Security Does A Great Job At Keeping The Campus Safe, Always Patrolling And Checking New Arrivals. Great Staff And Teachers.

Ericka Williams

Google
I enjoyed the campus. I feel well informed and that majority of the staff were happy to assist me. I think the campus could use a couple of marketers to help promote how great the school is to more students. Campus feels cozy inside the Austin city skyline. Looks like more improvements to class rooms are on the way. Adult Degree Program is informative and flexible, with a few bumps.

Just wanted to thank Mrs. Teresa Lewis and Mrs. Daisy Phillips for embracing a soul such as mine. As a Non-Traditional student,I was apprehensive in my failure ,with regard to furthering my education. What I learned was far more practical than that, derived from a degree A personal, genuine love for each soul passing thier way, continues to light my way in life.Years later after leaving H.T.,I seen Mrs. Lewis in Bartlett Texas, she knew who I was and I could never forget her.I thanked her for caring so much, and again, she said the world needs people like me. I wear that with honor. Thanks Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Phillips. I love all the strong Mothers that believe all kids are thiers

I have been going to this school for 2 years. So far, the only problem I have encountered is the office staff, Strickland, who is in charge of completing paperwork to get your chapter 35/ military financial aid, has a slow process and needs frequent reminders in order to do so. However, the students, campus organizations, and professors are beyond amazing.

I would advise NOONE to attend this "institution". I did one semester here, Spring 19' and it was the worst experience ever. I thought, hey, let me give my people at chance, its a HBCU. PFHHHH, never again. For starters, I had seen on their website that if you worked for certain govt agencies you could get a discount on your tuition with the criminal justice program. I inquired about this on registration day and another day during the semester. The staff acted like they had no idea what I was talking about and even took my info and never got back to me. I was never told about the adult program. Luckily my employer tweeked my hours and I was able to attend class and return back to work with no issues. My professors were the only positive thing. Secondly, my current online school sent a request in April for my transcript to be sent once grades were posted after the semester ended...nothing was sent. I called HT and spoke to whomever is in that dept and she stated they would send it even though they didn't see a request. Then, I asked my current school had they received anything in early June, still nothing. I called AGAIN and left a vm, no return call. I called two days later snd spoke with the, I'm assuming assistant to the transcript lady because by that time I had gone on HTU website and PAID for my transcript and EMAILED my confirmation of payment and the completed request form to the email address listed on the school's website and on the bottom of the request form. Guess what she says? She didn't see a request but she "promises" the transcript was going out that day (fri, June 14) with the other transcripts. I called HT again the following Friday and left a message. I still havent received a phone call, email, nothing. They cost so much money and do the LEAST to meet your needs. I had a 1,000% better experience at Austin Community College and I didnt have to pay for a transcript, no matter how many I needed. I am HIGHLY disappointed in HT and am so glad I don't attended classes there anymore.

When I started in August 2018, I was told that my financial aide will post to my account by Jan 2019 and I will be notified about a possible refund. It is now almost June, and I have yet to hear anything! I keep getting the runaround from the ADP Accounting department as well as another individual "M.M" and they take forever to respond via email, and when they do, they shift the blame on each other, still leaving me without answers. I can't speak to anyone via phone and no one else seems to be able to help. This school is very unprofessional and I hate that I wasted my time going to this school. They have already had one law suit because of this, and they're about to have another one! Do NOT go to this school! This is the worst HBCU!

My hope is to be fair and truthful in my review of HTU. It is a work in progress. Being in the Adult Degree Program, things could run better. I truly feel as an adult learner, that has been in workplace for many years, the flexibility and cohort learning teams are super. The administrators are on the right track. Communication between the university and students must improve. When marketing to other, follow up is most important. Information must be delivered in a timely manner. For the programs to grow and succeed I would like to have more answers and less excuses. To educate and groom students to be leaders, the university must demonstrate a higher level of professionalism.

The staff in EVERY office is extremely unorganized, slow and somewhat unprofessional. There is no reason for a university of this size to have so many issues with financial aid, answering questions, or graduation prep. After getting approved for graduation I was told I needed to come back to take another class because they "missed it somehow". Now i have to scramble to get into a class and make a payment in 3-4 days because of their oversight and lack of responsibility. How my transcript goes from 124 hours to 117 hours is mind blowing and the fact that no one can offer an explanation is ridiculous. I have had so many issues in my 4 years of dealing with this university from financial aid, being over charged for classes, not receiving my employee discount, etc. Stay as far away from this university as you possibly can. Enroll anywhere else but here. Taking classes here will cause you to stress abundantly behind things you wouldn't even need to worry about with a more organized school. Once I am done with this university in May I wont even drive past this place.

Yelp
As the 1st Institution of Higher Learning in Austin, Texas your future employers, and as an HBCU it will not disappoint.

Yelp
If you are looking for an individualized experience, this is the one. I felt seen and have the university to thank for a fruitful career in education.

Yelp
Best University in Texas...HANDS DOWN! It's an exceptional experience with a boutique college feel. It's a beautiful campus with fantastic faculty and staff!

Yelp
Disclaimer: This review is based on the school's involvement with the community-- I don't know much about the school in terms of their academics or course/program offerings. I have been to two community events where this university served as the location: Curly Girls Picnic and the 2018 Keep Austin Beautiful volunteer afterparty. The open fields were well kept and nicely manicured, and the space is large enough to hold a number of tents (ranging in size), vendors and hundreds of guests. Parking is available in an adjacent gravel lot or on the street along side the field. There's also a street/drive up area near the fields, perfect for food truck vendors. Another way in which Huston-Tillotson serves the community is by getting their students involved in Austin area events. I attended a SXSW event this year and the volunteers at the door were students representing Huston-Tillotson. I've also been a longtime judge in a high school youth competition called ACT-SO, and this year our emcee was a student who also represented this university very well. Community service and outreach is something that is very near and dear to my heart, so it's always refreshing when I see companies, organizations and schools serving the communities in which they are apart of. That's school spirit! Fun fact learned from the Keep Austin Beautiful afterparty: Huston-Tillotson is the oldest university in Austin, TX.

Yelp
I received my FA after going back and forth for nine months. My 1098-t does not match my correct taxes filed; resulting in a possible audit which happened to my classmate, I will be escalating that somewhere else. I appreciate the opportunities in life attending HTU has offered me but my student loans retribution I am responsible for after graduation pay HT enough to give me a formal reply

Yelp
The adult degree program is a joke . The recruiters never give you all the information . I did not find out every class requires a group project until after I started . The first class they made me take was an introduction to college class and I am a senior in college . That class cost me 1400 and the professor was constantly talking about history and not the course work . Also encouraging students to use Wikipedia as an academic resource amongst other things . The second class I took the students were all on their phones and their attitudes and behaviors despite most being over 30 were equivalent to middle schoolers . The professor Mr.Mosley did not teach the topic in the class health psychology he just talked about himself and his time in Colorado and he would go on tangents about his secretary he used to have . Mr. Mosley and the first teacher Trina both made fun of people with mental illness and called them crazy . I had to ask them both to be professional this is a college environment and people who are in the psychology field are hearing you dismiss mental health . This program does not teach you anything . So if you are going to be going for a masters degree you will be ill prepared in writing skills and general knowledge . I guess If you just want to spend 30,000 or more on a degree and be forced to work in groups with people that don't have work ethic or communication skills this is the place for you . I would not give this school or program one star but I think yelp makes you give at least one .

Yelp
My daughter applied to this institution and was accepted and offered a full scholarship. She was also offered a full scholarship at another school and declined admission at HTU. She informed them that she would not be attending. She never visited this school nor enrolled in any classes or registered at this school. However last December they mailed a federal loan refund check which is the first time she was made aware that they had her marked as an enrolled student. She sent them notification of this error through multiple phone calls and emails and requested that they correct and update their records and also contacted my loan servicer to let them know of the fraud. 8 months later I am still finding out that they are still reporting her as an enrolled student through the National Student Clearinghouse which is making it impossible for her to transfer from my out of state school. I was assured by the COO that this would be corrected but still this has not been fixed.

Yelp
First off, that first review was probably written by one of our Deans. There are so many things wrong with this school and as a graduating senior. I encourage those whom are thinking about attending Huston-Tillotson University to RECONSIDER. The education and overall experience that you will receive here will probably be equivalent if you were to attend ICDC College. 1. If you are offered an scholarship for sports at this school, chances are that it will be taken away by your Sophomore year. The scholarship was just a ploy to get you here and to help with school retention (which is terrible, btw). Track and Baseball players. You have to commute to somewhere off campus (not walking distance whatsoever) to practice. However, you do workouts and stuff somewhere on campus or somewhere in the parking lot. 2. Financial Aid. We still use paper checks at this school. Most universities give you an card or direct deposit of some sort to receive your tuition reimbursement, not at HT. You will receive a paper check, and you probably won't receive that money until 12 weeks/middle of the school semester. So if you live off campus and are depending on that money to come in after the 12th class day to pay your rent....GOOD LUCK. 3. NO accountability. No communication between staff persons in each building (and sometimes in the same building). If you are having an issue as a transfer student with classes from your previous university and need them waived (or whatever the case may be), you will be given the 'Run-Around'.... it may take days or weeks to speak to the correct person to fix your problem. 4. FERPA violations. Grades have been leaked and sent out to the masses on a couple of cases due to instructor/staff persons failure to pay attention. 5. Lack of resources. 6. Campus Life is very restrictive. The type of events we have on campus generally involve Greeks strolling, board games, having a DJ somewhere in the mix in the Student Union and..... a couple of probates. The students do their best to keep campus life lively however there are many barriers faced when trying to do so. 7. Issues with funding to provide all organizations with adequate resources for event planning. 8. Constant rumors of mis-handing and mis-funding of money. 9. Staff with bad attitudes in the business office. 10. Watch your accounts carefully at the beginning of the semester. Sometimes they like to charge you for the schools health insurance, even after you've already provided proof that 11. Dorms. Hot in the Summer and Cold in the Winter, No Wifi.... that seems to be the complaint around campus. However, I encourage you to speak to those whom have lived in the dorms to see what their experiences were. 12. Try to learn how to advise yourself and catch advisor mistakes, or you will end up graduating far beyond when you are supposed to or end up taking classes that you do not need. 13. Staff and professors need to be trained on protocols, advising and documentation regularly. 14. Pay attention to your student account. May sure no miscellaneous charges on tacked onto your accounts regularly. 15. "Parking Lot" Just a pile of dirt with no cement foundation. The school has made a couple of attempts to force students to buy a parking sticker, but that was short lived, as there is no real parking lot for off campus students. You either park in the street or on the unpaved road that is called the "Student Parking Lot". 16. Alumni generally doesn't donate to the school.....and probably for good reasons. (Im speaking on collectively, not individually - we recently had someone donated $3 million, and I believe thats for a new gym/wellness center on campus) Pros: Lots of grants available to students. Great East Austin Location. Close to downtown. Students look out for each other and are very kind. The new library is probably the nicest thing that we have on campus. Dorms have recently been renovated. There are some great professors that stand out and challenge students. I encourage other students at HT to be honest with themselves and others as to what is going on on this campus, so that those whom are in power (in the Alumni Building/White House) can finally make the changes needed to improve our HBCU. I also encourage my fellow RAMS to write reviews as well.

Yelp
-Book-keeping is dated and unorganized. They will lose your paperwork. You can bet on that. -The cafeteria food is all too salty, no idea why. The teachers all cut corners and so overworked that the frustration comes out. -The school is so focused on creating "programs" that their budget never seems to be in a healthy place. These programs are not academic in any way. It's all bad hip-hop music with terrible food like dollar store cookies and cheap tea. -The community is snobbish too. Expect an attitude and apathetic demeanor from most of the students. They are not there to learn, they're just there for the degree. -Not a school you want to go to if you want to pursue hard sciences. Go somewhere else if you're serious. Stay there for a Business degree, I guess.

Yelp
My son attends the school and it is awful. The school has really went down. The people in the office always losing paper work. The financial aid office is the worst. They are no help at all. I send emails and I call they never answer or email back. I hear that the some of the professor are bad but not too much it's basicly everything else. My son will not be attending next year. Not on my dime.

Yelp
Sad....called admissions requesting assistance with school enrollment verification in order for daughter to provide to organizations ready award her scholarship monies. Was referred to two other points of contact. I left three messages each, over a three day period and never received a phone call back. Finally someone else assisted who works in another department (bless her heart) who works in another department, after constantly calling. HBCU, we have to do better. Don't see my daughter attending next year and haven't even started this year yet!

Yelp
Huston-Tillotson is in fact an HBCU. I have attended two other colleges and I must say I am enjoying my experience at Huston-Tillotson thus far. There are some problems though. Campus IT or the IT infrastructure as a whole is abysmal. The student portal especially needs to be nuked from orbit and rebuilt from scratch.

Yelp
As a student that lives in the dorms and always on campus, I have experienced it all. The cafe is the worst place of all, we eat some type of rice and beans everyday. The same baked fish and concession stand food everyday. The grease never gets change. And no matter how much we complain nothing changes. It's like we don't have a voice here. The hardest thing is campus life, everybody depends on the Greeks and Kal V n Sweet James to give this campus some life. And even when you want to do a event on campus you have to go through hell and back, you just can't put on a event without being in a organization or Greek. And from personal experience it's not the easiest to start up a organization and find a advisor because you can't trust anyone on this campus and nobody likes to get involved. The inside of the dorms have been renovated but we still struggle. And I can vouch that they do trick you and don't tell you the bad. They get you with scholarships which is all good but this is NOT a HBCU. You will NOT learn about your culture and it's not like any other campus where you love your people. This school will have you questioning a lot. Think twice before you pay that deposit for the dorms.

Yelp
HTU has an amazing computer science and business department. I have been attending 5 years now and getting a CIS major with a minor in business. I haven't been to many other departments except for philosophy, writing, and biology. All the teachers in those departments were very great also. The classes are smaller and honestly the teacher have always known my name after the first few weeks. The really do care and they make it easy and comfortable to talk to them. The only downside about HT is the funding and when it comes to classes you need to mark your whole degree plan out from the beginning. Some classes are only held once a year out of the two semesters, and I have seen this hold students back. However, if you can recognize the classes ahead of time you should be fine. They also have an outstanding track team that has been to NAIA Nationals for about 10 years straight now. Coach Howard Ware really cares about his athletes and knows exactly what to do for athletes individually.
