bar you want to go too if you want any kind of real character. Been around since 1892 with photos all over the walls and wood shavings on the ground. Margarita was fantastic

Yelp
We stopped here while in Ensenada and although it was very brief just for a few drinks it was still a nice time. From the outside it looks pretty small but once inside you see that this place can hold a lot of people. We opted to sit at the bar since we only wanted a few margaritas. The bartender saw us and greeted us right away. He asked what we wanted and got to making our blended margaritas. They were really good and very affordable that we had to get another round. Perfectly blended where the alcohol was not overpowering and it just made you want more. All that was missing was a nice beach and it would be perfect. All in all we didn't do much besides get some drinks and we're in and out in less then 20 minutes but we honestly had no complaints. If you are in town come down and get some of their original margaritas.

Yelp
Terrible terrible terrible. Unfriendly. Awful, and small margaritas. Way overpriced. Do yourself a favor and go visit in MegaBurros instead.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried out the "original" margarita. Very different then the margaritas made outside of Mexico. Good flavor. Chill old school bar. Will come back when i'm Ensenada.
google avatar

Yelp
Great bar. Ice cold beer, good margaritas-sold old fashioned bar service. Fun local spot. Great prices and they take credit cards.

Yelp
Whenever I travel south of the border, I always make it a point to stop by Hussong's. This iconic cantina is visited by tourists from around the country and has been at its present location for over 50+years. The peanut shelled laced floor, old photographs and memorabilia dating back several years, coupled with an array of beers and mixed drinks makes this one of Ensenada Mexico's hottest spots. Some employees have worked here for years and are happy to share their personnel experiences and the rich history of the cantina. I ordered a few beers which, I received within a few minutes while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. The staff is very welcoming, friendly and eager to serve you. Visiting the cantina during the week, (As I did), you will definitely see a lot less people. The weekends tends to be very busy, noisy and extremely crowded making it difficult to hold a conversation. So, I appreciated the quietness on this visit. On occasions you might have the pleasure of listening to music from a group of musicians who walk around taking song requests and playing them for all to hear. I throughly enjoyed myself and would highly recommend giving this spot a try should you find yourself in Ensenada Mexico.

Yelp
Had to stop in here since it is "where the Margarita was invented". My buddy ordered a blended margarita for like $6.00. It came in a tiny plastic glass, and my buddy said it tasted like ass. He was not impressed. It wasn't really "blended" either, it was more like flecks of ice. Anyways........I don't drink anymore, and they didn't offer a "virgin margarita", so I had a can of Coke to drink. Other people were coming in for a drink, and then heading out soon after...not too many people hanging around for the long haul. They did have 3 or 4 TVs with the Sunday Football games on, which was nice. Would I come back? Naw. Was it ok? Sure.

Jessica N.

Yelp
Delicious margaritas, but the whole bar smelled like gasoline and we seemed to be the only ones who noticed. Made us pretty dizzy so we only enjoyed the one margarita then left. Service was great, only complaint really is the smell of gasoline.

Yelp
Awesome to be able to go to an extremely old bar. Had a drink and looked around it was awesome! There was pigeons walking around inside

Yelp
Everything - world famous. Birthplace of margaritas enjoyed being here among the locals of Ensenada

Yelp
My favorite bar so far in Ensenada. Live music, cheap beers, good vibes, not much english. My buddy got his Birkenstock sandals shined for 100 pesos.

Yelp
Apparently there are two bars in Ensenada fighting for ownership of developing margaritas. This is one of two bars. This bar is located in the heart of the downtown tourist area of Ensenada. Turn off the Main Street on the far end to find this location. Goggle will directed you to this location as well! Entering this bar is like stepping back in time. Wood floors and bar. Floor riddled with peanut shells. Peanuts sold for consumption. You can also purchase chips. An outside area exist too. You can hire a band to play music. You pay what you want but don't be cheap! The choice drink is of course margaritas. The drink does not come in a typical Mexican margarita glass but a tall short glass. Margaritas are nice and tart, not overly sweet. Each margarita is about $5.60 if converting from pesos to dollars. A full bar exist, so they will make you whatever you want. When visiting there was a diesel odor. Not sure if coming from floors. Also the bathrooms are not the best, a bit wet on the floor. Not sure why. Grab some toliet paper on the way in. Worth a visit. Don't forget your ID if you look young or under age! Security at the door!

Yelp
We were looking for something fast on our way to wine country. Stopped at Hussongs. The food was pretty good. Wish they had beans like they said on their menu. Also, the Carne con Papás has nacho cheese instead of melted shredded cheese. Ended up soupy. Overall good. We'd go back.

Yelp
The services and security is 10/10. The waiters and bartenders and security guard are working hard. I love history and this place offers it. I've been here several times I'm finally writing a review. The first couple times i came here for a bar hopping tour and recently came back by on a weeks cruise. Lucky to have had a conversation with Sergio the bartender who made sure our drinks were on point. He even gave us a sticker of the bars logo. So grateful. I ordered a Margarita and my boyfriend got pina colada. Both drinks were deliciously made and it got to the point. Thanks Sergio. For food there are snacks I wasn't sure if it had food I didn't go here to eat but I did notice ppl bring food from outside. The ambiance is of history decor, TVs available for sports and music. Will always come back and stop by for a drink or two. It's funny because it's only a few steps away from Senior frogs. But only the locals come here.
google avatar

Terri A.

Yelp
I liked the authentic dive bar vibe--mariachi music, quick bar service and inebriated tourists. Was it the best margarita I have ever had? No. But I can say I was here and tried one of the two places that claim the fame of starting the margarita
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
This joint has been around a looong time, but I think that has become the draw. Located in a main tourist thoroughfare, you feel obligated to give it a look see. A bright spot was their private labeled beer, which was ok. Dirty and overpriced drinks, but the tourists keep coming! Ambiance is dirt cantina, service was average, and prices were above it!
google avatar

Imelda R.

Yelp
For excellent , refreshing & cheap margaritas, this is the place for it! Only food available are peanuts & chips. You'll see and hear local guitar performers that come through the cantina and some live birds who preys on the peanut shells ( and accidental droppings of nuts ). You can pay $4 or pesos ( cheaper ). Love the bar seating & airy indoors but limited seating indoors. Wait isn't long. Service is friendly. Just call "Jose or Maria" to take your drink order.
google avatar

Margaret J.

Yelp
Kind of funky not what we expected. Margarita was just mediocre. Birds are flying around inside the restaurant. It was kind of strange. We went next-door to Papas and beer and it was so much better.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Glad I came out to try this place. Best margarita I've ever had. This place is always packed and filled with people who want to have a good time. Music is great too. :)
google avatar

Mara N.

Yelp
Love this place! A bit loud but what do you expect! Beer is cold, Mariachi's can SING and the vibe is good!
google avatar

Maricel J.

Yelp
Tiny bar with lots of history. Came in, they had a mariachi band performing in the middle of the bar. Everyone was nice.
google avatar

Yelp
This bar is a gem of Ensenada. My husband and I stopped in because it is the oldest bar in Ensenada and wow upon arriving you feel true authenticity. It's a busy and dives bar, very old school beach bar vibes feel. The staff is very nice and quick. We had a single margarita and holy cow it was one of the strongest you'll ever have in your life! It's fresh. You can taste the fresh lime juice and the tequila in it tastes great to.
google avatar

Monique S.

Yelp
Such a fun place! Old style all the way. Margaritas are delicious and fresh , peanuts to unshelled and munch on. Wood floors and and old saloon bar. Doesn't look like much on the outside but a pleasant surprise when you enter. Sports more of a local fell than a tourist destination attraction!
google avatar

Bianca K.

Yelp
Fun and party ambiance! The drinks were pretty good and the service was top notch! My husband and I went recently and loved that the place was packed and fun! Must try in Ensenada!
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
An amazing experience to pop in after dinner for an old timey Mexican cantina and see everyone in the bar--multiple generations of locals--singing folk songs along with the mariachi band.
google avatar

Aaronela O.

Yelp
This is a historic joint in Ensenada. Arguably the birthplace of the margarita. It's definitely old school with pigeons running around like little stray dogs looking for scraps. This place is more about the ambience and being in a long-standing Ensenada establishment. Their house lager beer is pretty good, but I will have to be completely honest, their margaritas are super crappy! This is definitely one of those places to be to say that you've been.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Since 1872! Old school dive bar with great margaritas, ice cold beer, and mariachi. Don't miss out on this legendary drinking spot when you are in Ensenada!
google avatar

Erica T.

Yelp
One of the oldest bars in Ensenada. The place is a classic, great micheladas, their own beer brand is good too. It can get a bit crowed (that's when we left). The bartenders are grumpy lol

Yvette V.

Yelp
Super great feel to old western bar style, packed with people love the music, nonstop, friendly atmosphere gets the party going when you're looking to dance have some beers. Listen to music.
google avatar

Vidya P.

Yelp
Great drinks, welcoming atmosphere, and really nice music (though a bit loud for my taste!). Would recommend!
google avatar

Victoria G.

Yelp
We came here on our port of call in Ensenada. We came right at opening time and the margaritas were STRONG and cheap! We all loved our experience. Everyone was very nice
google avatar

Edward L.

Yelp
Great old school cantina ( no wonder is the oldest in Ensenada) great ambiance and amazing bartenders, be aware no food only frito lays and bags of peanuts. Music by a norteño band playing Santana, Eagles,Creedence etc and of course mexican music. I recommend this place. Salud
google avatar

Yelp
THE ORIGINAL 1892!!! Yeaap A little hole in the wall will over 100 years of caracter great vive!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Two stars - could have been better. Couldn't tell you how good it was or not because they wouldn't allow us to bring in our 16 and 17 year old. It's not like they were going to get hammered on tequila. We wanted to try a margarita there and the federales weren't having it. Their loss. We went next door to Papas & Beer who had no problem with our girls.
google avatar

Deanna M.

Yelp
We came strictly for the margaritas. They served them in a small glass so my friends and I were thinking "what is this". Once we took our first sip it was evident that the small margaritas pack a punch. They were strong and delicious. We loved the old town vibe and will definitely return when we come back to Ensenada.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This was a fun stop while exploring the town. We just stopped in for a drink as it was recommended by family friend. Staff was great, ordered a beer, enjoyed and was on my way. Check it out.

Tori G.

Yelp
Seriously folks this is a good room. Lots and of characters to people watch and the best and least in expensive margaritas in Ensenada. Great music. This is a must stop and enjoy place while visiting. Or like us we live here and stop in every month for the peanuts and margaritas! The taco place next door is Devine

Yelp
I stopped here while on a cruise since Ensenada was one of our port of calls. I first learned about it because it is where our original excursion was going to drop us off. That was cancelled but we still ended up in this part of town so I thought it was worth checking out. As soon as you enter there is an armed guard who does a quick security check. You then enter the cantina which appeared to be one central room with tables and a bar. On this day there was a band playing and a large group that appeared to be celebrating a wedding. Or at least having drinks before the reception. We found two seats at the bar and were greeted promptly by the bartender. As others have mentioned the service might seem unfriendly for being in a tourist zone. However with more locals than tourists it comes off as more of a regular dive bar. Most dive bars I have been to the staff is friendly and chats with the regulars. As a one time visitor I was happy to get prompt service and did not expect to be treated like a regular. The margaritas were $4.50. Be aware that the menu lists prices in pesos, but the bartender gave us the price in US dollars. The margaritas were small but strong. Definitely one was enough. The taste was great! Good balance of sweet and sour unlike the huge margaritas served at most chain restaurants in the US. I felt we definitely got our money's worth. Some final tips - they take credit as well as US dollars. We were there in the early afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. A gentleman from Ensenada as super nice and scooted over one spot so my partner and I could sit next to one another. Given that there were more locals I felt that I got a more genuine experience than going to a place full of tourists. Is it the best bar I have ever been to? No. Is it worth checking out? Yes. It is cool knowing I visited one of the oldest cantinas in Mexico. I definitely recommend visiting for at least one drink.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
They claim to have invented the Margarita here. All I know for sure is that it is so good! Loved the laid back atmosphere, so much better than their loud neighbor bars.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
We went for NYE and it was a blast! Great margaritas and service. Very fun vibe, the place was packed with locals and tourists, great mariachi going
google avatar

Yelp
The first stop of any Ensenada trip is Hussong's, especially on Saturdays. In fact, we only hang out here on Saturday because it's 2-for-1 margarita day. It's cheap enough to drink here but even cheaper on the weekend. Imagine that! This place is old school, the original, with no-nonsense bartenders and live entertainment most days. I've been here a dozen times and always have my drinks on the rocks and have never had a problem (the water and ice are filtered). Watch out because these drinks are strong. They're on the small side but they pack a punch. Try to sit at the bar for the best experience, and sit near Daniel. He's heavy-handed on the pours and I swear has been a fixture behind the bar for at least 30 years. It's located in the main tourist area but walk right past Papas and Beer and the obnoxious whistles and upside-down shot stunts and go to the real deal instead. Bonus points for clean restrooms! Bring a sticker to leave on the bar or on the bathroom mirror.

Pedro C.

Yelp
Had a blast with friends drinking cold beers at Hussong's Cantina. We also paid for multiple songs from the musicians walking around selling their service to sing Spanish songs for a fee. They are a little pricey but all in the group pitched in to pay for them. The only negative part was the flower salesman that was being too aggressive on trying to sell his flowers and became rude after our group told him no multiple times. He resorted to making rude offending comments about our group. It would be nice if the establishment would be more proactive and making sure the people selling things are respectful to the clients. Overall the place was very nice, and chill for the older crowd. Unlike the neighboring bar which is meant for the younger louder crowd.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
On our first stop on our Tuk Tuk tour was one of the oldest cantinas in Ensenada, called Hussong's which was originally built in 1892. This is primarily a local watering hole during the weekends and a tourist area during the weekdays. Our tour guide said that a lot of cruisers from Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruise Lines stop at this place. I had a Sol on draft which was quite tasty. The decor is a traditional bar feel with pictures representing the past of the establishment, as well as televisions for viewing the latest sports. Most of the bartenders speak Spanish only with only a few knowing a little bit of English. So my tip would be to either: a) Learn Spanish b) Have someone with you who knows Spanish to help with the language barrier. My only gripe with this particular venue was the reception to us as tourists was rather cold, however when our tour guide walked in it seemed their attitudes changed. This isn't to say this place isn't worth visiting, it's just a caution that the prices you may be given or the air in which you are greeted, may change if you are there by yourself or with a local. Overall though, a nice stop in the beautiful town of Ensenada, Mexico!
google avatar

Yelp
Oldest Bar in Baja, so it's worth a visit, but maybe just one. It's got history, it's got peanuts, cheap beer and simple drinks. The paintings are great. It's surprisingly well lit, but packed on a Saturday and I feel bad for the staff having to duck and dive around people, most of whom don't even attempt to move, they post up like entitled locals. The bands that sing drinking songs here are super loud and with the drunkards singing along it's more like all your drunk uncles doing the most at your nieces quincineira, just stealing the spotlight. They actually have a decent selection of liquor, mostly brands you won't recognize. I wanted to try both Havana Club's side by side, but it was too loud and too crazy to do that. No shelves they keep them at bar height. The water is bottled and poured in glasses. Ice is at a minimum, they use more ice in the buckets than in any drink I saw being made. The back bar was pretty spacious, way more room than anyone on our side had to move. Not much else to say other than unless it's significant less packed I doubt I'll come back to give a more in depth review.

Yelp
Super rad little bar in Ensenada. I definitely recommend coming here. The atmosphere is chill and I love all the history on the walls. If only those walls could talk...
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
No one goes here anymore because it's always crowded. But, seriously, it's just a bar and you can't get a place to sit down. The 2 uniformed armed guards at the front door "almost" wouldn't let us in as my friends 30 year-old son didn't have any ID to prove he was older than 18. We didn't need the hassle but we were allowed in and walked back out to a place nearby where we walked in, were seated by a nice wait person and had a beer in hand in 2 minutes.
google avatar

Craig G.

Yelp
The closest thing to a locals bar in the tourist area of Ensenada. Friday night meant mariachis and beer. Loud groups for weddings or parties, enough televisions to watch the Dodger playoffs but not enough to dominate all the conversations. Peanuts provided instead of chips and salsa (needed salted peanuts to battle the beer). Why are the Dos Exiis showing a XY and not XX? Ok for the oldest bar in town, but not a favorite go to spot!
google avatar

Sibling S.

Yelp
Took my son for a shot of tequila in this old but historic bar. We had Cazadores. Had a good conversation with the bartender, He spoke English well, but a better conversation was had in Spanish. Nice to see a 131-year old bar still there. Spring break is still alive!!!
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Small place with Lots of history. Claim to fame as discovering the margarita. I did try one, it was good. Offer their own beer, that was good. You can order peanuts and leave the shell on the ground. Just a very casual place. Staff was fine, not chatty at all, just brought drinks. Good price. I might stop by if I am in the area but lot of other bars to see around town!
