We loved meeting the cute friendly cats and loved the selection of books they have. It’s so much bigger inside and has a basement full of books as well. We’re so happy we visited and will be returning!

Google
Amazing, love the floor to ceiling books, and the moving ladder. Don't forget to say hi to the cat. Also there is so many old books. I was like a kid in a candy store. A huge basement as well.

Google
This place has a HUGE Selection of books! I was able to find some nice books and even a few year books from my old high school, which were nice to look back at. ALSO The cats at this place a very friendly and adorable

Google
Fantastic book store and one of the most charming places in Fort Wayne! It may look small from the outside but do not let that fool you. They offer a vast variety of books and have exceptional customer service. Plus with two precious feline friends to accompany you while you search for your next read, what’s not to love about Hyde Bros?! We are lucky to have this gem in our city.

Google
Do you love the feeling of being surrounded by books? Do you love the smell of old, worn, and used books? Do you love to spend hours in a bookstore and never get bored? This is the place for you! Floor to ceiling bookshelves that require a ladder or stool to access. Plenty of stools to sit on while you peruse. Variety out the wazoo. Multiple rooms and two ways to access basement floor. And they have cats!!! You could spend hours here so be warned.

Google
A venerable institution. Get yourself some good reading here and don't miss the regular presentations by local authors. There are two bookstore cats, a sure sign of a quality purveyor of great literature.

Google
Both awesome and overwhelming. So many books to choose from across the two floors. Not from this area but had this on my list of places to stop.

Monica Shankle

Google
This book store is massive and I loved how they had ladders to get to some of the books. They had a really good collection of books. The one downfall is they do not have a public bathroom so of you come from far away like I did it means you can't stay as long as you might have.

Yelp
Get lost in the stacks, pet the friendly cats, and bring your wallet. You could easily spend an hour or two wandering the 3-level shop, or use one of their laminated maps to make a beeline to your genre preferences.

Yelp
One step into Hyde Brothers and I instantly feel calm and content! Books, books, books -- all categories and wonderfully organized! From current bestsellers to hard-to-find classics and just about everything in between. Plus, there are lots of chairs to settle in to and two adorable store cats! They buy books between 12 and 5 and pay in cash or store credit (twice the cash value). As an added bonus, there is a plant store next door and some other fun shops (ice cream across the street, Ophelia's, etc.) nearby. Park in the few spots out front or in the little lot out back!

Yelp
A great selection of books. Excellent customer service. This shop has two of the cutest cars I've ever seen. Next time I'm in town, I'll be sure to come here.

Yelp
Such a cool bookstore! Tons of inventory and very organized, almost like a maze but there's maps to help you find different genre sections. Good prices. The loveliest cats, if I lived in the area I would be a regular.

Yelp
Hyde Brothers Booksellers is a hidden gem on Wells Street. It's the kind of place that you can easily lose track of an hour as you wonder through the maze of books. Each time I visit I find something I just have to buy. One time I found a bunch of boy scout novels in the kids' section and sent them to my brother-in-law for his birthday. (He was a boy scout and an eagle scout!) I thought it might be fun for him to read to his own kids. Another time, I came in here searching for some classics and while I only found a few on my list, I'll be back to search again. One of the reasons I think people love this shop so much is because of the cats. They run the place. I've seen many people pet the cats and found them rather chill. I am unfortunately allergic to cats, so I try to stay away and make sure to take my allergy medication before I come in here. The cats are pretty cute and add to the cozy vibes of this bookstore.

Yelp
The young people working at the shop were very friendly and very fast to guide me to the part of the bookstore I wanted to see. They had a vast selection of new age books including older books from the 60's which was fun. I left spending about 10-12.00 a book and spent 70.00 easily. I was just in one section with an hour before close. I most likely would have spent more! It's a well organized used book store. Oh and there are 2(?) cute cats there. They were not in your face or anything, just wandering around but when I leaned down one of them were fast to come over for a pat on the head.

Yelp
This place has so many books!! I was very grateful to see such a wide selection and left very satisfied with my finds :) The cats are also very adorable!!

Yelp
Neat place. Books as far as the eye can see. It was a veritable maze of bookshelves from floor to ceiling. Cats running wild thru store. Nice place to go if you have the time or you're looking for something that might be hard to find. Selling new and used.

Yelp
This is a top-notch used bookstore, both in terms of quality and quantity. Not only are there multiple rooms (main, back, and downstairs), but the bookshelves nearly go to the ceilings and stepladders/stools are necessary to explore the top 2-3 shelves for even the tallest customers. I spent most of my time in the back room and found several hard to find books in a pretty short time, and left with a big stack and $100 poorer. Specifically, their history, religion, philosophy, nature, and psychology sections were impressive and well-curated. I didn't look at much fiction, but there was plenty of it. The crafts/hobbies sections seemed to skew more towards male-dominated hobbies. The atmosphere of the place was just great and any book lover owes a trip here if they are within 50 miles and have a few hours to spare, although it would take days to look through a good portion of it. Keep in mind that there are maps of the sections and there is also parking behind the building, which seems to go overlooked. To date, this is one of my favorite bookstores of all-time.

Yelp
Every time I go in I'm always greeted by the amazing staff!! The two kitties always make the experience even better. Stop here for fair priced books!!

Yelp
Excellent local bookstore with an extensive selection. They had several difficult-to-find titles that I'd been looking for. Staff was friendly and helpful. There are at least two cats. My only complaint is that I didn't allow myself more time to spend browsing here!

Bev B.

Yelp
I've probably been in 100 used book stores over the years - this is the best: huge selection, very varied selection (not just old Greshams, etc.), tremendous signage, multiple chairs, multiple cats, and ladders on rails. Truly a paragon among book stores.

Yelp
This was an awesome bookstore, knowledgeable staff and a great selection. You could spend hours here.

Yelp
Omg I'm in love! First time here and could have spent hours grazing through the isles in search of tasty treats for me to purchase. Parking is a little scarce but with patience you could snag one close by. It's on a busy street so be careful if you have to cross Wells street. It's an old building with old and new books and the isles are small and it can be busy making it hard to maneuver around other people also in search of that one book they have to add to their library. They don't inventory their books but staff is very knowledgeable about what they have, where it would be and if they've ever come across it. They also have it half haphazardly marked with marker and cardboard on the subject or author or alphabetical order of their books. They buy books too! The line can be long but maybe worthy of the wait since they take their time and decide what they are worth. And they seem very fair and generous. They also have a deep discount section. Books tend to be $.50-$1!!! WOW that is awesome and they actually have some great books in that section. Go there with plenty of time to look and purchase. Ask questions and play with the cats! Sit down and relax with a book too. There are endless amount of hours to be spent here and get to know this great little Fort Wayne business! I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Fantastic used bookstore and a must see place if you come to Fort Wayne. There are two cats who live among the stacks and stacks of books and a great sci fi section. If you haven't yet, be sure to come by for their biannual midnight sales!

Madeline S.

Yelp
Extensive collection and loved the atmosphere was super comfy and cute cats! Not too many people walking around so you could ask for help, but a great experience nonetheless!

Yelp
This is handsdown one of the most iconic places in all of Fort Wayne. If you say the name of this book store most people will know what you are talking about. One thing that I really like is that there are books from top to bottom and side to side and the entire store even in the basement. You can basically get lost and be perfectly fine with it. The people that work there are awesome. I may have a biased because they are a family friend but the owner is very nice and personable and if you ask him for help he will put you in the right direction.

Yelp
This is a fantastic little gem of a bookstore nestled in on Wells Street. You can spend hours upon hours in this place, not just looking through their amazing collection of books, but also lounging around and petting the random kitty cats that pop up here and there. The last time we visited here, I was excited to get some older cook books from former Manhattan cafes & restaurants that have since closed down or changed ownership. However, my fiance found a FIRST EDITION copy of All Quiet on the Western Front in German! I think Hyde sold it for $15, but when we got home, we found that people were selling it on eBay for over $300. Needless to say, it's become one of our most treasured finds, especially considering its historical significance.

Yelp
This review will be straight to the point and simple- but the best don't necessarily require a lot of words. Hyde Brother's Booksellers is the single best carrier of books that I have ever been to in almost 30 years of being alive. My boyfriend and I have hundreds of books on the shelves at home, and our best/favorite pieces are always attributable to this wonderful place. The layout, cats and Sam's awesome attitude add some extra "cool" points as well. Make this a regular stop or a destination shopping experience if you're from out of town- trust me, there will be zero regrets.

Yelp
Fort Wayne is a city whose utter lack of any other perceptible distinctions is possibly in part responsible for its ability to preserve one of those great packed-full-to-the-ceiling, it-goes-on-forever-into-yet-more-rooms used bookstores that used to be common everywhere. I went in thinking, "I probably won't buy anything," but came out an hour later with several bargains of the "I always wanted this" variety, from theology to musicology. It's called Hyde Brothers. If you find yourself in that part of the world, and wonder what you're doing there, which you will, this is where you want to go.

Lily S.

Yelp
Great place with a lot of books! It's been around for a very long time. They have two cats (maybe three) in the store that are super chill. My 4 year old read "cat in the hat" to one of the cats who sat there the entire time very patiently. It desperately needs an update tho

Yelp
If you're a bookaholic, you owe it to yourself to check this place out. With shelves so tall you need ladders to reach the top, you'll be searching the rows for hours to find "just one more." Within two minutes, I found three books from the 1800's in great condition. All of them were priced from $3.00 - $8.50!

Yelp
This is an interesting place. We needed more time here because there were books and books and books. They weren't organized terribly well so it's good to have a lot of time to browse for buried treasure. I did find a little unknown treasure that I bought for like $2. There were also laid back cats lounging around the store if you like cats.

Jeff J.

Yelp
Great used book store! Not only is the selection enormous, the store itself cool (including the cat that wanders the place) but the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. This is one of the best used bookstores in the country!
google avatar

Juli L.

Yelp
Has an amazing atmosphere! Gives Fort Wayne some character that it needs. Has great deals and a huge selection.

Jennifer R.

Yelp
This is a book lover's paradise. They are more selective in what they buy, so you aren't stuck wading through piles of the same book nobody wanted to read. Not too mention, the floor to ceiling bookcases, rolling ladders, and friendly kitties.

Yelp
One of the very best bookstores in the country and certainly the best in Indiana. http://www.squidoo.com/the-best-used-bookstores-in-indiana

Kyle G.

Yelp
This is the bookstore you only see in movies, where the books are stacked and shelved to the ceilings in all directions, they only sell the best books too, every subject and type of book you would ever want to read resides somewhere in this chapel of knowledge, Its just amazing and if you live and fort wayne and have never been to Hyde Brothers on Wells, then you should simply be ashamed, Get down here and watch how far your money can go . . . Students get 10 percent off.
